IN THE PINK Michelle Eves, Amanda Gifford of the Canadian Cancer Society’s Perth unit, and Cobra Pools and Spas owner Judy Brady prepare to draw for the pink hot tub after selling tickets over the past few months. Proceeds of $1,000 will go to the cancer society. Gifford plucked duck number 85 from the pond at the bottom of the tub, belonging to Barb McKnight, a Perth girl who now lives in Burlington. ‘Hola Honduras’ this weekend By DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com

EMC News – This weekend, Honduras is either 6,000 plus kilometers southwest of Perth, or right downtown at the Crystal Palace. Starting at 4:30 p.m., the

emconline.ca

Canada World Youth (CWY) group will be holding a Honduran night featuring a silent auction, music, and traditional dances. The CWY group will also be serving authentic Honduran food. There is no entrance fee but

there is a base price for the food, though you are welcome to donate more than the suggested amount, since all money goes towards the group’s latrine project, which seeks to provide proper toilet sanitation for a Honduran village.

EMC News - Transition Perth is excited to present its second annual Gift Bazaar, Services Swap and Potluck on Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Perth Farmers’ Market inside the Crystal Palace. Starting at 9 a.m. until noon, the public is invited to come out and share ‘free stuff’, including items such as gently-used toys, books, clothes, kitchen ware, small furniture, equipment, etc., and to exchange “free services” at the Services Swap table intended for bartered skill-sharing within the Perth community. Organization member Jennifer Martine-Druker says, “The event offers an opportunity to strengthen local resilience, to utilize reused and repurposed materials and to reduce energy consumption through availability at no cost.” The Gift Bazaar is a social event, welcoming all folks from the Perth community to come out and mingle, share belongings, skills and interesting company. Transition Perth member Bonita Ford shares her enthusiasm around last year’s event. “I really enjoyed the day and the playful atmosphere. There was a lot of curiosity and inspiration at the whole idea, and it brought people of all ages out from different parts of the community.” Ford also says the “Service Swapping” at last year’s event was very popular, providing an avenue for people to barter gifts such as design services, babysitting, writing and editing, catering/food services, cleaning and more. She would like to see the services swap grow into something that can take place year round, where community members are accessible to each other for skill-swapping, especially during times of economic hardship. A forum on the Transition Perth website will

allow people to post the services they are looking for and what they can offer in return. During the bazaar, service swaps in the form of minimassages, songs, jokes, facepainting, and hugs are also encouraged, and a Community Potluck Lunch will be held after the event at 12 noon. People are asked to bring a food dish to share, plus their own plate, cutlery and mug. The organizers of the Gift Bazaar also ask that participants please take back/pick up all items that do not get taken home from the event. Please return at 12 noon for the pickup, or stay through until the end of the event and join us for the Potluck Lunch. The organization Transition Perth is a kind-hearted group of volunteers, aimed at creating community resilience amidst the stresses and pressures of economic and environmental change. Martine-Druker explains how the Gift Bazaar builds community strength. Ford sees gifting and bartering as a potent opportunity for community experiencing economic challenge, explaining, “There are so many people with skills and resources to share in Perth. Money is not such an abundant resource here as it might be in a big city; many people are selfemployed. The Gift Bazaar and Services Swap will be held on Saturday, September 15th from 9am until 12 noon, followed by a Community Potluck Lunch. The event is free and open to all, although donations to Transition Perth are appreciated and welcome, as the organization is totally volunteer run and has no source of revenue.
