EMC News - Madoc There was a lot of rustling around in the bullrushes south of the village last week as a group of students arrived to help build a bridge. It is the type of project, says Deputy-reeve Tom Simpson, that offers lasting benefits for all involved. Improvements to the boat launch and surrounding area are continuing with a crew of high school students onsite in recent weeks to put the finishing touches on the Educational Boardwalk, constructed across a nearby marshland. And it was a valuable hands-on learning experience for the crew of 20 Grade 12 Centre Hastings Secondary School (CHSS) students enrolled in Brad Olsen’s Construction Tech class, Simpson says. “They’re using what they learn in class out here,” explains Olsen of the school’s construction program as his students completed the installation of posts and railings along the already constructed boardwalk. “We started last Thursday so this is our second day [onsite] but they did a lot of the prep work at school,” he says. CHSS Principal Shelley Mackenzie-Coates, who attended the construction site during the work last week, has high praise for Olsen’s program saying it offers

the practical experience as well as the theory but also provides a community connection. “It allows them to make bona fide contributions that have authenticity in the community,” she says. And, Simpson adds, it makes sense that and Educational Boardwalk would have an educa-

tional component in its creation. “There’s a bear den on one side and a beavers’ house on the other,” he says on the newly constructed walkway. “And there have been turtles and muskrats and ducks identified in here. “It’s great to get the high school included,” he adds,

noting several individuals and other groups have been a large part of the boat launch improvements projected for completion as early as 2014. “They have the expertise and they have a good leader,” he says of the students and Olsen, adding many have received accreditation as equip-

ment operators of various construction machines from chainsaws to scissor lifts. “As a municipality we wouldn’t be able to afford things like this,” he says of the contributions made by past and present CHSS students to community projects.

First Annual Tourism and Awards Celebration By Richard Barkosky

Grannies planning a rally.

Students from Brad Olsen’s construction technology program at CHSS, have stepped out of the classroom and into the swamp recently to help build the Educational Boardwalk as part of improvements to the boat launch area south of the village.

EMC News - Tweed - The first annual Tourism and Awards Celebration was held at Trudeau Park, with over 80 guests in attendance. MP Daryl Kramp was the first speaker of the evening, and pointed out the difficulty of succeeding in the tourism industry. “Tourism is the simplest thing to do,” he said, “but

the hardest to succeed in.” As he had been involved in the tourism business, and had taught the subject at St. Lawrence College, he spoke easily on the topic. Kramp pointed out that success depended on the workers themselves, and how well they dealt with the clientele, public relations being of paramount importance. Also, the size of the industry is not commonly

realized, and he noted that the number of tourism workers in Canada exceeded the total number in mining and logging combined. Reeve Jo-Anne Albert recalled how, as warden, she was part of the decision to implement the master plan for tourism for Hastings County. The various awards were then presented by Comfort Country’s Gloria Fletcher

and tourism development co-ordinator Kasey Pollard, and are as follows: Tourism Business of the Year (tie) - Old Hastings Mercantile and Gallery and Tweed News; Tourism Organization of the Year - Marmora Snofest; Festival of the Year - Grail Springs Lady Fair Summer Conference and Festival for Women; Event of the Year - Marmora Snofest ; MVP

(Individual) of the Year (tie) - Marc Forget (The Marmora Miner’s Loop) and Janice Chrysler (Hastings County Wellness); Rookie of the Year - Tammy Latchford (Bella Ever After Boutique). A separate award called Service Excellent Celebration was given to Peter and Janice McConnell, who operate The Food Company on Victoria Street North in Please see “Tourism” on page 3
