While the outstanding money irked some councillors, many were also annoyed with the lack of information that came their way when the promoter’s payment difficulties were first noticed a year ago.

Councillors grilled staff for an hour over ‘who knew what, and when’ at their December 4 meeting.

So began the story, A Visit from St. Nicholas, published anonymously in 1823 and later attributed to Clement C. Moore. The reading of the story has become a Christmas tradition.

Over time, some of the mysteries surrounding Santa Claus and his life have been unraveled. In the 1823 story, we learned some of the reindeer names.

This year, the method for reindeer flight was revealed by no less than Santa Claus himself.

In an interview with the jolliest of givers, I learned much about Santa. For example, A Visit from St. Nicholas is his favourite book. Still, some mysteries remain.

When asked how old he was, never a tactful question, he replied, “I am as old as time.”

Santa loves all children. He still remembers eight-year-old Virginia O’Hanlon, who lived at 115 West Ninety-Fifth Street in New York City. In 1897, Virginia wrote a letter to the New York Sun newspaper asking if there is a Santa Claus. Knowing that the Pulitzer Prize-winning paper did superb research and wrote the truth, Virginia felt confident she’d find an answer.

She did. The paper responded with the famous editorial, “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus….”

Virginia grew up to become a writer, teacher and school principal. When Virginia O’Hanlon was 81 years old, Santa visited her in the nursing home where she lived after retiring. She said she still believed in Santa Claus. For that comment, Santa gave her a kiss on the cheek.

“Her curiosity made people believe in the magic of Santa,” Santa Claus told me. The ageless and kind man said he

City learned “hard lessons” in loaning money to host curling event

EMC News – City officials are not giving up hope they can collect an outstanding loan from a Toronto-based curling promoter.

“We continue to see this as a collection matter,” said chief administrator Gerard Hunt.

The non-payment issue dates back to over a year ago when city council agreed to loan iSport Media and Management Limited $150,000 to help secure the

BDO Canadian Open at the K-Rock Centre.

Council was promised all of the money would be returned if enough tickets were sold for the December 2011 curling competition, which turned into a big success. Over 17,000 people attended the event, more than enough for the city to recoup its loan.

But, only recently, councillors learned that not all of the tax-supported loan was paid back due to apparent financial problems with the curling promoter. City officials say they

have secured $108,000 so far, leaving an outstanding amount of $42,000 based on a complex agreement involving the city, curling promoter, KEDCO and the arena’s private manager. Of the amount collected so far, $48,000 came from ticket sales, plus arena manager SMG will reimburse the city for about $60,000 rather than keep it to cover operating expenses to host the curling event, according to a staff report.

“We believed we were dealing with a reputable partner,” Hunt added.

Kingston’s inmate graffiti- City learned “hard lessons” eraser program expanded to 4 days a week Curling From page 1

EMC News - Local inmates from Pittsburgh Institution have been painting the town for over a year, and city officials want them to keep it up.

What started as a oneyear pilot project has now expanded into a full-fledged partnership with Correctional Service Canada (CSC) to allow low-risk inmates to help remove graffiti from public property.

Supervised inmates are now dispatched into the community for four days a week, instead of the original twice-weekly release plan.

The program was launched in mid-2011 after Mayor Mark Gerretsen met with CSC officials to support the use of inmates to wash away paint. “We’re

talking about stuff that’s not getting done anyway. Look in our community. There’s graffiti everywhere,” said Mayor Gerretsen at the time.

He also stressed using federal inmates to assist with graffiti removal will not eliminate municipal jobs, and should not be viewed as punitive.

“This is not a chain gang,” Gerretsen asserted.

The city’s public works department provides the paint cans, tools and locations of graffiti, while CSC supplies the labour and supervision.

“Correctional Service Canada supervised and transported two work release program members, twice weekly to address graffiti issues,” according to a December 18 information report to council by public works director Damon Wells.

The inmates were sent to municipal park buildings and boulevard fences to remove the offensive ‘tagging’ this year. “This

project was very successful from both cleanup and deterrence perspectives, at a minimal cost to the city,” Wells explained.

Wells also advised council the inmate community time doubled to four days weekly in 2012 after Utilities Kingston sought support from the program. Minimum-security inmates are removing graffiti tags from electrical boxes and traffic control cabinets in the downtown area. “It was in part due to this that Utilities Kingston chose to increase the number of days that they had the Work Release program members working,” explained Wells.

So far, there have been no reported problems among inmates in the community, despite initial concerns about potential risk to public safety in parks and recreational facilities, high security costs, relying on cheap labour from low risk inmates, limited rehabilitation value and strained relations with city hall’s biggest union.

“We see it as a form of privatization,” said John Hale, president of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (Local 109), representing over 1,000 municipal workers. Hale said while he personally opposes graffiti removal by inmates, he would not file a grievance against the city during the pilot project phase.

A public works employee who used to handle graffiti removal has been reassigned.

Most agree that Kingston has a graffiti problem on washroom walls, buildings, park benches streets signs, postal and utility boxes and business signs that needs ongoing and swift attention.

Inmates must volunteer for graffiti removal duty and may be paid as little as $10 a day.

Critics say work release, a Corrections Canada policy for about 20 years, will hardly provide inmates with the skilled training that was promised following the closure of prison farms.

iSport paying back the city’s loan through KEDCO based on the ticket sales, and also paying SMG to rent the venue. “The obligation to flow $150,000 to KEDCO was based on iSport paying its costs. It didn’t,” Linscott explained.

According to staff, the payment problems first became known about a year ago when iSport put a stop payment on a cheque it had issued to rent the arena. The financial problem soon cascaded to the other agreement partners, including the city.

“It would have been nice to know from SMG that iSport had not paid,” observed Coun. Brian Reitzel.

City officials say the information was not passed on to council because they viewed the outstanding amount as an account receivable and they remain “active” in trying to get the loan paid.

“In hindsight maybe that information … should have come earlier,” Hunt told council.

The loan payment problems were also kept from councillors this fall when they were in the process

of choosing a company to manage the K-Rock Centre for the next five years.

They eventually decided to renew the management contract with SMG. The mayor decided to hold off on signing the contract renewal until council could first discuss the loan shortfall.

Linscott, who along with the CAO handled most council questions on the matter, did not rule out “more forceful action” to recoup the shortfall from iSport.

Linscott says the president of iSport has informed the city that he is first waiting on payment for an unrelated event before he can pay the City of Kingston.

“I see this as learning hard lessons,” noted Coun.

They add the BDO Canadian Open was a local economic success, and that Kingston should not shy away from pursuing future sport-tourism events.

However, they promised to be more “cautious” when structuring future agreements that involve municipal money.

Portraits of Power: City policy to photograph former mayors

EMC News – The City of Kingston is hoping to formally revive an old tradition, but with a modern twist.

Paul Robertson, the city’s curator, recommends former mayors be immortalized in photographs instead of paintings, and that their images be displayed in City Hall.

“The City of Kingston

does not have a policy regarding the creation of official portraits of its mayor either during their term or upon leaving office,” explained Robertson.

He says portraits to honour former mayors serve several purposes; to mark the mayor’s term in office, serve as an historical record of that person’s contribution, and make a statement about the continuity of civic govern-

ment.

The recommendation, if approved by council, would allow city officials to create a roster of photographers and set up an initial budget of $15,000 to cover the cost of commissioning portraits of former mayors since amalgamation in 1998. The new policy was discussed at the administrative policies committee last week, and will likely go to council for a fi-

Donner and Blitzen pay a visit to Kingston

EMC Events - Though Rudolph may be the most famous reindeer of all according to the popular song, Donner and Blitzen certainly got the celebrity treatment in Kingston this past weekend. These two of Santa’s special reindeer came for a visit to the Frontenac Mall on Dec. 15 and 16. Santa, of course, was also nearby, posing for photos as usual.

Admission to this event was free with the donation of a nonperishable food item. Many folks brought much more than just one, and by the end of the weekend, the food bins were filled with hundreds of items, all of which are being donated to the Kingston Food Bank.

As for these famous reindeer, they were greeted by dozens of kids and adults alike, and everyone had the chance to get up close and personal with these magical creatures.

“The kids of all ages are enjoying today’s event,” says Louise Sherwood of Sherwoods Reindeer Farm in Napanee.

Sherwood accompanied Donner and Blitzen to Kingston.

“It’s been a steady flow of people for sure.” In fact, she estimated that they had seen several hundred already by mid-afternoon.

The Sherwoods have been in the reindeer business for eight years, and they have been bringing Donner and Blitzen to Kingston for three years now. Kids are able to touch the animals, pose for photos with them, or just observe their gentle disposition. The Sherwoods also sell trinkets such as carved wooden reindeer and decorative antlers. (Don’t worry; the reindeer shed them naturally).

Each year, Donner and Blitzen’s visit amasses a huge amount of food for the local food bank, but also brings joy to many faces as they come in

CFKA Grants help many worthy organizations

EMC News - On Dec. 12, the Community Foundation for Kingston and Area (CFKA) held its Fall grant ceremony at Pathways to Education in Kingston’s north end. CFKA awarded grants to 42 local organizations, the funds of which total more than $120,000. The Grant Selection Committee received so many strong applications that the number of recipients for this season is nearly double the number of years past.

One organization that was awarded a grant at last Wednesday’s ceremony was Able Sail Kingston, an organization that works towards

making sailing an accessible sport for folks with mobility impairments. ASK uses highly specialized sailing equipment; the Martin 16 boat, for instance, is unsinkable and won’t capsize because of its oversized keel. It also has controls within a 120 degree field so that sailors don’t need to rotate to operate the watercraft. ASK even has sip-andpuff capabilities for people with tetraplegia to use.

The group is receiving a $4,000 grant through the Larry Gibson Community Fund, the McNevin Fund, the Ruth and Stu Barton Community Fund, and the Phil Quattrochi Memorial Fund. As for how the grant will be spent, Board of Directors member Matt

White has specific plans: “All of the grant money will go towards sails and equipment. Our equipment is very expensive, and for safety reasons we always want to have it in top operating condition.”

The funds will also help to keep membership fees low, so that no community member is unable to participate because of financial restrictions.

As for the group’s impact on the community, participant reactions speak for themselves. As White remarks, “One of our sailors said, ‘The only time I forget I can’t walk is when I’m dreaming or sailing.’” Thanks to these generous donors and the CFKA, Able Sail will be able to pro-

vide another season of safe and accessible recreation to Kingston sailing enthusiasts.

The South Frontenac Community Services Corporation, another grant recipient, is likewise committed to accessibility and safety, albeit in a far different manner. SFCSC, located in the Frontenac County, is an organization that provides health support services and social support programs. This group received a grant of $1,500 through the Larry Gibson Estate, which will go towards purchasing winter tires for their transport van. This van is used to carpool seniors in the area to social events, appointments, and other engagements.

Executive Director of the program David Townsend says, “Without it, they would not be able to access the Adult Day Programs or the Diner Club.” These are services that vastly improve the seniors’ quality of life and also help many care-providers as well. The purchase of the van, though used, was a burden in operating costs.

Townsend went on to say that the grant will not only allow them to winterize the vehicle, but also put their own funds towards other meaningful resources.

“We now have funds to purchase small weights, exercise therabands and other equipment to develop a more complete exercise program for these same participants.”

Towsend, like many of the grant recipients at Wednesday’s ceremony, hopes that their support doesn’t go unnoticed by residents of either Frontenac Township or Kingston.

“My hope is that our community can complete the circle and support CFKA who in turn manages to support many of us.”

Twas the Night Before Council As city councillors nestle in to the holiday season, we pause to remember some of their festive moods of the past year. What better way to do that than by putting a local twist on the classic Christmas poem, Twas the Night Before Christmas.

With the KRC contract renewed, and a casino that sounds so great, Both sides will make sure there is plenty of debate.

The Mayor’s Chain it had tightened, looking to his left and right, The media knew in a moment it was going to be a long

night.

He had a thick skin enforcing the procedural rules, But the challenges came aplenty, ’cause they were no fools.

Third crossing, outdoor smoking, Belle Park golf and living wage, The priorities kept evolving with each agenda page.

A power struggle ensued and we took lots of notes,

The issues, they passed, by the slimmest of votes.

As the 11pm hour drew closer, we heard more chatter, Another meeting would be cut short, but for time-sensitive matters.

And the social media mayor exclaimed as he arose for the night, Tweets, streaming and Facebook give me strength to argue who’s really right!

Councillors were already nestled, all set in their ways, With visions of winning every vote, every day.

And the Mayor with his gavel, and his colleagues with views, Their quotes and comments always made for interesting news.

At the next off-site meeting there arose such a commotion, I raced back from the coffee urn to see who wrote that motion.

Tangible memories Coughlar's Corner

EMC Editorial – We all have them—those prized family items that we hope one day will be passed on to us; items that hold fond memories for us and that we will cherish until a time that we similarly pass them on to our own children.

When I think of these items there are a few that immediately spring to mind: a family cookbook and record collection.

When I think of my family cookbook, images of my dad and mom working in the kitchen flash through my mind. My dad enjoyed cooking, but if memory serves, my mom always had a heavy hand in whatever concoction he was working on.

The cookbook itself likely wouldn’t exist without her; much of it is written in her hand.

This cookbook contains

recipes broken down into a variety of categories, from beef, chicken, pork, pasta, vegetables, soup, appetizers, pickling and preserves, cakes, pies, squares, muffins, pudding, and drinks.

There’s even a tab for miscellaneous items.

I’m not ashamed to admit that I don’t cook. Not only that, I don’t particularly like to cook. It may come as a surprise then that I really want this cookbook. What makes that statement even more shocking is that I have probably only tried a handful of recipes inside this cookbook. You see, while my tastes have evolved, I have always been a picky eater, and many of these recipes fall outside my comfort zone. For instance, there’s a recipe in the book called Tom’s Clam Chowder. I’ve heard from family that it’s delicious; I’ve never tried it, nor do I think I’d like it.

Similarly, I’ve heard that the both the Chili and Chili sauce recipes are great; I’ve never had either.

I have no doubt that there are recipes within this book that I will never try, but I’ve never had the opportunity to sit down, go through them

all and see if there aren’t those that I would love to give a shot. You never know, maybe a recipe or two might make the idea of making dinner a little more enjoyable. I don’t know how to explain it, but I just get this warm feeling when I open up this black binder full of yellowed lined pages. It’s a piece of family history I just want to hold onto.

The second piece of family memorabilia I’m attached to is my family’s record collection. I can’t even say how many albums are among the lot, but there are at least two that make me want to ensure the collection stays in the family.

I remember Sunday nights where the four of us, my mother, father, brother and I, would listen to records in the living room. My favourites as a kid were Whitney

by Whitney Houston and Billy Idol, the solo debut by the so named rocker. If I recall correctly, I loved these Sunday night’s so much that I did a class project on them which included a drawing of me dancing on the coffee table.

Sure, I listen to and enjoy music, but I certainly don’t have an iPod library in the thousands. Most of the music I listen to in a given day comes from the radio in my car. So again, it may sound surprising that I would want to hold on to hundreds of records, most of which are by artists I’ve likely never heard of. Again, it’s that feeling. I haven’t put one of these records on the turnstile in years, but to this day when I hear White Wedding or I Wanna Dance with Somebody on the radio I get ridiculously excited and have the urge to belt out the lyrics.

At the end of the day, there may be recipes I never try or records I’ll never listen to, and I’ll likely end up sharing both of these items with my brother—he enjoys food more than I do and has a greater knowledge of music—but these are tangible memories from my childhood, memories of my family and times spent with them. Memories that one day Ryan and I can recreate with our own children. I can picture those future memories even now.

Accuracy suffers in the digital age EMC Editorial - Many debates were started in the wake of the latest mass shooting in the U.S. This one, at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, seems to have rocked the world in a different way than other recent shootings, including those at a movie theatre in Aurora, Colorado and at a Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin. That’s because the majority of the victims were innocent children whose lives were cruelly ended far too soon, and others were adults who died trying to protect them.

Those debates should and will carry on in the weeks to come – debates about gun control, mental illness, school security and victims’ rights.

But one shocking element of the Newtown school shooting was the media coverage of the event, primarily the inaccurate information that was reported for hours following the tragedy.

That day, multiple news agencies reported the name of the shooter as if it was fact. It was also reported that the shooter’s mother worked at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Neither of those “facts” were true.

When it comes to breaking news, a journalist’s duty of care – which should include verifying the facts before reporting them as such – seems to be in conflict with news organizations’ desire to be first, to “scoop” the competition. And once one outlet reports inaccurate information, other outlets seem to feel it’s justified to repeat it. After all, it was someone else’s mistake.

One CNN panellist defended the media’s inaccurate reports, saying that in the age of instant information there’s little time to stop and verify the accuracy of what you’re reporting.

We must recognize that such irresponsible journalism can have significant ramifications, not only for those involved in tragic events but for society as a whole. Knowing the Newtown shooter was dead, there was no need to rush to identify him. One police source apparently confused the names of the shooter and his brother accidentally, but why not wait for an official report? What affect will the mix-up have on the man who was known as a killer for several hours?

Imagine how inaccurate reports will become, and the subsequent potential damage they could have, if this becomes the new normal. We live in a digital age and people do turn to Twitter and Facebook for breaking information. News outlets have a responsibility to be the resource people can turn to when they want the facts, and later, when they need context for what happened or analysis of the issues at hand.

Let Twitter be the place where people mistakenly identify the shooter. Newspapers and television news stations should be the places where people get it right.

Frontenac Islands remuneration way out of line Correspondent

EMC news-In May of 2012 Frontenac Islands council commissioned Frontenac County Human Resources to undertake a policy review of municipality’s current remuneration (staff and council) against other comparable municipalities. At the same time of Frontenac Islands 2012 budget discussions, $20,000 was set aside as a contingency for the remuneration out-

comes, if any were identified and approved.

Deputy Mayor Jones was the lead councillor on this township file working with Frontenac County’s labour relations specialist Colleen Hickey. “I thought it was appropriate that this report be tabled at a public meeting,” he said as he welcomed Ms Hickey to the Frontenac Islands December council meeting there to provide the outcomes of the study report.

The report focused on

criteria such as population, operating budgets/expenses, number of full time equivalent staff , municipal bylaws, compensation review, committee policies, web sites, etc.

According to Ms Hickey the study identified eight suitable comparators including Central and North Frontenac and Tweed among others.

As it turned out , she said “remuneration for Frontenac Islands is significantly lower than the other similar sized townships” as identi-

fied in the breakdown of the data. Her review summarized incremental increases up to the median for council to consider. She also reminded council that “considering remuneration periodically to ensure fair and equitable remuneration is the responsible thing for a council to do.” Deputy Mayor Jones noted tabulations of incremental increases up to the median, $55,000.

‘This review brings it all together,” Councillor Springgay noted. “And includes certain parameters ( extra meetings, mileage, per diems etc.) that also needed to be considered. Based on 60 % of the average would get you close to Tweed,” she said. “I’m not sure about 50%.”

Deputy Mayor Jones identified present remuneration for a councillor as 18 % of the average. As the discussion proceeded it was agreed that the $20,000 set aside would be used (pro rated) to adjust council members remuneration although it was also noted that that amount was only enough to bring it up to 50% of comparable municipalities,(“still a big gap,” Mayor Doyle said.)

The resolution passed by council noted that council had acted responsibly in undertaking the review of HR policy, procedures and equity, and its resulting report which illustrates the lower remuneration of Frontenac Islands council. As stated above council will appropriate the $20,000, 2012 budget allocation pro rata across the

mayor and councillors present compensation. There was some hesitation about 100 % in one jump. “If we vote on it we may not vote on the average.. ,” Springgay said. “ We all want to feel comfortable with what we are doing,” Mayor Doyle said.

Council amended the original resolution postponing the discussion to increase its mayor and council remuneration in 2013 to the average of the comparators, to a budget meeting to be held in January 2013.

Council will also establish a compensation review committee for the purpose of reviewing all staff and council remuneration on a regular basis.

While remuneration remains far below that of similar sized townships, the decisions taken thus far means council members will receive 50% of what members in those township’s receive annually. Presently the Mayor of Frontenac Islands receives $5,644.00; the Deputy Mayor $4,154.00 and Councillors $2,122.00.

In other business: HIRA”s Edward Beseau presented a number of concens with regard to the Baseline Trail on Howe Island. “Maybe we moved into this too quickly,” He said. “Lots of grey areas., Not everyone happy. People worried about safety, ATV’s and snow mobiles Councillor Norris asked that HIRA keep an open mind. “The trail is going as far as the marsh, a quarter mile from the lower side road, will

open and there is insurance,” he said. “Everyone will be notified about where we are working and signs are going up identifying the trail. Anywhere else is private highway.”

A further HIRA concern was an alert system for the ferry. “We are not happy with Frontenac County’s Paul Charbonneau.” Beseau said. “When the ferry is out of service we need an alert system and we can help make that happen.”

Councillor Norris assured him that council would follow up with the county.

Council approved a Christmas bonus of $50. for permanent staff and $25. for part time staff.; Passed a motion that a roof over the rink on Wolfe Island is a priority; established a tentative date for an Official Plan review of changes with Planner Joe Gallivan.

Concerns were raised about speed limits particularly on Howe Island Drive.

The suggestion being those posted are wrong and too high. HI resident Terry Botten suggested that the Christmas bonuses need to be looked at.“That’s not a lot of cash.”

Botten thanked council for their efforts and wished them a Happy Christmas. “What! no cookies this year.”

Canadian Blood Services seeking holiday miracle makers

EMC News – As the Christmas holiday season approaches and Kingston and area residents prepare to gather with family and friends to celebrate and exchange gifts, Canadian Blood Services is asking eligible residents to help give the gift of life to someone in need this holiday season.

Serreh Koeslag, community development coordinator with Canadian Blood Services, explains that the local organization sees a drop in donors in and around the holiday season, a time when many donors are out of town or busy with other activities.

“It’s the holiday season, the time of year for really giving, but people may not always think of giving blood as part of that giving; they think of giving gifts, but this is a gift, it’s a gift of life,” she says.

Koeslag notes that the need for blood doesn’t take a holiday, and many people will spend their holiday season receiving cancer treatment or emergency

care.

“The need for blood never stops. We’re heading into a holiday season and unfortunately those patients with leukemia and different cancers are still there; Leukemia isn’t taking a holiday,” she says.

“Some Leukemia patients can be using up to eight units of blood a week, so that’s eight donors at least for every patient.”

In addition, Koeslag notes that poor road conditions as a result of winter weather combined with increased traffic due to the holiday season can result in more accidents.

“We can never really account for emergencies, so it’s nice to be able to know that if something happens we’re here and we’re ready to go,” she says.

In order to meet the continued need for blood, Canadian Blood Services has organized some extra clinic days during the holiday season. They include Saturday, Dec. 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Wednesday, Dec. 26 (Boxing Day) from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and Monday, Dec. 31 (New Year’s Eve) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Clinic, at 850 Gardiners Rd., will be closed on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, but open for its regular clinic hours Thursday, Dec. 27 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Koeslag notes that Canadian Blood Services hopes to collect 32 units of blood during each of its special holiday clinics, and 62 units of blood during its regular Thursday clinic.

She says that while many donors may be out of town for the holidays, Canadian Blood Services hopes to connect with those who have remained in town.

“We’re hoping this year, with being so close to the mall, that we might be able to tie in with last minute shoppers and Boxing Day sale shoppers.”

For those who maybe haven’t donated blood before and are thinking about doing so during their holiday travels, Koeslag notes that it is not a lengthy process.

“We suggest that you make sure you have an hour, that’s from the time you’ve check in till after

Koeslag notes that in the past the community has answered Canadian Blood Services call and helped

to fill the need during the holiday season.

“We do actually have donors where this is what they do for Christmas, it’s part of their Christmas tradition…which is fantastic.”

Clear snow and ice from sidewalks (but don’t push snow on to the street).

By law, business property owners or occupants of businesses which front on to public sidewalks, are required to remove any snow or ice (including roof-top snow, ice or icicles, see below), which may be hazardous to pedestrians. These businesses must remove snow and ice from sidewalks “as soon as is practicable but, in any event, not later than 12 hours after the end of the precipitation that caused the snow and ice.”

Businesses that do not comply could face a fine of up to $5,000. It is also illegal to move snow on to streets or sidewalks. The City’s Public Works department recommends that homeowners also clear their snow within 12 hours of a snowfall as a courtesy to their neighbours.

Remove icicles hazardous to pedestrians.

Owners and occupants of every building in Kingston must remove the snow and ice, including icicles, from the roof of that building whenever it poses an immediate danger to pedestrians. Property owners or occupants who do not comply with the above regulations could face a fine of up to $5,000.

The City of Kingston is pursuing the eventual disposal of 7 Wright Cres. for the purpose of affordable housing. The City would like to explore the interests of experienced notfor-profit organizations and private sector companies to propose a development plan for 7 Wright Cres. that incorporates a component of affordable housing.

The City will be inviting interested proponents to submit preliminary development proposals through a forthcoming Request for Information.

As an initial step in the process, interested organizations and companies are being invited to tour the existing site and building. Site visits will be scheduled for registered parties only and will occur on the afternoon of Wednesday, Jan.16, 2013.

Influenza season has arrived in KFL&A with a vengence, Public Health says EMC News - Influenza activity has been increasing in Canada over the last few weeks and in the KFL&A area, the number of cases is on the upswing. There have been several confirmed cases of influenza A, probably the virulent H3N2 strain, in the KFL&A area since the end of November, representing hundreds of cases in the community. These cases appear to be primarily amongst those under the age of 20. “Once influenza has arrived, the most important thing is not to spread the infection to others, especially those who are most vulnerable to the complications of the disease,� says Dr. Ian Gemmill, Medical Officer of Health for KFL&A Public Health. “That means staying home from work or school when ill and taking every precaution not to expose those people who are most at risk for complications.�  Residents can learn more about managing influenza in the home by visiting http:// www.kflapublichealth.ca/ Files/Resources/123_management_influenza_in_the_ home.pdf Influenza is a serious, acute respiratory illness that is easily transmitted from person to person or through direct contact with surfaces contaminated by the influenza virus. In particular,

those at higher risk of influenza related complications include the elderly, young children, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems or chronic medical conditions. About 10 per cent of Ontarians become ill with seasonal influenza each year. Most people will recover within a couple of weeks but influenza is hardest on these high risk groups, who have a higher rate of hospitalisation and death. “Other things that one can do to avoid spreading influenza are not to visit people who are vulnerable to the complications of influenza, particularly those in long-term care homes, if one has not been immunised against influenza or has a febrile or respiratory illness,� says Dr. Gemmill. “In addition, one should wash one’s hands frequently and practise cough etiquette, that is coughing into one’s sleeve.�

The good news is that influenza can be easily avoided through immunisation. Influenza vaccine is the safest and most effective way of protecting one’s self and one’s loved ones. It is not too late to get vaccine against influenza, since it also can protect against influenza B, which may appear later in the influenza season.

Window Wonderland Winners!

The Rocking Horse took top honours in this year’s Window Wonderland.

Judges were impressed with its theme of a sleigh full of toys being pulled by reindeer and steered by a penguin.

Brewing Company (34 Clarence St) was able to deck out their windows, doorway—even the Alleyway—in such a way that the judges were quite tempted to go inside and warm up.

Best Overall: The very best of the best! The winner in this category incorporated all of the above elements to take the cake. The Rocking Horse (193 Princess St.) has once again claimed the top prize. This window dazzled the judges with a sleigh full of toys being pulled by reindeer. EMC News - Judges hit the streets last week to find out which downtown spots had the best and “sparkliest� holiday window displays. After much deliberation the following choices were made: Most Original: This category looked for the window with the most interesting/nontraditional take on Holiday items and themes while maintaining joyful Holiday Spirit. Birds ‘n Paws (79 Brock St.) had a delightful “Happy Howlidays� window, complete with dog reindeer. A very close runner up was Minotaur Games & Gifts (165 Princess St) with a unique Christmas Circus display.

Best Holiday Theme: This category looked for more a more traditional display and was won by annual favourite Send in the Clowns (120 Princess St.).

Honourable mention goes to Kingston Frameworks (198 Princess St.).

Best Merchandised: In this category, the judges were looking to see how well merchandise was incorporated into a holiday theme. This award went to the outdoorsy window at Trailhead (262 Princess St.). Honourable mention goes to past winner of this category, Vandervoort’s General Store (77 Princess St.) Best Light Display: The judges were looking for a window that immediately grabbed their attention.

Light up the night EMC Events – The Kingston Jewish Council held Light Up The Night, a free public celebration of Hanukkah, at Springer Market Square on Wednesday, Dec. 12.

Festivities included children’s activities, music video projection, hot chocolate, a performance by the Kingston Jewish Council Choir and a children’s dance. When asked why he delivers gifts at Christmas, Santa said: “It is a tradition established by the Three Wise Men bringing gifts to Baby Jesus.”

He makes his trek on Christmas Eve to follow the tradition of the Three Wise Men following the star to Bethlehem.

I wondered who gives Santa and Mrs. Claus gifts.

“The look of love and wonder in the eyes of the children are all the gifts that we require,” he said.

To get prepared for his own Christmas at home, Santa said he has to put up his Christmas tree by midNovember, before he starts visiting malls and parades.

Santa Claus was elusive about how he gets down chimneys and why he uses them, saying it’s all Santa magic. He said to tell children not to worry if there’s a fire in the fireplace or if they live in an apartment or home with no chimney. And as for that protective dog you may have, again, not a problem.

Santa Claus. The incorrect number turned out to be the CONAD Commander-inChief’s hotline.

Colonel Harry Shoup, the Director of Operations, decided to have his staff track Santa via radar. Children who called the number in the advertisement were given updates on Santa’s location.

Since 1955, NORAD has tracked Santa every year.

NORAD staff members, as well as their family and friends, volunteer their time to respond to children’s phone calls and emails from around the world. On December 24, they keep tabs on Santa.

Children, and curious adults, can follow Santa’s travels on December 24 at www.noradsanta.org.

I would like to thank Rhonda Mosher of the Cataraqui Centre, who personally connected me with Santa Claus. She said working with Santa is pretty special.

“I get to go home every night and tell my daughter, “Today I was talking with Santa, and he was sharing with me some stories of his special visits with children,’” said Mosher. “I will never forget when I overheard my daughter telling her best friend, ‘Did you know that my mom is friends with Santa, and that’s how she gets to have him work at the mall?

We associate snow with Christmas because we live in a country that experiences winter weather in December. Santa pointed out that in places like Australia it’s summer on December 25.

With all the sniffles and other health worries going around at this time of year I asked what Santa does to stay healthy.

“I get the flu shot, as everyone should,” he said.

Even NORAD, the North American Air Defense system, gets excited about Santa.

According to the folks at NORAD, that’s because of the late Colonel Harry Shoup.

In 1955, NORAD (then known as CONAD, the Continental Air Defense Command) started to track Santa, thanks to a Sears Roebuck and Company advertising misprint. The ad contained a number for children to call

EMC News - Holy Cross Secondary School has a long history of participating in social justice campaigns, and this holiday season is no exception. Once again, the school has been running

its annual Advent Campaign to help support local charities.

This year, the student council challenged their peers to raise $1,000 for “winter warmth survival kits,” which include socks, hats, gloves, a blanket, toiletries, and other essentials.

They will also be doing a group trip to see recent blockbuster The Hobbit, with a slightly increased ticket price in order to generate revenue. Of course, much of the money is also coming from donations by the students themselves.

“One class raised over $100,” says leadership student Simon Smith, impressed by the efforts of his peers.

But for Forster, the fundraising itself isn’t a longterm solution.

“It’s not just raising

money. You also have to look at what causes poverty,” he says. According to Forster, CICS and the student council spend time discussing social action and how they can promote justice.

“It’s a leadership opportunity,” Forster says of the campaign, but it’s also a means to understanding impoverishment. For instance, the school is also holding a “street retreat,” which will allow students to visit local shelters, volunteer their time, and generally get to know at-risk folks in the community.

As Forster sagely notes, “We all need to help each other.”

The school is sure to surpass their goal of creating 50 survival kits.

The campaign is spearheaded by the Grade 12 leadership class, which consists of student council members as well as volunteers with the school’s Crusaders in Community Service club (CICS). This season, their mission doesn’t stop at the local level. They have also pledged to raise $2,000 to help build a house in Kingston, Jamaica. This initiative will have Holy Cross partnering with RegiopolisNotre Dame Catholic Secondary School as well as the international organization Food for the Poor.

“The neat part is that we’re not just raising money,” says Forster. “Our kids will help build it.” Based on essay applications, the school will be selecting a small group of students to travel to Jamaica for this project, which will be taking place in February of 2013.

Queen’s ARPool development receives international interest

EMC News - Two Queen’s students, currently pursuing master’s degrees in computer engineering, just received a unique opportunity to show off their work on an international scale. Salar Awan and Kevin Hughes recently travelled to London to give a demo of the ARPool system they have been working on at Queen’s. “ In October we went there for the recording of Gadget Man. The recording was in a pub and we set up the system with the pool table; Stephen

Fry and Jeremy Clarkson played with the system and it went really well.” said Awan.

The ARPool system has been in development for the past 10 years and originated as a robotic system called “Deep Green”. In 2006, developers of the project started working on a projection system instead of a robot.

“ARPool is an augmented reality version of Deep Green and it is a more portable project. Before we couldn’t take the project anywhere to show it off, so that was one of the driving factors behind the ARPool system. It is portable and uses a lot of the same technol-

ogy as before just without the robot,” explained Hughes.

So how does the system work? ARPool incorporates ball detection and cue tracking through a ceiling mounted video camera. These parameters are then fed into a pool physics simulator which calculates the collisions and trajectories of the pool balls. The player is then guided, through projection, in their shots and can make decisions accordingly.

Awan and Hughes only started working on the project recently, but both were very excited to receive the opportunity to work on the system.

“The project is really cool and really visual and it captures people’s attention and imagination. I enjoy working on it because it is so different and I can see results immediately as opposed to a lot of the research we do, you don’t get to see as quick and immediate results. It is incredibly visual so if you add something new or change something you can see the effect immediately,” said Hughes.

While the system may appear finished, there is still work that needs to be done and tweaking that occurs regularly.

“We are always improving the system. We have taken it

We are now aiming to take it to India in March. We are just focusing on getting more publicity and awareness about the project and eventually developing it

into a tool that can be used for teaching people how to play pool and helping professional pool players,” said Awan.

Another long-term goal for the project is commercialization.

“I think the long-term goal is to try to find a company that would like to use the technol-

ogy and commercialize it, but we also use it as a tool to show what computer vision is and to get people interested in computer engineering and Queen’s itself in terms of research,” added Hughes.

EMC News - Our actions have great power. We have a lot of voting power. It’s in your wallet.

At this time of year, many, myself included, shop for gifts for loved ones. As you’re out shopping for friends and family, consider going local.

You’ll benefit and build our community.

There truly is a trickledown effect, but it’s not like the one we hear about in certain political campaigns.

Where do you live, eat, drink and send your children to school? That’s also a good place to invest your shopping

dollars.

Local businesses employ local people, i.e., my neighbor and your neighbor.

“We, the employees of Cataraqui Centre, are also members of this community,” said Susan St. Clair, the shopping mall’s general manager.

“We live, work and support local business. We are all in this together.”

That notion of being in it together is vital.

Not only does shopping locally support local jobs, but I’m going to get better service from someone I know and talk with regularly. Don’t believe that? Try communicating with a call centre when you’ve got a problem.

I like to know who I’m buying from. I want to know where they get their supplies and products.

Local businesses are also huge supporters of local charitable efforts. Is a company in some far away city or land going to support a local literacy

group or theatre company?

Not likely. But local businesses do support local charities and non-profit organizations.

Not surprisingly, studies show that the closer a company is to the community, the greater their commitment (including financial) to the community. Non-profit organizations receive an average of 250% greater support from small businesses than from multinational corporations.

Especially crucial are oneof-a-kind businesses. They give our community a distinctive flavor. This region has a positive and unique character that isn’t replicated elsewhere. I like to support places like County Cider of Prince Edward County, along with the farmgate veggie sellers.

Mary’s Christmas surprise made her rethink her beliefs

we could go to the tree. As had been the custom for the past few years, the tree was in the kitchen rather than in the small parlour that was as cold as an ice house in the winter.

Under the tree was an array of presents wrapped in green or red tissue paper, and as usual Father took on the job of handing them out.

There was a book for each of us. I have no idea where Mother got the money, but every Christmas and every birthday, we five children could count on getting a book. And there was a new bright red ball for my game of Jacks.

And there wrapped in red paper was my first pair of long white stockings! I was so thrilled, I paid no at-

tention to the box Father put at my knee. I had never had white stockings before, and I couldn’t wait until I could rip off the beige ribbed ones I had put on when I got dressed, because I would be wearing the white ones to church!

Father nudged the box towards me, but I was too excited about the white stockings to pay it much heed.

Imagine! White stockings!

Finally, I opened the box beside me, and there inside was a brand new pair of storebought shoes! Black leather, they were. No laces! Audrey said they were called pumps.

I didn’t care what they were called. I had my very first pair of store bought shoes!

Mother looked as pleased as I felt...almost as if she were

looking at them for the very first time.

I didn’t stop admiring my Christmas gifts long enough to wonder where the money came from for new stockings, and new shoes.

I rubbed my hands over the soft leather in the pumps, and put the stockings up to my nose to smell their newness.

And lost in the joy of these new treasures, treasures I had never owned before, I wondered, maybe I was wrong. Maybe there was a Santa Claus after all!

May I take this opportunity to wish everyone the most wonderful of Christmases, and may all of you remember it’s true meaning, and rejoice with loved ones around you.

EMC Lifestyle - That Christmas I was a year older, and a lot wiser. I tried not to think of the past Christmas.

The Christmas Eve when I found out there really wasn’t a Santa Claus. I had heard rustling downstairs in the middle of the night, and crept down the stairwell to see my sister eating the cookies I had left out for Santa, and the kitchen table covered with tissue paper, and gifts being wrapped...not by Santa, but

by Father. It was the year Mother had to spend the holiday in the Renfrew hospital, and it was sad enough for me without discovering there really was no Santa after all.

I told no one what I had seen. And I had kept the secret locked in my heart for the entire year.

And so that Christmas, I tried to act excited. It would spoil it for everyone if they thought I no longer believed in Santa Claus.

I was told to be good, or Santa would pass by our old log house in Northcote! Eat everything on your plate... you know Santa doesn’t like little girls who waste food!

And so it went all those days before Christmas. And I kept my secret buried deep in my heart.

Time and again Mother said money was scarcer than ever that year. Turkey Fair day hadn’t been as good as other years. The Depression was at its worse. But nonetheless, I was told to write my letter to Santa. My sister Audrey told me not to ask for anything that would be considered frivolous.

“Remember, it isn’t only our family that is poor. Everyone in the entire world is poor,” Audrey said with conviction. “Santa won’t be able to bring everything you ask for, so be careful what you put in your letter,” she said.

Little did my sister know that my belief in Santa had, a year ago, come to an end.

And so pretending to be in deep concentration, I sat at the old pine table early in December and printed out my Christmas wishes in a letter to Santa.

I wanted long white stockings just like bad Marguirite wore, I asked for a wood pencil box like my little friend Joyce had. But what I wanted more than anything in the whole world, was a pair of store-bought shoes.

I had running shoes for the summer, but in the winter I had to wear boys brown laced brogues. And Mother didn’t have to buy them. They came in the hand-me-down box Aunt Lizzie sent regularly from Regina.

All the time I knew asking for something as costly as store-bought shoes was an exercise in futility. I would be very lucky if I got a small toy from the Five and Dime Store in Renfrew. After all, hadn’t Mother warned us that it would be a lean Christmas that year?

And as Christmas day drew near, I didn’t know the excitement of other years.

Knowing what I did, took a lot of the joy out of the holiday for me. Of course, no one knew my feelings, having kept my secret for a year.

shoes I had ever clapped eyes on. Decidedly boys, and when they arrived, they looked like they had hardly been on anyone’s feet. And how I hated them. But I was the only one the shoes would fit. They were much too small for any of my three brothers, and my sister Audrey, 11 years my senior, certainly couldn’t be expected to wear boys shoes to the Northcote School. And so I was the one to get the hateful shoes.

And so that year, I put in my letter to Santa that I would be very grateful for a pair of store-bought girl’s shoes.

And I underlined “girl’s” . I knew full well there was no Santa to read of my Christmas wish, but nonetheless I dutifully wrote the letter, which Mother would make

Tablet computer shopping Tablets are the musthave portable computing device of the moment, making them a top holiday gift. In just a few short years, the number of people with tablets has increased dramatically.

Within a year of the iPad’s introduction into the technological lexicon, 11 percent of Americans already owned one. As other tablets and upgraded versions of the iPad entered the market, tablets became more and more popular.

A study from the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism in collaboration with The Economist Group found that the majority of tablet owners (77 percent) use their tablets every day,

using them for an average of about 90 minutes.

It’s such an obvious statement that local businesses provide local jobs. We sometimes forget the other side of that statement: failing to support local businesses hurts local jobs.

In addition to building community and a strong local economy, here are some other reasons to support local businesses.

Diversity Freedom of choice is threatened when buyers from international chains decide what goes on shelves. “So what,” you say, with regard to consumer goods.

“That brings down prices.” Does it really? Is it worth other costs?

What about our choices of things like reading material and music?

I want as wide a variety as possible.

I was walking through a small neighborhood grocery shop in New York recently with a friend from Toronto. He commented that this small store had far greater variety than big box stores he’s been in at home. It’s because the local shopkeeper is doing his or her best to provide what the local population wants. It’s the same in every community.

Uniqueness “Best of” contests and polls typically feature a local shop or business offering a service that’s

a wee bit different. Think of Chez Piggy or The Rocking Horse children’s toy store.

Local owners may have invested their life savings into a company. They’re going to do their best to meet the needs of customers.

Ethics Want to know where a product came from? That’s fairly easy if you’re dealing with a local merchant, especially if the product is also produced or manufactured locally.

EMC Lifestyles - “Hello Brian, After taking my ‘01 Malibu with 221,000 km, into the shop for an oil change I realize that I may have been giving auto engineers too much credit all these years. The technician reported that my intake manifold gasket is leaking, externally only at the moment, but I should keep track of it. That reminds me that the 3.1L V6 was re-built, under warranty, and the new/improved gasket was installed at about 40,000Km. Also, I’ve replaced three front wheel hubs w/ABS sensor.

And I was talking to a friend this past weekend that has a 2005 Toyota Highlander with about the same mileage and he just changed his sixth rear wheel bearing! He does drive country roads to get to his cottage but he never goes off-roading.

Am I just expecting too much or are these examples just ‘outliers’ to the norm?”

Lorne Facey Hard to say about your intake, but any engine gasket that has lasted over 10 years and 181,000 km really doesn’t owe you much.

I can give you some direction on hub/bearing assemblies. As with most common repair parts on popular vehicles, there are often many choices when it comes to part suppliers. Dealerships have original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts and sometimes competitively priced units from their carmakers that carry the same warranty as OEM parts

(and often the same quality) but at a lower price. National and regional chain parts stores can access a variety of parts from national brands down to bargain basement components commonly referred to as ‘white-box’ parts due to their lack of a recognizable label.

Front or rear wheel hub/bearing assemblies can be quite pricey running from $250 to over $500 each for many vehicles but as with most things in life: you get what you pay for. I’ve had some experience with some cheaper white-box bearings that cost less than $100 when the OEM or national brand cousin was well over $300. When these low-cost units were installed they seldom lasted a few months before they became noisy. No matter how much money you save a customer, they are seldom happy with the deal if they have to return in a short time to get the same repair done over again.

My advice on this type of repair is to stick to name brands with a reputable warranty that covers both parts and labour for at least one year or 20,000 km.

Look for makers such as AC Delco, Timken, SKF from aftermarket shops or OEM parts or their competitively priced units from dealerships.

The Auditor General for Ontario recently released a report on several provincial departments and the auto emission testing system known as Drive Clean was one of them. The purpose of the review was to determine if Ontario taxpayers and vehicle owners are getting value for the money they spend on emission testing and if the environment is getting enough improvement to warrant the costs of the program.

The numbers of consumers that actually look forward to taking their vehicle in for emission testing are probably equal to those that enjoy root canal treatment.

The Drive Clean system has had its share of detractors over the years and from the Auditor General’s (AG) office point of view there is room for improvement.

First Ontario certainly isn’t alone inasmuch as there are 30 jurisdictions in North American that require regular vehicle emission testing. Interestingly enough that number is shrinking.

Five U.S. states have ended their emission testing programs; one has announced it will shut down its system next year, and British Columbia will end its testing in 2014. Only Quebec seems to be bucking the trend by planning to bring testing to that province at the end of 2013. Those areas that have ended their programs have done so because of vehicle emission reductions due to improved new vehicle design and build quality, better fuels, more consumer voluntary compliance, and the reduction in the number of older, more polluting vehicles on their roads. Ontario’s AG review found that more than 75 per cent of the total emissions reductions for light-duty vehicles from 1999 to 2010 can be attributed to factors other than the Drive Clean program.

The AG also took the Ontario Ministries of Transportation and the Environment to task for some glaring examples of

questionable practices in emission test avoidance. Vehicles registered to farmers are exempt from emission testing and only a check-mark on a form is all that’s required to identify a vehicle as a farm transport. From 1998 to 2010 the number of farm vehicles on the MTO’s database increased by 90 per cent whereas the number of farms in the province decreased by around 15 per cent. The AG also took Drive Clean to task for the number of conditional passes it handed out.

A conditional pass is provided if a vehicle fails and the estimated cost of any single repair to fix it is over $450 or if a lower cost repair is completed that still doesn’t improve the vehicle to a pass state.

In 2011, 18,000 such conditional passes were issued and seven per cent of the vehicles had no repair work done and of the remainder that did, the average cost was $255. For those vehicles that were repaired, half of them registered higher readings on one of the measured emissions after the work was done, and 25 per cent registered higher on all three tailpipe gas measurements.

The AG believes that the new method of emission testing that will start in 2013 will reduce some of these errors. The new system will involve connecting the vehicle’s onboard computer to the testing station’s computer (for model years 1998 and newer) and relying on the auto’s internal diagnostic system to pinpoint any emission related fault and the appropriate repair. Unfortunately the AG failed to realize that even with more modern vehicle control computers and diagnostic systems; there are still multiple repair possibilities to just about every trouble code in the book.

For those that always thought Drive Clean was a cash-grab, the AG’s report might bring a nod of agreement. The system was always intended to be revenue neutral and seemed to be working that way until recently. In fact it just achieved break-even status in the 2010/11 fiscal year but the 2011/12 season is expected to bring an $11 million surplus and according to a 1998 Supreme Court of Canada decision, that’s a no-no for a user-fee system. EMC News – Eleven years ago, Gretchen Huntley created a series of six stories for her young granddaughter.

“When my granddaughter was about three she never wanted you to read her a storybook, she always wanted you to make up stories,” she explained.

“I made up six of them for her, little short things done in rhyme.”

The stories feature a family known as the Grogs, little yellow furry creatures that have a star on the end of their noses that glows when frightened or excited. They live in a town called Grumple, which is located close to a jelly bean bog.

For years, Huntley’s stories have remained tucked away. That is, until now.

She recently celebrated the launch of her first book this past weekend.

“Recently I kind of thought I’d really like to do something with the one about Cancer.”

As Huntley was creating stories to read to her

young grandchildren, she was also penning a story about Cancer, and some of the life changes that come about as a result of its diagnosis.

Huntley explained that her 42-year-old son has been battling Hodgkin’s Lymphoma for 20 years, and that for her grandchildren, 14-year-old Desiree and nine-year-old John, growing up with a sick parent has become second nature.

“The book grew out of my son’s illness…It was after watching the children and thinking this is second nature to them but what about the children that are just finding out?” she said.

The short story, titled Mama Grog Gets Sick, tells the tale of a mama who is diagnosed with Cancer.

In a gentle way, it walks readers through some side effects mama will face as part of her diagnosis. The story deals with things like nausea, exhaustion, hair loss and fear, but most of all it deals with love. In the end, Mama Grog does get well. The characters in the book were inspired by

Desiree’s childhood drawings, and were brought to life with the help of illustrator Bernadette Truesdell.

“It was just a match made in heaven,” Huntley said of Truesdell’s involvement in the project.

Huntley explained that when someone is diagnosed with Cancer doctors do everything they can to help them understand and come to terms with their diagnosis. They explain what to expect and what will be done to treat them.

It is then up to them to pass that knowledge on to their loved ones.

“When they go home they may have small children. Somehow or another they have to figure out how to bring this to the forefront and explain to these kids that mommy’s going to lose her hair or grandpa’s going to be in the hospital,” she said.

“They have so much on their plate as an adult dealing with it that if there is anything that can just maybe smooth out one bump in the road that’s what I’d like to do [with Mama Grog Gets Sick].”

Huntley hopes that her book will make the journey a little less bumpy for those battling Cancer by making their children more comfortable with the diagnosis. Through personal fundraising efforts, she was able to have 5,000 copies of the book printed.

Locally, copies of the book are available free of charge at Breast Cancer Action Kingston and the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario. Seventy packets have also been shipped out to 70 locations across Canada, which include six copies of the book as well as informational items.

“As long as we have books available we’re going to be giving them to Cancer patients and their families in hopes that it will help them with the little ones,” she said, noting that it would be nice if in the future an organization picked up the book.

“It would be wonderful if an organization felt it was a worthwhile enough project that they might be willing to pick it up.”

Christmas at St. Paul’s

EMC Lifestyle - Students at St. Paul Catholic School are proud to say that our singing voices and acting talents were on display at St. Joseph’s Parish at our annual Advent Mass on the 18th of December and will be again at our Christmas Eve Mass. We will be singing in the choir, serving at the altar, and doing readings for all of the community families to enjoy.

All of the classes, from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 are decorating special bags with all types of different Christmas symbols and joyful pictures on them. Our school and community will fill all the bags with food and they will be sent off to St. Joseph’s Parish and then off to the Food Bank for families who need some help during the holiday season.

The Advent Mass that our school hosts is always great.

We have the lighting of candles and the singing of children. It always brings the whole community together. At the mass we always have a Christmas Pageant in which students from Kindergarten to Grade 3 act out parts of the first Christmas.

Our Christmas Mass is great too. They both bring everyone together to remember Jesus and have a Merry Christmas.

We are proud to prepare for and play a part in these school masses for our school and our community.

For the Christmas Eve and Advent Mass the wonderful Mrs. Fowler will be organizing the choir. She has always led the choir and taught songs to all of the students. Mrs .Fowler said that she has really enjoyed organizing the choir for our school for the

past ten years. In fact, she was inspired by her choir leader, Fok Shen. Mrs .Fowler is also very happy to say that she usually gets around 35 students to participate in the choir every year. We all love Mrs. Fowler for what she does for us and we hope she continues to teach us how to sing beautifully for others!

Every year one of our school’s special Christmas tra-

ditions begins in late November. It starts with a plain brown paper bag. We turn these bags into a sparkling, glowing, and wonderful bags decorated with art from students of all ages.

They are then filled with food items and a lot of Christmas cheer to share with families in need.

We fill the bags because some families cannot get the food they need so easily. This

is why our school’s special tradition is so special to us. We know that the food we have donated is going to families in our community who need it.

We spoke to father Jan of St. Joseph’s Parish and he said that that our lovely Christmas bags will directly benefit at least 50 families. They will be filled with food through the generosity of the St. Joseph’s community, collected into

hampers, and delivered to the Food Bank on December the 21st. Our school is very happy to be doing the Christmas bags for the community.

Our school community has many Christmas traditions and we are very excited to participate in them this year and for years to come. So Merry Christmas from students, staff, and parents at St. Paul !

In the 1930’s, there was a revival of Dickensian nostalgia, particularly in Britain. Christmas trees became large and real again, and were decorated with many bells, balls and tinsel.

But wartime England put a stop to many of these trees. It was forbidden to cut trees down for decoration, and with so many raids, many people preferred to keep their most precious heirloom Christmas tree decorations carefully stored away in metal boxes, and decorated only a small tabletop tree with home-made decorations, which could be taken down into the shelters for a little Christmas cheer, when airraid sirens went.

Large trees were erected in public places to give morale to people at this time. Postwar Britain saw a revival of the nostalgic again. People needed the security of Christmas, which is so unchanging in a changing world, as one of the symbols to set them back on their feet. Trees were as large as people

EMC Lifestyle - The Christmas tree is a strong symbol of Christmas. It’s the center of most Christmas celebrations around the world. My family has made it a tradition to visit the Christmas tree farm on Hwy 2 outside of Napanee every year and cut down our own tree. The kids help pick the perfect tree and take turns cutting it down. Once home, they get to decorate the tree themselves. This year I was impressed, they did a really great job hanging the ornaments. Usually I find myself rearranging the tree once they’ve gone to sleep.

I can’t help it—just the perfectionist in me.

Where did this crazy tradition of cutting down a tree and decorating it with prized ornaments come from?

In the 7 th century, a monk from Crediton, Devonshire, went to Germany to teach the Word of God. He spent much of his time in Thuringia, an area which was to become the cradle of the Christmas Decoration Industry.

Legend has it he used the triangular shape of the Fir tree to describe the Holy Trinity of God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The converted people began to revere the Fir tree as God’s tree, as they had previously revered the Oak. Later on they began hanging the tree upside-down, from the ceiling at Christmas time in Central Europe, as a symbol of Christianity.

King Tut never saw a Christmas tree, but he would have understood the tradition which traces back long before the first Christmas. The Egyptians were part of a long line of cultures that treasured and worshipped evergreens.

When the winter solstice arrived, they brought green date palm leaves into their home to symbolize life’s triumph over death.

The Romans celebrated

The 1880’s saw a rise of the Aesthetic Movement.

At this time Christmas trees became a glorious hotchpotch of everything one could cram on; in contrast, aesthetic trees were delicately balanced trees, with delicate colours, shapes, and style. The limited availability of decorations in earlier decades had kept trees small and confined to table tops. Now trees were placed on the floor, and up to the ceiling in height.

Now, with decorations as well as crafts more popular than ever, there was no excuse. Still a status symbol, the larger a tree the more affluent the family which sported it.

After Queen Victoria died, the British went into morning, and the tree somehow died with her for awhile in many homes.

While some families and community groups still had large tinsel strewn trees, many opted for the more convenient table top tree.

These were available in a variety of sizes, and the artificial tree, particularly the Goose Feather Tree, became popular. These were originally invented in 1880’s in Germany, to combat some of the damage being done to Fir trees in the name of Christmas.

In America, the Addis Brush Company created the first brush trees, using the same machinery which made their toilet brushes.

These had an advantage over the feather tree in that they would take heavier

In 1846, the popular Royals, Queen Victoria and her German Prince Albert, were illustrated in the London News. They were standing with their children around a Christmas tree.

Unlike the previous Royal family, Victoria was very popular with her subjects, and what was done at Court immediately became fashionable.

The English tree had become more innovative than the delicate trees of earlier decades. Small toys were popularly hung on the branches, but still more gifts were placed on the table under the tree.

It was around this time, the Christmas tree was spreading into other parts of Europe. Although the German tree was beginning to suffer from mass destruction, as it had become fashion to lop off the tip of a large tree to use as a Christmas tree, which prevented the tree from growing further.

The Christmas tree tradition most likely came to America with Hessian troops during the American Revolution, or with ‘pockets’ of customs relating to the immigrants who had settled in a particular area. Mainly with the German immigrants, and with the rise of communication, did these customs begin to spread?

winter solstice with a feast called Saturnalia, in honor of Saturnus, the god of agriculture. They decorated their houses with greens and lights and exchanged gifts. They gave coins for prosperity, pastries for happiness, and lamps to light one’s journey through life.

Centuries ago in Great Britain, woods priests called Druids used evergreens during mysterious winter solstice rituals. The Druids used holly and mistletoe as symbols of eternal life, and placed evergreen branches over doors to keep away evil spirits.

In early 16 th century, Martin Luther is said to have attached lighted candles to a small evergreen tree, trying to simulate the reflections of the starlit heaven- the heaven that looked down over Bethlehem on the first Christmas Eve. In mid 16 th century, Christmas markets were set up in German towns, to provide everything from Christmas presents, food, and more practical things such as a knife grinder to sharpen the knife to carve the Christmas goose. At these fairs, bakers made shaped gingerbreads and wax ornaments for people to buy as souvenirs of the fair, and take home to hang on their Christmas trees.

From 1700 on, when lights were accepted as part of the decorations, the Christmas tree was well on its way to becoming a tradition in Germany.

Decorations were of a ‘home-made’ variety.

Young ladies spent hours at Christmas crafts, quilting snowflakes and stars, sewing little pouches for secret gifts and paper baskets with sugared almonds in them.

Angels were made to sit at the top of the tree. Candles were often placed into wooden hoops for safety.

The Christmas tree first came to England with the Georgian Kings who came from Germany. Also at this time, German merchants living in England decorated their homes with a Christmas tree. The British public was not fond of the German

Archbishop O’Sullivan Catholic School The Christmas Adventure It was the night before Christmas and jake, Amelia and their dog names cookie were playing outside on Sandringham PL. They were playing truth or dare. After a while they got tired and went outside. They got the Santa tracker out. The red (Which is Santa) was going everywhere. All os a sudden it stopped.

They heard something outside. It sounded like a HOHOHO Merry Christmas! They looked out the window and saw Santa. “It’s only 9:30 Why is Santa here now? Someone will se him!” said Amelia.

Jake went outside. So did Amelia and they saw Santa and Santa saw them.

“What are you doing here someone can see you said jake. “It’s okay I made all of them go to sleep” said Santa “I came here to ask you for help. I have lost all the Christmas presents we only have 4 hours to find them. “If we don’t find them there will be no Christmas!”

I know they are missing somewhere in Kingston” said Santa. “But why can’t you use your magic to find them” said

Amelia. Because the presents are in the dark valley and Santa can’t go there, it’s full of traps.” Said Santa. “We’ll do it” said Amelia. So they left Santa with the t.v on and milk and cookies.

Cookie the dog went with them. Jake was more scared that she was wining really loudly. It’s good they had blitzen and Roudoluph. Roudoluph and Blitzen were a big help for the upside down walking. When they came to a trap Amelia was on Roudoulph and jake on the while the elf was carriying cookie. There were about 1- traps that they had to go though to get the presents only one hour and 30 minutes left. All of a sudden Amelia fell. They all said “Amelia” They tried to pick her up because there lava with sharks in it.

They only had one hour and 20 minutes left. Amelia’s hands were slipping and the presents were right there, so blitzen quickly go the presents and ran back. The sharks were jumping.

“Ready on 3, 1, 2, 3 said jake. They took Amelia out and ran out out of dark valley.

They went to Santa and returned the presents.

He was so happy he let jake, Amelia and cookie and spend the rest of the night helping him deliver the presents. The End

i wake up earlier then everyone else it was 6:45 and, i go into my living room to find my mom and, dad sipping on hot fresh cups of coffee. i say, darn it i wanted to be the first one up. now all i have to do is wait until, my little sister wakes up. but insead of that i swing open her door and, scream WAKE UP ITS CHRISTMAS. after that we go down stairs to see what the fat guy, santa claus brought us. i run up to my gift. when i get there i see that i got the worst girt on the planet. a box of socks is what i got.what i really wanted was the newest black berry bold. i was like ok now i have to have a talk with that guy, because like really a box of socks. well thats all that went wrong because after that i got some pretty cool gifts. over all i had a great christmas spent with my family .and just remember that christmas is about spending time with, the people you love.

Odessa Public School Emily And The Horses Who Saved A Christmas It was December 20th, near Christmas. And only one more day of school! (After this one) The day was a Monday. Same ol’ Monday. It was a school day for Emily, a same bad school day. It might be better, knowing that this was the second last day of school until the holidays. This year, Emily was not liking school. It was a lot different then her time last year.

Emily awoke, moaning at the sound of school. Even the word made her head ache. ‘’fffffffffiiiiiivvvveee more minutes................?’’ She heaved. She closed her eyes again, letting her dream linger longer. In her dream a dazzling white mare stood before her.

The mare bowed for Emily, whinnied, and cantered off into the misty air. It was the most vibrant, and real dream, almost like a vision. dream Emily had ever had. Emily turned over to the side of her bed nearly falling off, and there in her bedroom stood the mare. A thought appeared in Emily’s head, like a message. ‘’Hello Emily.

My name is Bella. I am from North of North. A world of magical horses.’’.

Emily bowed and nodded her head like she knew what was happening

at the moment. Bella lied down and looked at Emily then her back. Emily walked over to Bella, and asked ‘’You want me to get on?’’ Bella nodded. Emily rose onto Bella’s back, and almost instantly a tingling, magical, feeling melted into her. She was instantly relaxed, calmed, comforted, or what ever describes perfect. Bella and Emily galloped through the walls of the farm house and they bolted off into the moon-light.

They finally came to a stop, it must have been about a half an hour. ‘’We are joined through the wolrds’’ Bella sent into Emily’s head. ‘’Oh, uh....

OK. What do you mean?’’ Emily asked. ‘’You will see.’’ Bella replied.

Then Emily slowly fell asleep............... ............................

Emily awoke sensing that what had just happened was no dream. She woke up in a stall. It was quite clean for a ‘stall’, perhaps a magical horse’s stall. In the stall there was a calender. It had pictures of magical horses, Bella, Bello, Bellissa, Bellismo, Jewel, Fiona, Thunder, Nike, and many others. Emily assumed those first 3, Other

than Bella, Were Bella’s family. ‘’You assume right Emily. Bello is my husband, and Bellisa and Bellismo are my two foals.’’ Bella said suddenly popping up out of no-were. ‘’They sure are neat, all of them.’’ Emily replied.

She flipped through the calender to December, and then she realized.... It was December.......December 21! She had sleep for longer than she thought!

It was the last day of school until the holidays! She got up and looked out and over the door. She was in the royal stables. But......There was a portal in the middle of it.... And from it came a woman and a huge wolf.... Just the feeling of that made Emily shiver. Emily ducked down to make sure she did not see her, and she peeked through the crack. Bella busted in and stood directly in front of the stall Emily was in. ‘’So I see Bella, You seem to have a precious treasure behind that door.’’

Ivenna (the ugly woman) said. Bella looked at Emily and then the window.

Emily under-stood exactly, She slunk out the window, and closed the blinds behind her....She looked down.....

She did not realize how big the hill was from farther away, but now she

knew...how big it really was. She cried for help, but no-one nor’ nothing came. But then in a flashing of lights, a opening appeared in the sky...

A shape appeared, in the shape of a horse, down came a silvery white Pegasus stallion, with a Santa hat on. He dashed to Emily and stood in mid air, while she got the hang of getting on.

Then he danced off with Emily clinging on to his ebony mane. The clouds opened once again, and they danced, and pranced, and merrily sang out ‘’Merry early Christmas! And a good last day of school!’’

And wait! Were do you think you’re going! The story is not over yet!

After that, Emily and Wings (the Pegasus who saved Emily), then after delivered all the preasents to all th boys and girls who deserved it.

And yes, as you guessed....

They lived happily ever after....

The End. Or maybe the beggining...

At the three hundredth house he was delivering to a girl named Ann Cishie But somehow feel off the stone roof and it really hurt old St. Nick’s tushie At the final house he found a picture of him up in his sleigh Santa laughed and smiled, then quietly whispered this just made his day It wasn’t St. Nick’s favourtie day But he flew back safely in his sleigh

Mother Teresa Catholic School The Kidnapping of Claus On December 23rd, early in the morning as Santa was going to the barn to feed the reindeer he heard a stomping sound coming from behind. It was the Grinch and with an evil smile he threw a bag over Santa and disappeared with santa in the bag leaving behind a note. The note said “I have stolen Santa. There will be no Christmas for all the world!!”

A boy named Logan found the note and he wanted to help find Santa. He found the elves and they said the Grinch had stolen Santa and were too scared to rescue him. The elves told Logan to take one of Santa’s reindeer and go rescue him. So Logan said “okay” and off he went.

But the Grinch was very smart and was watching out for someone to rescue Santa.

Logan tracked the Grinch to Mount Everest where the Grinch lived. Logan got into the Grinch’s cold, damp and dark lair. The Grinch saw Logan and feared the human boy. Logan bravely chased the Grinch, The Grinch tripped on a Rock and fell off a deep cliff and was Never seen again. Logan searched for Santa. He saw a bag.

It was shivering. Logan saw the tip of santa’s red hat. He ran to it and opened the bag. Santa was unharmed and thankful that Logan found him just intime to save Christmas.

They dashed back to the North pole where the elves had santa’s sled loaded. to thank Logan, Santa took him to help deliver the toys to the world.

So she asked Santa to bring her one. But he didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t bring her one instead.... Santa flew her to the north pole on his sleigh with all the reindeer pulling her. Santa got her a little elf suit. But, Zoe was not happy. She was planning on spending Christmas with her family. And she knew her family was going to have a Christmas pudding and light it on fire. But Santa had an idea. He took her home. And every year she gets a new outfit that she loves!
