EMC News – Family, friends and fellow North Grenville Fire Service (NGFS) members came out Monday evening to support nine recruits as they were officially welcomed into the department. The NGFS held its firstever graduation ceremony for recruits during the regular meeting of North Grenville council. Receiving certificates were: Geoff LeGoueff, a recent graduate of Algonquin College’s Pre-Fire Service Program; certified fire alarm technician Terry Heslop; Mike Finley, who works in the Municipality of North Grenville’s engineering department; flight paramedic Sean Teed; business owner Derek Kingsley, who has six years of firefighting experience. Other graduating recruits included: senior environmental field technician Trevor Saunders; Canadian Border Guard Service’s Mark McFalls, who also has six years of firefighting experience; avionic supervisor with Transport Canada, Peter Kirby; and Jason Martin, automotive technician and small business owner. Members of council and municipal staff congratulated the new NGFS members and mayor David Gordon presented their graduation certificates.

Emcee for the festivities, fire chief Paul Hutt, indicated that the majority of fire departments in Ontario employ volunteer fire service personnel “which accounts for approximately 64 per cent of all firefighters in Ontario.” Times have changed from the days training to be a volunteer firefighter was optional and Hutt noted the rules are stricter in order to meet Occupational Health and Safety regulations and the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Curriculum. “Fire departments must ensure that staff are properly trained and equipped to satisfy these requirements,” he stated. “The North Grenville Fire Service developed a comprehensive recruitment program that adheres to the various rules and regulations.” That recruitment program includes 120 hours of essential firefighting training and new members must obtain a DZ licence and complete 40 hours of driving within their first year of hire. The nine recruits that graduated Monday evening are now skilled in the areas of medical emergencies, motor vehicle accidents and extrication, structure fires, and grass and wild land fires. Hutt was pleased to be welcoming the graduates into the NGFS fold. “The residents of North Grenville are very

lucky to have such caring and skilled professionals serving their community,” he remarked. “I’m privileged to be before council to celebrate the successful completion of the North Grenville Fire Service 2011/2012 recruit class.” “...The North Grenville Fire Service and the residents of North Grenville benefit from the day to day skills that these members bring to the department,” Hutt added. Long service awards Following the presentation of certificates to the new graduates, Hutt also took the opportunity to honour two firefighters who have served the NGFS for many years: Dan Gordon, a firefighter for 37 years and Bill Kinnear, who has achieved 40 years of service. Hutt noted that the Exemplary Service Medal is given by the federal government to a fire service member who has given 20 years of service; while the Long Service Medal is issued by the provincial government to a fire service member who has given 25 years. A cross is added to the service bar on the medal for every five years thereafter. To conclude the ceremony, a musical slideshow of photos was presented highlighting the different training activities the recruits endured to achieve their certificates.
