EMC News - Tweed - The Tweed Horticultural Society held their first plant sale of the season at the Tweed Park May 18. Joan Morton, society president, expressed her gratitude to three anonymous contributors who made the plant sale a success. “We want to thank those who contributed; we had one lady in town who had a flower bed she wanted dug up and so we only dug up part of it and donated the plants to our sale. We had another women in Stirling who was renovating the outside of her house and we dug up her plants and saved them for the sale as well and we had another lady all the way from Peterborough who was moving and contacted about her flowers and she brought them to us. Our members also donate a lot of the plants. Joan went on to say the money they raise from the plant sales goes toward looking after all of the flower beds from the south end of Tweed at the sign to the north end sign. “We work hand-in-hand with the Village of Tweed and this year we will be doing a major project at the Victoria Parkette which is located across from Home Hardware on Victoria Street. The village has had to cut down a number of trees because they were too big so we will be planting new flower beds. The town puts that up and we just give them our input. Next week we will be planting all our annuals and adding colour to all the Tweed flower beds. We try to co-ordinate with the village colours in their hanging baskets and we will also be doing an Elvis theme with our planting this year to help promote the Elvis Festival. Joan added that last year the Horticultural society had 72 members which she was a very high number. Asked about membership, Joan said people can join as individuals or purchase family memberships. “We really want to involve children. This fall we are having a pumpkin-carving expert who sculpts pumpkins visit and we have three members who will be growing pumpkins for this purpose. We will also be co-ordinating with the library this summer to do seed pictures. It involves children creating art by gluing different shaped seeds onto paper. We want to encourage a hands-on environment for kids. Joan said the next major event for the Horticultural Society is the Flowerama Sale on July 1 where they will sell all types of plants. Internet bullying results in an increase in calls for service at CHSS By Judy Backus

EMC News - Madoc - In the absence of Staff Sergeant Peter Valiquette, Community Services Officer Alana Deubel was the detachment representative during a May 15 Community Policing Advisory Committee meeting attended by representatives of the municipalities within the detachment area. Deubel pointed to a number of statistics included in the regular report, which indicated that at the end of the fiscal year, both the categories of overtime allotment, and those for other daily operating expenses, had come in under budget. With regard to the usual foot patrol hours at the local secondary school, Deubel mentioned that those numbers were up, saying there had been an increase in the calls for service at the school, relating in particular to incidents of Internet bullying, and disputes on FaceBook and Twitter.

She indicated that with the arrival of spring the general foot patrol hours within the detachment area would be increasing. The crime report, made available to committee members, included mention of a number of reported break and enters since the beginning of the year, some relating to a trailer home at Crystal Beach Resort in Madoc Township. Deubel introduced Detective Constable Brad Croghan, the Community Drug Action Team officer, then went on to read an overview of the work he does. “He continues to work on a number of initiatives with the provincial drug enforcements section, executing drug-related search warrants in the Central Hastings detachment area and making a significant impact on the local drug culture. One such investigation last March at a McGill Street residence in Marmora, resulted in arrests

and the seizure of “cocaine, marijuana and oxycodone as well as a sum of Canadian currency. The release went on to state that the street value of the drugs was over $9,000. Croghan told committee members that jewellery had also been seized during the arrests. Prior to the meeting, Deubel had prepared a written request for CPAC, asking that the committee fund her attendance at a Compassion Fatigue Solutions seminar being held on June 4 and 5 in Kingston at a cost of $400. Background information from the company web site stated, “Compassion Fatigue refers to the profound emotional and physical exhaustion that helping professionals and caregivers can develop over the course of their career.
