EMC News - Belleville Two youngsters from Harry J Clarke know what the true spirit of Christmas is. Addy Hutchison and Paige Brown watched the devastating blaze at 20 Herman Street in Belleville several weeks ago. “The fire was huge; I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Hutchison. When the pair got to school, they told their Grade 6 class at Harry J Clarke Elementary School about what they had witnessed and were determined to do something to help. They asked their class to help them help a neighbour in need. “We are so blessed with so much; it’s right around the holidays and we know our holidays are going to be pretty good and their house just burnt down and it is

kind of hard to replace all that,” said Hutchison. “We wanted to do something to help, especially this close to Christmas,” added Brown. So the pair explained that each student was asked to bring in a small donation if they could; the grand total after a week was $223.92.

Martin More, the owner of the house on Herman Street, who escaped injury by climbing out a window when his dog alerted him to the danger, was on hand Wednesday to receive the donation from the two girls. “I was honestly speechless; I come from a big city

so to hear that two girls that are in Grade Six had done something of this magnitude was very overwhelming. It just shows you that living and being in a small community how people pull together when faced with adversity,” said More. After receiving the

cheque, More spoke a few words of thanks to the girls. “When you do good things it ends up coming back to you and you didn’t do this for any reason but out of the kindness of your hearts so I just want to say thank you from me and my son,” stated More.

and six adult staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. He then committed suicide. The organizers behind the sombre vigil were Quinte Broadcasting’s Scotty Lalonde and Tim Durkin, who after hearing the terrible news of the tragic shootings decided something positive could be done to show sup-

port. Lalonde said the idea was spawned after receiving an email the day after the tragedy from a local woman saying that she needed to do something, a sentiment Lalonde agreed with. “It was all I could think about. I needed to do something about this for this community,” he said. When asked about the

distance between the communities and why it was important Lalonde stated simply that “by the end of the day we are all the same, we all bleed red.” Some 200 people gathered in Market Square with candles, quietly listening as the names of the victims were read; tears streamed down many faces.
