EMC News - Belleville Fixed Fur Life keeps producing bigger Fur Balls every year. We’re talking, of course, about the annual gala that is the single largest indoor fund raiser each year, for the local charitable organization that spays and neuters stray pets in the region. Darlene Quinsey, president of Fixed Fur Life and the organization’s founder, said the sixth annual Fur Ball at the Banquet Centre in Belleville marks another gradual increase in growth for the organization. “This is an improvement over last year’s event; there are more people here,” she said. Last year the annual ball, involving dinner, dancing,
silent auction and a chance to rub elbows with fellow animal lovers for their ultimate benefit, saw just over 200 people attend. “This year we have about
230 people, so that’s about the constant gradual increase that we have had for the organization over the years,” noted Quinsey who also agreed with a laugh,
“It’s the largest Fur Ball yet.” Last year the event generated over $25,000 and this year Quinsey said she hoped to garner at least that
from the evening. That will translate in roughly 200 dogs or cats being spayed or neutered. She said the event is about Please see “Fixed” on page 3
Evening Parade will illuminate city By Michael J Brethour
EMC Events - Belleville Santa Claus is coming to town. That’s right the annual night time Santa Claus parade organized by Belleville and District Chamber of Commerce is once again returning to the friendly city. Susan Walsh, special event co-ordinator with the Belleville and District Chamber of Commerce, said the parade has a rough increase of 15
new entries this year. “They have either seen the parade themselves or they have heard from people that have been in it … we’re taking that as a compliment of how the parade has grown over the years,” said Walsh. She said two notable new entries are Mr. Peanut, the mascot of Planters Peanuts out of Toronto, and the Blades of Glory medieval theme group from the Campbellford area.
She said 68 entries are expected for this year’s parade slotted for Sunday, November 18. The pre-parade at King George Square kicks off at 4:30 p.m. with the actual parade starting at 5 p.m. As was the case last year, Gleaners Food bank collection and the Canada Post carriers, who will be collecting letters for Santa, will be leaving a bit earlier from the starting point. “In the past our pre-parade
has left at 4:45 p.m., fifteen minutes before the main parade, because of the time it takes for the collections,” she said. New this year is a contest run by the Quinte Mall, where four families will get a chance to Ride With Santa. “Four families will get a chance to ride in a limo from the Quinte Mall to the parade starting grounds and they will get a chance to ride on Please see “Recognition” on page 3
