EMC News - Belleville The wheels keep on rolling, with or without donations, but every bit helps. The annual Wheels of Hope program funded by the Canadian Cancer Society is perhaps one of the most important programs to cancer survivors explained Sue Rollins, fund-raising co-ordinator for the Canadian Cancer Society, Hastings-Prince Edward County Unit, in Belleville. Rollins noted this during the launch of the Wheels For Hope campaign at Kindness Court in the Quinte Mall on Wednesday morning. Rollins explained that the Wheels of Hope is the fundraising initiative that runs from September 5 until December 23. “The funds we raise during that period of time go to support our local transportation program for clients to go back and forth to their cancer treatment appointments,” explained Rollins. She said a little over 1,200 people use the service locally to transport patients to the closest cancer treatment clinic in Kingston. “It’s a pretty vital and critical service that we provide to them; in some cases they may not be able to get to their treatments by themselves,” she said. The program is now in its fourth year; last year the campaign generated over $68,000 to offset the cost of the program. Rollins said this year the fund-raising goal for the program is set at $72,000. But those figures do not encompass the cost of the entire program. Rollins reported it rang in at $180,000 to run. Please see “Volunteer” on page 3

EMC News - Belleville Zoning for a casino may be the only involvement for Belleville council for any potential site, but it still took

up almost an hour of council’s time Monday as one of the sites turned down by council’s planning committee drew a challenger from development representative

John Halloran. The property is at the junction of Millennium Drive and Highway 62, adjacent to Highway 401. It drew petitions from a near-

by church plus a petition signed by dozens of residents in the area, although most were well outside the normal 400-foot radius for required planning notifica-

tion. Halloran asked that council defer adopting the planning report to allow input for modifications on what Please see “Zoning” on page 3
