Avery Mulvihill, 8, escapes through a field in a scene from the David Ridgen film Cicada. This is the first acting job for the young Arnpriorite, whose family says is taking the whole experience in stride. Ridgen, who calls Arnprior his hometown, has several Ottawa Valley locations in mind for the movie. There are opportunities to contribute to the award-winning filmmaker’s project. Nick Smith Centre will be affected by lack of agreement: Mayor Reid Patricia Leboeuf pleboeuf@metroland.com
News – Programs, hours and services at the Nick Smith Centre could be cut if a joint recreation and library agreement cannot be reached between Arnprior and McNab-Braeside, confirmed Mayor David Reid. “The Nick Smith Centre with two ice pads and a pool is really designed to facilitate more than just the Arnprior residents, said Reid. “It’s a fairly substantial complex, the costs of running
that, it warrants participation by our neighbours. The cost of running the facility takes the McNab-Braeside property taxes into account. “If we don’t have that obviously the finances are going to be impacted and as a result programs will be impacted, he added. “So I don’t want to speculate at what that might be, but that is the reality. There are going to be some fairly significant impacts to the town of Arnprior and people that use that facility. It could translate into the closure of
No MB support for JRC objectives News - While the joint recreation committee - formed to come up with funding proposals for shared services - hoped for formal support for its mission statement and goals and objectives from McNab-Braeside council, they’re not getting it. Council rejected a motion to support the items following a discussion at the July 2 meeting. Committee members were upset after discovering council had already decided funding will not be coming from the 2014 tax base. And that a survey was released asking who uses town facilities and is prepared to support them financially.
the pool or affect those who work there, the mayor admitted. “I certainly hope that doesn’t happen, but we will have to look at all aspects of that operation, he said. The McNab-Braeside Township has declared it would no longer help pay for the operation of the Nick Smith Centre through property taxes. Mayor Reid doesn’t know why there is even a roadblock to a long-term agreement between the municipalities. See SHOULD, Page 2
