RELAY FOR LIFE
EMC News – The Boston Marathon is a time of hope and triumph. Those ideals were rocked on April 15 as two bombs went off near the finish line at 2:50 p.m. with thousands of runners still on the course. Four local runners competed in the race: Terry Monette and Kevin Phillips from Almonte and Rodney Carriveau and James McGuire from Carleton Place. It has been reported that all runners from Canada escaped from the events uninjured but their memories from the experience are still fresh. Monette, a life-long Almonte resident, qualified for the marathon in Toronto in the fall of 2011, therefore he was unable to register for last year’s event and competed this year. He qualified with a time of 3:15 and finished the Boston Marathon with a net time of 3:25. He crossed the finish line at 1:31 p.m. Monette was grateful he was not around at the time of the explosions and has not really thought about the “what ifs” had he still been in the area. “I was on the train out of the city and someone on the train got a Facebook update
on their phone, that was the first I heard of it,” said Monette. “It was a bit surreal, you don’t expect things like that to happen and I feel badly for all of those who got hurt.” It was a different story for McGuire who completed the race with a time of 3:51 at 2:11 p.m. and was still in the finishing area when the bombs went off. McGuire had been looking forward to his first Boston Marathon after qualifying at Ottawa Race Weekend last spring with a time of 3:24. “For me personally (the time in Boston) was not my best,” said McGuire. “The day wasn’t about a personal best, the big thing is to qualify for Boston. I was just looking forward to enjoying the day.” After McGuire crossed the finish line he was “funneled” through with the other athletes to a staging area where they all receive their medal, a drink, snack and a blanket, if needed. He was then moved over to the family meeting area one street over. McGuire, his wife Leah and their three-and-a-half year-old son Jack had travelled to Boston on April 12 and McGuire was trying to find them after the race when everything changed. Inhale some local creativity and inspiration at Art in the Attic By TARA GESNER tgesner@perfprint.ca
EMC Events – Celebrate art and community at the 2013 Art in the Attic show this weekend. Slated to run from April 26 to 28 at the Almonte Old Town Hall (AOTH), the event boasts a roster of established artists of different mediums as well as live entertainment provided by local musicians. The popular art show and
sale, in existence for 22 years, is the Almonte and Area Artists’ Association’s main affair of the year. Admission is free for visitors, and a percentage of sales go to the Almonte General Hospital. This year’s special guest artist is Kevin Dodds of Arnprior. He will be revealing several of his new original paintings. An acclaimed artist and teacher, Dodds’ work has appeared in many exhibitions, galleries and
museums worldwide. Back by popular demand, the senior art students from Almonte District High School will have an exhibit on display to help encourage young artists in the community. The Art in the Attic extravaganza kicks off Friday with the invite-only VIP soirée from 7 to 9 p.m. Doors open Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Established in 1991, the
mandate of the Almonte and Area Artists’ Association (not-for-profit) is to encourage artists of all ages to continue to grow and expand their knowledge and enjoyment of the visual arts, and to provide them with a venue in which to display their creativity to the public. Members receive monthly newsletters, talks by guest speakers, and the opportunity to participate in the Art in the Attic show. New members are always welcome.
