EMC Events – Celebrate the rich history of the Rideau Canal this weekend (July 30, 31 and Aug. 1) with the Merrickville Lions Club’s annual Canalfest in the village’s picturesque Blockhouse Park. A staple of the August Civic Holiday weekend, this year’s Canalfest promises to be fun for the entire family, including live entertainment, a silent auction, children’s activities, craft show and sale, as well as voyageur canoe races. Once again as part of this year’s children’s activities will be the popular Kids Loonie Fishing Derby beginning Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. Face painting will also take place Saturday and Sunday afternoon. “Enjoy some eco-fun with Andrea ‘The Bug Lady’ Howard throughout the weekend. Whether they are ‘big on bugs’ or not, kids – and grown-ups too – are sure to enjoy The Bug Lady and her Museum in a Suitcase,” remarked Lions Club member Chris Balicki in an email. The Rideau Canal History Hunt will enrich kids and their families on Sunday afternoon, allowing them to learn about local history and win some fun prizes as well. Plenty of emphasis has been put on the live entertainment lineup for this year’s Canalfest. In addition to a performance Friday evening at the Goose & Gridiron, the New Orleans Jazz Band will take to the festival stage Saturday afternoon. On Sunday, Maritime band Kitchen Party will have the crowds hopping with their catchy Celtic tunes and on Monday, Steve Lund and his popular Mumbo Jumbo Voodoo Combo and their Cajun-blues blend will entertain.

tors were invited to hear more about the plans to renovate the skateboard park, which the municipality is undertaking with the help of the TVO television program ‘Giver.’ The 13-part ‘Extreme Makeover’ style show is currently filming across Ontario and is being produced by Sinking Ship Entertainment. Filming is expected to take place during the last week of August here, with each project taking approximately three days.
North Grenville won’t just get a new state-of-the-art 3,000 square foot skateboard park out of the partnership, but ‘Giver’ will be doing two projects and filming two shows in the community, the second to create a fitness trail in South Gower Park. The full cost of the project is estimated at $150,000, though TVO has committed $10,000 and the municipality has $93,000 ($53,000 which was already in the budget to
pour concrete for the park this year and the rest is savings from other parks and recreation projects). To make up the shortfall, the municipality is looking for donations of materials, labour or funds in order to complete the job. And by the end of the breakfast, many businesses had stepped up to the plate. “…The TVO program coordinator may be coming to See PARK page K7
