They wanted their wedding to be full of simple yet beautiful details; inspired by her and her husband’s distinct heritages. It was described as a large Italian dinner with Southern flare. The reception was distinguished by its wooden farm tables and chairs decorated with bouquets set in mason jars by Flowers by Gary. The couple had three different sets of pies from Southern Gold Leaf Cakes instead of the traditional wedding cake. The evening came to a close as everyone lined the sunset driveway waving homemade flags before being escorted back to their cars by A Formal Affair.

They loved the industrial look of the renovated cotton mill. Ashley from Social Conceptions was their wedding coordinator and ensured all of the day’s details were carried out beautifully. Although their outdoor ceremony plans were rained out, the indoor ceremony was a perfect backup plan. They were married at the bottom of the staircases surrounded by their family and friends. Plants and Answers created the most beautiful floral arrangements. Sam’s culture was highlighted through the Sofreh Aghd, a tradition of Persian weddings which was an arrangement of symbolic items placed near the altar. To end the night, they were picked up by O. Henry Hotel’s London Taxi.

WEDDING PLANNER DAY-OF COORDINATOR

Which is Right for You?

by Susan Southerland

Couples ask me all the time whether or not they should hire a wedding planner/ coordinator. This is a decision that should be guided by wedding scope and budget, but what I can say is that I have never spoken to a bride or groom who regretted their decision to hire a planner/coordinator. Most agree that their planner helped them save money and relax on their wedding day. Concern typically comes in when the question of budgeting for the planner comes up (Visionary/Bewildered Brides), or if the couple fears that they will lose control of the planning process (Savvy/Functional Brides). The good news is, planners/coordinators come in many different price ranges, and he or she can work with you for various amounts of time. You’ll have little trouble finding someone who meets your specific needs and budget.

Hire a Full-Service Planner if:

• You are unsure about how to plan a budget for your wedding. • You have a busy job that will make finding time to plan your wedding challenging. • You are insecure about interviewing, negotiating contracts with, and hiring wedding vendors.

Hire a Day-Of Planner if:

• You like the idea of organizing every aspect of the wedding, including budgeting, creating a look, negotiating, interviewing and hiring. • You have people in your life who will help you with the day-to-day tasks of planning a wedding.

BRIDAL SHOPPING :

Wedding Gowns

FOR HARD TO FIT SIZES By Susan Southerland

Jenny Packham, Spring 2015

Finding a wedding gown should be a fun and exciting experience. For brides who are either smaller or larger than the samples carried in gown salons, however, the experience can be downright frustrating. Here are some tips to find the perfect gown when you aren’t the perfect size: Find a salon that has your size in stock. Make a few calls before venturing out to try on wedding gowns. If you find a salon that has your size in stock, you will get to enjoy the “trying on” experience. Work with a knowledgeable salesperson. An experienced gown salesperson will know what type of gown will fit your shape and height. Find someone you trust and let her make suggestions. You may see something that she suggests on a hanger that makes you crinkle your nose, but once you put it on…magic! What you wear under your gown is as important as the gown itself. Before you start trying on wedding gowns, find good shape wear. Go to someone who knows how to fit bras and corsets so they fit properly. Don‘t feel pressured to purchase the latest trends. Buy a gown that makes you feel confident and beautiful. Don’t let six-foot, 115-pound models dictate what you wear.

FINE PRINT:

Reading Vendor Contracts By: Susan Southerland

Reading and understanding your vendors’ contracts is critical to the success of your wedding. You don’t want to experience the aggravation of feeling cheated because you didn’t read the fine print. Here are some items you must make sure are in every one of your vendor contracts.

1. Correct date, time, and location of the wedding. If you’re having your wedding on a day other than Saturday, be sure to put the day in the contract. I find that many wedding professionals assume that the wedding day is Saturday. Mentioning the proper day in the contract will help ensure the vendor shows up. 2. Contact information for the vendor on the wedding day. Your wedding vendors will not be in their offices on the wedding day. Make sure you have a way of contacting them on the big day in case of changes like moving the ceremony due to inclement weather, or finding him or her if he or she is running behind. 3. All fees (including overtime pricing). Don’t be surprised by any hidden fees. Some couples can be surprised by the cost of service charges levied by caterers and reception sites, for example. Also, if you negotiate your overtime fees with the photographer, videographer, band, and reception site in advance, then you will already know the costs involved if you’re having a great time and you decide to extend the party. That way, you won’t have to negotiate on the wedding day. {Did you know that under certain circumstances, you might have to pay for electricity at your reception site? If you are hiring a band, need extra lighting, or even have special food stations, you may incur extra fees. If so, You’ll need to negotiate them into your contract.} 4. Methods of payment accepted. Some wedding vendors don’t take credit cards and others don’t take checks on the wedding day. You don’t want to have to run to the bank to get a cashier’s check at the last minute.

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR

WEDDING COLOR SCHEME By: Susan Southerland

Depending on your planning personality, you may be excited about choosing your wedding color scheme . . . or positively terriďŹ ed. If you are a Functional or Bewildered personality, fear not. These next tips will help making your color scheme choices a little bit easier. You may actually enjoy it! You Savvy and Visionary brides might get some helpful tips, too. {Want to know your bridal personality?} Visit http://success.perfectweddingguide.com/free-wedding-planning-ebooks to download our bridal personality eBooks!

You can get inspiration for your color scheme in so many places. For example, do you have a favorite outfit? What does the décor in your house look like? These are two good places to start.

If that doesn’t work for you, try shopping around in a home décor store. You can find your ideal color scheme sitting right on the shelves. Look at pillows, dishes, area rugs, and linens to get some ideas.

If you want to try to make your own creation, use a color wheel or visit websites with color schemes. Pantone always chooses a selection of “in” colors, as well as a color of the year. The website gives great suggestions on how to blend the colors to make something wonderful.

WEDDING PLANNING:

ASKING THE TOUGH QUESTIONS BEFORE YOUR WEDDING DAY by Liesa Marie Williams

You are preparing for your amazing, exciting, one-of-a-kind wedding day by choosing the perfect gown, the perfect florist, photographer, venue, caterer, etc. But planning for the day after your wedding, the day after that and so on is essential for the success of your relationship and marriage. Some questions you should ask your mate well in advance to your wedding day include: • Do you pay your bills on time? • Do you have a good credit standing? • Do you have healthy relationships with your parents? • What are your greatest hopes and greatest fears? • What are your spiritual beliefs? . . . just to name a few. Be fully prepared in knowing exactly who you are, who your mate is and what you are looking for in a fulfilling (satisfying, rewarding) healthy (strong, hearty, spirited), productive (creative, fruitful, helpful) & lifelong (enduring, everlasting, permanent) relationship. So let’s get started with a fundamental task in finely developing your relationship…

IDEAS FOR TRADITIONAL

★

CEREMONY MUSIC ★

Choosing traditional music for your walk down the aisle is becoming less of a traditional choice. Many brides today are swapping familiar wedding songs for radio-friendly favorites or their own personal preferences.

Individuality matters, but have you thought about how it might conflict with your venue, personal style, or guest’s tastes? Recognize when to use your favorite tunes and when to stick with the classics. Music sets the vibe of your wedding from the start. You have the power to alter your guests’ mood with the musical genre. Imagine you’re getting married in a formal or glamorous setting - a ballroom, church, art museum or symphony hall you may want to play up the opulence of the surroundings by selecting classic pieces. If your two families have conflicting musical tastes, familiar love songs and wedding marches make a happy compromise. You can unite the two families later, with your DJ’s help, by blending genres during the reception. The same goes for brides with large guest lists. Traditional choices charm everyone by appealing to their sentimental side. Consider your venue. Traditional music generally works anywhere, but especially in places of worship, in very large, ornately decorated spaces, and anywhere you’d like to create a soothing scene for your wedding ceremony.

Photography by Lyndsey

The following musical selections are for brides who need to satisfy finicky friends and family or for those who envision a beautiful evening ceremony.

PRELUDE

The prelude is the half hour of music played while people are gathering for the ceremony. Choose classical music to create a reverent mood: “Prelude in C” (J.S. Bach) “Ave Maria” (F. Schubert) “Clair de Lune” (C. Debussy) “Gymnopedie” (A.E.L. Satie) “La primavera” and “L’inverno” from the Four Seasons (A.Vivaldi)

SEATING OF FAMILY

The ceremony begins with the seating of special guests and grandparents, followed by the seating of the mothers. The finest selections for this moment are: “Arioso” (J.S. Bach) “Allegro Maestoso” from Water Music (G.F. Handel) “Meditation from Tais” (J. Massenet)

PROCESSIONAL

As this music begins, the pastor and the groom usually proceed to the front and bridesmaids begin their procession down the aisle. Some traditional choices for the processional are: “Trumpet Voluntary” (J. Clark) “Trumpet Tune” (H. Purcell) “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” (J.S. Bach) “March” from Occasional Oratorio (G.F. Handel)

BRIDE’S ENTRANCE

It’s time for the grand entrance! Familiar songs that stir your guests to stand and await your appearance are: “Canon in D” (J. Pachelbel) “The Bridal Chorus” from Lohengrin (R. Wagner) “Allegro Maestoso” from Water Music (G.F. Handel) “Rondeau” (J.J. Mouret)

SPECIAL/INTERIM MUSIC Your musician or DJ will ask you to choose songs for the special moments in your wedding ceremony (e.g., the lighting of the unity candle or a sacred solo after the prayer). Two exceptional pieces for this time are “The Lord’s Prayer” by A. Malotte, or “The Prayer”, as sungg by Celine Dion and Andre Bocelli. “O Perfect Love” by J. Barnby is another good choice. Stick to two musical arrangements or your ceremony may run long.

RECESSIONAL

At this point, you’re beaming with total joy after marrying your partner! Consider these exuberant pieces for a grand exit: “The Wedding March” from A Midsummer Night’s Dream (F. Mendelssohn) “Ode to Joy” (L. Beethoven) Choosing traditional or classical music doesn’t require you to limit your search h to one genre or musical style. Choose music that best reflects the tone and feel of your day. If don’t consider yourself a traditional bride, think about hiring classical musicians that play instrumentals of popular songs or having your DJ transition classical selections to more modern weddings songs at the reception.
