Big Pilot’s Watch Edition “Le Petite Prince”.

El tiempo transcurre sin prisa pero sin pausa.

Como prescriptores de relojería sabemos cómo contabilizarlo, pero a veces da la sensación que avanza más rápido de lo que marcan las agujas.

Sin tiempo para mirar atrás y que nos entre la melancolía, llegamos ya a los 130 años de historia. A lo largo de todo este recorrido ha habido etapas de lo más diversas y las circunstancias políticas, sociales, culturales y tecnológicas han ido cambiando. Nuestro modo de trabajar, con pasión por el oficio y apostando siempre por la calidad y el trato cercano nos, ha llevado a dar muchos pasos adelante. Este año hemos dado uno muy importante con la apertura de la nueva tienda de Alicante. Este es el primer proyecto fuera de la provincia de Girona, que afrontamos con ilusión y ganas de ilusionar. Nuestra revista, la PQ1887, llegará también por primera vez a un nuevo territorio. En este cuarto volumen hemos querido seguir mostrando todas las novedades, tanto en relojería como en joyería, de las mejores marcas del mundo, a las que representamos con orgullo. Hemos entrevistado personalmente a uno de los diseñadores y creadores de las joyas italianas con más presente y futuro, Marco Bicego. Mariona Quera nos hablará también de una de las gemas más apreciadas, la esmeralda. Nuestro jefe de relojería nos explicará una complicación relojera, y el jefe del taller de joyería nos enseñará como elabora manualmente una joya. Como en cada volumen, hablaremos de un destino relacionado con nuestro mundo y, como no puede ser de otro modo, les mostraremos la incursión de las nuevas tecnologías en la relojería tradicional suiza.

Esperamos que disfruten de esta cuarta edición de la PQ1887 y que compartan con nosotros la ilusión de este maravilloso universo.

Time passes slowly but surely. As opinion leaders in watchmaking, we know how to quantify it, but it sometimes gives us the feeling that it is advancing faster that the clock. With no time to look back or lapse into melancholy, we have now reached 130 years of history. Throughout this long journey there have been periods of great diversity and the political, social, cultural and technological circumstances have been changing progressively. Our way of working, with passion for the profession, always committed to quality and friendly service, has led us to take many steps forward. This year we have taken a very important one with the opening of the new shop in Alicante. This is our first project outside the province of Girona and we are treating it with enthusiasm and the desire to enthuse. Our journal, PQ1887, will also enter new territory for the first time. In this fourth volume we have aimed to continue showing all the innovations of the best brands in the world, who we proudly represent.

We have personally interviewed one of the top designers and creators of Italian jewellery of the present day and the future, Marco Bicego. Mariona Quera will also tell us about one of the most prized gems, the emerald. Our head of watchmaking will talk about a watch complication, and the head of the jewellerymaking workshop will show us how to make a piece of jewellery by hand. As in every volume, we will talk about a destination related to our profession and, inevitably, we will show you how the new technologies are making inroads into traditional Swiss watchmaking.

We hope you will enjoy this fourth edition of PQ1887 and share with us our enthusiasm for this wonderful craft.

Hace ya 130 años que un argentero de 65 años de la pequeña villa ampurdanesa de Terrades y de nombre Pere Quera Oliveras decidió comprar un edificio en la calle de la Argenteria de Girona y montar un negocio de reparaciones y producción de joyas de oro y de plata. La ubicación de la tienda no era casual, ya que, a finales del siglo XIX, en Girona todavía muchos de los negocios estaban agrupados por gremios, así que se instalaron en la calle de los argenteros.

Con toda la ilusión del mundo arrancó un negocio que a los pocos años traspasaría a su hijo Pere Quera Bosch.

30 years have now gone by since a 65-yearold silversmith from the Empordà village of Terrades by the name of Pere Quera Oliveras decided to but a building at Calle Argentera in Girona and set up a gold and silver jewellery repair and production business. The shop’s location did not come about by chance as in late19th-century Girona many if the businesses were still grouped by profession, so they set up in the street of silversmiths. With boundless enthusiasm he started up a business that a few years later was passed on to his son Pere Quera Bosch.

Con empeño, esfuerzo y dedicación, la segunda generación de los Quera fue haciéndose un nombre en la ciudad, y su talante atento y afable les hizo ganarse una clientela sólida y fija. Su prioridad era diferenciarse del resto ofreciendo un servicio de máxima calidad y un trato cercano a sus clientes, por eso se implicó activamente en la vida de la calle y de una ciudad que a principios del s. XX estaba en pleno crecimiento.

With commitment, effort and dedication, the second generation of the Quera family progressively made a name for themselves in Girona and their courteous and friendly disposition earned them a solid and loyal clientele.

Their priority was to stand out from the others by offering their customers a top-quality service and close attention. Therefore they became actively involved in the life of the street and of a city which in the early 20th century was in full growth.

Pere Quera Bosch, y posteriormente su hijo Josep Quera, intentaron dar aires de modernidad al establecimiento. Introdujeron la relojería y fueron haciendo crecer el negocio con sensibilidad. Las primeras imágenes que se han conservado de la joyería de la calle Argenteria de Girona datan de principios de los años 30 y demuestran los toques modernistas de la fachada del establecimiento, con un aparador con una amplia selección de piezas de orfebrería de plata, joyas y relojes.

Pere Quera Bosch, and later his son Josep Quera, strove to give the establishment a modern feel. They introduced watches to their range and made the business grow with sensitivity. The first images that have been preserved of the jewellery shop at Calle Argentera in Girona date back to the early 1930s and demonstrate the Modernist touches of the establishment’s front with a display containing a wide selection of silver metalwork, jewellery and watches.

Repasando la fototeca histórica de Pere Quera 1887, observamos el crecimiento del establecimiento y las evoluciones que ha ido experimentando a lo largo de los años. También son más que palpables los cambios históricos de la ciudad y las inclemencias meteorológicas que ha ido sufriendo, como las constantes inundaciones causadas por el desbordamiento del río Onyar que tan cerca está de la tienda.

Looking back at the photo history of Pere Quera 1887 shows the way the establishment grew and the changes it went through over the years. The historic changes of the city are also more than palpable, as are the adverse weather conditions it has undergone, such as the constant flooding produced by the overflowing of the River Onyar, very near the shop.

La cuarta generación de la dinastía la protagonizaron los hijos de Josep Quera: Pere y Emili Quera Güell. Con ellos al frente el negocio siguió creciendo y fueron adquiriendo las más prestigiosas marcas de relojería suiza. Estas grandes firmas combinaban a la perfección con la joyería de alta calidad que se producía desde el taller con los materiales más nobles.

The fourth generation of the dynasty was led by the sons of Josep Quera’s sons, Pere and Emili Quera Güell. With them at the helm, the business continued to grow and they progressively acquired the most prestigious brands of Swiss watchmaking. These great firms perfectly combined with the top-quality jewellerymaking produced in the workshop using the finest materials.

Durante los años 60 se produce un auge turístico en la Costa Brava y la cuarta generación de los Quera ve la oportunidad de ampliar sus fronteras y aumentar la presencia en el territorio. En pocos años se abrirían establecimientos en Platja d’Aro, Sant Feliu de Guíxols, Palamós, L’Estartit, L’Escala o Roses.

The 1960s saw a rise in tourism on the Costa Brava and the fourth generation of the Quera family spied an opportunity to broaden their frontiers and increase their presence in the region. In a few short years establishments were opened at Platja d’Aro, Sant Feliu de Guíxols, Palamós, L’Estartit, L’Escala and Roses.

En esta época, la joyería ya contaba con marcas como Patek Philippe, Rolex u Omega, el top de la relojería mundial. Acompañado de estas marcas, Pere Quera se sigue haciendo un nombre como uno de los puntos de venta más exclusivos y selectos de toda la demarcación.

By then the jewellers had taken on brands such as Patek Philippe, Rolex and Omega, the world leaders in watchmaking. In the company of these brands, Pere Quera continued to make its name as one of the most exclusive and select outlets in the entire region.

En 1974 se incorpora a la empresa el actual gerente, Pere Quera Serras, hijo de Pere Quera Güell. Con la tradición familiar en la sangre, la quinta generación se involucra en el negocio intentando transmitir siempre en primera persona los secretos, valores y calidades de su establecimiento.

The current head of the company, Pere Quera Serras, son of Pere Quera Güell, joined in 1974.

With the family tradition in their blood, the fifth generation involve themselves in the business by constantly striving to transmit the secrets, values and qualities of their establishment first hand.

En los años 80, y ya con un siglo de experiencia, los muros de la pequeña tienda de la calle Argenteria empiezan a ensancharse, adquiriendo los locales del lado y dando más espacio y visibilidad a los aparadores. También es una época donde se apuesta por dar al cliente un valor añadido fuera del establecimiento, con una gran vitalidad a la hora de organizar y participar en todo tipo de eventos culturales, gastronómicos, turísticos o deportivos.

In the 1980s, now backed by a century of experience, the wall of the small shop in Calle Argentera began to spread out with the acquisition of two neighbouring premises, giving the displays more space and visibility. This was also a period when a commitment was made to giving the customer added value outside the establishment with great vitality by organising and taking part in all types of cultural, gastronomic tourist or sporting events.

Con la entrada del siglo XXI se abre una nueva tienda en Figueres, en uno de los edificios más emblemáticos de la ciudad, a pocos metros del Museo Dalí.

The dawn of the 21st century saw the opening of a new shop in Figueres, in one of that city’s most emblematic buildings, a few metres from the Dalí Museum.

Mientras tanto, la tienda de Girona va adquiriendo cada vez más magnitud, y no solamente en metros de exposición y producto, sino también en servicio. En la primera planta, donde antiguamente vivieron las primeras generaciones de la familia Quera, se encuentra un servicio técnico de relojería con profesionales formados en las principales fábricas y manufacturas de las mejores marcas suizas y un taller de joyería que, además de reparar y restaurar piezas, dispone de un centro de diseño y creación de joyas.

Meanwhile, the Girona shop was expanding even more, not only in square metres of display and product, but also in service. On the ground floor, where the first generations of the Quera family had formerly lived, there is a watchmaking technical service with professionals trained at the main factories and manufactures of the top Swiss firms, and a watchmaking workshop that, in addition to repairing and restoring pieces, has a jewellery design and creation centre.

Los tres hijos de Pere Quera Serras y Ma Àngels Sans, una vez formados, se incorporan también al negocio familiar. La primera fue Mariona Quera, gemóloga, que coge el timón de la joyería. Su hermano mediano Pere hace lo propio con la relojería y posteriormente también se incorpora el hermano pequeño, Joan. Son la sexta generación de Quera al frente del establecimiento.

Once trained, the three children of Pere Quera Serras and Ma Àngels Sans also joined the family business. The first was gemmologist Mariona Quera, who took the helm of the jewellerymaking side, her second brother Pere does his thing with watchmaking and younger brother Joan also joined later. They are the sixth Quera generation at the head of the business.

Con nuevas visiones y nuevas perspectivas, Pere Quera 1887 abre en verano de 2016 su primera tienda fuera de la provincia de Girona. La ciudad elegida es Alicante. En un local de tres plantas en medio de la principal zona comercial de la ciudad, empieza un nuevo horizonte en el devenir de esta empresa familiar.

With new visions and new perspectives, in the summer of 2016 Pere Quera 1887 opened its first store outside the province of Girona. The chosen city was Alicante. In a premises of three storeys in the heart of the city’s business area, a new horizon is opening up in the evolution of this family business.

Son 130 años de historia, y es evidente que muchas cosas han cambiado, pero el amor de las seis generaciones por este oficio ha hecho que sus principales pilares sigan inalterables: atención cordial, cercana y personalizada, conocimiento del oficio, apuesta por la calidad, autoexigencia e ilusión son valores que perduran con el paso de los años.

It goes back 130 years and many things have obviously changed, but the love of the six generations for this profession have made their mainstays remain unalterable: courteous service - friendly and personal - knowledge of the profession, commitment to quality, self-demand and enthusiasm are values which endure over the years.

LA REPETICIÓN DE MINUTOS MINUTE REPEATERS

La mayoría de los relojeros consideran que los relojes con repetición de minutos son, con diferencia, la máxima complicación en relojería. Todo tiene que ser absolutamente perfecto para producir una sonería precisa y un sonido impoluto.

Una repetición es una complicación en un reloj mecánico que hace sonar las horas a petición del usuario mediante un pulsador o gatillo. Hablamos de repetición de minutos cuando en el reloj suenan las horas, los cuartos y los minutos utilizando diferentes timbres. Las horas se anuncian normalmente mediante un timbre grave, los cuartos con una secuencia de dos timbres, y los minutos mediante un timbre agudo.

Most watchmakers consider that watches with a minute repeater are, by far, the maximum complication in watchmaking. Everything needs to be absolutely perfect in order to produce an accurate striking mechanism and a pristine sound.

A repeater is a complication in a mechanical watch that makes the hours sound on the user’s request using a push-piece or a trigger. Minute repeaters in watches chime the hours, quarter hours and minutes using different tones. The hours are normally announced using a low tone, the quarter hours with a sequence of two tones and the minutes by means of a high tone.

It is considered one of the maximum complications produced in watchmaking.

Este tipo de complicación surgió antes de generalizarse el uso de la electricidad. Así pues, los relojes de repetición de minutos permitían saber la hora en la oscuridad y eran también muy útiles para personas con visión reducida.

A principios de los años sesenta, la tradición de fabricar repeticiones de minutos prácticamente había desaparecido. A pesar de ello, Philippe Stern, anterior presidente de Patek Philippe, decidió relanzar su producción para conmemorar el 150 aniversario de la compañía e incluirlo nuevamente en su colección de relojes de pulsera. El equipo de investigación y desarrollo de la marca desmontó relojes antiguos para analizar lo que se podía aprender del pasado. Para perfeccionar el sonido de estos relojes, se dedicaron años de investigación y desarrollo en colaboración con la Escuela Politécnica Federal de Lausana y la Escuela de Ingeniería de Ginebra, durante los cuales se investigaron diferentes aleaciones y se comprobaron meticulosamente las diferentes proporciones de los elementos con el objetivo de encontrar el metal híbrido idóneo para optimizar la calidad del sonido de los timbres. Una de las dificultades con que se encontraron fue que este oficio prácticamente había desaparecido. En la época de los años setenta no existían las pensiones de jubilación y los creadores de timbres consideraban que su experiencia y conocimientos metalúrgicos eran una especie de seguro que les permitiría seguir trabajando mientras pudieran continuar con su oficio. Por este motivo, no guardaban registros escritos de sus conocimientos. Durante su trabajo de investigación, la compañía reconstruyó y perfeccionó los conocimientos y las técnicas de la producción, acumulando una gran cantidad de información que de otro modo se habría perdido y que ahora quedará para la posteridad.

This type of complication emerged before the widespread use of electricity. Therefore minute repeater watches enabled users to tell the time in the dark and were also very useful for people with reduced visibility. By the early 1970s, the tradition of manufacturing minute repeaters had practically died out. Nevertheless, Philippe Stern, the former chairman of Patek Philippe, decided to re-launch its production to commemorate the company’s 150th anniversary and to include it once again in their watch collection.

The brand’s research and development team dismantled old watches to analyse what they could learn from the past. To perfect the sound of these watches, they dedicated years of research and development in collaboration with the Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne and the Geneva School of Engineering. During these years, various alloys were researched and the different proportions of the elements were meticulously checked with the aim of finding the ideal hybrid metal to enhance the quality of the sound of the tones. One of the difficulties they encountered was that this profession has practically died out. In the 1970s there were no retirement pensions and the creators of tones considered that their metallurgical experience and skills were a type of insurance that would permit them to continue working as long as they could continue in their profession. At the beginning of the year 2000, Patek Philippe created a new repeater mechanism that offered a different acoustic experience: the «cathedral» chime. The cathedral chime differs from traditional chimes due to its very stable vibration, a rich sound and an especially long reverberation.

Minute repetition is a complex, multidimensional acoustic puzzle, which can be affected by all sorts of variables. Building a minute repeater mechanism into a pocket watch requires incredible skill, and making it fit into a wristwatch is even more complicated, as the relatively small size of the case make it necessary to reduce the diminutive parts even more. A specialist watchmaker may need 200 to 300 hours’ work to assemble a minute repeater watch, and it can only be done after several decades of experience.

Every watch is unique and requires a perfect pairing of technological innovation and human contribution. ¿Cuándo decide usted iniciar la empresa? ¿Cuáles eran sus objetivos iniciales?

Soy la segunda generación de una familia de joyeros. Mi padre me transmitió su visión y su pasión por la joyería. Durante las vacaciones en mi época de estudiante solía pasarme largos ratos viéndolo trabajar. Yo estaba allí en su banco absorbiendo y aprendiendo todas sus habilidades.

Yo no estudié para ser diseñador de joyas, eso surgió de forma natural. Poco a poco empecé a dirigir la empresa y posteriormente en el año 2000 lancé la marca que lleva mi nombre.

When did you decide to launch the company?

What were your initial goals? l am the second generation from a family of jewellers. My father transferred all his visions and passions for jewellery to me. I would spend a lot of time during the holidays when l was still studying at school watching him work. l was there on the bench absorbing and learning all his skills. l didn’t study to be a jewellery designer - that came along naturally. Slowly l began to manage the company and then in 2000 l launched the brand under my name.

Do you remember your first design?

Who was it for?

It was a bracelet of coil, a first experiment of the collection that became my beloved Marrakech... and it was for Valentina, who became my beloved wife!

¿Cuáles son los principales retos de la marca a día de hoy?

A partir del lingote de oro que compro yo mismo, lo hacemos todo. Yo diseño y juntos producimos y distribuimos, tenemos línea directa. Hay que controlar los gastos, pero también queremos crear piezas de alta calidad. Todavía lo sigo haciendo todo bajo el mismo techo. Tenemos la oficina central que es donde trabajan todos los empleados. Todo el mundo trabaja allí bajo mi control. Estamos muy centrados en el apoyo que les damos a los distribuidores. Pienso que, para cualquier empresa, la mayor dificultad no reside en crear el mejor producto, sino que además hay que saber distribuirlo, entender las necesidades del consumidor y proporcionarle un servicio completo. Esto es lo que marca la diferencia.

What are the firm’s main challenges today?

From the bar of gold that l buy we do everything.

I design, we produce we distribute and we have the direct line. You need to control the expenses but you aIso can create high quality. I am still doing everything under one roof. We have the headquarters and the employees - everyone is there working, everything is controlled by me.

We are very focused on the support we are giving the retailers. The difficulty l think for every company is not just the best product, now you need to distribute and understand the needs ofthe consumer and give the support - provide the full service ¬ this makes the difference.

¿Ser una marca global y la artesanía pueden seguir unidos? ¡En mi caso tiene que ser así! Esto es lo que hace que mi marca sea única, igual que mis joyas. Solamente hay unas pocas compañías que pueden funcionar así porque la mayoría no fabrican, solo venden. En mi caso, vengo de este mundo, del lado de la producción. Mi corazón está con mis artesanos, son parte de la familia Marco Bicego. Creo que esto es un valor añadido para la empresa. ¿Cuál es el equilibrio perfecto entre innovación y atemporalidad?

Originalmente solía emplear las habilidades que mi padre me transmitió, pero con el tiempo he creado mi propia visión del mundo de la joyería.

He reinterpretado las técnicas y el acabado tradicionales de mi tierra, pero desde una perspectiva moderna. Hemos integrado formas orgánicas en nuestras joyas para que sean más fáciles de llevar, contemporáneas, versátiles y atemporales. ¿Qué no le puede faltar a una joya de Marco Bicego?

Que estén hechas por mis artesanos en el taller, dedicando la máxima atención a los detalles y el material. Esto es lo que todas mis joyas tienen en común. Si no, no son joyas Marco Bicego ¿Cómo se inspira y en qué piensa a la hora de crear una nueva pieza?

La naturaleza es algo de lo que obtengo mucha inspiración. Desde sus formas, que no suelen ser demasiado regulares, y por lo tanto son siempre únicas y diferentes entre sí, hasta sus materiales, siempre trato de respetarla y sacar el máximo partido de las gemas, el oro y los diamantes. Después viajo mucho, y eso me abre la mente a nuevas perspectivas y me ayuda a generar nuevas ideas.

El trenzado de las cadenas, el acabado matizado y las piedras de color han creado un icono. ¿Esto ayuda a diferenciarse del resto y crear un estilo propio?

Totalmente. Los detalles son el distintivo de mi marca. Por eso no me gusta hacer demasiados cambios, quiero que el concepto que subyace bajo la marca sea una constante y que siga reconocible a pesar de que siempre tratamos de evolucionar. Me encanta cuando la gente ve una pieza de joyería y es capaz de reconocerla como una joya Marco Bicego. Y esto se obtiene manteniendo una gran consistencia en los detalles.

Can being a global brand and craftsmanship still be combined?

In my case they have to! This is what makes my brand unique, my jewels unique. There are only a few companies that can show this because mostly don’t produce they just sell. For me, l came from that world, from the production side. My heart is with my artisans, this is part of the Marco Bicego family. l think it’s a plus of the company.

What is the perfect balance between innovation and timelessness?

I originally used the skills that my father transferred to me but l have created my own way of seeing the jewellery world. I re-interpreted the techniques and the finishing that belongs to the tradition of my territory, but with a modern interpretation. We have combined organic shapes in our jewellery to make it easy to wear, contemporary, versatile and timeless.

What is essential to a piece of Marco Bicego jewellery?

Being made by hand by my artisans in the headquarters, with the most careful attention to details and material. This is what my jewels have in common, without that they are not Marco Bicego jewels.

What inspires you and what do you think about when creating a new piece?

Nature is something I draw a lot of inspiration from. From its shapes, that are never too regular, and therefore always unique, different to one another...from its material, I always try to respect and make the best out of the gemstones, the gold and the diamonds. Then I travel a lot, and this opens your mind to new perspectives and helps ideas.

The braiding of the chains, the nuanced finish and the coloured stones have created an icon. Does this help you to stand out from the rest and create your own style?

Absolutely. Details are the trademarks of my brand. This is why l don’t like to change too much, l want to have the concept behind the brand to keep going and keep evolving but make it recognisable. l love when you see a piece of jewellery and you can recognise it as a Marco Bicego piece of jewellery. And this you obtain with strong consistency in the details.

¿Tiene competidor Italia en confección y diseño de joyas? ¿Se nota en sus joyas el “Made in Italy”?

Como ya dije, en la manera como diseñamos y creamos todas nuestras piezas bajo un mismo techo… no, no tenemos competencia. Y en diseño tampoco, es imposible recrear algo que ha sido elaborado a mano por un equipo de artesanos con una destreza inigualable.

Do you have any competition in Italy in producing and designing jewellery? Is “Made in Italy” notable in your jewellery?

Like I said in the way we design and create everything under one roof no, I don’t have competitors. And in the design neither, you can’t recreate what is made by hand by a team of craftsmen with unparalleled artistry.

¿Cuál es el comentario que nunca olvidará respecto a una de sus joyas?

Algunos clientes me han dicho que se sentían desnudos cuando no llevan mis joyas. Esto es el mejor cumplido para mí, significa que las joyas son parte de ellos mismos, de su personalidad, y que he logrado mi objetivo.

What comment on one of your pieces will you never forget?

Some of my clients told me they fell naked without my jewels, that’s the best compliment for me, it means my jewels are part of them, of their personality, and that I have reached my goal.

¿El lujo puede ser para todos los días?

Las joyas deben ser para todos los días. Si son de uso cotidiano, deben ser cómodas y fáciles de llevar. Cuando diseño una pieza de joyería tiene que ser bella, pero también tiene que ser lo que la mujer necesita, y eso también es muy importante para mí. Por eso hablo con nuestros clientes, me proporcionan mucha información que me permite seguir evolucionando la marca. ¿Encajan las joyas para hombres?

Tratamos de crear una línea de pulseras para hombres, pero lo cierto es que se requiere mucho tiempo para desarrollar un producto, así que mejor centrarse en lo que siempre hemos hecho, y tratar incluso de mejorarlo. ¿Cómo ve la marca de aquí 10 años?

Mi sueño sigue siendo el mismo que el primer día: ver la marca crecer y expandirse por todo el mundo como un ejemplo de belleza, diseño y exclusividad. También quiero que mi marca sea conocida por ser un buen ejemplo de fiabilidad, servicio y atención a sus clientes.

Can luxury be for every day?

Jewellery for me has to be everyday. If it is to be everyday then it has to be comfortable, easy to wear. When l design a piece of jewellery it has to be nice but it also has to be what the woman needs and that is also very important to me, l talk to our customers. They give me a lot of information, this is why l keep evolving the brand.

Does jewellery go well with men?

We tried with a line of bracelets for men, but it actualy takes a lot of time to develop a product, and I would rather focus on what I have always done, and do it even better.

How do you see the brand 10 years from now?

My dream is still the one of the very first day, to see the brand grow and spread worldwide as an example of beauty, design and uniqueness.

I also want my brand to be known as a good example of reliability, service and attention to its customers.

Las esmeraldas, igual que las aguamarinas, están formadas por un mineral, el berilo, que es incoloro cuando se encuentra en estado puro. Es una pequeña cantidad de cromo lo que le da a la esmeralda su intenso color verde.

A lo largo de la historia, esta piedra preciosa ha tenido un papel muy destacado y ha sido objeto de deseo por parte de decenas de civilizaciones. Por este motivo, algunas de las esmeraldas más famosas se observan en museos y colecciones.

Colombia es el centro mundial de la minería de esmeraldas. La mina de Muzo, al noroeste de Bogotá, es una de las más conocidas por la producción de piedras de fina calidad y de un color verde profundo. Por detrás de Colombia, el segundo máximo productor mundial de esmeraldas es Brasil. En África también hay algunos yacimientos, pero no tan importantes.

The word “emerald” comes from the Greek “smaragdos”, meaning green precious stone. The marvellous green colour of emeralds is incomparable in the world of gemstones. So it is no surprise that they are classified as one of the four most highly prized traditional precious stones, along with diamonds, rubies and sapphires.

Like aquamarines, emeralds are formed by beryl, a mineral that is colourless in its pure state. Emeralds’ intense green colour is produced by a small quantity of chrome.

Throughout history, this precious stone has played a highly outstanding role and has been an object of desire in dozens of civilizations.

For this reason, some of the most famous emeralds can be seen in museums and collections.

Colombia is the world centre of emerald mining. The Muzo mine, to the north-east of Bogota, is one of the best known for the production of fine-quality stones with a deep green colour.

After Colombia, the second-largest worldwide producer of emeralds is Brazil. There are also some deposits in Africa, but not as important.

Those of Zambia stand out.

When valuing an emerald, various factors that can alter its value and quality must be taken into account.

COLOR - El color más valioso es el que tira ligeramente hacia verde azulado, en un tono medio oscuro y saturación fuerte y viva. Su color debe distribuirse de manera uniforme, sin zonificaciones. Si el color es demasiado amarillento o demasiado azulado, su valor cae en consecuencia.

COLOUR - The most valuable colour is that which leans slightly towards bluish-green, in a half-dark tone with strong and vivid saturation. Its colour must be evenly distributed, with no zoning. If the colour is too yellowish or too bluish, its value drops as a result.

CLARIDAD - Les esmeraldas suelen contener inclusiones y otros defectos. Estos defectos no se ven como aspectos negativos para la esmeralda como lo serían para otras piedras preciosas. De hecho, estos errores se consideran parte del carácter de la piedra y se utilizan para garantizar al comprador que la piedra es natural.

CLARITY - Emeralds usually contain inclusions and other defects. As with other precious stones, these defects are not seen as negative aspects for the emerald. In fact, these errors are considered as part of the stone’s character and are used to guarantee to the buyer that the stone is natural.

CUT - There is a cut that has been specially developed for this gemstone and is therefore called the emerald cut. This cut is rectangular or square and its oblique corners highlight the clarity and beauty of this precious stone. Emeralds are often also cut into classic shapes.

SIZE - The quality of a stone is more important than the quality. The intensity of the green colour in the best emeralds is unequalled by anything in Nature. Being bigger does not make them more valuable, although obviously with the same intensity and purity, their value increases along with the size.

Lo primero que me viene a la mente cuando pienso en el color verde es la esperanza, una palabra que encuentro positiva, optimista y con mucha energía. Seguramente por esto desde pequeña ya tenía predilección por este color. La esmeralda, verde por definición, tiene un color verde más azulado que amarillento, característica que la hace especial y muy apreciada. Dentro de las piedras cristalinas (translúcidas) es la única que tiene este color, que en inglés se denomina “bluish green”. La esmeralda es una gema con mucho carisma y son muchas las culturas que la han divinizado y utilizado para sus ornamentos durante decenas de siglos.

A nivel estético es una piedra que da mucha vida a la persona que la lleva, ya que la intensidad de su verde la hace muy favorecedora y luminosa.

The first thing that comes to mind when I think about green is hope, a word that I find positive, optimistic and with a lot of energy. This is probably why I have had a predilection for this colour since I was very young. The emerald, green by definition, has a more bluish than yellowish green colour, something that makes it special and highly prized. Among the crystalline (translucent) stones it is the only one with this bluish green colour. The emerald is a gemstone with a lot of charisma and many cultures have deified it and used it for their ornaments for dozens of centuries.

Aesthetically speaking, it is a stone which breathes much life into the person wearing it, as the intensity of its green makes it very flattering and bright.

Panerai se puede entender sin su historia. El patrón de los relojes de esta marca es reconocible a simple vista. Cada reloj Panerai es tan singular como la historia que explica. Una historia que tiene sus orígenes en Florencia, donde el empresario, artesano e innovador Giovanni Panerai abrió la primera relojería de la ciudad en 1860. Se trataba de un taller de relojería, que además se convirtió en la primera escuela de relojería de la ciudad. Se llamaba “Orologeria Svizzera”, y estaba en el Ponte alle Grazie, pero más tarde se trasladó al Palazzo Arcivescovile de la Piazza San Giovanni, donde todavía están las dependencias actuales.

The benchmark of this brand’s watches is recognisable at a glance. Every Panerai watch is as unique as the story behind it. A story that harks back to Florence, where the entrepreneur, craftsman and innovator Giovanni Panerai opened the first watchmaking establishment in the city in 1860. It was a watchmaking workshop which also became the city’s first watchmaking school. It was called «Orologeria Svizzera», and was located at the Ponte alle Grazie, but it subsequently moved to the Palazzo Arcivescovile in Piazza San Giovanni, where the premises are still to be found today.

En 1916 Panerai registró la primera de las numerosas patentes de la trayectoria de innovación de la marca. Se trata del Radiomir, un polvo obtenido a partir del radio empleado para conferir luminiscencia a los instrumentos de avistamiento y las esferas. Esta florescencia se inventó para satisfacer las necesidades militares de la Armada Real Italiana, a la cual suministraba instrumentos desde hacía varios años. La colaboración militar se aceleró en vigilias de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. El prototipo de reloj Radiomir, creado para las misiones submarinas de las órdenes del Primer Grupo Submarino, presentaba ya muchas de las características que todavía hoy lo distinguen: una caja de grandes dimensiones (47 mm) en acero y de forma almohadillada, números e índices horarios luminiscentes que proporcionaban un grado de visibilidad sin precedentes bajo el agua, asas de la correa soldadas a la caja, movimiento mecánico de cuerda manual y correa amplia resistente al agua con una longitud suficiente para ser atada por encima del vestido de inmersión. El prototipo del Radiomir entra en producción en el año 1938 y poco a poco se fue transformando para atender mejor a las necesidades de la Armada Italiana. De todas estas evoluciones nació el reloj llamado Radiomir 1940, todavía presente en las colecciones actuales.

Fueron años prolíficos para la marca. Un año después del inicio de la Segunda Guerra Mundial se presentó el prototipo del primer cronógrafo Panerai, el Mare Nostrum, diseñado para los oficiales de cubierta. Entrada la década de los 50 se introdujo la adaptación del icónico dispositivo de protección de la corona provisto de un puente y una palanca que la presiona y la protege; la transformación del Radiomir al Luminor era ya un hecho. La solidez, la resistencia y la visibilidad bajo el agua alcanzaron un nivel sin precedentes en la historia de la relojería. El nombre de Luminor proviene de la sustancia luminiscente que sustituye al Radiomir. Actualmente, los modelos con esta caja forman parte de la colección Luminor 1950.

In 1916 Panerai registered the first of the many patents in the brand’s history of innovation. It was Radiomir, a powder obtained from the radium used to give luminescence to sighting instruments and dials. This fluorescence was invented to satisfy the military needs of the Royal Italian Navy, to which the firm had been supplying instruments for several years.

This military collaboration was stepped up for carrying out watches during the Second World War. The prototype Radiomir watch, created for the submarine missions of the First Submarine Group, already had many of the features that still distinguishes it today: a large padded steel case (47 cm), luminescent numbers and hour markers that provided un unprecedented degree of visibility underwater, strap lugs welded to the case, hand-wound mechanical movement and a wide waterproof strap long enough to be fastened on top of a diving suit. The prototype of the Radiomir entered production in 1938 and was progressively transformed to better meet the needs of the Italian Navy. All of these changes resulted in the watch named Radiomir 1940, which still figures in current collections.

They were prolific years for the brand. A year after the onset of the Second World War the prototype of the first Panerai chronograph was presented. This was the Mare Nostrum, designed for deck officers. In the early 1950s the adaptation of the iconic crown protection device was introduced, with a bridge and a lever that pressed and protected it. The transformation of the Radiomir into the Luminor was now complete. Robustness, resilience and underwater visibility reached a level unprecedented in the history of watchmaking. The name Luminor comes from the luminescent substance that replaced Radiomir. Today, the models with this case belong to the Luminor 1950 collection.

La gestión de la empresa seguía siendo familiar y la producción se destinaba solamente a modelos para encargos militares. En 1993 se produce un gran punto de inflexión cuando Officine Panerai presenta su primera colección dirigida al público. Se trataba de tres modelos en edición limitada creados por orden de la armada en la Segunda Guerra Mundial. El éxito fue absoluto. Solo cuatro años más tarde, el Grupo Richemont compró la marca y creó una red de distribuidores seleccionados primero en Italia y después en los mercados internacionales. En 2002 se inaugura la primera manufactura de Officine Panerai en Neuchâtel, y tres años más tarde ya tenían el primer movimiento, el P.2002, un calibre de cuerda manual con función GMT y reserva de marcha de 8 días. Desde entonces las evoluciones han sido constantes y la progresión de la marca ha ido siempre en aumento.

A pesar de la internacionalización de la marca, cada uno de los detalles de todos sus modelos evocan a su historia, y el motivo por el que fueron diseñados y construidos, cumpliendo las órdenes de la Armada Italiana. Una historia que no ha dejado de dirigir una mirada atenta al futuro y persevera en su búsqueda de la excelencia técnica que distingue a Officine Panerai.

The firm was still family-run and production was exclusively devoted to military orders.

1993 saw a significant turning point when Officine Panerai presented its first collection aimed at the public. This was a limited edition of three models created to order for the navy in the Second World War. It was a runaway success. Just four years later, the Richemont Group purchased the brand and created a network of distributors initially selected in Italy and later in the international markets.

En 2002 the first Officine Panerai manufacture was opened in Neuchâtel, and within three years they had their first movement, the P.2002, a hand-wound calibre with GMT function and an 8-day power reserve. Since then, there have been constant changes and the brand has been progressing increasingly.

Despite the internationalisation of the firm, each of the details of all its models evoke its history and the reason why they were designed and built, meeting the orders of the Italian Navy. A story of always keeping a close eye on the future, and persevering in the search for the technical excellence that sets Officine Panerai apart.

Esta singular edificación está situada a pocos pasos de la Manufactura de Alta Relojería de Cartier. Si bien la personalidad del lugar ha sido totalmente conservada, el interior ha sido completamente reconcebido con un entramado invisible altamente técnico. El encuentro entre tradición y modernidad queda plasmado tanto en la arquitectura como en la funcionalidad interior.

La creación de la Maison des Métiers d’Art es una iniciativa pionera mediante la cual Cartier asume el reto de sublimar la tradición y anclar en la modernidad estas prácticas expertas. Los veinte artesanos que allí trabajan están instalados en dos niveles. En la primera planta, los oficios joyeros; en la segunda, el esmalte y la marquetería. La repartición y la organización del espacio demuestran el deseo de Cartier de fomentar la participación y el intercambio entre estos oficios, a través de una dinámica establecida ente los artesanos, y en un sentido más amplio, de cara al público.

El propósito es dar a conocer estos oficios a lo largo de un recorrido a medida. En este contexto, el encuentro con los artesanos representa una experiencia inédita y preciosa. Por su ambiente cálido y confortable, la Maison des Métiers evoca a una colmena, con sus períodos de gran concentración, sus intercambios en torno a prácticas antiguas y la puesta a punto de herramientas específicas. Entre las técnicas que aquí todavía practican los artesanos está el grabado al vacío, el acoplamiento de piedras en mosaico, el esmalte o la marquetería floral.

This unique building is located just a few steps away from the Cartier Fine Watchmaking Manufacture. Although the personality of the place has been totally preserved, the interior has been completely reconceived with a highly technical invisible framework. The meeting of tradition with modernity is embodied in both the architecture and the practicality of the interior.

The creation of the Maison des Métiers d’Art is a pioneering initiative by which Cartier takes on the challenge of upholding tradition and anchoring these expert practices in modernity. The twenty artisans who work there are set up on two levels. On the first floor, the jewellerymaking professions and on the second, enamelling and marquetry. The distribution and organisation of the space demonstrate Cartier’s desire to encourage participation and exchange between these professions through a dynamic established among the artisans and in a broader sense, with the public. The aim is to raise awareness of these professions through a tour designed for the purpose. In this context, meeting the artisans is an unparalleled and precious experience. Its warm and comfortable atmosphere makes the Maison des Métiers reminiscent of a beehive, with its extremely busy periods, its exchanges revolving around ancient practices and the fine tuning of specific tools. The techniques the artisans still practise today include vacuum engraving, interconnecting stones in mosaic form, enamelling and floral marquetry.

Throughout its history TAG Heuer has typically refused to limit itself to repeating the traditional art of watchmaking and has kept it alive and evolving by integrating elements of the present and the future. Ceramics have many properties which make them an ideal material for the field of watchmaking. Para Tudor la imagen y la estética son muy importantes. Para marcar personalidad y tendencia, a menudo hay que arriesgar y abrir nuevos campos. La marca de relojería suiza así lo ha hecho y, gracias a sus decisiones, ha sabido colocarse al frente de prácticas que actualmente adoptan otras marcas en la industria relojera. La correa de tejido es un buen ejemplo de ello. En 2009, cuando la mayoría de las marcas de relojes suizos de lujo todavía desconocían la correa textil o la consideraban indigna del nivel de sofisticación de sus productos, Tudor halló en ella un entorno de desarrollo. For Tudor, image and look are very important.

To define a personality and set a trend, it is often necessary to take risks and open up new spheres. The Swiss watchmaking brand has done this and its decisions have led it to lead the field in practices that are currently being adopted in other watchmaking firms. The fabric strap is a good example. In 2009, when most of the Swiss luxury watch firms knew nothing about fabric straps or considered them unworthy of their products’ level of sophistication, Tudor found a development environment in them. As with many innovations, the use of fabric straps originated in the military arena. Sporty and easy to change, this strap revitalised interest among watch collectors in the first decade of the new millennium.

Tudor’s fashion design workshop is constantly immersed in the search to find subtle details that increase the pleasure of wearing a watch on your wrist. The fabric strap could be an accessory to meet these characteristics and the firm immediately recognised the style potential this could add to its watches.

Thus, following its perfectionist logic, it produced its interpretation of the fabric strap. It completely changed its architecture to create a strap with an adjustable length, inspired by the design of the safety belts in old sports cars.

For its production, the firm sought out one of the last workshops in France that masters the textile technique named “Jacquard”. The advantages that this technique offers include the production of a fabric with a high intensity of fibres that provides robustness and softness at the same time.

El año 2010, en el Salón de Relojería de Baselworld, Tudor presentó el modelo Heritage Chrono acompañado de una correa adicional de tejido. Esta correa con rallas de colores hacía juego con la esfera del reloj y evocaba las franjas de los coches de carreras. In 2010, at the Baselworld World Watch, Clock and Jewellery Show, Tudor presented the Heritage Chrono model with a supplementary fabric strap. This strap with coloured stripes matched the watch face and was reminiscent of the stripes on racing cars. It was an immediate success and since then, every one of the brand’s Heritage watches has come with its own strap in a fabric version.

Today, Tudor offers a series of fabric straps in different styles, specific fabrics, polyethylene fibres, silk or cotton, depending on the desired effect.

One of the most spectacular examples is the Heritage Ranger model, in which the camouflage motif on the strap is not printed, but rather woven into the warp using differently-coloured threads. This production method provides an unequalled richness of texture and guarantees both comfort and durability.

Marc Newson has been described as the most influential designer of his generation. He has worked in a wide range of disciplines and has created everything: from furniture and objects for cars to watches and luxury writing items, or even private aeroplanes and yachts for customers from all over the world.

Nacido en Sídney, Newson pasó gran parte de su infancia viajando por Europa y Asia. Empezó a experimentar con el diseño de mobiliario cuando era estudiante. Newson ha vivido y trabajado en Tokio, París y Londres, donde tiene su base ahora mismo. Sus clientes incluyen una amplia gama de las marcas más conocidas y de más prestigio en todo el mundo.

Este modelo fue bautizado como Atmos 561 y estaba alojado dentro de una caja de cristal de Baccarat especialmente soplado a mano que actúa como protector del mecanismo, que parece flotar en suspensión como por arte de magia. In the sphere of clock and watch making, in 2008 the designer was commissioned by the Swiss firm Jaeger-LeCoultre to design a special edition for the anniversary of one of its emblematic timepieces, the Atmos, a clock that functions independently using only temperature difference. This model was christened the Atmos 561 and was housed in a specially hand-blown Baccarat glass case that protects the mechanism, which seems to float in suspension as if by magic. The final result was an intriguing and almost magical object, rather like a ship in a bottle.

Following the success of this design, Jaeger-LeCoultre approached Marc Newson again to reinterpret the Calibre 566 with a new Atmos that includes a graphic representing the sky of the Northern hemisphere, along with the cardinal point and the signs of the zodiac.

Quien hasta entonces había sido el CEO de Jaeger-Le Coultre, Jerome Lambert, pasó a ocupar el mismo cargo en Montblanc y enseguida tuvo claro que tenía que repetir el éxito que había alcanzado con la marca de relojería suiza, encargando a Newson una colección de escritura. The erstwhile CEO of Jaeger-Le Coultre, Jerome Lambert, took up the same position at Montblanc and immediately determined to repeat the success he had achieved with the Swiss watchmaking brand by commissioning Newson with a writing collection. Thus the Montblanc M collection was born in 2015, designed by Marc Newson and including an innovative magnetic closing mechanism with the Montblanc emblem incrusted in the “plateau” of the writing instrument.

Esta nueva referencia combina dos grandes especialidades de Patek Philippe: el cronógrafo y la hora universal, una alianza muy poco común. De hecho, hasta el momento la manufactura ginebrina solo había fabricado un cronógrafo con hora universal, que fue una pieza única en 1940 y que puede verse en el museo de la marca. Los especialistas han trabajado durante mucho tiempo para que estos dos mecanismos de alta complicación puedan adaptarse perfectamente el uno al otro con la máxima precisión. This new product combines two of Patek Philippe’s great specialities - the chronograph and world time, a very rare partnership. In fact, the Geneva manufacture had only made one chronograph with world time, which was a single piece made in 1940 which can be seen in the firm’s museum. The specialists have worked for a long time so that these two high-complication mechanisms may adapt perfectly to each other with the maximum accuracy. The new chronograph comes in a version with a white gold case and a blue dial with hand-embossed guilloché.

Apart from watchmaking, in the early 20th century the Breguet family also made a name for itself in the world of aviation. The two activities mutually nourished each other with the design of mechanisms for the cabin control panels, and of watches for flyers, the Type XX. Today Breguet is continuing this historic collection with a vintage look that crystallises this line’s history and origins, but with technical features that reveal how it belongs to the 21st century. This new IWC model is based on the traditional military aerial observation watch. It has two circular counters in the dial, an outer one that contains only the minutes and seconds and a smaller inner one in red showing the hours. This was done because in these types of observation watch it was vital to have optimum readability of the minutes and seconds. This model has a polished ceramic case, an anthracite-coloured dial and an embossed green calf-skin strap. The Top Gun logo is engraved into the case back.

This is one of the four new models which Panerai has launched to renew the Radiomir 1940 collection. The design of the case is a faithful tribute to the historic models created by the brand for the Italian Navy officers of the 1940s. The changes are even more notable in its interior, as this model comes equipped with a new automatic calibre, fully developed and produced at the Panerai factory in Neuchatel. The new Heritage Pilot Cafè Racer watch takes its inspiration from the “Cafè Racer” motorcycling movement which emerged in England in the mid-20th century. Its young and rebellious adepts looked for a fast, customised bike to go from café to café on the motorways of Britain.

They removed everything superfluous from their machines and tuned the engines to get the most power.

The fairing of this large, 45 mm watch case contains a legendary movement, the self-winding El Primero 4069. An original model, robust with retro touches that bestow it with unique singularity.

Bell & Ross pays tribute to the parachutists of the Second World War. The most feared of soldiers demonstrated their bravery by wearing pirate emblems, both in an attempt to impress their adversaries and also to drive away bad luck. Like a pirate flag, the BR 01 Skull is presented with a skull and crossbones figure. A photoluminescent pigment makes the dial shine in the dark. The bronze colour of the case and the aged look of the leather strap reinforce the vintage, warrior side of a watch of which only 500 have been made.

Más antigua que la obsesión del ser humano por contabilizar el tiempo, es la de pararlo. Así que el paso lógico en el mundo de la relojería era el de poder parar o “grabar” el tiempo. De esa inquietud nace el cronógrafo. Después de éste, la siguiente complicación relojera que devanó los sesos de los relojeros del siglo XIX fue cómo poder tener dos lecturas en un cronógrafo e inventaron el rattrapante.

El rattrapante, no es más que un cronógrafo con la capacidad de memorizar una lectura intermedia o “Lap” sin tener que pararlo. No voy a explicarles cuán complicado fue fabricar esta complicación en 1820, pero sí que les diré que es una de las complicaciones mecánicas más fáciles de identificar en un movimiento visto, ya que su doble trotadora central y las pinzas que bloquean al accionarse el pulsador se ven perfectamente, ya que están montadas en lo más alto del movimiento.

Uno de los rattrapante más bellos e increíbles que se fabrican en nuestro tiempo es el del calibre de manufactura CHR 29-535 PS de Patek Philippe, que ven en la imagen. Es simplemente espectacular. El trabajo hecho en las pinzas de bloqueo del rattrapante no deja indiferente a nadie, y el de los muelles de empuje de éstas es simplemente perfecto. Así que si tienen la oportunidad de adquirirlo o simplemente observarlo, les aseguro que quedarán hipnotizados viéndolo funcionar.

Man’s obsession with stopping time is older than that of keeping it. So the logical next step in watchmaking was to stop or “record” time.

The chronograph was the result of this desire.

After this, the next watchmaking complication to rack the brains of 19th-century watchmakers was how to have two readings in a chronograph. The rattrapante was thus invented.

The rattrapante is nothing more than a chronograph capable memorising an intermediate reading - or “lap” - without the need to stop it.

I am not going to explain to you how difficult it was to produce this complication in 1820, but I will tell you that it is one of the easiest mechanical complications to identify in a visible movement, as its double central trotteuse and the pins that lock when the push-piece is operated can be seen perfectly, since they are mounted at the highest part of the movement.

The relationship between Geneva and watches began in the mid-16th century following the Calvinist reformation.

Desde hace siglos, Ginebra, y toda Suiza en general, gozan de fama mundial por sus relojes. Esta historia empieza a mediados del siglo XVI. En 1541, después de la reforma calvinista y la prohibición de llevar joyas, los orfebres y joyeros suizos se vieron obligados a encontrar otra salida para su oficio, y la hallaron en la fabricación de relojes. Los relojeros suizos no solamente se convirtieron en maestros en su oficio, sino también en hábiles comerciantes.

En 1601, se creó ya Gremio de Relojeros de Ginebra. La ayuda financiera les permitió exportar sus creaciones hasta oriente y las colonias norteamericanas. Los componentes se fabricaban en hogares privados, o en pequeños talleres, en pueblos cercanos a Ginebra, y el montaje final se producía en las relojerías de Ginebra. La industria fue creciendo y la producción se fue extendiendo a las montañas.

En 1790, Ginebra exportaba más de 60.000 relojes. La industria relojera suiza aprovechó todos los avances tecnológicos, y artesanales, para mejorar la calidad de sus relojes e introducir innovaciones. La reputación del reloj suizo es mundial gracias a su legado: su gran calidad, precisión, fiabilidad y resistencia.

For centuries Geneva, and the whole of Switzerland in general, have enjoyed worldwide fame due to their watches. This story began in the mid-16th century. In 1541, following the Calvinist reformation and the prohibition of wearing jewels, the Swiss goldsmiths and jewellers were compelled to seek another outlet for their profession, and they found it in watchmaking. The Swiss watchmakers not only became masters in their profession, but also skilful traders. In 1601 the Watchmakers’ Guild of Geneva was created. The financial assistance enabled them to export their creations to the East and the North American colonies. The components were made in private homes or in small workshops, and the final assembly was done in the watchmaking centres of Geneva. The industry grew and production spread out to the mountains. By 1790 Geneva was exporting over 60,000 watches. The Swiss watchmaking industry took advantage of all the technological and artisan advances to improve the quality of its watches and introduce innovations. The reputation of the Swiss watch is worldwide thanks to its legacy: its great quality, accuracy, reliability and durability.

IMPRESCINDIBLE · UNMISSABLE Hoy en día es imposible pasear por Ginebra y no impregnarte de relojería. En la Rue du Rhone se encuentran los establecimientos más selectos y espectaculares. Una visita obligada para los amantes de la relojería es el Museo de Patek Philippe, que cuenta con una magnífica exposición de más de dos mil piezas, en la que se incluyen ejemplares de principios del siglo XIX. En el corazón de Ginebra encontramos el ”Horloge Fleurie”, el famoso reloj de flores construido como un homenaje a la tradición relojera ginebrina. Este reloj está muy cerca del lago Leman, uno de los encantos naturales de la ciudad. La vida gira alrededor de sus aguas. Hay diferentes puentes situados en la zona más estrecha que unen las dos orillas. Dentro del propio lago se encuentra el emblemático “Jet d’Eau”, un surtidor que expulsa agua a más de 140 metros de altura y que puede ser visto prácticamente desde cualquier punto de Ginebra.

La gastronomía tampoco nos puede pasar por alto en una visita a la capital de Suiza. No debemos luchar contra el impulso de entrar en las panaderías artesanas y sumergirnos en el placer de auténticas exquisiteces de chocolate. Y es que, aparte de los relojes, el chocolate es la otra señal de identidad de la ciudad y del país en general.

Las calles del casco antiguo hay que recorrerlas a pie y con calma. Cada paso se puede convertir en una experiencia. Calles empedradas cargadas de historia se intercalan con plantas y flores que decoran los parques y los balcones.

Después de Zurich, Ginebra es la segunda ciudad más grande del país, y una de las que cuentan con menor contaminación ambiental y mejor calidad de vida de todo el mundo. Gran parte de este valor se lo dan unos Alpes Suizos que resiguen el marco idílico de la ciudad.

Today it is impossible to walk around Geneva and not become submerged in watchmaking.

Rue du Rhone houses the most select and spectacular establishments. A must visit for lovers of watchmaking is the Patek Philippe Museum, which has a magnificent exhibition of over two thousand pieces, including specimens from the early 19th century.

In the heart of Geneva you will find the “Horloge Fleurie”, the famous flower clock built as a tribute to Geneva watchmaking tradition.

This clock is very near Lake Geneva, one of the city’s natural charms. Life revolves around its waters. There are various bridges in the narrowest area that joins the two banks. In the lake itself there is the emblematic “Jet d’Eau” a jet that shoots water over 140 metres up into the air and which can be seen from practically any point in Geneva.

Neither must you overlook the local cuisine on a visit to the Swiss capital. It is better not to fight the impulse to go into one of the craft bakeries and submerge in the pleasure of authentic chocolate delicacies. Apart from the watches, chocolate is the other hallmark of the city and the country in general.

The streets of the old quarter must be explored on foot and unhurriedly. Every step can turn into an experience. Cobbled streets loaded with history are interspersed with plants and flowers which decorate the parks and the balconies.

After Zurich, Geneva is the second-largest city in the country and one of those with the least environmental pollution and best qualities of life in the entire world. Much of this value is provided by Swiss Alps which trace the city’s idyllic framework.

Situado muy cerca del “Parc des Bastions”, en pleno corazón de Ginebra, es uno de aquellos lugares históricos que dejan huella. Se puede ir a comer a cualquier hora del día y siempre hay una buena opción en la carta.

Un año bisiesto es un año civil que tiene un día más que los años comunes, es decir, tiene 366 días. El día de más se añade al final del mes de febrero, que era el último en el calendario romano, de tal manera que este mes pasa a tener 29 días.

Este 2016 ha sido año bisiesto, y Pere Quera 1887 y Patek Philippe lo han querido celebrar. El motivo de la celebración es que la marca de relojería suiza dispone, en algunos modelos, de una complicación que se llama calendario perpetuo y que prevé de forma mecánica que, cada 4 años, a finales de febrero se sume un día, así como que en el resto de años dicho mes tenga 28 días en lugar de 30. La fiesta de fin de año bisiesto se celebró en el Hotel Mas de Torrent, donde también se llevó a cabo una observación espacial.

A leap year is a calendar year that has one day more than normal years; in other words, it has 366 days. The extra day is added at the end of February, which was the last year in the Roman calendar, so that this becomes a month of 29 days. 2016 has been a leap year, so Pere Quera 1887 and Patek Philippe decided to celebrate it. The reason for the celebration is that in some of its models the Swiss watchmaker has a complication called a perpetual calendar, which mechanically predicts that every 4 years, one day is added at the end of February, so that in the rest of the years this month will have 28 days instead of 30. Cartier y Pere Quera 1887 han presentado en Girona la última colección de la marca francesa: Clé. El evento tuvo lugar en el Salón de Descanso del Teatro Municipal de Girona, donde más de 120 invitados de Pere Quera Joiers pudieron ver las nuevas creaciones de la Maison, en un ambiente tranquilo y relajado. El evento de presentación contó con la presencia de la embajadora y relaciones públicas de Cartier, Simoneta Gómez-Acebo, y de la directora comercial de la firma en España, Rose-Marie Serrano. La velada concluyó con el concierto de la cantante alemana Ute Lemper en el propio Teatro Municipal, ofreciendo su espectáculo Last Tango in Berlin.

The Cap Roig Festival in Calella de Calafrugell is one of the best known in the world due to its spectacular bill and unbeatable setting. As was to be expected, this year Rolex and Pere Quera 1887 were once more ambassadors of the Festival with a private party in the “Lovers’ Garden”, prior to Rod Stewart’s opening concert of the musical event.

4a NOCHE SOLIDARIA HOTEL CAL A DEL PI Pere Quera Joiers volvió a colaborar con la Noche Solidaria que impulsa por cuarto año el Hotel Sallés Cala del Pi de Platja d’Aro. Este año los fondos recaudados iban destinados a la lucha contra el cáncer infantil que está llevando a cabo Catalunya Contra el Càncer. Pere Quera 1887 donó para la recaudación un collar de perlas cultivadas japonesas y oro, que entregó la modelo y presentadora Martina Klein.

Pere Quera Joiers collaborated once more with the Charity Night promoted for the fourth year by the Hotel Sallés Cala del Pi in Platja d’Aro. This year the funds collected went to the struggle against child cancer being carried out by Catalunya Contra el Càncer. For the collection, Pere Quera 1887 donated a necklace of Japanese cultivated pearls and gold, handed over by model and presenter Martina Klein.

The Pere Quera 1887 shop in Girona has opened an exhibition to celebrate the launch of this new watch with a cosmopolitan feel, aimed at defining a new generation.

Un reducido número de clientes de Pere Quera 1887 han podido visitar la manufactura de Patek Philippe en Ginebra. Allí han podido observar los diferentes procesos de fabricación de los relojes de esta prestigiosa marca suiza en dos centros de trabajo. En la manufactura de Plan-Les-Ouates pudieron ver en primera persona los procesos de fabricación y decoración de los mecanismos y las piezas de gran complicación. Mientras tanto, en la manufactura de Perly observaron la fabricación de cajas de relojes, pulseras, grabados y la parte de joyería. Durante su estancia en Ginebra también pudieron hacer una visita al Museo de Patek Philippe y repasar los 175 años de historia de la última manufactura relojera, familiar e independiente de Ginebra.

There they saw the various processes involved in making the watches of this prestigious Swiss brand in the workplaces.

At the Plan-Les-Ouates manufacture they witnessed firsthand the production and decoration processes of the mechanisms and pieces of great complication first hand. At the Perly manufacture, they also saw the production of watch cases, bracelets, engravings, as well as the jewellerymaking side. During their stay in Geneva, they also visited the Patek Philippe Museum and looked back at the 175-year history of the last independent family manufacture in Geneva.

OMEGA BIEL

Pere Quera Sans ha pasado una semana en la manufactura de Omega en la ciudad suiza de Biel para conocer todos los procesos de producción y adquirir el grado de “Grand Ambassador” de la prestigiosa marca de relojería. Allí ha podido presenciar paso a paso cuáles son los sistemas de control y precisión de los relojes y las tendencias de futuro. Esta formación tiene lugar 48 años después de que su abuelo, Pere Quera Güell, visitara la misma fábrica por primera vez. Ellos son ya la 4ª y 6ª generación del negocio familiar. Pere Quera Sans has spent a week at the Omega manufacture in the Swiss city of Biel to get to know the production processes and acquire the prestigious watchmaking brand’s title of “Grand Ambassador”. There he had the opportunity to observe the control and accuracy systems of the watches and the future trends step by step. This learning process took place 48 years after his grandfather Pere Quera Güell visited the same factory for the first time. These are now the 4th and 6th generation of the family business. In the photographs, the grandfather at the right of the picture in 1968 and the grandson in front of the same place in 2016.

Omega and James Bond have been inseparable for over two decades. The Swiss watchmaker’s collaboration with the world’s most famous spy began in 1995. No matter what challenges he has confronted, James Bond has always trusted the watch he wears on his wrist. The latest of the James Bond films is Spectre, and to celebrate this partnership with Omega, Pere Quera 1887 organised a private showing at the Albèniz Plaça cinemas in Girona, where over 200 customers had the chance to watch the film and admire the limited-edition models worn by Daniel Craig in it: a Seamaster Aquaterra and a Seamaster 300. Some of the customers were photographed inside the emblematic gun barrel of the entire Bond saga.

Este año el Festival Castell de Peralada ha estado de aniversario. This has been an anniversary year for the Castell de Perelada Festival. For 30 years the mediaeval site of this Empordà town has been the scene of a music festival characterised as much by its artistic offerings as the uniqueness of this location. Pere Quera 1887 has hosted the exclusive exhibition of one of Rolex’s most emblematic watches, the Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 40, the “watch of presidents”. The latest generation of this watch includes a new calibre completely developed by the watchmaking firm. In this exhibition, visitors had the opportunity to discover the Day-Date 40 by means of interactive screens mounted on a structure inspired by this model’s emblematic President bracelet.

The boutiques of Pere Quera 1887 in Girona and Figueres have been dressed in colours this summer to match the latest promotion of the Swiss watchmaker Jaeger-LeCoultre.

Hublot ha sido la primera marca de artículos de lujo que ha invertido en el universo del fútbol. Este pasado verano se ha disputado la Eurocopa de Francia y la firma suiza ha sido de nuevo el cronometrador oficial. Para conmemorar este evento especial, Hublot ha creado un reloj edición especial de 100 unidades, que lleva el nombre de Big Bang Unico Chronograph Retrograde UEFA Euro 2016 y que se ha podido ver en una espectacular exposición en Pere Quera 1887. En esta muestra había fotografías de embajadores de la marca en este deporte como Pelé, José Mourinho o David Trezeguet.

Hublot has been the first brand of luxury articles to invest in the world of football. This summer the UEFA European Championship was held in France, and the Swiss brand was the new official timekeeper. To mark this special event, Hublot created a limited edition of 100 watches named Big Bang Unico Chronograph Retrograde UEFA Euro 2016, which was displayed at a spectacular exhibition at Pere Quera 1887. The show included photographs of ambassadors of the brand in this sport, such as Pelé, José Mourinho and David Trezeguet.

The partnership between Panerai and the sea has been well known since the beginning of the last century, when the brand began supplying watches to the Italian Navy.

These historical links are still very much alive today and are reinforced every year with the Panerai Yachts Challenge.

The brand’s iconic vessel is the Eilean, a 22-metre sailboat with smooth lines from 1936, which Panerai has faithfully restored since it was considered the authentic spirit of the brand. Thanks to Pere Quera 1887, this summer the boat has visited the Costa Brava and Costa Blanca. A small number of Pere Quera customers were able to sail on it exclusively in both Girona and Alicante. Pere Quera colabora con el nuevo proyecto de ciclismo iniciado por el profesional canadiense Christian Meier y que lleva por nombre La Fábrica Race Team. Se trata de un joven equipo integrado por 8 ciclistas que compite de forma regular en pruebas del calendario autonómico. Todos estos jóvenes lucen en la parte posterior y en el brazo de sus maillots el logo de Pere Quera 1887 así como un reloj de la marca deportiva Suunto que comercializa.

El PGA Catalunya Resort, uno de los campos de golf más prestigiosos de Europa, acogió la primera prueba del Trofeo Rolex de Golf 2016 de la mano de Pere Quera 1887. El día comenzó con un almuerzo en la Casa Club del campo y finalizó con un cóctel y entrega de premios de la marca de relojería suiza.

Pere Quera collaborates with the new cycling project launched by the Canadian professional Christian Meier and which goes by the name of La Fábrica Race Team. It is a young team made up of 8 cyclists who compete regularly in races in the regional calendar. All of these youngsters carry the Pere Quera 1887 logo on the back and arm of their jerseys, as well as a watch of the Suunto brand that it markets.

The PGA Catalunya Resort, one of the most prestigious golf courses in Europe, hosted the first 2016 Rolex Golf Trophy through Pere Quera 1887. The winner of the handicap trophy was Ramon Sánchez-Sauthier, with a net score of 70 and the scratch prize winner was Javier Nieto, with a score of 76. Both classified for the final of the circuit. In the women’s category, the winner was Pepita Moré. The day unfolded in magnificent conditions and the golf was played under the Stroke Play scoring system. The day began with brunch at the course’s Casa Club and ended with a cocktail and the awarding of the Swiss watchmaking firm’s prizes.

The Tour de France is the top event in the cycling calendar and the Tissot brand is this competition’s official timekeeper. Ilusiones a medida. Durante una semana la boutique de Figueres de Pere Quera 1887 organizó un taller de confección de joyas junto con la marca de joyería italiana Dodo. Esta marca se caracteriza por tener un amplio abanico de accesorios con los que todo el mundo puede crear su propia joya a su gusto, sin que haya ninguna otra igual. Una joyera italiana enseñó a las clientas y clientes cuál era el significado de cada ornamento y cómo podían combinarlos.

Dreams made to measure . For one week, the Pere Quera 1887 boutique in Figueres organised a jewellery production workshop along with the Italian jewellerymaking firm Dodo.

This brand features a wide range of accessories everyone can use to create their own completely unique jewellery to suit their taste. An Italian jewellery maker showed the customers the significance of each ornament and how they could be combined.

TEMPS DE FLORS GIRONA

Por primera vez, Pere Quera 1887 ha abierto en la ciudad de Girona una de las puertas más representativas del casco antiguo de la ciudad con motivo del Girona Temps de Flors.

Se trata de la entrada del edificio del número 21 de la calle de la Cort Reial. Tras la característica puerta verde hay una escalera modernista que se ornamentó con flores blancas y verdes, igual que los colores que predominan en este emblemático espacio.

For the first time, in the city of Girona Pere Quera 1887 has opened one of the most emblematic doors to the city’s old quarter on the occasion of Girona Temps de Flors. It is the entrance to building number 21 of Calle Cort Reial. Behind the typical green door there is a Modernist staircase which was decorated with white and green flowers, the same colours that predominate in this characteristic location.

BY MARIONA QUERA La joyera y gemóloga Mariona Quera ha colaborado nuevamente con la Fundación Ramon Noguera con una nueva línea de joyas para conmemorar el 50 aniversario de esta entidad sin ánimo de lucro, que trabaja para garantizar la calidad de vida de personas con discapacidad intelectual en la provincia de Girona. Hace cuatro años, Mariona Quera ya colaboró enseñando a los jóvenes de la fundación a crear joyas con sus propias manos. Este año, y para celebrar el medio siglo de vida de la fundación, Mariona Quera ha diseñado un brazalete y un colgante de plata que se comercializa en la sede de la fundación bajo el nombre de FRN by Mariona Quera.

The jewellery maker and gemmologist Mariona Quera has collaborated with the Ramon Noguera Foundation in a new line of jewellery to mark the 50th anniversary of this non-profit organisation which works to guarantee the quality of life of people with intellectual disability in the province of Girona. Four years ago, Mariona Quera was already collaborating by teaching the young people of the foundation to create jewellery with their own hands. This year, to celebrate the foundation’s half century of existence, Mariona Quera has designed a silver bracelet and pendant which is sold at the foundation’s headquarters under the name of FRN by Mariona Quera.

This year Bell&Ross have entered the world of Formula 1 and, inevitably, they have done so thanks to the French Bell&Ross team. To celebrate this partnership, they exclusively invited two of the country’s points of sale to the Paddock of the Montmeló Formula 1 race track.

Panerai’s origins are irrevocably linked with the city of Florence. That was where the brand came into being and that is where it still has its headquarters.
