LIFE-SAVING OPPORTUNITY BreastScreen mobile service heading to Peregian Springs Sunshine Coast women are encouraged to invest time in their health and hit the shops when the BreastScreen mobile service comes to Peregian Springs Shopping Centre in August.

BreastScreen Queensland Medical Director Dr Fiona Jackson said they are excited to bring the free service to this area.

“This will be the first time we will be taking the mobile service to the Peregian area. Bringing the free service to the shopping centre will help make it more accessible for busy women.

“It can be hard for women to find time for themselves to have these regular health checks but it’s Peregian Springs News - August 2023

important they do,” Dr Jackson said.

Queensland women have a one in seven chance of being diagnosed with breast cancer by the age of 85.

This means that women can’t afford to skip breast screens.

“A breast screen takes around 30 minutes, and one every two years could literally save a woman’s life and ensure they are there for their family in the future.”

“What screening does is detect breast cancer earlier, so that it can be found when it’s small and confined to the breast,” Dr Jackson said.

BreastScreen Queensland offers free breast cancer screening to woman aged 40 and over who have no breast symptoms.

If you’re new here you might feel like the winter is really mild, but wait a few years & trust me it starts to feel a whole lot colder. Besides, who likes waking up in the dark to exercise anyway? We want to see the beauty of our surroundings when we're out and about, right? Well, the promise of Spring is upon us, & it’s encouraging to know we are on the road to bid farewell to winter. Although, there is no disputing that

winter on the Coast, has its own charm, with cozy evenings by the fireplace, or the sights of misty mornings hugging the mountains, & indulging in food that warms the body and soul. We truly do live in a beautiful place, it’s hard to find reasons to complain right? MAJOR GRANTS NOW OPEN

FUNDING FOR COMMUNITY ORGANISATIONS AND GROUPS

Sunshine Coast Council's Major Grants program offers community organizations and groups a chance to secure valuable funding of up to $30,000* for their initiatives.

The program aims to support projects that enhance the region's cultural, sporting, environmental, and community well-being, reflecting the council's commitment to empowering local organizations to make a positive impact.

Applicants can submit their proposals under six categories, including community development, creative development, and sports and recreation. To assist interested

parties, Council will conduct grant writing workshops between July 25 and August 3, providing insights into the application process and offering guidance.

The success story of Coolum Tennis Club Inc. exemplifies the program's benefits, as they received $19,000 in the last round, contributing to their synthetic grass court resurfacing project, leading to increased membership and usage of their facilities.

Eligible not-for-profit organizations can now apply for up to $15,000 for one-off projects, events, and activities, while infrastructure projects can receive up to $30,000.

Additionally, Environment Levy Grants of up to $5,000 are available for projects promoting biodiversity and waterways.

The round opens on July 17, 2023, and closes on August 28, 2023. Register for grant writing workshops on Council's website. Notification of results is anticipated in mid-October 2023. www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au

SISTERS OF INDIA

PAYING IT FORWARD

In January 2023 Sharon Stevens, embarked on a fabrics tour of India, where she found herself in Gujarat.

A state along the Western Coast of India.

This is where she heard the sad story about Suman, a woman rescued from a life of prostitution.

It was a story that not only struck an emotional chord, but resonated with her, and prompted her on a journey to provide support and empower Surat with “Wings to Fly”!!

Suman has since created beautiful handcrafted recycled Saree Bags.

A unique concept whereby, the gorgeous materials which feature an array of patterns & colours, are in essence up-cycled, individually combined, and transformed into a light & easy bag. A bag which is super easy & convenient to slip into your handbag or pocket, for that last minute shopping trip.

Sharon requested 200 of these bags be sent over to her here on the Coast, by her friend Nirav. Nirav rescued Suman from prostitution and has in the past 3 months, rescued another 6 ladies with similar horrific stories of what they’ve endured, these ladies are referred to as the “Sisters of India”.

Nirav has provided these ladies with not only safety, but a roof over their heads, and a source of income producing these Saree recycled products.

These recycled Saree’s would normally end up in landfill, so their efforts are assisting to reduce waste, increase sustainability and support those in need. Nirav ensures the Sisters receive a % of the profits as well as a weekly wage.

Thanks to our gorgeous generous community the first 200 bags sold like hot cakes! Sharon was able to set up a display table at the Noosa Daybreak Bookfest, a 3-day event, whereby 50% of the proceeds went to support the Rotary Clubs Homeless appeal.

Which was a double win for those in need Sharon has been working closely with Nirav and the Sisters over the past month and they now have Furoshiki gift wraps arriving this month.

Furoshiki is the Japanese art of wrapping gifts in fabric. They have developed an Indian version using the recycled Saree’s. These wraps come in 4 different sizes and can be regifted once they are originally used.

Another multi-use, up-cycled material. Her goal for the “Sisters of India” is to provide a regular source of support for the Sisters, in the form of providing much needed equipment to assist them in maintaining an income.

Recently with the help of a generous local Peregian Springs family, they were able to buy a new sewing machine for the business.

Through Sharon’s support network, she has been able to provide demonstrations to individuals along the Coast of Furoshiki gift wrapping. The response to these products has been overwhelming and her aim is to do regular demonstrations.

The recycled Saree bags sell for $10.00 each or 3 for $25.00 – Furoshiki wraps are a similar price. The beautiful Homewares store at Cotton Tree called Coast, is stocking the Recycled Saree Bags and she hopes to find some more stockists along the Coast.

SWOOPING SEASON SAFETY HOW TO STAY SAFE DURING SWOOPING BIRDS SEASON

This protective father will do anything to keep his young safe, but his defensive tactics can make us run for cover.

From July to November, during native bird breeding season, a little kindness and some key tips will help you stay safe from swooping magpies and other defensive birds like plovers, masked lapwing, magpie larks, and butcher birds.

Sunshine Coast Council Conservation Officer Kate Hofmeister said the swooping action only lasted a short time and occurred because the birds felt their nest and young were threatened.

“Swooping only begins once the eggs have hatched and ends once the chicks have left the nest, which is about six to eight weeks,” Ms Hofmeister said.

“For magpies, it’s generally the male that swoops to defend his territory and his young.

“Please be tolerant of these protected and iconic native birds if you walk or ride near nests.

“To protect yourself move quickly through the area but don’t run as this is perceived as a threat.

“Dismount and walk your bike and, where possible, walk-in groups – or avoid the area altogether.

“Wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses or put an umbrella up but don’t swing at them – this will also be perceived as a threat.

“Don’t act aggressively towards them as they have a very long memory, and this will just encourage further defensive behaviour in the future.”

HOW COUNCIL MANAGES DEFENSIVE BIRDS

Ms Hofmeister said we lived in a wildlife friendly biosphere and magpies lived here too, so we needed to find ways to live alongside these protective parents and ensure their continued survival.

“For any reports of birds acting defensively on Council-managed land, we visit the site and do an assessment to figure out the best way to work towards a solution,” she said.

“We may install signage to warn pedestrians of the temporary defensive behaviour and actively monitor the bird if we think it’s going to get worse.

“Magpies are protected under the Nature Conservation Act and penalties apply for injuring the birds.”

Magpies – a friend for life Ms Hofmeister said magpies were very clever birds and one of Australia’s most iconic birds.

“They can identify individuals by their facial features, clothing and have even been known to remember faces in their neighbourhood,” peregianspringsnews.com.au

“While magpies will often stay in one area for up to 20 years, we understand that only 10 per cent of breeding males will actually swoop.

“Unlike other members of the Artamidae family, magpies walk rather than hop.

“They are also extraordinary parents, looking after their young for up to two years.”

Ninderry MP Dan Purdie hosted Shadow Minister for Seniors and Disability Services, John Paul Langbroek, and the Shadow Minister for Housing and Sport, Tim Mander.

Mr Purdie & Club President Tyson Smalley briefed Mr Mander on the Club’s ongoing negotiations with Education Queensland & Sunshine Coast Council to cater for increased demand for better sporting facilities in Coolum. Currently stock levels are low, so buyers are not spoilt for choice. This is keeping the market relatively buoyant despite the interest rate hikes. There are still heaps of buyers looking for a home in our community and there just isn’t enough houses to satisfy the demand.

Although buyers are a lot more conservative & savvier with their spending habits, compared to what we have seen in the past.

HELP SHAPE OUR FUTURE

Protecting our region’s natural assets and managing growth remain among the top priorities for residents, as the community continues to give valuable feedback to help create a healthy environment and liveable Sunshine Coast.

Sunshine Coast Council has released the phase one engagement findings as it works to refresh its Environment and Liveability Strategy, and now the community has another opportunity to learn more about the project and provide input.

Now in its sixth year, the Strategy provides long-term direction for guiding growth and shaping the future of the region to deliver a healthy environment and liveable Sunshine Coast to 2041.

Environment Portfolio Councillor Peter Cox said the changing climate and affordability were examples of growing challenges since Council endorsed the Banksia Award-winning Strategy in 2017.

“To make sure the Strategy keeps pace with change, we asked residents what they viewed as the emerging issues or opportunities for the region, as well as priority actions for Council,” Cr Cox said.

“Common themes we heard were 12

protecting natural areas including our coastal environments, responding to climate change, managing our growing population while maintaining our amazing Sunshine Coast lifestyle and greening our neighbourhoods.

“Many of these emerging issues raised by the community are already acknowledged within the Strategy, so now we can look for ways to strengthen strategic directions and priority actions that address these.”

Environment Portfolio Councillor Maria Suarez said the second phase of engagement would ask residents for feedback on proposed changes to Strategic Directions in the Strategy that strengthen its position, acknowledge emerging challenges and opportunities and include the latest available information.

“These proposed changes include steps like recognising the urgent action required around climate change, incorporating the UN Sustainable Development Goals and our designation as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and further highlighting the importance of greener neighbourhoods, affordable living, accessibility and active transport.”

The refreshed Strategy also proposes to introduce new policy positions for waste management and recognising, protecting and celebrating our dark sky.

Council will also invite residents to provide feedback on an updated Implementation Plan.

Cr Suarez said community input would help strengthen the Strategy and ensure its continued future focus and contemporary approach.

“Thank you to everyone who shared what was important to them during phase one, and I encourage residents to continue to provide input as we open the second round of engagement.”

There has been some considerable damage to Laurina Way Park recently that is really unacceptable.

Trees have been cut down, plants pulled out and one of the huge scribbly gums, estimated to be at least 120 years old, has multiple cuts and bark torn. It’s such a shame to see because this tree provides shade, beauty and nesting hollows for wildlife.

Council teams will be in the area soon to repair some of the damage from on-going vandalism and try and preserve the tree – which is at risk of dying due to the damage is has suffered.

The repair work will include reinstating the garden beds through mulching, installing logs and boulders and planting.

Children should get out and enjoy the beautiful neighbourhood but please don’t damage what we all love.

Council has noted the demand for a pump track in the park but it’s not feasible for this location. There is a pump track coming to the nearby Lions/Norrie Job Park, Coolum Beach.

The waste strategy looks at how we can prevent waste going to landfill and help our region move to a circular economy where waste becomes a resource to be reused again and again. The refresh of the Environment and Liveability Strategy calls for on feedback on proposed changes to Strategic Directions in the Strategy: including action around climate change, incorporating the UN Sustainable Development Goals and our designation as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and further highlighting the importance of greener neighbourhoods, affordable living, 14

accessibility and active transport.

LOCAL UPDATE

A new 15-meter section of pathway on Margaret Street, Coolum Beach, aims to improve accessibility for people in wheelchairs, using assistance aids, and pushing prams. The pathway now connects with existing pathways, making travel easier.

Excitingly, the upgrade to the entrance of Coolum Sports Complex will also commence soon, addressing safety concerns for drivers and pedestrians at the intersection. The upgrade will include improved lighting and realigned utilities, with construction set to begin on August 7. The project is partly funded by the Queensland Government through the South East Queensland Community Stimulus Program. Access to the sports complex will remain open during construction.

Last week, I announced $3,976 to help the Guide Dogs update their Sunshine Coast office. The organisation relies on donations and grants to deliver its wonderful service to the visually impaired and so I am delighted to be able to help.

SUNSHINE COAST VETERAN WELLBEING CENTRE

Last week I invited representatives from local veteran organisations to meet with Shadow Minister for Veteran Affairs Barnaby Joyce to discuss how to provide better support for exservice personnel in our community.

Here on the Sunshine Coast, we have the second biggest population in Australia of veterans and that is why Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace MP and I are calling on the Labor Government to reinstate critical funding for a Veteran Wellbeing Centre to be established here in our community.

FAIRFAX BIGGEST SURVEY

Thank you to everyone who responded to my Biggest Survey. Out of nearly 2,000 responses, it was clear that cost of living pressures are hitting local families hard.

Your responses help me identify local issues and concerns, such as much-needed road and other infrastructure improvements, which helps direct my efforts in Canberra.

A Royal Commission Report into the Robodebt Scheme has been tabled. This report and the issues that it covers are very serious. It’s important that everyone in government learns the lessons and seriously considers the Royal Commission’s recommendations.

Simple way ratepayers can win up to $1000 off their rates bill Rate notices are on their way and there’s an easy way Sunshine Coast ratepayers can put themselves in the running to save up to $1000 off their bill.

And there’s a simple way.

Sunshine Coast Council Outstanding Organisation Portfolio Councillor Ted Hungerford said ratepayers could give themselves a chance to win with just a few simple steps.

“Ratepayers who already receive their rate notices by email are automatically in the running to win,” Cr Hungerford said.

“Ratepayers who still get their rate notices by traditional post also put themselves in the draw by registering for a MyCouncil account or logging in to an existing account and changing their rate notice delivery method to email, before 5pm on Wednesday, August 16.

“You can create your own MyCouncil account on Council’s website and once you’ve done that or logged into your existing account, all you need to do is click on ‘Update your rate notice delivery’ under the Property and Rates section on your MyCouncil dashboard, and change to email.

“Receiving rate notices by email rather than 22

traditional post is more environmentally friendly and registering for a MyCouncil account enables residents to access a wide range of convenient and secure online options.

“You can request services, register pets and business owners can also register to access a range of business services through MyCouncil and your information is only viewable by you.”

You’ll find a step-by-step guide to setting up your MyCouncil account on council’s website.

There is also a step-by-step video to show you how to change your rates delivery method from traditional post to email.

There is a range of convenient online payment options available, including BPAY and by phone on 131 816.

Check your rate notice to see all the ways you can pay.

Council also has a direct debit option, which can be set up to pay rates in full by the due date, to make life easier for busy ratepayers.

To assist with online or over-the-phone payments, property owners will need their payment reference number, found on their rate notice.

CHANGING LIVES THROUGH FOSTER CARE

A PASSIONATE FOSTER CARER PROVIDING SAFE HAVENS FOR CHILDREN IN NEED

From the moment Mel Luck picked up her phone to chat about why she does what she does when it comes to looking after children in need her passion for the cause shone through.

That cause is child protection, and since 2014 Mel has offered emergency and foster care support to children in need. She’s one of 6,000 families in Queensland who work with child protection agencies every day to provide safe havens for children who can no longer live safely in their own family environment for reasons ranging from substance abuse to domestic and sexual violence.

Despite the challenges of this complex area and the stories she has heard from the mouths of the children she has cared for over the years, Mel said since becoming involved in caring, her only regret was that she hadn’t started sooner.

‘Now doing it, it would have been fantastic for my kids to have been involved,’ she said.

Mel has always loved helping children be the best they can, particularly on the hockey field, where she coached for more than 40 years.

Through hockey and her own children, the 24

56-year-old said her house had been full of kids who would gravitate there as a safe place to chat and hang out with their friends. When her children left home, she started to look at how she could help other children in need. ‘My kids are grown, I am single and opening my old Queenslander up to these gorgeous kids has been one of the best decisions of my life,’ Mel said.

‘Over the years it has evolved into accommodating permanent teenagers and providing emergency care for kids who may need a bed for a few days or weeks, to regular respites for kids who all become such a wonderful part of your family. ‘I wouldn’t change my years of fostering for anything in the world. I absolutely love meeting new kids and having the opportunity to welcome them into a warm, safe environment. ‘It’s such a privilege to be able to touch these kids’ lives and hopefully, when they leave, they have a few more life skills to help them along the way.’
