MINGLE RAISES $300K THE INAUGURAL MINGLE WITH THE MAYOR EVENT HELD LAST WEEK AT THE SOFITEL IN NOOSA HAS CLOCKED UP MORE THAN $300,000 IN FUNDS RAISED FOR SUNNYKIDS AND NO MORE FAKE SMILES - TWO CHARITIES THAT PUT THE WELFARE OF CHILDREN FIRST.

The event was run by WomenKind Inc, a not-forprofit association established this year to support women through connection, education, Eastern Beaches News - September 2021

empowerment and fundraising.

About 150 people attended the event which included entertainment by former The Voice contestant Luke Kennedy, and MC work by Kay McGrath.

Funds were raised through raffles and auctions on the night.

FROM THE ED’S DESK SPRING IS COMING!

Winter’s gone, Spring is here, and with it comes a mad month of fun in our house.

It’s birthday season, with two of the four of us in our little family celebrating another year around the sun and Father’s Day on top of that to keep it interesting. It’s also the lead in to school holidays, football and sporting finals and an indicator that the “big term” is on the way for the children and the final push to Christmas for the adults.

For our local small businesses and their staff, anyone who usually travels interstate for work, and parents of school aged children the threat of COVID-19 continues to linger.

It seems to be the number one topic of conversation right now, whether it’s what’s

happening in the rest of the country and the likelihood of more lockdowns here, or who’s getting vaccinated, and who’s not, and why.

Aside from the physical impact on those who have contracted the disease, the mental impact of COVID and all the drama that’s come with it cannot be underestimated.

Living with such uncertainty, the job losses, missing out on milestone events such as weddings and funerals, and the intense pressure right now on rental and housing markets have put a lot of people in some pretty challenging situations.

This September, more than ever before, it seems to make good sense that we should heed the message of R U OK Day and check in on our friends and family to make sure they are “really” ok. For a few tips on asking those questions, see the story on page 3. Geoff

R U Ok Day community ambassador Justin Geange, who is also a Mates in Construction Field Officer, said it was really important to dig deep when talking to people to understand whether they were “really” ok.

Justin said he’d found staying connected to people, checking in, grabbing a coffee with them and creating meaningful moments had helped him to help others find help and avoid the risk of suicide. He said listening to understand, not to respond helped, as did being aware of stressors such as job loss or the loss of a loved one.

Justin said the aim was to support the

person in need, to guide them to seek advice, to stand with them on the journey, and to check in with them along the way to make sure they were still ok.

On the Sunshine Coast, males account for four out of five reported suicides with the majority aged between 40 to 60 years.

The hunt for other ways to help those at risk continues too. At the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Thompson Institute scientists are testing the use of oral ketamine as part of a treatment for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Rotary Noosa Daybreak, Australian Rotary Health Research Foundation and the University of the Sunshine Coast are funding a Doctoral Student for the research.

STORMWATER PETITION GATHERS SUPPORT MORE THAN 900 PEOPLE HAVE SIGNED A PETITION BY EASTERN BEACHES PROTECTION ASSOCIATION ASKING COUNCIL TO TAKE ACTION ON STORMWATER RUN OFF.

EBPA spokesperson Minna Knight said the petition was focused on fixing erosion issues of local dunes caused by stormwater run off.

EPBA was created in response to concerns over Noosa Council’s proposed Coastal Hazards Adaptation Program.

NOOSA LIONS STRIVE TO SERVE

BY FIONA EWINGTON ONE OF NOOSA’S FAVOURITE LOCATIONS IS THE NOOSA LIONS PARK ON NOOSA PARADE.

It serves as a wonderful riverside space, for picnics and play as well as hosting some of Noosa’s finest events.

Run by the council but overseen by The Noosa Lions Club, it is hard to believe that this flat green lawn was once a mangrove swamp, serving as a thoroughfare for the coal that was once mined in the area.

It came to be associated with the Noosa Heads Lions Club because of the work carried out by its members who transformed the ground to its present glory.

The Park serves as a terrific fundraiser during the busy holidays providing a safe place for visitor parking as volunteers from the club dedicate their time to run this efficient service placing funds raised back into the community to help those in need.

Raising funds for numerous non-for-profit organisations and causes, through several exciting and fun engagements, including the traditional sausage sizzle, makes up a large part of being a Lions Club Volunteer, but there is a wider range and more diverse role that members undertake too.

One such time was during the in 2019 bushfires where members of the Noosa Heads Lions Club helped families who were evacuated from their houses seek shelter at The J, while firefighters fought to save their homes and their possessions.

“It was a frightening time for so many,” explains Graham Esdale who was one of the first to lend a hand.

“The J served as a refuge and myself and other lions clubs members came to help” Graham continues.

“It was more than simply providing a mattress and a meal, our role was to 6

provide comfort to those traumatised by the devastation around them, whilst they waited anxiously for news of whether their belongings, houses and pets were to be saved.”

Whilst the Noosa Heads Lions Club will be celebrating 50 years of local community engagement in 2024, it is a small part of the Australian Lions Club who is one of the largest community service providers in Australia and is involved in a diverse range of exciting initiatives throughout our country’s communities. Teams of dedicated volunteers have been serving their communities for over 75 years.

“We’re always looking for volunteers to join our club. As we welcome many new people arriving in town, we are hoping we will receive a revival in membership,” Graham said.

“With a natural drop off due to the progression of life we are hoping for some younger folk to come and join our team.

“It’s the most rewarding thing you can do.”

PARLIAMENTARY SITTING NEARS SPRING IS HERE

Welcome to Spring everyone!

Longer and warmer days, the joy of blooms and cross fingers, less Covid chaos.

These past lockdowns were seriously hard for our business’s, staff and community.

Our advocacies on several issues to the QLD Small Business Commissioner and the Premier saw both good and not so good news.

Welcomed was the COVID-19 Business Support Grants including for sole traders and progress on insurances, however there are still ‘gaps’ which we have gone back to Minister Farmer with CC’s to the Premier and Treasurer on businesses ineligible for current funding support.

Thank you to all who that have assisted in this.

This meeting ‘brainstormed’ about what a taskforce would look like, and the key messages were community driven, with unity between all levels of government.

TRANSPORT FUNDING

As reported previously, Government has allocated funding in this year’s Budget towards community transport to address the gaps we had identified and advocated about.

The new Community Transport Program supports residents who are not eligible for other subsidisation to access medical appointments, with information at www. chde.qld.gov.au/about/initiatives/ community-transport-program.

Should any of the existing subsidies, extended PTSS mapping or this new program not be able to assist, we shall continue our pilot Be: Noosa Connect-SCUH Transport until we have ascertained that no one else remains stranded in the system.

September school holidays are just a few weeks away, and I’d like to thank all the teachers in Noosa communities who have worked hard this term, particularly throughout the challenges posed by the recent local lockdown, to ensure their students continue to get the best possible education.

School holidays are traditionally a busy time on our roads as more people head to Noosa, Teewah, Rainbow Beach and other coastal areas of our beautiful region.

Whether you’re travelling as well, or staying close to home, I encourage all road users to be patient, to be mindful of road and weather conditions, avoid distractions, follow the speed limit and wear a seatbelt Driving responsibly saves lives.

COVID UPDATE

While the impacts of the New South Wales and Victorian lockdowns are still creating uncertainty for the tourism market, Treasurer Josh Frydenberg recently announced a new business assistance package that is available to all businesses in Queensland impacted by lockdown that employ staff and have suffered a downturn of 30 per cent or more.

The 2021 COVID-19 Business Support package is now open and it builds on the

economic support the Morrison Government has provided Queensland households and businesses during the pandemic.

August has been a trying month for many with the lockdowns that have taken place.

This has affected everyone, but it is great to see the majority of the community following the Health Directives.

Our calls for service in relation to COVID-19 related tasks have increased immensely.

Police attended 20 calls for service in the Eastern Beaches area. Police also dealt with a further 53 matters, 22 of which were traffic matters. This is disappointing to see as road safety week ran from the 16th to the 20th August.

CHAPPY’S CORNER WITH CHAPLAIN MARK HORSFALL

LIVING WITH DISAPPOINTMENT ON SUNDAY THE 1ST OF AUGUST I WAS SUPPOSED TO HOLD MY ANNUAL CONCERT FUNDRAISER FOR CHAPLAINCY.

I was at the shops the morning before when the Music Director called me to tell me of the impending lockdown.

To say that we were both extremely disappointed at having to cancel the concert would be an understatement.

Over the last month I have talked to many like me who have had to deal with the disappointment of cancelling holidays, weddings and events.

Disappointment is a strong emotion often not talked about and can hover at the front of your mind and niggle at the back bringing you a grey perspective on life.

Here are a few tips to overcome it.

1. LET IT OUT

Speak to a friend, family member, or even a therapist about how the disappointment has affected you.

Too often (particularly men) we just suppress and bottle our feelings.

Writing or even drawing in a journal can be a great tool to let out our feelings as well.

It is important to give yourself some time to feel and express your disappointment.

3.HAVE SOME PERSPECTIVE.

It can feel like the end of the world when you experience disappointment.

Having a broader perspective than your own view on a situation can alleviate the power disappointment holds.

Being open to talking and listening to others can help you gain a larger view perspective 4. LIVE IN THE MOMENT

The disappointment you may have could be a result of something that is totally out of your control, like Covid.

Accept it and focus on what you can do today.

Be present in what you have in front of you now and not caught up in the hangups of the past.

5. EVALUATE YOUR EXPECTATIONS

Disappointment can be a result of unrealistic expectations we have of ourselves and others.

Ask yourself, will this matter in a month, 6 months or a year’s time?

Don’t make a mountain out of a molehill, rather be flexible enough to adjust your expectations.

2. DON’T BROOD, RATHER MOVE ON

Don’t get trapped in your disappointment but come to terms with the circumstances and move forward.

I have come across many people who have let the past severely restrict and limited their future.

Winston Churchill said, “Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm”.

If you’re thinking of introducing your child to lifesaving, then Junior Activities (Nippers) is for you.

Lifesaving is something for the whole family to get involved in and there are many supporting roles that you can play as a parent.

WATCH OUT - MAGPIES ARE OUT! IT’S MAGPIE SEASON AND TIME TO TAKE CARE AROUND THEIR NESTS.

Sunshine Coast Council Natural Areas Conservation Officer Tyron de Kauwe said not all magpies swoop.

“Magpies are pretty amazing birds and in fact only 10 per cent of breeding males will actually swoop,” Mr de Kauwe said. “Magpies will often stay in one area for up to 20 years and can identify individuals by their facial features, even recognising all the people in their neighbourhood.

“They are also extraordinary parents, looking after their young for up to two years.”

Mr de Kauwe offered the following tips on staying safe: “Swooping begins once the eggs are hatched and ends once the chicks have left the nest, which is about six to eight weeks,” Mr de Kauwe said. “When you see male magpies defending their territory, understand they are merely defending their young.

“Move quickly through the area but do not run. Wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses or use an umbrella. Dismount and walk your bike and, where possible, walk in groups – or avoid the area altogether. Don’t act aggressively towards them as they have a very long memory, and this will just encourage further defensive behaviour in the future.”
