The Peregian Project, where customers are presented a bingo card and encouraged to have it stamped at least 10 times to go in the draw for three prizes of a $500 Peregian voucher, was created by Sharlene McKenna from Pizzami and Georgie Lazarus of Goldie and the Green Grocer at Peregian Breeze.

Bar, Indique Indian, Peregian Pantry, Coconut Kulture, Outer Square, Pool Cafe Peregian Springs, Peregian Beach Hotel, Baked Poetry Cafe and Hand of Fatima Cafe.

“Our community has responded really well to the initiative and we have had a lot of positive feedback about it being a great way to encourage ‘shop local’,” the duo said. “ It has also been lovely to hear of people getting out and trying new places.”

The pair said they were hoping to have at least 60 entries in the draw based on uptake so far.

If they were to do it again in the future, they said it would go for longer, with earlier pre-promotion.

FROM THE ED’S DESK WHAT HAPPENED TO SEPTEMBER!

It feels like I’ve looked up and the month has simply disappeared.

As we race off to print for this October edition the results of the recent fundraising effort by the team at Peregian Family and Friends have come through showing that our community dug deep and generated more than $55,000 for the local surf club through a night of fun under the stars at the Peregian Gala held in Peregian Park on September 11.

The money raised to go towards the future re-building of the Peregian Surf Club which is working hard to become its own independent entity in 2022 after several years of rebuilding patrolling and nippers numbers with the backing of Noosa Heads Surf Club.

More than 160 people attended the event which also reflected on the second anniversary of the bushfires which hit our patch in 2019.

Judging by the increased nipper numbers and the club’s success in gathering a volunteer army to patrol our beaches from September to May each year, there is a demand in the community for our own surf life saving club.

Returning some sort of supporters’ club and re-activating the old clubhouse as a venue open to the general public that is able to generate funds for equipment and supplies to support the active lifesavers is one of the biggest challenges the new club faces.

Having spent many nights with my own young family enjoying the old club before it shut in 2014, I hope others get the same opportunities I had. Have a great month, Geoff

SERVING UP A DECADE OF ACES

PEREGIAN TENNIS CLUB THIS MONTH PAID TRIBUTE TO THEIR PRESIDENT OF THE PAST 10 YEARS, KIM LAHEY, WHO IS TAKING A BREAK FROM COMMITTEE LIFE.

Kim, who has been involved with the club for at least 20 years after moving to Peregian from Brisbane with her, then, young family, said it had been a rewarding journey.

At the club’s AGM Kim described the Peregian Beach Community Kindy and Peregian Tennis Club as an “oasis of social community connection” and said it was natural for her to want to give back to both organisations over the years.

Other highlights included seeing little children take to tennis “like ducks to water” or hearing members say how much they love the vibe at the club.

Over her time as president Kim oversaw more than $200,000 worth of facility upgrades and represented the club at countless meetings and functions.

(Secretary), Danny Tylim and Andrew Veale, saying that the club was in a great position in 2021, with record membership and a 40-year track record of diligent saving.

She said the club’s success came down to a seamless work partnership between the committee and the court manager.

Court manager Andrew Veale told members at the AGM that the club had been lucky to have Kim fighting for it.

“A very big thank you to our president Kim for all her strategic planning and implementation of club upgrades and grants over many years.

“She is highly effective in getting tasks done and her presence on the committee will be greatly missed.”

“It is little clubs like ours who welcome everyone of all ages and stages, that really made a difference to people when they move to the area.”

1. Swim Between the Red and Yellow Flags The flags show that there is a lifesaving patrol on the beach, in an area that’s best for swimming and is being supervised.

2 Read the Safety Signs Before you go onto the beach be sure to read the safety signs. This will ensure you’re aware of any warnings.

3 Ask a Lifesaver for Safety Advice Lifesavers are trained knowledgeable about their local beach. Feel free to ask them about the ocean conditions.

4 Swim with a Friend This is a fun way to enjoy your time at the beach and sensible. Being with another

person allows you to keep an eye out for each other.

5 If You Need Help, Stay Calm and Attract Attention If you are uncomfortable with the ocean’s conditions and worried about getting back to the beach, relax. Wave one hand above your head from side to side for a lifesaver to see you and come to help. To conserve energy you can float on your back.

COUNT THE BIRDS FOR A GOOD CAUSE BIRDLIFE AUSTRALIA IS CALLING ON THE NEXT GENERATION OF BIRD LOVERS AND THEIR PARENTS TO GET INVOLVED IN THIS YEAR’S AUSSIE BACKYARD BIRD COUNT.

The Aussie Backyard Bird Count, from October 18 to 24, aims to engage school communities in the natural world while getting to know the birds in their local area, through participation in a simple, fun, activity that can be done anywhere.

BirdLife Australia’s Sean Dooley said the event encouraged school children to spend 20 minutes in their favourite outdoor space 4

recording the birds they see and reporting on them.

Mr Dooley said the annual count provided an opportunity to gain a more detailed picture of what birds are living where and how our native birds are faring. Last year 4.6million birds were counted in seven days.

The good news for those interested in the project is that there are also more than $5,000 worth of prizes being given away as part of this year’s count.

COUNCIL NEWS WITH NOOSA MAYOR CLARE STEWART

COUNCIL JOINS MAYORAL GROUP COUNCIL OF MAYORS

Big news this week with a resolution by Council to apply to join the Southeast Queensland Council of Mayors.

SEQ Council of Mayors have done a tremendous job on a number of matters in recent years, including playing a pivotal role in securing the Olympic Games.

This Games has the potential to accelerate investment in transport, infrastructure, tourism and so much more across the southeast and it’s time Noosa supported the work of the Council of Mayors.

Previous Noosa Councils decided not to be part of the SEQ Council of Mayors and that was their choice, but we consider collaboration and robust dialogue with other councils as vital.

We need to work as one SEQ region to deliver better outcomes for the business sector and wider community.

FREE HOLIDAY BUSES ARE BACK

Good news abounds with the ‘Go Noosa Free Holiday Buses’ which will be back for Christmas 2021 and Easter 2022.

Subject to TransLink approvals, travel will be free on TransLink buses servicing Cooroy, Cooran and Pomona, Sunshine Beach, Sunrise Beach, Peregian Beach, Noosa Parklands, Tewantin and Noosa Civic.

IGA FOR SUNRISE SHOPS

An IGA Supermarket looks set to be the new anchor tenant at Sunrise Beach Shopping centre for 10 years, with a further five-year option.

The flagship tenancy is a major coup for the Council-owned shopping village, offering a $130,000 annual return to ratepayers.

Council will expand the vacant site to provide the necessary space for the proposed

operator.

The lease agreement will include expansion of the current 305m2 site to approximately 500m2.

The capital expenditure is a good investment for the community.

IGA provides enormous benefits to local residents and would generate a steady income for council over the next 10 to 15 years. The new tenant will maximise the potential of the site.

BUILDING CONTINUES ON COMMUNITY HOUSE

Well it is full steam ahead for the Peregian Beach Community House.

The windows and frames are in place, the internal fit out is well under way and landscaping starts next month.

Substantial completion is anticipated in the next four weeks.

This will provide Peregian with a larger more fit-for-purpose community house building.

It will enable the Digital Hub to expand into the old community house building.

The Digital Hub has been successful and has filled the capacity of the existing building so the future expansion will provide an opportunity to create a special space that meets the niche needs of exciting new areas such as our Firetech programme.

greenlight for two new ‘tiny homes’ on Council land at Tewantin to help support young people transitioning from crisis accommodation to independent living.

Council is pleased to assist the Youturn project with land for the tiny homes at Earl Street, between Youturn’s premises and Tait Duke Cottage.

If successful, the three-year pilot program could become a model for other councils that are facing similar housing issues.

It’s a tangible solution to homelessness and it’s an incredibly important initiative and one which all Councillors are fully supportive of.

LAWS PASS FOR ASSISTED DYING THE MONTH THAT WAS

Another month of extremes, from lighthearted and joyful community moments to the serious contemplation of information shared by speakers at the Peregian Beach Community Association’s Code Red event.

This included what we can do as part of reducing our emissions with ‘minimalism’ very much a focus.

Professor Ian Lowe gave the us the ‘low down’ (no pun!!) on the science and data and implications of the IPCC report, with our very own Jenna and Madeline from St Teresa’s Catholic College sharing their research and questions as to why we are not progressing at the speed needed.

That it takes over 3000 litres of water in the making of a pair of jeans is one example of why preloved items are a must for our wardrobes!

VOLUNTARY ASSISTED DYING LAWS PASSED IN PARLIAMENT

It was an emotional week in Parliament with the debate on the Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill (VAD) 2021.

This has been a long journey for so many, and I had asked throughout that respect and compassion for all be demonstrated and was thankful that this also extended into Chamber.

With polls and surveys showing overwhelming support in our electorate and across QLD, the extensive research, consultation and reviews undertaken, as well the work over three years by two separate Health Committee’s, the right to access choice for those who seek and qualify under very strict criteria was voted in 61 to 30.

As submitted by those both ‘for’ and ‘against’ - increased funding for palliative care from the day of a terminal diagnosis must be a priority.

Dips can force the ball up in the socket and pinch the nearby bursa and tendons. This is a common way of injuring the rotator cuff tendons! Tricep pull downs are a safer way of exercising the bingo wingswithout potentially damaging the shoulder.

Lumbar disc injuries with Dead Lifts! It can be difficult to perform a deadlift with good technique. If your hamstrings are tight, you can increase the risk of lumbar disc overload. If you’re prone to lower back pain, try squats instead of deadlifts, which is great way of improving

strength- without the risk to your lower back!

Neck and Shoulder Pain with Kettle bell swings! Kettle bells are a great functional exercise!

TIGERS TEAM MAKES IT A DOUBLE

BY FIONA EWINGTON NOOSA TIGERS WOMEN’S AFL SENIOR TEAM HAS TOPPED THE TABLE FOR THE SECOND YEAR IN A ROW, BEATING IPSWICH EAGLES IN THE QFAW NORTH DIVISION 2 GRAND FINAL ON SEPTEMBER 4.

The women’s team is less than two years old, starting out in March 2020 just at COVID struck.

Despite the challenges, this team of strong, passionate, women have not only pioneered the way for women’s sport but have seen a huge rise in girls joining the club and competing.

“This team is like my extended family,” player Shanon Hill said.

“Sport, exercise and team bonding, there’s nothing better.

“You can’t create it synthetically or replicate it through chemicals, it is the very best natural high.”

Speaking to media after the latest win, head coach Graham Burgen said the second win could put the team in the running to step up to QAFLW level next year, although that came with its own challenges around time 12

commitments and travel for team members.

With the success of the women’s side of the club and the increase in numbers has come greater pressure on equipment and changing room facilities, prompting the team to step up its fundraising efforts off the field to help cover the increased costs.

Their next fundraising effort takes the form of volunteering at local triathlons for additional funding, including the upcoming Noosa Triathlon.

“You’ll see us outside the AFL ground handing out water to the athletes at the Noosa Triathlon.” Shanon said.

“Come and join us!”

Noosa’s sporting community is immensely proud of these committed, gutsy girls and how far the Noosa Tigers Women’s team have come in such a short time.

They have beaten established teams from all over South East Queensland to become champions and whilst it’s endearing for some of the player’s children to wear their Mum’s medals with pride to daycare and school, our community will benefit for years to come because of these girls’ commitment, vibe and drive to encourage equality in team sports.

TRI IGNITES COMMUNITY SPIRIT AFTER A YEAR’S HIATUS DUE TO COVID, THE NOOSA TRIATHLON IS BACK ON FROM 27-31 OCTOBER 2021 BRINGING ENTHUSIASTIC SWIMMERS, CYCLISTS AND RUNNERS TOGETHER TO ENJOY NOOSA’S ICONIC ENDURANCE SPORTING EVENT.

But it is not just triathletes who are attracted to Noosa’s multi-sport fitness challenge, with the local community getting behind the event by volunteering and raising funds for their independent causes.

Noosa Triathlon provides a great fundraising opportunity, supporting local schools, sports clubs, church groups and many community groups.

“We love being part of the Tri” says Sue Griffiths, who along with her group from Noosaville View Club raises funds for The Smith Family’s Learning For Life students.

“Our members enjoy the social element.”

The Noosa Men’s Shed play a huge part, by volunteering on multiple days raising funds for their “Shedders” which also encourages their members to keep active and involved.

It not only helps their physical health but their mental health too.

“We enjoy checking in the athletes before their race,” said Jerome Stuart.

“We use new technology for this role which keeps us stimulated.”

Some groups and indeed some individual volunteers have been involved with the triathlon for over 30 years.

Ron Acutt has volunteered as an individual for over 30 years and is also one of Noosa’s longest serving triathletes, hoping to complete his 36th race this year.

Joy Van Zetten from Noosa Netball Club has earned herself a plaque in Noosa’s Walk of Fame on Noosa Parade as the longest serving Noosa Triathlon volunteer.

are lined up ready for the day ahead, closely guarded by a pack of security dogs until the early hours when athletes arrive in the dark preparing themselves for the race ahead as the sun rises and the beach glistens.

There is a free shuttle bus service to the festival village in Hastings St which runs all week and is the best way for volunteers to get to their location.

Noosa Triathlon is a local event where everyone can take part.

Volunteers receive a unique event T-shirt which also serves as way of receiving discounts at local restaurants.

“We love supporting the volunteers,” said Jarrad Hoffman from Noosa’s Olakino.

“As an experienced athlete I know how valuable and supportive the volunteers are, cheering us on, providing drinks at aid stations and hosing us down at the finish line.”

Volunteering at Noosa Triathlon provides anyone who is keen to be involved, the best seats in the house.

“I love that the athletes thank us” chuckles Audra Kearney from Sunshine Coast Dragons Abreast, who is in the running for Australia’s Volunteer of the Year Award.

Raising funds and having fun whilst giving something back makes volunteering at the Noosa Triathlon a great opportunity for locals and local groups.

CHAPPY’S CORNER WITH CHAPLAIN MARK HORSFALL

TIPS FOR TALKING WITH TEENS I WAS CAMPING ON THE WEEKEND AND WAS TRYING TO HAVE A CONVERSATION WITH MY 14-YEAROLD NIECE.

I would have had more luck getting a tree to talk to me that night. Talking to teenagers is a common challenge many of us parents can share. Adolescence can be a perplexing, challenging, confusing and emotional time of life. It is a time where they develop their independence, develop who they are and figure out where they fit in the world.

All of this can make having conversations with them very challenging.

Here are a few tips that may help you have better conversations: Bridge the Gap – Teenagers often feel misunderstood and think that their parents have no idea what it’s like to be a teenager.

Try putting your opinions, feelings and views to the side and help them discover their values and beliefs.

Avoid telling them how you think they should think and feel.

Your teenager probably won’t be looking for you to fix or solve problems.

Instead help them move towards finding a resolution themselves.

Validate your teenager – Can you remember what it was like to be one? If you can, it will help you relate better, understand and see things from their perspective.

If they feel like they have been heard and

validated, then they will be more likely to open up more. Acknowledging their feelings and needs can go a long way to establishing connection with them.

Choose your time – When your teenager is displaying lots of emotion then that is not going to be a productive time to try and have a rational conversation.

Try to avoid bringing up an important conversation when they’re about to walk out the door or are watching their favourite show.

It might be helpful to even set a time that all parties agree on (like an appointment) when important conversations need to be had.

Ask open ended questions – Asking the right questions is an art and takes practice.

Some good questions to ask are: • How did that make you feel?

• What are your thoughts about this?

• What do you think is the best thing to do?

• What can I do to help?

Try to stay away from yes and no answer questions.

Always remember if you struggle, you’re not alone. They will grow out of it and with some work and effort, you can get them to talk.

Home Truths will be the focus of a Literary Lunch to be held at Noosa Waterfront Restaurant on Friday, October 15 from Noon, hosted by Annie’s Books of Peregian Beach.
