By FIONA EWINGTON MANY OF US WILL HAVE WITNESSED THE BUZZ, EXCITEMENT AND SHEER ATHLETICISM FROM THIS YEAR’S GARMIN NOOSA TRIATHLON MULTISPORT FESTIVAL RECENTLY, AS OVER 7,000 ATHLETES CAME TO TEST THEIR ENDURANCE ABILITIES AT THE GREATEST TRIATHLON IN THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE.

overflowing with athletes and their friends and families.

Over 800 local volunteers raised approx $33,000 for local organisations and with festival events including, The Asics Breakfast Fun Run, 2XU Ocean Swim, Garth Prowd Ride, Superkids and Tingirana Noosa Special Tri, there was something for everyone to compete in.

In addition, every event participant donated $1 to Trees for Tourism, an environmental sustainability initiative by Tourism Noosa in partnership with Noosa & District Landcare.

TREES FOR TOURISM...

FROM PAGE 1 Noosa Triathlon event organisers have assisted in planting over 5,800 trees, (along with other event organisers) and the new woodlands are designed to help projects such as the Noosa Trail Network rehabilitation program by creating shade, erosion prevention, improving wildlife habitat and helping with carbon emission reduction.

The brains behind the enterprise is Juanita Terry-Bloomfield, Head of Tourism Sustainability & Program Design Tourism Noosa which started in 2019. Staff from Noosa Triathlon planted over 500 trees in one morning, which have since become affectionally known as the Noosa Triathlon Forest. More recently the team along with volunteers from Noosa Ultra Trail, Plastic Free Noosa and an over 50’s touring holiday from Brisbane planted a further 700 trees.

But it’s not just event organisers and invited guests who can be part of this sustainability program, with the launch of Tourism Noosa’s “Tread Lightly” scheme in November in association with Noosa & District Landcare, educating volunteer tree planters in growing

Noosa was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2007 and the biosphere recognition was reconfirmed in 2018.

The definition of a biosphere being an internationally designated and protected area that demonstrates a balanced relationship between people and nature.

NEW IGA IS A WELCOME BOOST

THE SECRET’S FINALLY OUT AS TO WHAT WILL BE HAPPENING TO THE VACANT RETAIL OUTLET AT SUNRISE BEACH SHOPS IN GRASSTREE COURT.

A family run Local Grocer, IGA will be open for business from November 9, 2022, with trading hours set to be 6am – 8pm, 7 days a week.

For locals who have been longing for this empty space to bring some much-needed atmosphere back to the parade of shops, a local IGA gets the thumbs up.

With many changes in the area in recent months with the new infrastructure making way for new housing, the Save The Sunrise Glossies Campaign and the loss of the local butcher, residents and local businesses are looking forward to welcoming the new retail outlet.

Todd and Rachael O’Reilly, experienced in local IGA stores with Sunrise Beach being their fourth project, have been looking forward to bringing their knowledge and charm to the area for over three years.

“Our family kept growing” says Todd, “So taking on a new store at the same time as a new baby was the wrong timing.”

However, the timing now is just right as we stride into the holiday season and with our state borders open for the first time in two years, our seaside town is set to bring visitors and locals back to Grasstree Court.

With the big supermarket chains and online shopping taking on most of the market, our new IGA will have a basic range and a bit of everything to assist consumers either to stock up or last-minute shop, with fresh produce and meats, hot chooks, salads and readymade meals designed for everyone’s convenience.

Council has launched a new Living Well program that offers free and low-cost access to a range of classes.

This is the first Permanent Living Well Program Council has offered the community and we are all incredibly proud of it. The initiative takes a holistic approach to addressing a range of health dimensions including physical, social, mental and spiritual health. Speaking of community, our brand new Peregian Beach Community House is now open. It offers multi-functional spaces, three hire rooms, landscaped greenspace and purpose-built facilities to assist services that help disadvantaged residents HAZARD MAPPING TECHNOLOGY

Noosa Council is thrilled to become the first Qld Council to use new interactive 3D hazard mapping technology to educate locals on how disaster events such as bushfires could personally impact them, and to show exactly how a bushfire might behave if it unfolds in their immediate area.

Knowing the risks bushfires pose to an immediate neighbourhood will help locals to be prepared.

The technology, known as Simtable, uses a projector to overlay hazard projections over local mapping and terrain in 3D. The new tech is part of Council’s ongoing effort to reduce the shire’s bushfire risk and make the community more resilient. Over 8

the past two years we have invested significantly in measures aimed at preventing a repeat of the 2019 fires, including more controlled burns, greater trail maintenance and appointment of an in-house officer to oversee local hazard reduction efforts.

Education is also very important if we are to be disaster ready so I would encourage residents to attend the community sessions once finalised so you can get to know your own risk, which will help inform household emergency plans.

Speaking of disaster resilience, with the La Nina weather conditions hanging around, it’s a timely reminder for residents to familiarise themselves with Council’s Disaster Dashboard. The Disaster Dashboard provides up-to-date information on weather warnings, road closures and power outages. SES TEAMS ARE KEEPING US SAFE

IT’S WITHOUT DOUBT THAT WHEN IN DANGER, WE RELY ON OTHERS TO HELP, AND THE QUEENSLAND SES STATE EMERGENCY SERVICES ARE A GROUP OF SKILFULLY TRAINED VOLUNTEER WORKERS WHO PUT THEMSELVES IN TRICKY SITUATIONS TO HELP US IN OUR TIME OF NEED.

With our recent unprecedented weather events during last summer’s La Nina resulting in heavy rainfall to our region it is thanks to our SES Noosa Unit that no lives were lost.

Their role during the flood disaster management was assisting with the safe and efficient evacuation of those who were stranded in flooded areas, removing obstructions such as fallen trees from properties as well as providing first aid at an advanced level until professional first aid arrived.

“We are always prepared, standing by 24/7 to respond to emergencies” Warren Kuskopf, Local Controller, Noosa Unit tells us.

“But this summer found our members unusually stretched for a much longer period.

“The first heavy rainfall in December was challenging due to general debris is drains and gutters leading to flooding but in February though most of the drainage was clear, the sheer volume of rain that fell, coupled with king tides meant rivers burst their banks, resulting in homes and businesses under water and without power”.

Some of the most demanding aspects of the role at SES Noosa Unit is not actually assisting at the front line it is foreseeing and prioritising the rescue needs over the oncoming dangers.

The Queensland SES is made up of more than 300 volunteer groups across the state with each shire looking after its own unit.

They can also be one of the first response teams to search and rescue missing persons 10

and members can be deployed to assist in any area not just in Queensland if situations require additional teams which can also include helping the Rural Fire Services.

But their role in our community goes much wider than being our first responders, as seen during the COVID vaccination role out where there was a team from our Noosa Unit assisting with the traffic control as frustrated and anxious residents and visitors queued to be tested and or vaccinated.

As our SES members are unpaid workers, the personal rewards from saving lives or calming anxious evacuees is greater than monetary value.

The SES Noosa Unit are often at social gatherings such as markets and sporting events and whether shaking a bucket for loose change or assisting with carparking, the general public are very generous and will insist on presenting our crews with a healthy donation. There are also inhouse rewards for members who go over and above expectations.

With another La Nina predicted there is little we can do to stop the rain but there is a lot we can do to keep ourselves out of danger.

SES volunteers come from all walks of life.

DO YOU KNOW A FRIENDLY DOG?

By Graeme Wilson DO YOU HAVE A FRIENDLY DOG WHO IS GOOD WITH CHILDREN AND LOVES TO LISTEN?

If so, you and your four-legged friend could be just what local Story Dogs coordinator Mel Jones is looking for.

Story Dogs is a not-for-profit charity operating in 389 schools Australia wide, helping over 2800 students each week to develop literacy and a love of reading.

Mel is signing up volunteers to help on the Sunshine Coast from the start of the new school year in 2023.

The commitment is around two hours each week, during school terms, with you and your dog visiting a nearby primary school to work, one-on-one, with up to six Year 2 children who need help with reading.

Each child spends 20 minutes reading to your dog while you assist with any challenges they have working through an age-appropriate book.

Based on a successful American literacy program, Story Dogs provides a safe and relaxed environment where the children don’t feel judged. Mel is one of a number of coordinators for the Sunshine Coast region, with her area stretching from Maroochydore to Peregian Springs.

In partnership with her furry friend Rhett, Mel has been volunteering at Coolum and Pacific Paradise State Schools for the past two years, and has now taken on the local coordinator role as well.

Her own experience as a volunteer has been nothing but positive.

“I just think learning to read is such a fundamental thing – if you can't read, you can't learn,” Mel said. “These kids can start off at the beginning of the year quite hesitant and a little embarrassed that they’re not good readers, and then to see them picking 12

it up and becoming more confident is very rewarding.”

To become part of the Story Dogs team, you and your pet just need to meet a few basic requirements.

Dog owners must apply for a Blue Card to allow them to work with children, and the dogs are assessed to ensure they’re also suitable for the role.

“It's not at all onerous – they just need to be up to date with their vaccinations, be registered and then it’s a simple 20-minute assessment to make sure the dog is friendly, can cope with noise, and is reasonably well behaved,” Mel said.

And dogs don’t have to be of the small and fluffy variety to make the Story Dogs team.

From page 12 “We have a range of dogs from very small to massive,” Mel said.

“We’ve got poodles and we’ve got chihuahuas, but we’ve also got someone with a Bull Arab that they take into the school.”

In a perfect world, volunteers would be available every week for the entire school year, but Mel’s realistic enough to know that’s unlikely for everyone.

“It’s volunteer work so it’s not like you have to be locked in,” Mel said.

"If you need to go away to travel for a while, that’s fine. When you return, you can just pick up where you left off.”

Experience has shown it takes about six weeks to get the owner/dog ready to start working with children, so the goal is to have a new group of volunteers trained up for Term 1.

“And then it's all about slowly helping the kids to be more confident,” Mel said.

“They don't feel judged if they're sitting there reading to a dog. It's a safe, quiet space where nothing’s rushed.”

Instead of children viewing it as embarrassing, or punishment because they're not a good reader, it's instead seen as an exciting part of their schooling.

“All the kids want to go out with the Story Dog when we collect someone from the classroom,” Mel said.

“And a child that I'm taking out goes, ‘no, it's only for special people’. So it's nice that they think that it’s a positive, rather than some kind of punishment for not being able to read.”

While the dogs obviously have a crucial role to play, the human touch from the volunteers is equally important.

“It could be just holding the book while the child pats the dog, or helping them with word sounds they're not comfortable with,” Mel said. "Lots of positive reinforcement, encouragement, getting them to try things – having a shot at a word they may not know.”

And it's not always the case that the children simply aren't good readers.

“It could just be a confidence thing,” Mel said. “Sometimes a child is a reasonably good reader for their age, but just doesn't have the confidence to read out loud. So it's developing that a little bit more.”

Currently Mel has four state schools in her area signed up to the Story Dogs program (Maroochydore, Bli Bli, Pacific Paradise and Coolum), with some already having multiple volunteers.

At Coolum State School, for example, Mel attends on Tuesdays, while two other pairings cover Wednesdays and Fridays.

As new volunteers come forward, Mel will contact their local schools to outline the Story Dogs program and all it has to offer, with plenty of other schools on the Coast ready and willing to talk about their own success stories.
