Congratulations to the businesses and locals who came out to support them at Peregian Beach over Easter for the Village Vibes Festival. It was great to see the square buzzing for the better part of two weeks with something just a little out of the ordinary. By all accounts the event was a hit!

If the battle for car parks and busy beaches from Sunshine Beach to Peregian Beach is a guide, it seems the attraction of a relatively safe holiday break away from life as normal, and of course our amazing scenery, people and businesses, was just what the tourists were after which is good news for the local economy and small businesses like those who support this publication every month (thanks to all of you - we’re up to Edition number 9!)

In this month’s edition we feature some of our young local music and artistic talent, take a look at what’s on for Volunteer Week and hear from our civic leaders about what’s next on their agendas.

There’s some good news in there for Sunrise Beach residents, with a new shop coming to their local shopping centre soon - and for those concerned about the Coastal Hazards Adaptation Plan and Council’s response, an extra extension of time for reporting back to the State Government will be welcomed.

The issue of development, or in this case, the lack of development, makes an appearance.

The owners of the old family grocer site, which has been sitting abandoned since November 2018, are taking Council to Court in a bid to be granted an extension of currency for plans first lodged in 2012. Enjoy the read, Geoff.

SUNRISE SINGER HITS THE CHART BUDDING COUNTRY POP STAR SARI ABBOTT LAUNCHED HERSELF INTO MAY WITH THE RELEASE OF HER THIRD SINGLE - ON MY MIND. Sari, who studies at St Teresa’s Catholic College, is a singer songwriter on the rise.

Already one of her singles has hit the top 3 in the Australian Music Radio Airplay Project charts, bringing her to the attention of radio producers around the country.

She’s slotted in to perform at this year’s Gympie Muster and the Caloundra Music Festival and has plans to release an EP later this year whilst finishing her Year 12 studies.

Her wins so far have included a Top 10 finish in the 2019 Gympie Muster Talent Search, Runner Up in the national singing competition Take the Mic 2020 and Runner Up in Sea FM’s Big Break 2020.

CELEBRATING OUR VOLUNTEERS

VOLUNTEERS. WITHOUT THEM, MANY OF OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY GROUPS SIMPLY COULD NOT SERVE THE PEOPLE THEY ARE THERE TO HELP.

As we head into May Volunteering Australia has begun to promote National Volunteer Week from May 17 to 23, sharing the message of volunteering and inviting us all to celebrate the six million volunteers out there helping others where they can.

The theme for National Volunteer Week 2021 is Recognise. Reconnect. Reimagine. It aims to recognise the great work of the volunteers, to encourage people to reconnect by volunteering to help others and to reimagine the way in which volunteers are able to serve their communities.

The reimagining piece is a big part of the challenge with statistics showing that since 2014 there has been a 20 per cent drop in the number of hours volunteers give, and that during COVID-19, two-thirds of our volunteers stopped working.

On the recognition front, we’re all invited to join the Wave Your Appreciation campaign and plan a #waveforvolunteers and upload videos and photos of the event to social media using the hashtags #NVW2021 and #waveforvolunteers. See www. volunteeringaustralia.org/get-involved/nvw for more.

For Coolum resident Phil Layton, pictured above with one of the many fellow Coolum walkers in the group, volunteering has added a new dimension to his life.

He founded the Coolum Beach Walking Group under the auspices of the National 4

Heart Foundation after having a scare of his own.

“It was five and a half years ago on Wednesday, 28th December at around 3.30pm whilst attending the Woodford Folk Festival with the full intention of playing my saxophone with some fellow musicians whom I knew there, with temperatures soaring at the high 30 end of the thermometer that I all of a sudden began to feel thirsty, dizzy, weak, uncoordinated and nauseated,” Phil said.

After seeing First Aid on site, he was sent to hospital having been identified as having Atrial fibrillation that can lead to the upper chambers of the heart quivering out of control. The scare led him to the Heart Foundation, and then the regular exercise of the walking group.

Phil is also involved as a volunteer with the Noosa Chorale and has been for many years.

“As a volunteer I have experienced, during these past 10 year that I have lived on the Sunshine Coast, a healthy boost to my selfconfidence, self-esteem, and life satisfaction.

“In doing good for others and the community, I feel a natural sense of accomplishment. My role as a volunteer gives me a sense of pride and identity.”

HUNT ON FOR TYRE SLASHERS THERE HAVE BEEN A TOTAL OF 68 REPORTABLE POLICE OCCURRENCES IN THE EASTERN BEACHES SUBURBS DURING THE MONTH OF APRIL 2021.

This is not the number of jobs Police have attended, this is just the number of reportable occurrences.

These include: Traffic Offences (including drink driving) – 26; Traffic Crash – 3; Sudden Death – 2; Wilful Damage – 10; Domestic Violence – 8; Lost Property – 1; Drug offences – 2; Property offences (burglary etc) – 2; Stealing – 1; Found Property – 6; Public Nuisance – 1; Traffic Complaint – 2; Investigative Warrant

– 1; There have been several reports of vehicles having their tyres slashed in Sunshine Beach and Sunrise Beach.

It has been reported that 9 vehicles had their tyres slashed in Sunrise Beach over night on 7/4/21 and 3 vehicles had their tyres slashed between the 12th and 15th of April 2021 in Sunshine Beach.

Unfortunately the investigations are still continuing and no offenders have yet been identified.

The shop has laid vacant and in an apparent state of abandonment for many years, much to the ire of local residents and lobby groups.

Peregian Beach Community Association has been vocal in its opposition to plans for a three-level development on the site It has urged the developer to present an appropriate, compliant application for the site and take steps to have it built and reactivated as soon as possible.

The appeal is scheduled to be mentioned for review in the Planning and Environment Court in Brisbane on May 14.

From page 1 It also argued that the proposed development for the site was unlikely to be approved as it made no allowance for equitable access to level 1 and the roof terrace “contrary to the Building Code of Australia and the Disability Discrimination Act 1992”.

Another sticking point was the proposed “flat” roof which was not in keeping with the curved roofs and sightlines envisioned in the previous Planning Scheme for the area.

In court documents filed by Connor O’Meara Solicitors on behalf of Andema Pty Ltd the lawyers argue that the development proposed by their client does meet some of the conditions Council has placed around the design of the roof, and that the “buildings present a high quality streetscape with design elements and building form that: a. define the steet and public space; b. provide a consistent building alignment fronting the street and public space; 6

COUNCIL NEWS WITH NOOSA MAYOR CLARE STEWART

NEW TENANT AT SUNRISE SHOPS CHAP PLAN UPDATE

The Coastal Hazards Adaptation Plan (CHAP) has been at the forefront of many people’s minds in recent months.

Council has, over the past week, managed to negotiate a further extension of time to finalise the CHAP until November 2021.

We were given an extension until late May by the State Government, but the November date now allows us to continue to further consult the community to explore workable solutions.

Noosa Council is one of 32 councils that have developed a coastal hazards adaptation plan as part of the State’s QCoast2100 programme.

Council received over 200 submissions regarding the CHAP and we need to use the extra time to carefully review and give consideration to all the issues raised by stakeholders.

COMMUNITY SATISFACTION

Community satisfaction is key, and Council’s Community Satisfaction Survey is being conducted during the first week of May. An independent company will undertake the survey and it will involve interviews of 400 randomly selected Noosa residents.

Council undertakes this survey every two years to check the levels of satisfaction within the community regarding our performance and services. We will always strive to do better, and this survey will enable us to better deliver on outcomes for our residents.

HAVE YOUR SAY ON SHORT STAY

Council is calling for feedback on the proposed local law to manage short-stay letting and home-hosted accommodation in Noosa Shire. Please visit yoursay.noosa.qld. gov. au by 14 May 2021 to have your say. The State Government has deferred its plan for a state-wide framework to manage short-stay letting, but the impacts of short-stay letting on residential amenity continue to be an issue for 8

some in the Noosa community.

Council is progressing the introduction of the new local law to deal with the issues at a local level. We worked with a reference group made up of a wide range of stakeholders to develop these draft local laws, but we need your feedback.

In finalising the proposed local law, Council will consider all the differing views from all stakeholders in the community during the consultation period, so please jump on our website and have your say.

CAPITAL WORKS ON TRACK

Our largest ever capital works programme continues to deliver. Over the Easter holidays Council used the time to carry out a $200,000 project to improve safety for our children along Sea Eagle Drive in Noosaville, which caters to the Noosaville State School and St Teresa’s Catholic College. This upgrade includes an extension of the Sea Eagle Drive school drop-of and pick-up areas and a new pathway along Shire Drive between Morinda Circuit and Sea Eagle Drive to connect with a new crossing facility. Grass roots spending at its best.

NEW GROCER FOR SUNRISE SHOPS

After the impacts of covid, Council has secured a new anchor tenant for the Sunrise Beach Shopping Centre. I spent a fair amount of time over my campaign at the Sunrise shops so am absolutely thrilled that an anchor tenant has been secured. Tanglewood Company will take over the lease with this company providing a grocer, wholesale and retail food production.

The tenant will be a terrific addition to the centre and will drive further business to the area which will benefit all of our tenants as well as providing a wonderful resource to our community. easternbeachesnews.com.au

As we move further down the coast, work has started on the new Peregian Beach Community House.

These works are anticipated to be completed later this year.

It’s part of the $10million investment in the Rufous Street Precinct.

The Community House is part of the third stage of the Rufous Street Precinct, and we are incredibly grateful to the Federal Government for committing $2,550,179 towards Stage 3 of the Rufous Street Masterplan through their Building Better Regions Fund.

The new Community House will have more hire/meeting rooms than the current facility and Stage 3 also includes greenspace of 4000 sqm, with gardens, a play area, winding footpaths and grassed areas.

From the Australian Body Art Festival, our mobile office visit to Peregian Beach, Anzac Day commemorations, and the launch at Parliament of ‘A Beautiful Sunset’, to co- chairing the inaugural meeting of the Parliamentary Friends of First Nations People and so much more.

HOUSING ACTION GROUP

Our Housing Action Group meeting saw progress on several fronts including legislation around secondary dwellings, and it was fabulous to gather with former Lord Mayor Sallyanne Atkinson, Mayor Clare, Susan Davies President of Sharing with Friends, and Joanna Blyth from AECOM regarding a co-housing project by women for women. To hear that this concept started from a speech I gave to 2 years ago, truly was a ‘pinch me’ moment.

COASTAL HAZARDS GRANTED TIME

Following a meeting with residents, it was welcome news that Council has been granted an extension by the State Government until November for the completion of the Coastal Hazard Adaptation Plan. Concerns raised with us have also been relayed to the Minister for Environment.

FIRE BANS EXTENDED

Fire bans within the Cooloola Recreation Area have been extended until September 2021, with further details available on the booking website. This decision was made following an ecological assessment of bushfire impacts from the 2019/20 bushfires and an assessment of the Fraser Island (K’gari) bushfire, however we have requested that this also come to local stakeholders for further consultation.

RIVER ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETS

The newly formed Noosa River Advisory Committee held its inaugural meeting with 10

14 selected stakeholder committee members, representatives from both MSQ and Noosa Council, as well Mayor Clare and myself as observers.

FANTASTIC FELINES ON A ROLL FROM HORSES TO DOGS, NEW ZEALAND, CANBERRA AND MELBOURNE, ANGELA HUNT’S JOURNEY TO BECOMING A MOBILE CAT GROOMER HAS HAD ITS TWISTS.

Meeting Angela at the Peregian Beach home she shares with her cat and dog and seeing her stand next to the large van that is home to her cat grooming business, two things become clear pretty quickly.

One - she is a pocket rocket - just under five foot tall - and two - she is super passionate about animals and doing all that she can to make their lives a little easier.

Angela shares the story of growing up in suburban West Auckland and falling in love with horses because a neighbour across the road had one. That love moved into learning how to break horses naturally - a horse whispering approach. Her size led her to try out race riding and she says even though she won a couple of races as a jockey, the feeling of winning was nowhere near as good as the feeling, as a trainer, of helping a horse to overcome its fear of humans.

While the horses took her all over the world, and a relationship took her to Canberra for a while, it was a friend, and the chance find of a great place to live with a bit of space close to the beach, that tipped her hand to coming to live on the Sunshine Coast.

While she started out dog grooming as a way of making a living Angela said she soon realised that there was a demand for cat grooming on the Coast and no one really offered it as a service.

Knowing from experience that she could create her own space in the back of a customised, airconditioned van and work from a mobile office, Fantastic Felines Cat Grooming was born.

Angela said she worked for a while in a salon where cats were groomed to learn the 14

tricks of the trade and came to understand that the idea cats keep themselves clean was not quite right.

“I’ve learned that cats don’t groom themselves - they lick themselves. The cats ingest all of that grease and they are still not clean.

“People don’t realise how dirty their cat is until they groom them”.

Angela’s van is deliberately designed to limit the distractions for cats - with the doors shut and the airconditioning on there’s no windows to want to escape out of, just a quiet space, a chair and a specially designed bathing area that allows the cats to be washed without sitting their paws under the water. It is this feeling of water over the paws that Angela said cats don’t like - however most are ok with being washed if water is introduced carefully.

The average groom takes from 45 minutes to 1.5 hours and prices start at $130. Mostly, Angela said she grooms the cats on her lap.

CAKE MAKER SPRINKLES MAGIC EVER WONDERED WHAT YOUR LOCAL BEACH OR PICTURESQUE SUNSHINE COAST LOCATION MIGHT LOOK LIKE IF THEY WERE A CAKE SPRINKLE?

Look no further than resident cake artist Toni Kidman’s delicate range of magical coloured, homemade, cake decorating sugar sprinkles.

Recently nominated for Best Product at the Australian Cake Awards, Toni’s hand-dyed cake sprinkles are not only named after local areas, the unique QR Code on each jar will take you on a geography trip to the actual place the sprinkles are named after.

It’s enough to make the non-cake makers amongst us start baking simply to sprinkle goodies with our favourite coloured beach.

It has not been an easy ride for entrepreneur Toni Kidman, owner and operator of Frosting Cakery, to get up and running.

“It was a year-long battle to get my home kitchen council registered,” Toni said.

Until recently the Sunshine Coast Regional Council did not allow home kitchens to be registered for food production and sale.

“The only options for me were to either hire a commercial kitchen or build a full commercial kitchen in my garage,” Toni said.

Taking the matter into her own hands she contacted the council explaining how and why it is possible for home kitchens to be registered.

After speaking to other cake makers across Australia she was able to gather the council requirements they had met to certify home kitchens in their towns and forward them to the Sunshine Coast Council for consideration.

The local councillor and environmental officer agreed to see her home and approved her hygiene and Workplace Health and Safety all conformed to regulations.

Toni’s Home Kitchen Registration Certificate was approved in December 2019 and her efforts have paved the way for other caterers to use their home kitchens for commercial reasons.

Whilst Toni has been a cake artist for over 10 years, supplying beautifully decorated cakes, it is only recently that she has found herself in the cake sprinkles industry.

“The colours that I was keen to use were no where to be found locally, which is why I started experimenting with my own colours,” she said.

The sprinkle base comes in large white bags of sugar balls from Italy.

From there, Toni hand dyes all the colours herself and mixes them until they are combined to a perfect blend.

“My first colour mix was an amazing cotton candy combination which I named Peregian Beach after its cotton candy coloured sunsets.”

Toni sells her cakes with added sprinkle magic to locals for all celebrations.

What would happen if a cake commissioner in Maleny wanted Sunrise Beach colours?

“I’d improvise,” laughs Toni!

ANDY WARHOL & THE BIG APPLE

ALTHOUGH BORN AND BURIED IN PITTSBURGH PENNSYLVANIA, ONE OF AMERICA’S MOST-RENOWNED POP-ARTISTS, ANDY WARHOL, WILL FOREVER BE ASSOCIATED WITH NEW YORK, AKA THE BIG APPLE.

Arriving in Manhattan in 1949 as a successful young commercial illustrator Warhol gained a place for himself in the ‘popular’ mid-century mass culture movement called pop-art, branching out into myriad avant-garde activities assuring him massive amounts of free publicity and celebrity.

Pop artists found inspiration in cartoons and everyday objects and Warhol hit the big time with his renditions of thirty-two Campbell’s Soup Cans and Brillo Soap Pads Boxes.

The original Campbell’s 1962 exhibition was not successful but the few sold were bought back to keep the collection together, now showing at the New York Museum of Modern Art. Warhol and his Manhattan roommate of twenty years, his beloved mother Julia, loved Campbell’s Soup and tasted them all.

Warhol discovered the grunge band The Velvet Underground and designed the Velvet’s debut album’s artwork; a banana that peeled 18

right off the cover!

With Warhol’s promotion, Studio 54 became the premier NY party venue for celebrities and groupies: everyone trying to be more outrageous than the other.

Drug and alcoholfuelled excess eventually shut the club down. Studio 54 is now a successful Broadway theatre.

Warhol’s wet-ink screen-prints are easily recognisable and silk screens of the iconic celebrities Elvis Presley, Jackie Kennedy, Chairman Mao, Marlon Brando and Marilyn Monroe are worth a fortune. Andy also produced a TV show called Andy Warhol’s Fifteen Minutes believing that in today’s media age, everyone can be famous for fifteen minutes.

His legendary film of the Empire State Building was sensational: eight hours from dusk till late at night in one uninterrupted shot. “Is this art?”

BEATING LOCKDOWN WITH ART THERE HAS BEEN ONE GIFT THE PANDEMIC HAS GIVEN – AND THAT’S TIME. BUT THE PAUSE IN USUAL ROUTINES FOR MANY, ESPECIALLY YOUNG PEOPLE, HAS BEEN FILLED WITH PANDEMIC PANIC AND FEARS ABOUT THE FUTURE. One young local, sick of the bad news on TV and social media during the height of COVID, unplugged and picked up a paintbrush for the first time.

Fast forward to now, 20 paintings later, Felix Gaborit (pictured) is exhibiting at the Bendigo Bank Community Art Project at Tewantin and has launched a website to showcase his work and hopefully inspire other youth to use these changeable times to explore their creativity.

Felix, a 21-year-old IT business owner developed his artistic and musical interests during COVID by going outside and noticing what made him feel good about being in nature and finding a way to express that.

With natural landscapes, animals and skyscapes his interest, often bringing in a number of scenes into one piece, he uses bright acrylic colours boldly in all his paintings, recreating how he feels being outdoors.

His latest mural, a 2m x 1.4m canvas, brings together the mystery of jungle, beauty of blossom trees with the calm of floating islands and purity of crystalline rock formations.

“The aim of the painting to bring joy and excitement,” Felix said “(my general) theme of nature’s beauty is a healing experience ...it’s an inspirational reset palate for the eyes, mind and soul.”

“I would like all people who view my artwork to recognise the incredible beauty and unimaginable complexity and vast expression of nature and to recognise they are part of this wonder.

than can be imagined or told.

It is truly infinite and absolutely achievable - so activate your consciousness - you are enough!”

Some people like to sing or write but painting and music, Felix said, are his creative avenues and he hopes by people seeing something bright and exciting like his art, will motivate them think ‘I want to go and do something’.

A tip for tapping into creativity Felix says is to recognise the power of now and ‘let go of selflimiting thoughts of inadequacy or focusing on just earning money’.

“Young people especially need to recognise what they are part of ... and once they change that perspective (they) create an environment to stop, look and recognise that maybe (they) should sit down and do something different,” Felix said.

MANAGING TIME NOT ENERGY In this week’s edition I want to explore energy a little more and share a few ways you can boost your brain’s fuel level. Let’s start by thinking about managing energy not time. Many of us would love more time to get our ever-expanding TO DO lists done. But we know time is finite.

Energy on the other hand, is renewable.

RENEWEABLE ENERGY Tony Schwartz and Catherine McCarthy from the Energy Project suggest energy can be expanded and regularly renewed in four key areas: the body, emotions, mind and spirit.

By establishing specific rituals in each of these areas, people can effectively recharge and reenergize themselves. They recommend creating behaviours that are intentionally practiced and precisely scheduled. The ultimate goal? To make these new behaviours habits; part of our unconscious and automated repertoire.

WANT TO RECHARGE AND ENERGISE? Becoming aware of the behaviours that deplete our energy is key. Are you burning the candle at both ends? Do you skip meals? Are you a multitasker? These are just some of the behaviours that put a strain on our fuel reserves and wear us down. Over time we become exhausted, unable to give to ourselves or the people we care about.

Instead, we can look to develop behaviours that elevate our energy and boost our fuel level.

Here’s just a few to get you started: TIPS TO ELEVATE YOUR ENERGY AND BOOST YOUR FUEL LEVEL • Prioritise sleep by setting a go-to-bed alarm • Switch off from all technology at least one hour before going to bed • Avoid low-blood sugar feelings by eating smaller meals more often • Take regular movement breaks - get outside • Switch on your relaxation response by practicing deep belly breathing • Learn to label negative emotions – by naming them, you tame them • Catch your negative self-talk and talk back with a friendly voice • Dial up the feel-good factor by showing 20

appreciation to others • Be generous in your assumption of others; maybe they’re doing it tough • Take a moment to think about what you are grateful for in life • Focus your energy on just one thing at a time • Choose different spaces to do different types of work • Try checking email just twice a day • Turn off all notifications to decrease interruptions • Schedule your most demanding work earlier in the day • Take time out to eat away from your desk • Get some play in your day – even small amounts can boost your energy • Plan fun things to do with friends and family members • Create an uplifting playlist to transition between work and home • Spend some time doing something you LOVE every day FEELING BETTER AND DOING BETTER? When we prioritise these renewal rituals we create the conditions to show up more often as a better version of our self. Not only do we feel better and do better, our positive energy rubs off on those around us. Taking steps to manage our energy means we all have better days.

The annual Bookfest, which this year was raising money to support research into Suicide Prevention as its main cause, got off to a good start on the preview night with trolley loads of books sold to eager buyers with an eye for a bargain.

The three day book sale is the culmination of months of

work by the Rotary team who spend hours sorting through donated books and boxing them up for sale in the lead

up to the event. This year’s occasion also marked 100 years of Rotary in Australia, celebrated with a cake.
