At Peregian Beach, the completion of the new Community House at Rufous Street is expected in 2022, and the Essence of Peregian development on the land behind the IGA is slated for opening at the end of the year.

Those involved in surf life saving will be keeping a keen eye on the volunteer numbers this summer as the club pushes forward in a Eastern Beaches News - January 2022

bid to become independent of the Noosa Heads Surf Club and start moving towards a traditional set up of sporting club and supporters club.

At Sunrise Beach, the locals will be watching the progress of Blue Care’s proposed aged care and retirement village venture at 9 Grasstree Court. The project has had much attention given its location falls within a well known feeding ground for Black Glossy Cockatoos and some fear the construction will drive the birds away.

The Federal election is coming too with voting expected by May.

Welcome to 2022!

This month’s note is a little tricky to write, given the challenges of Christmas shutdowns and early print deadlines means the magazines have had to hit the press before a lot of the Christmassy events planned for the region have actually happened. We’d love to have social photos from the carols in these pages, but alas, that would mean no magazine until the end of January. I hope the weather is kind to the organisers and everyone has a fantastic time!

While this edition is on the press, our interstate friends and family will be allowed across the border for the first time in months and local businesses will be grappling with just what the latest COVID mandates mean for them and their staff in terms of policing the

vaccination status of their guests.

One thing I implore anyone reading this to remember is that whatever the rules are that our local service staff are required to work with in the next few months in pubs, clubs, cafes and the like - they are rules that have been mandated for those particular forms of business by government and rules that they, as staff members, have no control of. They are simply doing their jobs and it is for us, as guests, to do what we can to make that as easy as possible.

This month’s edition includes some top tips for looking after your skin during the summer months, along with a wide selection of upcoming events and holiday ideas to think about.

HOUSING ISSUES ON THE AGENDA RISING RENTS AND RECORD HOUSE PRICES ARE DRIVING AN ACCOMMODATION CRISIS ACROSS THE SUNSHINE COAST WITH FAMILIES BEING PRICED OUT OF THE MARKET.

The recently released Rental Affordability Index, part of report compiled by National Shelter, SGS Economics & Planning, the Brotherhood of St Laurence and Beyond Bank Australia, shows rents on the Sunshine Coast are becoming unaffordable for anyone earning less than $80,000 a year.

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare’s latest homelessness statistics released on December 7, show the 1600 services that report in to the Institute nationally assisted 278,300 clients from June 2020 to June 2021.

Next to COVID-19, the stories of families living in cars or moving away from the Coast to find somewhere affordable to live have become one of the most regular topics of conversations of late and an almost daily feature of local social media groups.

Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart said housing availability and affordability are big issues for the shire.

Although local government is not responsible for providing housing, Mayor Stewart said the Council was lobbying the state and federal governments to address the issue, and doing what it could to help itself.

“We were pleased to help facilitate the recent Housing and Homelessness Roadshow that brought 15 agencies, including Department of Communities, Housing and Digital Economy and social housing providers together in one place to assist those in need,” she said.

“In addition, we’ve allocated land to support Youturn’s ‘tiny homes’ project to deliver youth transitional housing.

“We’re pleased to support the Noosa Social Services Hub at Tait-Duke Community Cottage - a fortnightly drop-in service, which provides Eastern Beaches News - January 2022

access to multiple agencies under one roof, including health, housing and welfare support.

“Meanwhile, our staff are part of a range of key groups including Sunshine Coast Place Based Response to Homelessness Team (SCPBRT) and Sunshine Coast Care Coordination Group.

“Our Strategic Planning staff have prepared a new Housing Needs Assessment, which is now being independently expert-peer-reviewed and will be tabled at a Council meeting in the near future.”

The lack of housing also affects businesses looking for staff.

“We know that local businesses are finding it hard to attract and retain staff because of a lack of affordable housing options,” Mayor Stewart said.

“This is an important area of focus to help protect our community’s social and economic health.”

“We’re working in consultation with housing providers and local MP Sandy Bolton whose Housing Action Group is looking at local housing issues in detail.

“Our staff continue to review Council and state-owned land in Noosa to see whether any parcels could be used for social, crisis and key worker housing.

“Discussions are also underway with churches and other community groups to identify any land they may have, as well as hostel operators to look at whether they can help house local people, even if only for three months at a time.

“It requires a collaborative approach to find solutions to homelessness and housing affordability issues.”

MONEY TO SUPPORT NEW STAFF NEW RESEARCH BY JOBACCESS HAS SHOWN THAT BUSINESS OWNERS MAY BE OVERLOOKING A CONSIDERABLE WORKFORCE OF TALENTED PEOPLE LIVING WITH A DISABILITY.

JobAccess, the national hub for disability employment information, found that 70% of Australians have not heard of workplace adjustments which are one of the most effective ways to enable people with disability to gain and retain employment.

JobAccess General Manager Daniel ValienteRiedl said “working from home” was a recent workplace adjustment that had garnered a lot of attention, however there were other things that could be altered to make it easier for those with disabilities.

Workplace adjustments are described as administrative, environmental or procedural changes made to enable people with disability to access employment opportunities and work efficiently and comfortably.

“They are a powerful asset when building truly inclusive and accessible workplaces,” Mr Valiente-Riedl said.

Importantly, the survey found that awareness of workplace adjustments is not only low among the general population, but

also among people with disability.

“When a person with disability requires adjustments, they might not even know that they could ask for them or that support to arrange them is available,” Mr Valiente-Riedl said.

“That could mean they miss out on an opportunity and an employer misses out on a productive, skilled employee because of this lack of knowledge.

“The assumption often is that workplace adjustments are difficult and expensive to implement. But there is support through JobAccess and the Australian Government’s Employment Assistance Fund (www.jobaccess. gov.au/employment-assistance-fund-eaf) “Our internal research shows that half of modifications cost less than $1,000, and that many adjustments can be made at no cost at all, like providing flexible work hours or locations.”

The EAF can provide funding to eligible people with disability for physical modifications to a workplace, assistive technologies, Auslan interpreting, awareness training, and specialist support services.

GENEROUS DONATION FOR DV PHONES A $50,000 DONATION FROM THE N BADCOCK FOUNDATION WILL HELP DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SUPPORT CHARITY DV SAFE PHONE TO SUPPLY EVEN MORE PHONES TO THOSE IN NEED THIS SUMMER.

The foundation, created by former farmer Neil Badcock to help those in need, made the donation after seeing the work DV Safe Phone does to take donated phones, reset and test them, and then make them available as a “safe phone” for those involved in violent domestic 4

situations. DV Safe Phone founder Ashton Wood said for domestic violence victims, having a phone that was not controlled by the violent partner offered a lifeline to call for help if needed.

Mr Ashton said the money would go towards repairing and replacing screens and parts on phones that had been donated and were just waiting to be fixed.

TOP TIPS FOR SUN SMART SKIN WITH SUMMER HERE AND HOLIDAYS FOR SOME, IT’S TIMELY TO HAVE A THINK ABOUT HOW WE LOOK AFTER OURSELVES WHEN THE SUN’S RAYS ARE AT THEIR MOST POTENT.

Just Skin Treatment Clinic Chief Operating Officer Joanna Noller said while summer was a great time to get outdoors and enjoy the beach, a BBQ, backyard cricket or anything else that “makes you smile” it could also be brutal on the skin.

“We treat people with non-melanoma skin cancers across our three clinics, so we see firsthand the impact sun exposure has on people every day,” Joanna said.

In the interest of helping people protect themselves, Joanna shared these tips on how to look after your skin this summer.

1. Apply sunscreen as part of your normal morning routine: Creating this habit will greatly assist with those everyday moments where we find ourselves in the sun for shorter periods of time.

2. Apply sunscreen 20 minutes before you leave the house. Sunscreen needs time to absorb into your skin and start protecting you properly, so make sure you apply SPF 30+ or more 20 minutes before getting in the sun.

should be applied to each arm, each of your legs, the front of your body, your back and your face (including your neck and ears).

Reapply your sunscreen. If you’re spending extended time in the sun, reapply your sunscreen every 2 hours, or more frequently if swimming or sweating.

You’ll need more than sunscreen to stay fully protected. Sunscreen alone can’t keep you completely protected.

Ideally, sit in the shade where possible.

An umbrella or shade tent at the beach is ideal, and try covering up with a long sleeved, breathable shirt.

Don’t forget about your eyes. Wearing a wide brimmed hat not only reduces the impact of UV rays on your face and neck, it can minimise the amount of UV rays reaching your eyes by 50%. Add a pair of sunglasses and you can prevent 98% of the sun’s rays from impacting your eyes (look for sunglasses with a 9 or 10 Eye Protection Factor).

Get to know your skin and check it regularly. While this won’t prevent skin cancer, getting a professional skin check at least once every year helps with early detection and if treated early, most skin cancers result in a positive outcome. easternbeachesnews.com.au

A distance for everyone, these trails are achievable to those with various fitness levels to enjoy.

Noosa’s hinterland is thick with trails taking cyclists and horse riders through its wonderful paths and Nick is delighted to present our beautiful region to both experienced and inexperienced trail runners.

Carefully mapping out 6 different courses, utilising sections of the existing trail network, all with different lengths and exposure, Nick has planned his distances to the finest detail.

“I’ve enjoyed some amazing experiences while trailing in Europe and Australia, so I wanted to bring everything that I love about the sport to Noosa” Nick explains.

We have shorter trails for beginners who may simply chose to walk the distance but with extensive trails of up to 100 km it is 8

advised that only experienced runners take on those challenges.

There are organised course marshal attendants, check point stations and a range of crew ensuring that all runners and walkers are looked after. All distances will include steep climbs, narrow pathed valleys, uneven terrain, and guaranteed adventure.

The weekend also includes an extensive range of experiences including yoga classes, ferry cruise, and an exclusive lunch with guest speakers creating an inclusive environment for athletes’ families.

Adhering to parks and wildlife conservation experts, athlete numbers are restricted so turning away people will not be easy but if the event is a success, we can do it all again another day!

For anyone without a horse or a mountain bike and keen to visit these elusive trails, being part of the event could be quite exciting.

The shortest distance is 15km and a good training ground would be to walk or run from Sunshine Beach to Coolum.

Lovers of a good mixed drink will want to earmark January 29 in the diary for the Nightquarter Cocktail Festival in Birtinya.

The doors open at Noon and close at 10pm with visitors treated to a maze of pop-up bars showcasing a wide range of creative concoctions blended from the “most buzzworthy” spirit brands. The Nightquarter’s street food vendors will be serving food and there’ll be live entertainment too.

FROM THE STAGE TO THE PAGE TALENTED SUNSHINE COAST THESPIAN ALLI POPE-BAILEY HAS USED THE CHALLENGES OF COVID-19 TO TURN HER ATTENTION TO THE WORLD OF CHILDREN’S BOOKS AND PENNED A CHILDREN’S BOOK ADAPTATION OF HER STAGE PLAY SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN COOL DUDES.

For many locals, Alli’s face will be familiar as the face of Jally Entertainment which has been touring interactive children’s stage shows around the country for many years.

As an actor, director, producer and playwright, Alli is no stranger to telling stories.

For her latest project she joined forces with South Australian artist Ziggy Moskwa who has worked with Jally on set designs in the past and converted the stage show Snow White and the Seven Cool Dudes to an illustrated children’s book adaptation, Snowy and the Seven Cool Dudes.

The book is described as being “an inclusive story, written to rhyme, on acceptance and kindness”.

Alli, whose other shows have included productions of Noah and the Ark, Aladdin and his Magic i-Pod, Little Red in the Hood, Cinderella Spinderella and Goldilocks Rocks, will be officially launching the books at Annie’s Books on Peregian on Saturday, January 8 from 10am.

Signed copies of the book will be available on the day, along with a chance to meet the author.

Facepainting, fairy cakes, music and fancy dress will be other highlights of the event with the person with the best costume on the day to receive a free copy of Snowy and the Seven Cool Dudes.

NEW LOOK ON THE WAY FOR EUMUNDI’S MAIN STREET The latest in placemaking design will be on show at Eumundi this month as Sunshine Coast Regional Council displays its early plans for an updated streetscape for Memorial Drive.
