The stats are in on the Sunshine Beach area with a population of 6851 in 2021.

OUR STATS ARE COMING THE FIRST OF THE POPULATION DATA FROM CENSUS 2021 HAS LANDED AND THERE ARE CLOSE TO 11,000 PEOPLE LIVING ON THE EASTERN BEACHES.

The top line figures on the Australian Bureau of Statistics QuickStats database for Statistical Areas Level 2 show Sunshine Beach (which includes Sunrise Beach, Castaways, Sunshine Beach and Marcus Beach) had a population of 6,851 on Census night 2021 compared to 6,534 in 2016.

Peregian Beach to Marcus Beach recorded 4,107 people in 2021, up Eastern Beaches News - August 2022

from 3,761 in 2016.

The median age was the same for both areas at 46 years, as was the average number of people per household at 2.4.

Median weekly household income was $1,755 in the Peregian Beach to Marcus Beach catchment in 2021 and $1,347 in 2016, while it was $1,826 vs $1,371 in the Sunshine Beach statistical group.

Median monthly mortgage payments were $2,167 in 2021 in Sunshine Beach, up from $1,863 in 2016, and $2,100 in Peregian Beach to Marcus Beach, up from $1,890 per month in 2016.

MUCH-LOVED KINDY CALLS FOR SUPPORT THE PARENT COMMITTEE OF PEREGIAN BEACH COMMUNITY KINDY HAVE LAUNCHED A CAMPAIGN TO RAISE MONEY FOR A GARDEN MAKEOVER TO COINCIDE WITH THE KINDY’S 40TH BIRTHDAY.

A statement on the Kindy’s facebook page says that since opening in 1988 it has been a dream of the educators to be able to make better use of the backyard space, to make it more accessible.

A sensory playspace, equipped with flexible learning areas, a fairy garden, scramble net and mud play area have been proposed to complement the native and organic garden features already there. The vegetable/edible

garden would get a makeover too.

“We, as representatives of the current parent committee, are therefore reaching out to past, present and future families, educators and members of the wider community to contribute what they can to making this backyard makeover a reality”.

DRIFTING INTO AN ARTY WORLD

BY FIONA EWINGTON MANY OF OUR EASTERN BEACHES’ LOCALS HAVE WITNESSED REGULAR SHIFTS IN SANDBANKS, WIDENING CREEKS AND SURGING TIDES.

The recent heavy rain, strong winds and flooding has resulted in an abundance of debris and wild wood being washed onto the sands.

Whilst the plastics and polystyrene are continuously being cleared and disposed of appropriately, the organic driftwood has been sculptured into clever art type structures.

One such structure was the brainchild of a local anonymous beach goer whose art started quite by accident.

Initially volunteering to assist with an organised beach clear up, he arrived too late to join the group, so set out alone collecting driftwood, thinking that perhaps it could be used as firewood.

Learning that wood from the sea is not good for burning as it creates poisonous gases, his log pile grew.

Enjoying the freshness of the beach and the various different shapes and sizes of this wild washed up wood, our very own “Banksy” has created a clever, intricately woven structure, which has been able to withstand the extreme weather conditions.

This growing sculpture located on a setback sandbank on Sunrise Beach, is not the only driftwood creation, as impressive tepee type sculptures have been cropping up along our shores in various other locations.

All are out of reach of the tideline and would have required considerable effort to drag and erect the heavy wooden logs, trunks and branches.

In some waterfront areas driftwood is seen as a nuisance, but according to sources, driftwood provides shelter and food for birds, fish and other aquatic species as Eastern Beaches News - August 2022

it floats in the ocean.

Gribbles, shipworms and bacteria decompose the wood which turns it into nutrients that are gradually reintroduced to the food web.

Removing driftwood from beaches, is not illegal, but it’s not encouraged.

Driftwood when left as part of the natural environment can assist in building/stabilising dunes and making them more resilient in the face of future storm events.

It can also be used by sea eagles and other birdlife for nesting.

With regular surfers and swimmers in our region, our local lifeguards advise that the washed-up wood is safe on the shore as long as the structures do not obstruct beach entrances.

The recent “Coastrek” event which brought over 2,300 participants to our eastern beaches, walking from Caloundra to Noosa raising funds for Beyond Blue 24/7 Support Service, enjoyed the beach art, showing their enthusiasm by posing for photos in front of the structures.

For many of us, enjoying the winter sand, sunshine and surf, witnessing these everevolving growing structures on this public land makes for a bit of fun and a bit of unusual seasonal art. And why not?!

GIANT FERRIS WHEEL TIMING

Memberships for the 2022-23 Nippers season at Sunshine Beach Surf Life Saving Club open this month.

Saturday, September 10, has been decided as the date for this year’s Spirit of Peregian fundraising gala event to be held under the stars at Peregian Park.

Booked to kick off at 4.30pm until 10.30pm, the night will feature Hot91 breakfast host Sam Coward as MC, along with live music, enthralling guest speakers, auctions and raffles.

LIFESAVING AWARD RECOGNITION The Sunshine Coast Branch of SLSQ surprised our Club President, John Roderick at the recent Branch presentation night held at Sunshine Beach SLSC where his efforts re-establishing the Peregian Beach SLSC were acknowledged with one of one of the major awards of the evening – the Silver Clive Hammond OAM medal.

This award recognises an individual who has made an outstanding and special contribution to the development and/or well-being of his/ her club or Branch.

John will now be one of the finalists for the Gold Clive Hammond OAM medal to be awarded at the SLSQ Awards of Excellence to be held in August.

Are you suffering with back pain?

Back pain? It is very common to suffer from a ‘disc injury’ and we have all heard about the dreaded disc bulge! The good news is, although a disc injury can be very painful, it can also be effectively treated and managed.

Here are our key tips: • Understand your pain.

A lumbar disc is simply a thick ligament between the vertebrae and can sustain injury similar to an ankle sprain. Initially there can be inflammation that can narrow the space for nerves.

Once this swelling subsides it’s time to start moving and get strong again!

• In the acute phase - minimise sitting and bending that create a painful stretch to the lumbar spine. Talk to your GP about reducing inflammation.

• Rest but don’t retire. Research has found that avoiding all movement can make you worse.

Try gentle walking or pool work to get you moving.

• Seek treatment early! Get individual assessment and treatment to help you move forward.

TREKKING FOR A GOOD CAUSE

By Fiona Ewington FOR SOME EASTERN BEACHES’ LOCALS, WINTER IS A FAVOURITE TIME OF YEAR. THE COLOURS ARE CRISP AND CLEAR, THE TIDES REACH SPECTACULARLY LOW LEVELS AND THE VIEWS ON THE CLEAR DAYS STRETCH AS FAR SOUTH AS POINT CARTWRIGHT.

Participants taking part in the recent “Coastrek” event, who walked along our beautiful coastline from Currimundi to Noosa on Friday 15 July, were treated to a picture perfect day along our beautiful stretch.

Over 2,300 trekkers took part in this annual Sunshine Coast event, run by event organisers, Wild Women On Top, trekking either 60km or 30km in teams of four along our region’s most spectacular coastline, raising funds for Beyond Blue’s 24/7 Support Service.

The coastal trail highlights included Coolum and Peregian Beach, Sunrise and Sunshine Beach finishing in the Noosa Woods.

Witnessing the hordes of trekkers on Sunrise Beach was an incredible site.

Walkers could be seen as far as the eye could see, both north and south.

Some trekkers dressed in active wear, some in crazy costumes and many athletes carried hiking poles.

There were signs pitched along the sand dunes with words of friendly encouragement.

Established in 2004, Wild Women On Top is one of Australia’s largest and longest running women’s health movements.

Their mission is to connect, coach and champion women in the outdoors through community hiking adventures. Their flagship Coastrek program of events, takes place in various locations around Australia.

Community Ambassador, Peta O’Brien, returned for her second Coastrek this year and tackled the 60km distance.

After experiencing the loss of her sister in a tragic accident in 2020, Peta found training and participating in Coastrek helped her recover.

Coastrek includes a dedicated 6-12week training program ensuring all trekkers are well prepared and get the most out of the experience that raises funds for Beyond Blue’s 24/7 Support Service.

This year’s Sunshine Coast event was a momentous success with a record number of athletes taking part, raising a staggering $1,551,000.

In addition to raising funds, trekkers were able to enjoy the physical and mental health benefits of walking in nature.

Our beaches put on a fantastic show, displaying warm sunshine, light gentle breezes, incredibly low tides, and the freshest, cleanest air.

We are so lucky to have this piece of natural beauty on our doorstep.

PROGRESS ON HOUSING CRISIS Writing from Brisbane and the Estimates hearings, where the aim is to scrutinize the QLD Budget for 2022/23.

As previously updated there are no surprises for the Noosa electorate although amongst the highlights was additional funding for the health sector, as well the Student Assistance Transport Scheme and for ongoing and new community projects - all which you can find on my website at https://www.sandybolton. com/budget-2022-23-update/ Most disappointing was the omission of extra funding needed across QLD to address the housing crisis.

However there is progress locally, with my Housing Action Group transitioning to the new Noosa Council Housing Reference Group; state supporting community housing projects; the opening of community housing not-forprofit, Purpose Real Estate; and Council’s draft Housing Strategy open for community feedback at https://yoursay.noosa.qld.gov.au/ draft-noosa-housing-strategy-2022.

DESTINATION PLAN UNDER WAY DESTINATION MANAGEMENT

FIRE TECH FOCUS

Thanks to those who submitted an EOI to join the new Project Control Group that will guide development of a new Destination Management Plan for Noosa.

Forming the project control group is an important first step in the process of developing the new Destination Management Plan (DMP).

In developing the DMP, Council will look to seek feedback from residents, ratepayers, businesses and industry on how to sustainably manage the future of Noosa Shire as a destination.

Council aims to collate a wide range of perspectives to achieve a common goal of developing Noosa as a well-managed and sustainable visitor destination for future generations to enjoy.

Phase two of Council’s industry leading Fire Tech programme will see the Firetech team, tech companies and QFES collaborate to trial new technology to predict, detect, track and fight bushfires.

The aim of the trial is to prove the effectiveness of a range of technologies so that QFES and Australian councils can deploy them with confidence.

Among the technologies to be tested are cameras with artificial intelligence to detect bushfire smoke and distinguish it from BBQ smoke or fog.

Drones will also be trialled to improve situational awareness during a fire.

Uncrewed firefighting solutions will be trialled to keep firefighters out of high-risk situations.

The Digital Hub and Council’s Disaster Resilience team have spent the past two years laying the groundwork and we are incredibly proud of all their hard work in this space.

SHORT STAY APPLICATION LOAD

Council staff are working through the late surge of short-stay and home-hosted accommodation applications from property owners making the most of waived fees.

We appreciate property owners’ patience while staff assess a large volume of applications.

Council waived the one-off application fee between February this year when the local law was introduced, and 30 June 2022 to assist short-stay property owners with the transition to new arrangements.

With the new local law there’s a new 24hour hotline through which residents can report issues with neighbouring short-stay properties: (07) 5329 6466.

The local law also introduces a code of conduct for guest behaviour and minimum safety standards for short-term let properties to help protect guests in the absence of state regulation.
