April 25, 2022, marks 107 years since the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZACs) landed at Gallipoli in Turkey during the First World War to join the Allies in a bid to remove Turkey from the war.

Locally, Anzac Day ceremonies are held each year at the CoolumPeregian RSL on David Low Way and at Tewantin-Noosa RSL at Tewantin. In both cases the ceremonies and marches start at 5.15am sharp. They are very Eastern Beaches News - April 2022

well attended, with people well advised to turn up earlier in order to find a car park and a spot from which to watch the ceremonies.

FROM THE ED’S DESK WELL, 2022 IS A QUARTER OF THE WAY THROUGH.

Not sure about anyone else, but I’m not quite sure where January, February and March went - it’s all been a bit of a blur.

As this edition of the magazine hits the streets local children will be in their final week of Term 1, getting ready to enjoy the Easter holidays.

Local tourist operators will be gearing up for an influx of visitors keen to escape their everyday lives and enjoy our piece of paradise by getting the sand between their toes and some salt on the skin.

While the school traffic will ease in the mornings, the battle for carparks at beach entrances and local social hubs will ramp up for a few weeks - we just need to remember, the busier the better for our local families who

make their living serving an amazing array of food, drink and experiences to locals and tourists alike. Here’s hoping for a successful, less COVID-affected holiday season for everyone!

In this month’s edition we have our regular columns from Noosa MP Sandy Bolton and Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart. Common to both is a big thank you to the locals who have banded together in the past few weeks to do their bit to help to remove the thousands of polystyrene balls that have blended with the sand after breaking off large river pontoons dislodged from rivers up and down the Coast in the wake of the recent floods. The clean up will continue over the weeks and months ahead as mother nature sends back to our shores much that was washed out to sea. Let’s keep doing our bit to protect our beaches.

PUT ART ON THE EASTER AGENDA THE COOLUM ART COLLECTIVE’S EASTER ART EXHIBITION IS BACK AT THE COOLUM CIVIC CENTRE FROM FRIDAY, APRIL 15 TO SUNDAY, APRIL 17 FROM 9AM TO 5PM.

The ever-popular event features more than 200 original works from about 20 local artists across a range of art and craft mediums from paintings in oil, watercolour and acrylic, to mixed media and pastels.

The artists will also submit one piece of work each towards a set theme. Visitors to the exhibition will be asked to stroll through this part of the exhibition and cast their vote towards the 2022 People’s Choice Award.

Artist De Gillet Cox, a QCA and Griffith University Honours graduate, has been called upon to cast her professional eye across the exhibition’s various sections and to assist the Collective in awarding a range of prizes to

local artists participating this year.

Entry to the exhibition is free, although it is always advisable to bring your wallet and take advantage of the opportunity to purchase quality artwork and artisan items at exhibition prices.

The official opening and the presentation of prizes by De Gillett Cox will be held on Saturday, April 16, at 4pm.

HELP FOR BUDDING AUTHORS

Budding authors have the chance to learn from industry professionals at Noosa Library in May as part of The Radical Memoir – Writer’s Workshop Series.

Authors Shelley Davidow and Paul Williams will share some secrets of the trade with participants who have the chance to sign up for four Saturdays in a row starting May 7, from 9.30am to midday.

The authors will help budding writers to learn how to turned lived experience into a gripping story that others will want to read.

COMMUNITY TO THE RESCUE

BY FIONA EWINGTON OUR EASTERN BEACHES HAVE TAKEN AN ENORMOUS BATTERING THIS SUMMER WITH CYCLONE AND TSUNAMI SURF, RELENTLESS RAIN, STRONG WINDS, UNUSUALLY HIGH TIDES, AND UNEXPECTED STORM SURGES CUTTING INTO OUR SAND DUNE.

The region has seen fewer blue skies, multiple beach closures and encompassing seafoam reminiscent of lava which have been both fascinating and overwhelming to watch.

But nothing has torn through the hearts of our beach community more than seeing large clumps of polystyrene, jagged concrete blocks and an array of unusual man-made structures discarded by the ocean, ending up on our shores.

Multiple crumpled and distorted pontoons have broken moorings from as far away as Brisbane and landed on our eastern beaches where their disintegrated materials presented an escalating environmental disaster.

But our community has banded together to help clean up our beaches.

From individuals filling bags, with help from strangers, to organised volunteer groups, all of the clean ups have been constructive.

trucks to take away the bigger structures leaving behind enormous tyre treads, before concentrating on similar clear ups on the north shores.

Renowned beach cleaners, Ocean Crusaders, The Noosa Care Army, Surfrider Foundation Sunshine Coast have all brought vacuums and rakes taking away large amounts of debris and locals of all ages have helped too, removing unwanted rubbish from Coolum to Sunshine Beach and everywhere in-between.

Social media pages have been inundated with photos of clean ups and call outs for more volunteers.

beach access points for anyone to have a quick clean up when they have had a few minutes to spare.

Sunrise Beach residents, Max and Mary Stockwell took some council bags and spent the afternoon picking up the tiny white polystyrene balls at Sunrise Beach.

Other beach goers found something unwanted to pop into their bag turning it into a collective effort.

This initiative has been successful with

multiple filled bags being left at beach access points for council collection.

Whilst mother nature has its own ideas on how she plans to sculpt our sand dunes and choose paths for our storm water, residents continue to encourage each other to assist in this enormous task of maintaining our beautiful eastern beaches.

Whether with friends, family or organised volunteer groups the community continues to come together. Every little bit helps.

EXPANSION BOOSTS BROKERS

MARCH 18, 2022 WILL GO DOWN AS A SPECIAL DAY IN THE HISTORY OF MORTGAGE CHOICE PEREGIAN BEACH.

After outgrowing their original office on Peregian Square and moving up to their current spot on the corner by the roundabout just over 12 months ago, the team has expanded again, this time adding another premises to the mix by taking on a second office location at 29 Thomas St, Noosaville.

Business owners, husband and wife, Larissa Barton and Gordon MacVicar said when the opportunity came up to take on the Noosaville location, they had jumped at the chance to be able to offer their services to a wider area, and also to expand their office space to better cater for the current team of 10.

Larissa said the business had grown from being just the two of them when the doors first opened in 2016 to now having four brokers and six support staff dedicated to helping local residents find the home loan or refinance that best suited their situations and property needs.

It’s been a steady rise since the doors first opened to the point where Mortgage Choice Peregian Beach is now writing in excess of 250 home loans a year and Gordon was named 8

Best Regional Broker 2021 in The Adviser magazine’s Better Business Awards.

He said the team was particularly proud of the work they had been able to do in the first homebuyer space where they had been able to help many customers to find a way into the Sunshine Coast property market as well as assisting customers to access the equity in their property for renovations and pools which ultimately improves the value of their property.

With the move into Noosaville, Larissa and Jos Robinson will be tackling the broker roles in that office, while Gordon and Chloe Hobelt will be on deck at the Peregian Beach office.

Gordon said the team aimed to create a welcoming environment for their clients, and it had been rewarding to bring the same distinctive look and feel of the Peregian Beach office to their new space in Noosaville.

In the space of four weeks the old Noosaville office was repainted, refurbished, re-branded, re-lit, and opened for business.

NOOSA COUNCIL NEWS WITH NOOSA MAYOR CLARE STEWART

GREAT EFFORT ON BEACH CARE Firstly a huge thank-you to everyone who has helped in the massive community effort to assist the removal of polystyrene particles from our eastern beaches over the past couple of weeks.

Our crews have been busy removing the pontoon debris – source of the polystyrene waste – that washed up during the recent weather event, swept our way from the Brisbane River.

Removing some of the larger waste has been a complicated effort that required a backhoe, super-tilt truck, excavators and a D6 dozer.

Crews have been sweeping the eastern beaches following removal of the pontoons to check for remaining debris and other rubbish that may continue to wash up over coming weeks.

Some of the other rubbish has included concrete debris.

Residents have done a fantastic job filling bags of the smaller polystyrene waste and returning the bags to the beach access points.

Collection bags will continue to be placed at the busier beach access points for residents who’d like to continue to assist with the clean-up. Thanks for your efforts.

NOOSA PARADE UPGRADE

Stage one of the Noosa Parade corridor upgrade - one of Noosa’s busiest pedestrian and cycle routes is now well under way.

We expect stage one, which is the section from Munna Point Bridge to Lagoona Drive, to be completed in June.

The second stage covers the section from Lagoona Drive to Belli St, and lastly stage three is from Belli St to the Noosa Parade roundabout.

Council has been working with the

community on the project since 2017 when we consulted extensively on the design elements including amenity, safety, accessibility landscaping and lighting.

As our population continues to grow, we need to continue to tackle traffic congestion and parking issues by reducing reliance on cars and encouraging the use of active and sustainable transport options.

The Noosa Parade corridor upgrade will deliver: • Dedicated and continuous on-road cycle lanes in both directions and a permanent reduction in the speed limit to 40km/h.

• 2.5m wide concrete pathway on the northern side of the road and a 1.5m wide pathway on the southern side.

• Enhanced landscaping and new trees that will provide extra shade and improve visual amenity.

• Eight mid-block, cut through pedestrian refuges along the route.

• New low energy LED lighting will improve use of the pathway after dark.

The construction of the $8 million Noosa Parade corridor upgrade is partially funded by the Department of Transport and Main Roads through the Cycle Network Local Government Grants program with the balance funded by Council.

STATE GOVERNMENT NEWS WITH NOOSA MP SANDY BOLTON

FLOOD RECOVERY TO TAKE TIME Although we are somewhat used to extreme weather events, our recent floods were particularly severe and swift.

Between Queensland and NSW, we experienced a record-breaking deluge, with three days of rain exceeding a year’s worth in London impacting our local communities.

During our recovery, our thoughts are with all affected, and I can personally relate to the difficult clean-up jobs being faced by many Noosans, which is going to take months. All available assistance can be found at https://www.sandybolton.com/floodassistance-2022/ THANK YOU TO HELPERS

During every disaster, there are so many who work tirelessly in multiple realms during the emergency, and then to cleanup and assist with recovery!

At the most recent parliament sitting, MP’s were provided the opportunity to speak on our floods, and I utilised my five minutes (never enough!) to extend gratitude to our Local Disaster Management Group team, including Noosa Council, police, fire, SES, ambulance, rural fire brigades and many others, as well local organisations, volunteers and residents who offered everything from accommodation to meals. How incredible is our community!

THE DREADED PONTOONS

With pontoons from Brisbane River and elsewhere landing on our beaches, the devastation from these vessels, along with the vast volume of polystyrene pieces in our ocean, cannot be underestimated.

Noosa Council and Martime Safety Queensland have already removed these unwelcome ‘visitor’ pontoons from our southern beaches and are slowly removing them further north.

As it may take months for remnants to come 14

ashore, every time you head down to the beach, please take a rubbish bag with you, and help in these efforts.

Thank you to all involved who have already contributed to this mammoth task.

HOUSING CHALLENGES STEP UP

Housing availability remains critically low in our region and is further impacted by those displaced by the floods, so please reach out to the Housing Service Centre in Maroochydore on 5352 7333 if you or anyone you know requires assistance.

EMERGENCY POWERS DEBATE

The committee inquiry currently underway into the bill seeking to extend Queensland’s emergency powers to October 2022 is about to be completed, with the Human Rights Commission sharing concerns on this at a recent hearing.

As well, I again spoke in Parliament regarding the ongoing impacts to our community from some of the restrictions including a dire shortage of staff, and the lack of rationale for these. This and other recent speeches are available via our website or the Sandy Bolton MP Facebook page.
