FROM THE ED’S DESK IT’S BEGINNING TO LOOK A LOT LIKE CHRISTMAS!

For our family, Christmas time means school is out and there’s a bit of a break from work for the parents too. It means time at the beach and this year in particular, plenty of time to explore more of the region we have chosen to call home.

While I do have family in Victoria I’d love to visit, including a niece who’s nearly nine months old who I am yet to meet in person - venturing outside Queensland’s borders just doesn’t seem wise. I may be a little risk averse by nature, but the ongoing threat of quarantining on the way back in remains a hurdle for me to travel just yet, as does the ever-changing COVID advice.

Hopefully, for all of our Coolum businesses out there looking for a busy holiday period,

the inclination to stay at home works in our favour with Queenslanders on the prowl for a beachside holiday that makes the most of the limited time off work they have each year, but keeps them relatively safe on the travel front.

Early indications at least suggest bookings are strong for the Christmas period which is great news.

For all of those staff who find themselves working to serve tourists and locals alike over the business month ahead - I’d like to say thank you for giving of your time and energy to help others have a great time.

For those of us lucky enough not be working too much, while it will get a little busy, traffic a little slower, car parks harder to come by, it is also a time that helps to keep our economy ticking and I hope everyone can relax, be patient, be kind and enjoy the hustle and bustle for a few weeks. DIG DEEP FOR FAMILIES IN NEED THE TEAM AT WHITE TIGRESS IN COOLUM USED THEIR FIRST BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS AT THE END OF NOVEMBER TO LAUNCH INTO A CHRISTMAS GIVING CAMPAIGN IN SUPPORT OF CHILDREN AND MUMS LIVING IN REFUGES AS THEY ESCAPE FROM DOMESTIC VIOLENCE.

Co-founder Christine Lynn, pictured right with SunnyKids’ Sue Gilbert, said they would be setting up Christmas trees at their shop just up from Coles at Birtwill Street in Coolum, and at the Pool Cafe and Coles at Peregian Springs.

Christine said she was joining SunnyKids in calling for donations of presents, wrapped with a label including gender or age for children, or simply Mum for the Mums.

“Let’s spoil those in need this year and spread the Christmas cheer,” she said.

PARK WORKS ON THE WAY PARK UPGRADES

The park in Oakmont Court will receive an upgrade with some much needed shade sails being installed over playground equipment.

A new shelter with table and seating will be installed at the dog park at The Avenue.

This is a very popular park, especially in the afternoons, and I’m sure this addition will be welcomed by dog owners. Although I can’t fund a wine fridge to be installed with the shelter, I thank the resident for the suggestion and the laugh.

The site was chosen during the Peregian Springs Masterplan and there is no alternative site within the Springs that is zoned or allocated for this type of facility. A report and findings will be prepared during December and I hope to share the outcomes with you in January.

TURTLE NESTING

DEVELOPMENT WATCH

A number of private developments have had some activity. The child care centre on Longwood Drive looks like it will start construction soon, a number of discussions are being had between the developer and body corporate regarding the Pavilions development, and the development at Koel Circuit has been approved for 38 units and 4 Soho units. This has been a vast decrease from the previous application for 72 units.

COMMUNITY CENTRE CONSULTATION

Consultation to determine the need and demand for a local community facility in Peregian Springs was held during November.

Initial feedback has shown residents continue to require a facility, with concern Members of Quota Coolum Beach are well known for having fundraising stalls around Coolum so when they were invited to have a stall at the Coolum State School Carnival they jumped at the opportunity. Profits from the sale of jams, chutneys, and craft items were donated to the school to support disadvantaged children. Phone Sandra on 0457 335 734.

Turtle nesting season is here so from November to May, please look out for turtle tracks, new nests and emerging hatchlings.

If you do see signs of turtles on our beaches, please watch your step and contact Coolum and North Shore Coast Care on 0478 435 377. You can help the turtles by keeping our beaches clean.

STATE NEWS WITH MEMBER FOR NINDERRY DAN PURDIE

HAVE YOUR SAY ON MOTORWAY MOTORWAY UPGRADE

Following years of lobbying, we’ve finally secured funding to start planning the duplication of the Sunshine Motorway, and the upgrades to the interchange with Yandina Coolum Road, and the roundabout at School Road.

Consultation on this multi-million infrastructure project is happening now, and its important that our local community has their say on what the upgrades will look like.

The $1.75m planning study will include: • Duplicating the Motorway from 2 to 4 lanes from David Low Way to the Yandina Coolum Road roundabout • Upgrades to the interchange • Upgrades to School Road intersection.

LANDMARK LEGISLATION

During the final sitting week of the year, I was pleased to see landmark legislation be passed to help ensure the worst of the worst offenders are kept behind bars.

This legislation, which I referred to as ‘Sian’s Law’ in my speech, was the direct result of the efforts of murdered schoolgirl Sian Kingi’s family to keep convicted killer Barry John Watts behind bars.

I worked closely with the family when we became aware of Watts’ parole application and as a result, we tabled a petition signed by more than 72,000 that called on the State Government to reject his parole bid. Thanks to this overwhelming community support, Watts’ parole bid was dismissed, and tough new laws were announced to make it much 16

more difficult for the worst of the worst offenders, like Watts and Brett Cowan, to ever see the light of day again.

Now, for the first time ever in this state, victims’ families can take comfort in the fact that life does mean life.

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT NEWS: MEMBER FOR FAIRFAX TED O’BRIEN

The Sunshine Coast needs a heavy rail connection from Beerwah to the Maroochydore CBD and the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games are our best chance to deliver it.

I recently proposed a realistic plan for real action as a compromise to the State Government’s inaction on fast rail. And we’ve had a win.

Transport Minister Mark Bailey has publicly supported my proposal, in principle, and has agreed to consider the concept early next year.

DON’T WAIT TO BE A BETTER YOU! TODAY IS THE DAY!!!

Were you one of many people who made a New Year’s resolution as the clock struck midnight on December 31st?

In the majority of cases, those heartfelt promises are long forgotten by the time you reach February let alone this time of year.

So why do New Year’s resolutions usually fail? My theory is that the problem lies within the first two words of those promises. When we say, “This year I will be a better husband/ wife’’ or “This year I will try harder to control my temper” or “swear less” or “smoke less”.

Whatever the resolution may be, we are giving ourselves 365 days to get around to making any changes. There is no urgency, no immediate action required. We don’t set specific start points or think purposely about the resolution or things we want to change, leaving room for us to put it off.

If there are things that you would really like to change, or a resolution you haven’t started yet, can I suggest that you replace the words ‘this year’ with the word ‘today’.

When a person decides, “Today I will…” It requires action and commitment, resolve and determination. It indicates serious intention that is vital if we are to make a change. If there are areas in your life that you know need changing, start today at making those improvements and changes. Don’t wait

for New Years to come around to make a resolution that you probably won’t fulfil. You are the one who will benefit greatly if you don’t delay. It’s never too late to achieve your New Year’s resolution or make the change you always dreamed of.

On a different note, from my family to your family I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. In the midst of all the busyness this time of year can bring, remember the true spirit of Christmas and show kindness to those around us. Try having someone over who might be on their own, buy a ham for a family lacking money, a gift for a child who won’t be getting one or donate to a charity.
