April 25, 2022, marks 107 years since the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZACs) landed at Gallipoli in Turkey during the First World War to join the Allies in a bid to remove Turkey from the war.

Locally, Anzac Day ceremonies are held each year at the CoolumPeregian RSL on David Low Way and at Tewantin-Noosa RSL at Tewantin. In both cases the ceremonies and marches start at 5.15am sharp. They are very Coolum News - April 2022

well attended, with people well advised to turn up earlier in order to find a car park and a spot from which to watch the ceremonies.

With a week to go until the school holidays, here’s hoping Mother Nature sends down the showers over the next six days and then turns down the tap for the Easter break. Our local tourism operators and businesses could certainly do with a couple of clear weeks to help boost tourism activity.

During March, Coolum Business and Tourism hosted a networking and inspiration event at St Andrew’s College.

Cameron shared news of what’s ahead for 4573 in the lead up to the 2032 Olympics and beyond.

It was exciting to hear of the plans being discussed, ranging from extra hotel beds on the Sunshine Coast, heavy rail into Maroochydore, and the expansion of the groundbreaking Blue Heart environmental project that seeks to protect our local floodplains and find a way of capitalising on the carbon filtering power of the wetland environment in the form of carbon credits or similar.

As Paul Fisher was at pains to remind us all, the Sunshine Coast actually scores pretty well in terms of investment, and natural assets, and one of the best things all of us can do as residents and business owners is to proudly share those successes with whoever we meet.

PUT ART ON THE EASTER AGENDA THE COOLUM ART COLLECTIVE’S EASTER ART EXHIBITION IS BACK AT THE COOLUM CIVIC CENTRE FROM FRIDAY, APRIL 15 TO SUNDAY, APRIL 17 FROM 9AM TO 5PM.

The ever-popular event features more than 200 original works from about 20 local artists across a range of art and craft mediums from paintings in oil, watercolour and acrylic, to mixed media and pastels.

The artists will also submit one piece of work each towards a set theme. Visitors to the exhibition will be asked to stroll through this part of the exhibition and cast their vote towards the 2022 People’s Choice Award.

Artist De Gillet Cox, a QCA and Griffith University Honours College graduate, has been called upon to cast her professional eye across the exhibition’s various sections to assist the Collective in awarding a range of prizes to local artists participating this year.

Entry is to the exhibition is free, although it is always advisable to bring your wallet and take advantage of the opportunity to purchase quality artwork and artisan items at exhibition prices.

The official opening and presentation of prizes by De Gillett Cox will be held on Saturday, April 16, at 4pm.

POLICE TARGET DODGY DRIVERS SUNSHINE COAST POLICE HAVE STEPPED UP THEIR EFFORTS TO REDUCE ROAD TRAUMA THROUGH THE LAUNCH OF OPERATION REGAIN, TARGETING DANGEROUS DRIVING BEHAVIOUR ON LOCAL ROADS.

The first three months of 2022 has seen eight deaths on Sunshine Coast roads, the highest toll the District has seen in recent years, as well as 140 serious traffic crashes.

Sunshine Coast District Superintendent Craig Hawkins said there has been a remarkable increase in the number of people willing to drive a vehicle whilst adversely effected by alcohol or drugs.

“I would like to remind those people that wish to put the lives of others at risk on our road, the Sunshine Coast Police will be refocusing our energy at road safety and driver behaviour,” Superintendent Hawkins said.

As part of Operation Regain motorists can expect to see a very strong presence of police

on local roads focusing on: • Drink and drug driving • Hooning activities • Modified vehicles As well as the Fatal Five: • Mobile telephones • Speed • Drink/drug driving • Seatbelts • Fatigue.

An additional 20 officers across the District (61 in total) have been trained in the testing of drivers for drugs, and joint training has been conducted with the Department of Transport and Main Road concerning modified and defective vehicles.

“It is my intent to remind people that road safety is a very high priority for Sunshine Coast Police District, by ensuring that our responsible road users who are on the roads don’t have their lives put at risk,” Superintendent Hawkins said.

TWO WINS FOR SUNSHINE COAST WHEN IT COMES TO THE SUNSHINE COAST WINNERS IN THIS YEAR’S AUSTRALIAN TOURISM AWARDS, WATER AND RAINFOREST PROVED TO BE POPULAR.

Narrows Escape Rainforest Retreat at Montville was awarded a Gold Medal in the Hosted Accommodation category of the Awards, with Pelican Boat Hire of Noosaville achieving a Bronze in the Tourism Retail and Boat Hire Category.

The Awards were hosted at the Sunshine Coast Convention Centre on March 18, with more than 700 tourism operators and guests on hand to celebrate the finalists and the 75 winners announced on the night.

Queensland Tourism Industry Council Chief Executive and Chair of the Australian Tourism 4

Awards Daniel Gschwind said that the Awards offered a platform to showcase the world-class experiences and destinations that Australia has to offer.

Competing with the nation’s best tourism products, Bundaberg Rum Distillery Visitor Experience were the big winners at the Awards night, walking away with top honours for a third time in Tourism Wineries, Distilleries & Breweries.

Having achieved a golden hat trick, the Distillery Experience were inducted into the Australian Tourism Awards Hall of Fame.

COUNCIL WATCHING OVER PARKS SKATE PARK VANDALISED

The Coolum Skate Park was vandalised recently and had to be closed. Following community feedback, council has installed a solar powered, temporary CCTV at Tickle Park.

It will be in place for eight weeks. We hope this will deter any ideas of further damage.

NEW TOILETS AT JACK MORGAN

Another stage of the Jack Morgan Park Masterplan is underway with a new public amenities block set to be complete by October 2022. Jack Morgan Park is a much loved ‘green heart’ in Coolum and the new amenities make it more convenient for everyone.

NEW EQUIPMENT ON THE WAY

The replacement of the playground equipment at Cordellia Street Park, Coolum Beach, should be complete this week. The work has included removing the old equipment and installing a new play structure, new concrete edging, new soft-fall rubber and a sandstone retaining wall to sit on. I hope families enjoy the new equipment.

STRONG SUPPORT BASKETBALL

Survey results for a half-court basketball court in Norrie Job Park were overwhelmingly in support. Thank you to everyone for their valuable comments both for and against.

Future upgrades in this park will be mindful of the issues raised and the overall community’s needs.

SEQ CITY DEAL

The SEQ City Deal announced funding of $35.3m for the Blue Heart project. While it is exciting to have this project included in the deal, I am seeking clarification on what the funding commitment will actually represent - how much of this funding is guaranteed to come to fruition and how much is new funding and not a back count of what has already been spent? Watch this space.

The library will also continue to open from 9am to 3pm on Saturdays.

Community Portfolio Councillor David Law said council knows how much residents love visiting the library and making use of this great resource.

“Our libraries have adapted to the changing times over the last two years and, despite restricted hours and lockdowns due to COVID-19, our Sunshine Coast Libraries have still seen more than 1.5 million visitors through their doors and more than 36,000 people join the library service during that time,” Cr Law said.

“Extending the library opening hours will help us remain responsive to the community’s needs as COVID-19 restrictions are eased and people again fall in love with their local library.”

Nestled in Jack Morgan Park, the Coolum Library offers visitors a unique outdoor deck to read a favourite book, connect to free Wifi or to just stop and relax with a friend.

EXPANSION BOOSTS BROKERS

MARCH 18, 2022 WILL GO DOWN AS A SPECIAL DAY IN THE HISTORY OF MORTGAGE CHOICE PEREGIAN BEACH.

After outgrowing their original office on Peregian Square and moving up to their current spot on the corner by the roundabout just over 12 months ago, the team has expanded again, this time adding another premises to the mix by taking on a second office location at 29 Thomas St, Noosaville.

Business owners, husband and wife, Larissa Barton and Gordon MacVicar said when the opportunity came up to take on the Noosaville location, they had jumped at the chance to be able to offer their services to a wider area, and also to expand their office space to better cater for the current team of 10.

Larissa said the business had grown from being just the two of them when the doors first opened in 2016 to now having four brokers and six support staff dedicated to helping local residents find the home loan or refinance that best suited their situations and property needs.

It’s been a steady rise since the doors first opened to the point where Mortgage Choice Peregian Beach is now writing in excess of 250 home loans a year and Gordon was named 10

Best Regional Broker 2021 in The Adviser magazine’s Better Business Awards.

He said the team was particularly proud of the work they had been able to do in the first homebuyer space where they had been able to help many customers to find a way into the Sunshine Coast property market as well as assisting customers to access the equity in their property for renovations and pools which ultimately improves the value of their property.

With the move into Noosaville, Larissa and Jos Robinson will be tackling the broker roles in that office, while Gordon and Chloe Hobelt will be on deck at the Peregian Beach office.

Gordon said the team aimed to create a welcoming environment for their clients, and it had been rewarding to bring the same distinctive look and feel of the Peregian Beach office to their new space in Noosaville.

FLOOD HELP STILL AVAILABLE FUNDING SUPPORT HAS BEEN SWIFTLY ACTIVATED TO SUPPORT COMMUNITIES SEVERELY IMPACTED

BY THE RECENT FLOODING DISASTER.

The Sunshine Coast was one of the first places to be inundated by the heavy rainfall and flash flooding which tragically claimed the lives of 19 people in Queensland and wreaked havoc across the coast and hinterland.

Federal Member for Fairfax Ted O’Brien said the federal government had activated a number of disaster recovery grants to provide relief for impacted individuals, businesses and community groups.

Funding from the federal government includes the Disaster Recovery Payment, a lump sum of $1,000 for eligible adults and $400 for eligible children, as well as the Disaster Recovery Allowance which provides up to 13 weeks of support at the current JobSeeker rate. A $558.5 million support package has also been negotiated between the federal and state governments to help Queensland small businesses, farmers, not-

for-profit organisations, and sporting and community clubs.

Through this jointly-funded package, demand-driven grants of up to $75,000 for primary producers, up to $50,000 for affected small businesses and not-for-profit organisations, and $20,000 for sporting and community clubs and associations are available to help flood-affected communities get back on their feet.

A further $1 million has also been provided to Councils to provide immediate relief to fund clean-up and recovery activities – including the Sunshine Coast Council.

To enable impacted residents to easily navigate support payments, Mr O’Brien has created a consolidated list of all available funding support and information.

As of March 17, more than $862 million in Disaster Recovery Payment (AGDRP) and Disaster Recovery Allowances (DRA) alone had been paid for those in urgent need.

Eligibility criteria applies and different grants will be open for different time periods.

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT NEWS WITH MEMBER FOR FAIRFAX TED O’BRIEN

WORLD FIRST MANUFACTURING TURBINE PRECINCT

A world-first food and beverage manufacturing facility will be built on the Sunshine Coast thanks to $33.4 million in federal funding that I announced with Industry Minister Angus Taylor recently.

The ‘Turbine Precinct’ will be a mega 20,000sqm purpose-built, collaborative food and beverage manufacturing centre located at the Sunshine Coast Airport.

The project is expected to create 131 new jobs during construction and support 687 once operational with $200 million in economic benefits delivered for the Australian economy each year.

SEQ CITY DEAL

All three tiers of government have come together to sign the SEQ City Deal - a joint commitment to deliver $1.8 billion worth of infrastructure that will transform the region.

I was honoured to attend the historic signing event after years of working closely with Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Infrastructure Minister Paul Fletcher on the deal.

The City Deal will play an important role in delivering transformative projects for the Sunshine Coast and will provide access to two newly created funding streams worth $435.8 million. An additional $35.3 million will also

be invested into the Sunshine Coast’s Blue Heart environmental project thanks to the newly minted Deal.

RECORD LOW UNEMPLOYMENT

While there is still much work to do, the latest economic figures demonstrate Australia’s strong economic recovery from COVID-19.

Unemployment for women is now at the lowest level since 1974 at 3.8% and overall unemployment is just 4%.

Despite the economic hit from COVID-19, more people are in jobs today than before the pandemic.

In short, this shows our economic plan is working.

Rest assured, I am very aware of the challenges facing many local people and businesses. We have more to do.

GO DIGITAL THESE HOLIDAYS THE PEREGIAN BEACH DIGITAL HUB HAS A BUSY SCHEDULE OF PROGRAMS AVAILABLE FOR THE APRIL SCHOOL HOLIDAYS.

Pretty much every day of the break is catered for with a range of tech and creative workshops including: music production (choosing sounds and instruments for different genres) with young producer DBX; digital art/design with Rosie; Python programming courses for kids with Julian + adults with Evyn; three robotics workshops (taught by Royal Robotics, ZEST Robotics and GEAR Up Robotics); and a new video editing workshop with Dylan.

The Hub also has weekly Minecraft gamer sessions (Sunday mornings) and a Procreate group + Digital Social Club for kids (Saturday mornings). Procreate is a Apple Ipad based drawing App that utilises a stylus to capture drawings on screen rather than on paper.

Each workshop will be taught by talented teenagers from the Hub’s Cadetship and mentoring programs and the young teachers keep all ticket proceeds as a way for them to earn holiday money while sharing their skills with other kids.

To prove the case Richard Scholes will take interested children on a tour of The Magical World of Crazy Science on April 6 at Venue 114.

A world-recognised, multi-award-winning entertainer, magician, and visual artist, who is also a scientist and teacher, Scholes’ show incorporates science, magic, comedy, mime and music to teach children about science in a fun way.

What do you get when you trade a microscope for mime and magic? Giant columns of elephant toothpaste, high-flying toilet paper, zooming smoke rings and the incredible magic of polymers and gigantic bubbles!

Venue 114 Manager Louise Thompson said The Magical World of Crazy Science was always a sell-out event and a popular school holiday show for all ages.

“Richard and his Crazy Science show is guaranteed to be entertaining, educational and most importantly, fun,” Ms Thompson said.
