EDITOR'S NOTE @percussionmagazin A cheerful start to this new gateway of opportunities and achievements. Adopting inclusiveness is tough but being inclusive makes everything easier. This new Music Quarterly begins with this idea. Percussion Magazine is trying and will continuously try to include each and every genre defining each and every single person in the world. It aims to involve all the artists serving music in any possible form.

Afterall, music is the most inclusive entity ever existed. From glittering amusements to dubious vigor or extreme sorrow. It runs parallel to all different diaspora of Human behavior. So, Let's pray for this multi dimensional beginning .

The First Issue is a dynamic science. It's similar to that petrichor you smell after the first rain.

Featuring Rashmeet Kaur on cover story is clearly the motivating spirit which automatically attracts you in it's magnetic field. While, on the other hand Giridhar Udupa Ji's musical instrument 'Ghatam' keeps you grounded like the gravitational pull. Listening to the melodious and omnipresent sound in every genre, Antara Nandy is a ten-dimensional chemical reaction occurring somewhere inside you. While Susan Holloway's singing violin is due to some mutation, as I don't believe in magic. Josie's Guitar pattern is though common but is a perfect example of Darwinian evolution. There is an eminent contribution of everyone involved towards publishing this issue.

I

n the late 19th century, a man kept experimenting on his project. With each new day he added an extra element to it.

From the most complex Carbon to the simplest Hydrogen, he invented and sometimes discovered a total of One Thousand One different aspects and possibilities of his project. The last one of that is called Electric Bulb and the man was Thomas Alva Edison.

While interviewing this super talented singer, this incident from somewhere flashed to my mind.

This is Rashmeet Kaur, the diva voice which is breaking the Internet. Not just Internet, but even the trends.

Now, why the story at the beginning is important?

Neither the singer is involved in any science experiment nor is she living in late 19th century.

But it is because of the fact that the Diva Sensation keeps on experimenting and adding up an extra element to her music, maintaining her versatility. From Gurmat Sangeet to beat boxing; From the rocking Punjabi Folk to the soothing curvy Sargams; From calming Ghazals to foxtrotting EDMs. She owns all.

Born to a Punjabi Family and raised in Delhi, she started her musical journey at the age of six with learning Gurmat Sangeet from her mother. The grace of divinity at that tender age became the backbone of Rashmeet Kaur. Formal training for her started from Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, Delhi while she kept learning Gurmat Sangeet from her teacher Jasvinder Kaur.

Appearing in reality shows like Voice of Punjab, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa 2012, Asia’s Singing Superstar 2015 and India’s first digital reality show, The Remix rose her to the heights of fame.

WHEN SOUNDS SPEAK Rendezvous with Rashmeet Kaur

You are a Diva Sensation on social media. Being a part of many reality shows, how much you owe to these reality shows for your success?

I participated in a couple of reality shows like voice of Punjab, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, Asia’s singing superstar and The remix. Every reality show was a different experience and taught me a lot. I think it always added to my qualities and I became a better singer and performer with each one of them. There’s still a long way to go but yes definitely I am grateful for all those platforms.

How did your elementary training in music started? At what age you picked up music?

I started learning Gurmat Sangeet from my mother. She is my first guru and I remember I was around 6 years old when I started singing in Gurdwaras. I still do because that’s where I come from, “Never forget your Roots” I believe. I used to take part in all the competitions during school and college but started taking proper training in Indian Classical Music when I was around 13 years old.

You were the first ever winner of “The Remix – Amazon Prime Originals”. At any time you thought that this contest may change your life and you are gonna win it at any cost

I never thought that I am going to win this show (The Remix) because all the contenders were pretty experienced and established. All I did was give my best in every episode without thinking or worrying about the results and tried to add an extra element to each one of my performances like adding some live instrument, rap, beat boxing etc. always experimenting and adding something new to the given track. I think that helped us (me & SuReal) stand out during the show.

Now, you are performing across the globe, wining hearts and success. How do you see your first ever Stage performance now? How was the experience then?

I remember my first ever stage performance was “Ae Mere Vatan Ke Logon” by Lata Ji in grade 3 during annual day at school. And I saw people getting emotional at the end but couldn’t understand the feeling. Now, when I look back I understand that if you sing from your heart it reaches people’s hearts and that’s all I’m trying to do now in all my live gigs, performances or social media. I feel if it touches even a single heart, it’s an achievement for me and I will continue to do so with my music.

Since you are a versatile artist, I am sure you listen every genre of music but who is that one artist, you like to listen the most and why?

That’s a difficult question. It’s a long list. That one artist changes with the phase and time but if I have to choose

What is Rashmeet’s Percussion for Life?

My percussion for life, I would say “MUSIC” one of my tattoos say “music is life” and I totally believe in it. Whichever state of mind I am in and whatever the situation is music always keeps me going. I can’t imagine my life without it. I am fortunate enough to have music as my passion and profession both and I can express myself through this beautiful medium.

one or two I would say Beyoncé and John Mayer are my two most favourite artists. I listen to their songs the most. I aspire to become like Beyoncé in terms of a singer and performer and I love John Mayer’s song writing.

Currently I am listening to Tom Misch, FKJ and a lot of hip hop artists these days.

Do you play any musical instrument?

I can play Harmonium, acoustic guitar, and a few small instruments like Kazoo, Morchang and Ukelele.

My personal Rashmeet Kaur favourite is “Maati Ki Gudiya”. I know this question is worthless but which of your song could you relate with the most?

Thank you so much for the appreciation. I’m so glad you

liked “Maati ki Gudiya” that’s my personal favourite too this song is based on child marriages and I always try to make songs which convey something meaningful or a social message. Because I want to contribute to the society in a way that they can relate and make it a better place.

You are a Cat lover evidently. Tell us something about this shade of your life.

I am an animal lover. Cats, dogs, horses, camels, I love them all and I wish could pet them all.

Currently I have two cats named Cherry (female) and Joey (male) and they are my life. I am sure they love me too. Since I live in Mumbai and it’s quite convenient to pet cats. I have a dream to pet as many animals as I can. Right now, it’s a little hard to achieve keeping my lifestyle in mind.

As I mentioned before, Rashmeet Kaur is a Diva sensation nowadays. All my friends and colleagues listen to you, follow you on Instagram. It feels that each day you are up to something new. What’s the next big thing you are working on?

The current project I’m working on is my EP “MUSAFIR” consisting 4 songs and music videos these songs are inspired by poets like Bulleh Shah and Shah Hussain. These songs are motivational and talk about life.

INDIA'S FIRST MUSIC MUSEUM IN THE ROW State Minister for Culture and Tamil Development Shri K Pandiarajan in Madurai announced the country’s first music museum will be set up with assistance from the Central Government in Thiruvaiyaru, Tamilnadu, the birth place of Saint Tyagaraja, one of the Trinity of Carnatic music. The other two of the Trinity are Muthuswami Dikshitar and Syama Sastri. This is to bring public interest back to Caranatic Music. The Tyagaraja Aaradhana Music Festival which is held annually in January in Thiruvaiyaru attracts musical talents from all over the world.

THE SAPTAK ODYSSEY The biggest confluence of Indian Classical music and a perfect blend of Hindustani Classical music and Carnatic Music ends on 13th January with full musical blast. The Music featival at Ahmedabad starting on 1st of January witnessed one of the greatest Classical maestros.

WHY YOU SHOULD LISTEN TO MAATI BAANI'S "CHIPKO RE" ?

Over 3,500 trees in Mumbai's Aarey Colony are currently under threat of being razed to make way for a proposed Metro car shed, which would house trains for one the city’s upcoming Metro rail lines. The new video features Piyush Mishra, Kartik Shah and Nirali Kartik with the most part of video being shot in forest area. The lyrics were penned by Piyush Mishra himself brings out the rare songs to you where an extensively specific with wide importance is taken into the issue.

Nirali is quick to clarify that the purpose of the video is not to oppose the construction of the car shed altogether. “Like all Mumbaikars, we all want the Metro rail,” she says. According to Kartik, authorities behind the project had the option of constructing the car shed in Kalina, Kanjur Marg, Backbay, or four other suburban Mumbai localities. “But why [have] the authorities … selected a forest to build the parking lot for the Metro … [especially] when there are seven other options available?”

WORKSHOP – KHOONI MURGA Khooni Murga by Mumbai based band Workshop Proved to be one of the most remembered comedy rock in India. Comprising bassist Riju Dasgupta and guitarist Rajarshi Bhattacharyya from heavy metal act Albatross, drummer Hamza Kazi from prog band Coshish and Makhija aka The Demonstealer, Khooni Murga was a chuckle-worthy listen that the band fully knew was also cringe-worthy.

SOUNDPAD – SOUNDPAD “Yeshu, Allah aur Krishna.”, The song still in memory classics reminds us of Soundpad. In 2009, Indian indie’s best were selected courtesy of British Council to enter the studio with Britain’s veteran sound engineer John Leckie. Though the band got a lot of press during its making but is somehow and somewhere remains in the attic of the memory.

INFERNAL WRATH – INSIDE OF ME One of the country's greatest death metal band made some re-energizing tunes which are still, undoubtedly the most remembered from its genre. The magic of vocalist Afaque Azad’s madman avatar when he’s holding a mic and getting into moshpits, but also breakneck drumming from Prashant Paradkar aka JP and guitar work from Amnish Lohire and Pradeep Pande, not forgetting Keyboardist Sushan Shetty made songs like “The Destruction of the Third Temple.”, “Truth” and “This Everlasting Journey,”.

SWARATHMA – SWARATHMA Mumbai metallers Bhayanak Maut came up with their new avatar in their second full-length album. Through songs like “Habemus Papum” and “Tit for Twat,” “Ungentle,” “Blasted Beyond Belief” and “You’re Perfect, Now Change.” and the crowd's favourite “MNS Messenger” which is a homophone heavy.

SWARATHMA – SWARATHMA Mysuru folk rockers Swarathma made their biggest jump with their debut self-titled album, which came as part of the winnings of Hindi rock band competition Radio City Live.

Produced by fusion veterans Indian Ocean’s Amit Kilam, Swarathma brought together all the hues and moods of the band perfectly, from the electrifying “Patte Saare” to the groovy “Ee Bhoomi” and feel-good tracks like “Barsenge” and “Pyaar ke Rang,” closing with the poignant plea for water conservation with classical powerhouse voice Shubha Mudgal on “Pyaasi.”

5 Zoe Siddharth is a Singer-Songwriter, Actor/Model from India. She was the finalist on “The Stage 3 (India’s only nation-wide English singing talent hunt) on ‘Colors Infinity’ Channel, mentored by Monica Dogra, Devraj Sanyal of Universal Music India, Ehsaan Noorani and Vishal Dadlani. She is currently completing a BA (Hons) degree in Music, majoring in Popular Music Performance at the School of Contemporary Music, LASALLE College of the Arts in Singapore. Soon she will be moving to Mumbai and plans on releasing some original songs this year. She is ready to dive, head first into her passion, and she wont be looking back. She has sung for various Solo/Band Performances in the country and abroad, some venues being- Vh1 Supersonic 2018 in Pune, Hard Rock Café in Mumbai, Pune, Delhi and Bangalore, Esplanade Theatre in Singapore, Covelong Point Surf/Music festival in Chennai 2015. An exponent of Pandavani, a traditional performing art form, from Chhattisgarh, in which she enacts tales from the Mahabharata, with musical accompaniments. She has been awarded the Padma Shri in 1987, Padma Bhushan in 2003. Pandavani, literally means stories of Pandavas, the legendary brothers in Mahabharat, and involves enacting and singing with instrumental accompaniment an ektara or a tambura in one hand and sometimes a kartal in another.

is a lyrical approach to the centuries long problems of the most prevalent society in India. This gives a meaning to Pop which is the basic root of any music genre. if you are looking for an actual experimentation Hip Hop, there is India 91 with Mridangam start and Dhol ending. DIVINE's blissful approach on Sher Aaya Sher is again a same taste track in the album. Javed Akhtar's pen once more gathers the applause for Doori and Ek Hi Raasta, though it misses a voice like Farhan Akhtar. The next track Jeene Mein Aye Maza is a slight jazz in approach by Ankur Tewari with a middle eastern beat in between. And for some more rap and hip hop the album have Kaam Bhaari, Har Gham Mein Khushi Hai and Goriye

The most awaited hip hop soundtrack has been released. The movie featuring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt on lead role depicts the growing Hip-Hop culture in Mumbai which is scheduled to release this Valentines Day. The 18 track album started with Apna Time Aayega, the lingo and lyrics became popular within minuites of release. The beat changes makes it even more operative.

Ranveer Singh doing rap in the very next song Mere Gali Me with DIVINE and Naezy is a close approach to hip hop perfection. Though Ranveer was on a back foot when it comes to rap. TAK TAKI Sung by Pratibha Singh Baghel, the song is a slow melody in the avenue of fast beat. The melody is humming and arrangement is Lullaby.

DANKILA The album concludes with a powerful dance track in "Dankila". Sung by Prajakta Shukre, Shrinidhi Ghatate, Siddharth Mahadevan and Arunaja, It is fun to listen to, but compared to the high standards set by the other songs in the album, "Dankila" is low but it has it's own flavor.

"Music is the art to shift". Shifting emotions, trends and the process. To musicians like Giridhar Udupa, the fact works vice-versa. Instead of changing music he changed the trend by bringing countless modifications in an earthy simple instrument which caught youngsters at a great extent.

Performing with artists of multiple genres and in front of audience having diversifying taste, he has conquered every corner with his music loaded with abundant positive energy. Having the roots in Caranatic Classical Music he has spread his branches to different genres of world, collaborating with different artists in the most interesting ways you can imagine. His band Layatharanga is a result of this extended experience.

The variable sounds coming from variable percussion instruments making you to move you body in variably is a patent to Giridhar Udupa.

Not only the move but the influential beats in Ghatam from even the most far percussion instrument is what this musician is discovering.

First of all, “Layatharanga” has completed 20 years of its existence last month.

Congratulations for that. How do you see this journey so far?

Thank-You so much. Actually, Layatharanga was my dream project.

The team is more like family. The musicians in the band are connected from the school days. So whenever we play, music becomes more fun.

Our journey is being incredible because of many reasons and the most crucial of them is all of us are trained under the Caranatic Classical music. The second fact is we mix two different genre of music. Individually we have performed with every artist in the music industry. Where it could be a Bollywood musician or Caranatic musician or Hindustani Classical Musician, it’s a diversifying range of artists. From Pt. Ravishankar Ji to A.R. Rahman, our band members have performed with everyone. So, we bring changes to instruments we play which is derived from these great masters. And when we bring Caranatic, Western, Latin and everything together, the crowd enjoys the most. This brings the younger generation to classical music concert which is a big achievement for us.

As everything evolves in the spectrum of time, how do you see this evolution in Ghatam?

Actually Ghatam is a very simple instrument. Not one can create much sounds out of it. There is no sustain sound of Ghatam as you find (makes Dhuuuuuum sound) in Mridangam. As I play with lot of percussionists, I take influence from their instrument and try to bring different sound to Ghatam by bringing their technique and rhythm style to the instrument

apart from what has been played for years. I often try to adopt two extremities, like the drum and the base (Dhuuum-Takka Dhik-Dhik—Tak) which is not present in Caranatic Music. So I try to bring these little modification which amaze the audience. Suddenly they involve themselves and wonder what am I playing, this isn’t traditional caranatic style. This amazement somewhere brings the younger generation to Ghatam. We need to take the instrument to the young generation. Even I have some students whom I teach the instrument and they really enjoy that.

And not much people are aware that, Ghatam is only been made by a single family in the whole world. So we need to support them too.

Ghatam is being regarded as a Caranatic instrument, but you play with Hindustani Classical musicians as well. How different is to play with both classical forms?

Playing with Hindustani Classical musicians is always a challenge and I really enjoy that. By God’s grace I had the pleasure to play with one of the greatest of Hindustani Classical Musicians like Ustaad Amjad Ali Khaan Sahab or Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia or Vishwamohan Bhatt Ji etc. Playing with such maestros is tough as it is not always a Jugalbandi between Caranatic Style and Hindustani Style. I have played in Hindustani pattern adopting their rhythm structure with Hindustani Classical Artists. I have studied a bit of Hindustani Classical Music like the Tabla but even then it is not necessary as we need one full generation to master one form of music. So it is always a challenge to me and enjoy that.

You know, Emotions are very important in Music, so as a percussionist, how a percussion instrument is able to deliver, variable emotions?

When it comes to the Percussion instruments, the high energy in the rhythm which is existing.

And whenever I play I keep that energy inside me which is conveyed to the audience whenever I play in concert. And if we move forward, Music is always a synonym of happiness for me. So I play to spread happiness and positive energy. I cannot make my audience cry of my music. When I play badly they may cry, (Laughs) but I never do that. I am 100 percent sure that I make them happy and involve all my positive energy which is require in the present scenario of our life.

Do you have any other interest apart music?

There are two things, one is cricket. I love playing and watching Cricket. The second is movies.

What is next big project you are working on?

Fantastic, So any favorite cricketers?

(Laughs) Maybe Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble and of course Shikhar Dhawan, also he is very good friend of mine. He visited my house and even played Bansuri (bamboo Flute).

I am working for my foundation “The Udupa Foundation”, the festival we organise every year.

We want to take our classical music to every corner. To government schools, to the rural areas and to every possible doorstep. So I am busy taking care of the activities of my foundation are curating the Udupa Music Festival 2020.

So coming to the last question, What is Giridhar Udupa’s percussion for life?

Happiness and Positive Enegy!! It’s what Giridhar Udupa’s music all about.

If you start finding a voice which could be called as “Voice of India”, you will certainly land on Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar. But what if the voice needs a gender switch. You may think of Kishor Kumar or Mohammad Rafi, but their popularity below Kaveri is doubtful. Same phenomenon applies on Yesudas or M. Balamuralikrishna. Surely they are musical legend but they couldn’t cross the Narmada. So it would be quite difficult for you to find a voice which could vibrate Sutlej as well as Krishna.

This is the magnificence of Pt. Bhimsen Joshi. A voice which is the “Voice of India”. He was the only singer as classist who got so much popularity after Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. It is a dichotomy in the age of certainty that you may try to imitate his style of singing “Jo Bhaje Hari Ko Sada” after his concert. Many would find him a popular face just because his participation in public service films like “Mile Sur Mera Tumhara” or “Baaje Sargam” that aired in Doordarshan in the late eighties but it was him who brought beat to the Classical Music and improvised it in a well judicial way that it did not lose its originality and on the other hand took Classical music to common man. Indeed, Joshi knew that the dry and rigorous land of classical music needed the drip irrigation of alankars to keep the listener alive.

Though India witnesses many Classic legends in it’s timeline.

The voices of singers like Kumar Gandharva or Mallikarjun Mansur had a quicksilver quality and Pt. Jasraj has a spiritual soothing, but Joshi’s voice has a raw power which intruded his voice apart.

This boy, when he was 11 years old, was so much enchanted by the divine voice of Ustaad Abdul Karim Khan, that he ran away to absorb this art. Without money in his pockets, he wandered across India to find his Guru. After a long search, he reached Savai Gandharva also known as Rambhau Kundgolkar.

Bhimsen Ji served his Guru for years without even expecting anything. After testing the dedication of this small boy, Savai Gandharva was so much pleased that he opened all the treasures he had in front of Bhimsen. He used to practice for 18 hours.

This tremendous practice can be felt in the very first note of his performance. It was this tremendous practice which gave Bhimsen Ji the strength to sing any note without effort, shift from one note to another just like a lightening. Bhimsen Joshi had a voice suitable to all the types of music. Let it be Khayal, Thumri, Bhajan, Abhang, Tarana or a Natyageet. As a bridge between the world of the eternal sublime and the mundane, he has perhaps been among the most prolific musicians of our times. Indeed, he is said to have among the highest number of recordings of Hindustani vocal music.

And yet, the number of ragas that he favours is a finite set encompassing the likes of Multani, Purya Dhanashree, Ramkali, Miyan Ki Todi and Darbari Kanada among a few others. Within this lexicon, Panditji creates a universe of possibilities. The Bharat Ratna is now at 97th Birth Anniversary. The world hails to the soul voice.

From Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Little Champs 2009 to ARRived, how do you define your musical journey?

It has been a crazy ride so far. From an introvert nine year old who had zero expectations of even making it through the auditions; to an eighteen year old passionate musician with the sole aim of making it into the music industry as an eminent name. My parents have always made sure that I focus well on my training from the best Guru’s and Ustaad’s possible.

From being refused a break in a Bengali movie when at the age of 12, to being extremely lucky to have recorded for the man I've worshipped all my life - it's been a journey full of ups and downs, happiness, regrets, 40 FEBRUARY 2019

failed attempts, a few accomplishments , and lots of learning.

I thank my parents for being my pillars of strength and my guiding light at all times and my Guru’s who stood by me always.

You started your vocal training under Padmashree Ustad Rashid Khan, later joined ITC Sangeet Research Academy then prestigious KM Music Conservatory. How do you feel being around such Big Banners?

I am extremely fortunate to have such supportive parents who've never given a second thought even if it meant for them to push their bars a little too high , when it came to providing me

with the right kind of guidance - Musical or Academic. They made the huge decision of moving to Kolkata all the way from Assam just so I could learn music in the best of best places. I have been fortunate to be accepted in the academy at the age of 4.

The 'taaleem' I received there was priceless. Thereafter, I worked hard for three long years and then to qualify for the Auditions of ITC SRA to learn from maestros like Pandit Ulhas Kashalkar, Pandit Ajay Chakraborty, Vidushi Girija Devi, Vidushi Shubhra Guha, Ustaad Abdul Rashid Khan Saahab was more than a dream come true as a Junior Scholar. My years at the academy were my golden years.

Fortunately or unfortunately I had lost my voice completely around

the age of 13-14 and KM Music Conservatory gave me my voice back.

It was here that i came to know how to treat your body and voice like your musical instrument and all techniques about healthy use of the voice.

What else you like to do apart from being involved in music?

My parents have always made sure Academics are my priority. I am doing my graduation from Symbiosis Centre of Media and Communications, Pune - specialising in Public Relations, trying to strike a hard balance between Work and Studies.

I am a movie buff, totally enjoy drawing, a born foodie. I love vlogging - talking about things that intrigue me/ interest me around me, answering questions people have been asking me through social media, email etc. I love engaging with people out there and exchanging ideas.

You sing Folk, do Mashups and Covers, trained in Western Classical, well carries Indian Classical Music, your recent Jammin' Original with Legendary AR Rahman and Jonita gandhi got a tremendous response. How do you maintain this versatility?

Thank you so much for the compliment. I was very young when someone once asked me not to sing lata ji songs because according to them it wasn't my 'Genre'. I was too young to know what genre meant. But it just stuck to my head. Everytime i wanted to sing a Lata ji song I stopped since I was told it wasn't my genre.

One such day I came to realise the

fact that one of main reasons i sang was because I enjoyed it. If I love a song by Lata ji, if it makes me happy , vague terms like 'Genre' shouldn't have the power or right to stop me from singing it. I guess that was the turning point.

I love listening to all kinds of music folk , classical - hindustani, carnatic and western , bollywood, english pop, jazz, blues etc. I am very experimental as a person , so trying something out of my comfort zone thrills me. I work and work till I feel its the best I can do at the given moment. Later it is a bonus when I found that my experiments and work (though small) is appreciated and liked by people around me who matters the most.

Your validation makes me feel like I've been able to make my point. Thank You. I don’t know how to thank almighty for giving me the opportunity to sing the Original of the legend AR Rahman Sir, “NISH DIN” along with Jonita Didi. Initially

Such incidents hurt, brings pain and I want to speak out, contribute but did not know how to. Then I realised that Journalists write when they want to voice their opinion, actors act when they want to convey some message so we can sing and then came this project my Jim Ankan Deka.

After “Aawaz”, one of my song - “Ya Devi” – Celebrating Womanhood is a music video which was released with an aim to sensitize people of the various Avatars of a woman in this society. Let’s salute Women. The lyrics have been taken from the Devi Mantra that describes the various qualities of Devi Ma and arranged by me.

Last year I released “Ja Ud Ja”. The

lyrics was written and I also tuned it.

Here I wanted to express my feeling…. feeling of freedom from all pressures of life and fly in the open , all pressure released like a bird in the open air. A story that describes imprisoned mental state of human being (a student then) when under stress, urging the mind to take a leap and change the situation towards freedom. This was appreciated and won some awards etc.

At what age did you start playing Violin? How did your elementary training with the instrument go?

I started playing violin when I was 6 years old, in the Suzuki method. I progressed rapidly, finishing the 10 books in 3 years, faster than anyone had or has ever done in the program where I studied. I loved to practice from a young age-my teacher says I am the only student he has ever had to tell not to practice so much, but I just loved it!! I was concertmaster of the Memphis Youth Symphony Orchestra, and was offered a violin scholarship at Vanderbilt University.

You herself is recognized as virtuoso classical violinist but whom do you admire?

I have many violin heroes, the first being Itzhak Perlman. It was after attending a Perlman

Although the type and style of music I play has evolved over the years and continues to evolve, the common thread in my playing is heart. Heart and emotion in my music are essential. I feel that the tone expresses the heart so much(as Dr. Suzuki said, “beautiful tone, beautiful heart), so my sound(or tone) is very very important to me.

Also, as I have started playing more rock and pop music, I think the lyrics in my head as I play as a way to convey the emotion of a song. People often say they feel like they can hear the words in my playing. When I record, I look at the lyrics, not at a musical chart. This is a very unique approach, but I feel it helps me express the emotion and heart of a song.

Did you choose Violin or the Violin chose you?

I always say, violinists are born, not made. I feel I was created to play the violin, so in that way the violin chose me. Perlman’s violin playing at that concert when I was five awakened the inborn violinist in me, and the rest is history!!

What is Susan's Percussion for life?

Susan’s Percussion for life. I will take that question to mean what is the rhythm of my lifeor what keeps me going, my life’s heartbeat, my purpose. I was made to play the violin, to create excellent music music that extends love, peace, healing, and light to the world-music that expresses what words cannot in the universal language of love.

Every soul that loves music and ghazal knows how soothing it is to listen to Jagjit Singh’s layered voice that makes love with the music and the words, striking the right chords inside every beating heart.

This month of love has witnessed the birth of the most lovable artist of all times, Jagmohan Singh Dhiman, making it more worthwhile of celebrations. Born into a middle class family, almost 80 years from today, even his father wished him to become an engineer, though always encouraging him to worship music.

He was trained by Pandit Chaganlal Sharma and later by Ustaad Jamaal Khan of the Senia Gharana, mastering the several prominent styles of Hindustani classical, including Dhrupad,Khayal and Thumri. Also, he holds a post graduate degree in history from Kurukshetra University, Haryana.

His unique love for music and never ending dedication moved him to Bombay in 1965, where his career took a great leap. Following an year, he met Chitra Dutta, another great music and ghazal artist of the time and both tied knot, later becoming the first and most commercially successful and popular husband and wife duo of the music industry. The release of the album 'The unforgettable' turned them into stars. Together they continued to compose and sing the tunes that every lip could sync with. Their music stayed and words echoed even after the concerts got over. With him, music was never sophisticated to hear, words could be understood by all, it was no more beyond comprehension, but something that cannot be comprehended was his way to connect the beads of words into the thread of music always, beautifully. At the peak of his career though, he was left shattered because of the sudden demise of his only child, Vivek. He couldn't touch music for almost a year and his wife decided to forgo music for all her life. Later on, as time passed he chose to spend his solitude with his Tanpura, allowing music to heal his wounds just as his voice healed the world.

Unlike the rest of the ghazal singers of his time, only he had and still has the maximum number of youth who admired him, not only because of his talent but also as he chose not to stick to the traditional ways but tried successful experiments. As Talat Aziz once said, "He brought Guitar into ghazal, experimented with non-traditional rhythm patterns and simplified the tunes making them more melodiou...". The Maestro Jagjit Singh once also said "I ensure that first I understand the meaning of ghazal and then expect the common man to appreciate it.“ And surely only he could turn the common man's drawing room into a Darbar and extended the aristocratic mehfil to the middle class homes, signifying that art is something that can be accessed and enjoyed by all. Be it a Bhajan, folk song Ghazal or a filmy note, he could always touch the right emotions and let you either smile wide or weep. From the lot of his sparkling collection of contribution to the music industry, some of his works include albums like "the latest”, “someone somewhere”, “Mirage” and "Silsiley". He is the only composer and singer to have composed and recorded songs written by former Prime Minister of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee – also a poet – in two albums, Nayi Disha (1999) and Samvedna (2002). Padma Bhushan Jagjit Singh worked for about five decades and created about 80 albums in his life span of 70 years. Also doing about 30 concerts with his forever friend Ghulam Ali defying all the manmade laws of borders.

There is an ocean of artists who distribute their contents online on social media for free and are sometimes poised to the fame industry of the spectrum. Josie Stickdorn can be seen as one of that artist but it's just the part before the interval. The artist isn't taming for fame or attribution instead just practicing each day on social media. I FIDDLES How did you start finger-style on Guitar?

Being a showstopper at 17, what are your near future plans?

We used to have a guitar with us that belonged to my father. He couldn’t even play with it, because he was to lazy to actually start teaching himself.

But I never had the commitment to start playing guitar too. At some point I got a guitar as a gift and I taught myself basic play through youtubevideos. After that, I discovered fingerstyle and I really wanted to learn it. Again I used the same way to teach myself, while watching YouTube videos of several players and teachers.

I would love to improve my voice and become better in singing. I think it’s an awesome combination of being a good guitarist and a nice singer. I don’t think that you could have a bright future as a solo artist, with just playing an instrument.

At the age of 17, you got a chance to share the stage with Mike Shinoda. How did that feel?

At first I had to play a song completely alone and in the beginning I was very nervous. But when the crowd started to sing along, it was totally fun.

When I was on stage together with Mike, everything was much easier and I wasn’t really nervous anymore. Having the opportunity to play on stage with such a talented and nice person was very unique!

How much credit you give to Instagram or YouTube for all that you have achieved yet?

Instagram is very important to me at the moment. In contrast to YouTube, artists can reach you much easier.

They can just send you a message or they could like and comment your videos very easily. I prefer having a bunch of good videos on Instagram then on YouTube and I definitely have to post more videos.
