HOW AN EXECUTIVE DBA DIFFERS FROM A TRADITIONAL PHD

Executive DBA

Focuses on “applied research” that applies existing theory to conduct rigorous analysis of real-world problems and opportunities “in-situ”

Intellectually curious practitioners

Targeted at experienced senior executives Research contributes to developing practical knowledge and new insights for business practice, primarily for use by practitioners

Traditional PhD

Focuses on “basic research” that develops new theory and specialized knowledge, often in isolation of practice (e.g. “labs”)

Intellectually curious academics

Age and experience are flexible; often completed at an early career stage with limited business experience

Research contributes to developing and advancing theory/scientific knowledge; primarily for use by academics
