WELCOME

Dear Pepperdine Parents and Family Members,

It is with great joy that I welcome you and your child to Pepperdine University as you embark together on this exciting voyage of knowledge, faith, and self-discovery. As a Christian institution, we know that education is about more than just academic achievement and advancement; it requires the nurturing of the whole person—mind, body, and soul. Pepperdine’s commitment to this belief sets us apart from other universities across the globe, and it is likely a major factor in your decision to entrust us with your greatest treasure. Our mission is to strengthen your children for lives of purpose, service, and leadership. And as the parents of three Seaver graduates, Joline and I know full well the joy and pain of watching our children both conquer obstacles and struggle to overcome the semester’s latest challenge. The unique perspectives of our children continue to help guide our family’s philanthropy as we seek to model Pepperdine’s motto “Freely ye received, freely give” (Matthew 10:8).

As the family of new students, your partnership and generosity make a tremendous impact on our provision of the best possible education and experience. Your commitment of time, talent, and treasure to Pepperdine will serve as an inspiration to others, and your child will develop and carry that sense of giving and gratitude long after they matriculate. In using this resource to settle your child into their new space, I challenge you to identify areas of interest for your family, and then engage with us however you are able!

Welcome to Pepperdine.

Warmly,

A MESSAGE from the Dean of Seaver College

At Seaver College, we engage the mind and the soul of our students by introducing them to scholarship grounded in current research and timeless truths. It is our hope that in fulfilling this goal we empower the next generation to engage the present with insight and humility while equipping its members to address the challenges of the future with wisdom, conviction, and a focus on service.

With these objectives in mind, Seaver College’s campus community fosters a transformative student experience that bridges the gap between theory and practice—student and professional. In the process, we are devoted to nurturing a culture of belonging, where each individual can refine and excel in their God-given abilities. By creating an environment where learning and scholarship are integrated with faith, students discern their vocation alongside Christ’s teachings of humble servitude.

It is my sincere hope that this guide allows you to support your student’s journey with both information and clarity as we collectively support their continued education and holistic development into thriving, purposeful leaders and adults.

Sincerely,

SEAVER COLLEGE FAST FACTS

A PARENT PERSPECTIVE

The first year at Pepperdine will be an exciting, challenging, and transforming experience for both you and your student. Parents play a critical role in student adjustment, so it is important to be equipped with helpful advice and strategies you can use to be supportive.

SOCIAL AND ACADEMIC ADJUSTMENT

Homesickness is the most common challenge during the first year. Students indicate that it helps if family members keep in close contact by phone, email, and sending care packages and letters. Another area of adjustment is having a roommate and all aspects of sharing the space— especially if the student is accustomed to having their own room. Students recommend that new students wait a couple of months before going home for the first time, citing Thanksgiving to be a good first-visit goal—spending time on campus helps them connect with the Pepperdine community. Finally, going home again can be challenging because everyone has changed—the student, the family, friends, as well as the community. Encourage your student to get involved in extracurricular activities

to help them further develop their leadership and social skills. Listen with an open mind to your student’s concerns. Oftentimes the academic pace can be an adjustment, and it may be overwhelming at first. And although it is important to offer your student advice, college is a time for your student to grow, so it is also necessary to allow your student to make their own choices.

HAVING A CAR: PROS AND CONS

Although it is easier to get around Los Angeles if you have a car, there are alternative ways to do so. If a student does not have a car, they are more likely to develop a strong connection to the Pepperdine University community—especially if you live in Southern California and think they will come home often. Parking is very tight, but it is free. Students are also able to rent cars by the hour by contacting our Public Safety department.

14 | Parent and Family Guide 2023–2024

FINANCES

The amount of spending money a student needs varies among students. Many things to do on campus or in the Los Angeles area do not cost additional money. Frequent expenses include: recreational activities, occasional meals out, Greek organizations that require membership dues ranging from $500 to $1,000 each semester, and other campus events.

STUDY ABROAD

For almost 60 years, Pepperdine’s nationally ranked International Programs has provided unparalleled global educational experiences that allow for adventure, personal growth, academic rigor, and a guided path to becoming a globally minded citizen. According to the Institute of International Education, Pepperdine is among the top in the nation for study abroad participation. Approximately 80 percent of Seaver students study abroad during their time as a Wave, making studying abroad a true Pepperdine tradition.

From our campus steps away from the White House in Washington, DC, to our homestay program in Buenos Aires, to one of our four locations in Europe, we can help you find the program that best suits your student. We provide opportunities for internships, general education courses, service learning, experiential learning, and cultural immersion. In addition to the offerings at our global campuses, we also offer faculty-led summer programs to places such as East Africa, Fiji, Jordan, New Zealand, and Spain. The 2024–2025 academic year application deadline is noon on Monday, September 25, 2023.

THE PEPPERDINE FIGHT SONG

We are the Waves of orange and blue, Waves will Waves will crush you!

We’re gonna fight! fight! fight! For Pepperdine

We’re gonna win for the orange and the blue

The mountains and the sea inspire victory In the Waves of Malibu.

We’re gonna fight! fight! fight! For Pepperdine

And show our pride now for everyone to see Come on and raise your voice to show the world your choice

And cheer our team to victory – VICTORY!!!

CAMPUS LIVING

CAMPUS HOUSING

The mission of the Office of Housing and Residence Life is to establish a community that fosters social, academic, and spiritual growth. As a result, all new students, including all transfer students, are required to live on campus and have a meal plan for four semesters. The only exception applies to spring transfer students who are required to live on campus for one semester (the spring term when they begin Pepperdine).

We believe the relationships and community built during these first years of attending Pepperdine are vital to the college experience. The Housing and Residence Life program provides an atmosphere that empowers students to make connections between faith, living, and learning within a diverse community.

HOUSING PORTAL

The Pepperdine University Housing Portal is a one-stop shop for students to apply for housing, search for and select roommates, enroll in a meal plan, and view their room assignments.

Admitted students should check their Pepperdine email accounts regularly during the summer for information on when the housing portal will open to them and important deadlines.

SEAVER COLLEGE HOUSING APPLICATION PROCESS

Timeline for Newly Admitted Students:

• May 15, 2023: Housing Portal opened

• The Housing Portal went live on May 15. Students must be accepted to the University, submit the “Intent to Enroll” form, and pay the enrollment deposit (through WaveNet) before access to the portal is granted.

• June 16, 2023: Deadline for contracts and roommate selection

• Students who submit housing applications after the deadline are still guaranteed housing, but they will not have the option of selecting a roommate nor are they guaranteed notification of their placement by July 3.

• July 3, 2023: Placements confirmed via email.

WHAT PARENTS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT FERPA

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974 is a federal law that protects the rights of students by defining who has access to student educational records. Now that your student is in college, FERPA laws transfer ownership of the educational records directly to the student; therefore, parents have no inherent rights to view, change, or control the student’s educational records.

Unless your student gives you access to their academic and/or financial records, we will not be able to share any related information with you. Academic records include registration, schedule, and grades. The student account is a detailed record of all costs of attendance, miscellaneous charges, and related financial assistance. Students and those to

whom they have granted access will be able to view, pay, and update student account information online through WaveNet’s Student Center.

Please ask your student to grant you guest access to their account! This is the only way that you will be able to access your student’s information including account balance, payments, refunds, financial assistance, and/or grades. Your student may designate you as a guest user and will determine your level of access. We encourage you to speak directly to your student about this service.

Scan the code at left for more information about the University’s administrative services (“OneStop”), or call 310.506.7999.

22 | Parent and Family Guide 2023–2024

STUDENT ACCOUNTS

The online student account serves as the official student bill. The account will be updated automatically with every charge or credit posted to the student account. The amount due will be available by viewing the student account online through WaveNet and will reflect the charges, credits, amounts due, and specific due dates for each.

Students are responsible for viewing their student account online, noting the account balances due, and making the appropriate arrangements for payment to be received by the due date. If you as a parent wish to receive email notifications regarding the account activity, please have your student grant you guest access to their WaveNet account and sign you up for billing reminder emails. You may also ask your student to grant you access to Account Detail so that if you have any questions and wish to contact Student Accounts, we will be able to discuss the account with you.

Scan the code at left for more information about student accounts.

Our diverse team is skilled in working with college-age patients and provides a professional and welcoming environment for students seeking care.

The SHC provides health services to any enrolled Pepperdine student, regardless of insurance type. Available services include a wide range of everyday health needs, including men’s and women’s health, care for illness and injury, immunizations, injections, labs, nutrition, respiratory problems, and dermatology.

The SHC also offers specialized clinics such as vaccination, travel medicine, and STI/HIV testing.

Students can call 310.506.4315, option 3, for more information about available health services or to schedule an appointment.

Please note that although the SHC does not bill insurance directly, the center provides a walkout statement (superbill) to patients and directions regarding how to seek reimbursements from their health insurance plan.

UNIVERSITY HEALTH INSURANCE AND IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENT

Pepperdine University requires that all students, both domestic and international (including those studying abroad), provide proof of a US-based health insurance plan or enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). To meet this requirement, new and returning students must select one of two options on their AHP Insurance Dashboard each academic year: confirm SHIP option by clicking ENROLL button or provide proof of an existing US-based health insurance plan by clicking the WAIVE button. Students must also upload their immunization records in their health portal.

STUDENT COUNSELING

The Counseling Center provides free, confidential services for Pepperdine students. Students come to the Counseling Center for a variety of concerns including homesickness, depression, anxiety, relationship problems, eating concerns, and addictive behaviors. CAREER SERVICES

CAREER CENTER

The Career Center is committed to assisting students with career exploration and planning while also helping them build meaningful professional experience in school and after graduation. Students can engage early with professional development by taking a first-year career education course, participating in job shadow days, and joining local and national company tours. Students also have access to an artificial intelligence resume review platform (VMock), one of the most extensive career video libraries (Roadtrip Nation), and a University-specific professional mentoring platform (PeppConnect). Our programs, resources, and tools are designed to create the foundation for career readiness skills that are needed to secure internships and professional experiences.

During the fall, Pepperdine students can attend two industry-focused fairs and in the spring, they can engage with employers in one, larger Spring Expo. Outside of fairs, the Career Center hosts ongoing experiential learning opportunities for students with on-campus employer visits, resume review drop-in hours, mock interviews, job and internship search strategy sessions, career treks, and job shadow days, to help equip them with the skills for any career they choose.

A team of Industry specialists provide tailored coaching support for students seeking internships, jobs, or graduate school admission. A number of on-campus recruiting events are held throughout the year and students can access numerous opportunities through Handshake. Special offerings like industry-specific networking events, the Career Coaching Program, and Pepperdine Career Week help students prepare for the world of work and gain the confidence employers recognize.

CAMPUS SAFETY

The Department of Public Safety (DPS) is committed to providing and maintaining a safe and secure environment while respecting the rights and dignity of individuals using programs and facilities of Pepperdine University.

Specific services include 24/7 security patrols, emergency response, threat assessment, building security, parking/traffic enforcement, campus safety escorts, event support, investigations, and dissemination of safety-related information. Other services include roadside assistance for problems such as vehicle lockouts and jump starts, the Safe Rides Program, and management of the University’s fire and lifesaving equipment.

We also encourage the use of the LiveSafe app, which offers users a variety of campus safety resources as well as the ability to communicate directly with DPS and 911, if needed. This app allows your student to report concerns anonymously.

SAFE RIDES

Pepperdine’s Safe Rides program exists to provide a safer community. If a student does not feel safe in an off-campus location, regardless of the circumstances, they are encouraged to call DPS for assistance at 310.506.4441.

DPS will facilitate your student’s safe return to campus by using the appropriate resources. This is not a confidential service, but students should not fear punishment for seeking assistance when in an unsafe situation.

When they say... What do they mean?

AC

Appleby Center is a building where many classes are held, near the Weisman Museum of Art. This building has two floors. When you are on the second floor, you are in the Appleby Center (AC). When you go downstairs in this building, you will be in the Rockwell Academic Center (RAC).

BROCK HOUSE

This is where the president of Pepperdine University and his family live. The house is up on the hill where the big American flag flutters. Our University president is Jim Gash and his wife’s name is Joline.

CAC

Cultural Arts Center, the classroom building between the Weisman museum and Smothers Theatre.

CCB

Center for Communication and Business, which can be found at the top of the hill above the HAWC and Upper Residential Road.

CHAPEL

Chapel, a required part of the Pepperdine student experience, is designed to welcome students into our community. First-year and second-year residential students will explore a variety topics through the lens of the Christian faith.

DOLORES

Dolores is the nickname for a statue of a girl that was originally a part of the central fountain at the original Pepperdine Campus in South Los Angeles. See: “The Rock.”

THE HAWC

The HAWC was named after Howard A. White, the fifth president of Pepperdine, hence the initials HAWC (C is for Center). It is a popular student hangout, open 24 hours a day during the regular school year for your student to play pool, drink coffee, and socialize. This building houses Student Activities.

SEAVER COLLEGE

Seaver College is Pepperdine’s college of letters, arts, and sciences. It is one of five schools that make up Pepperdine University. The others are: the Caruso School of Law, the Graziadio Business School, the Graduate School of Education and Psychology, and the School of Public Policy.

JERRY’S TREE

Jerry’s Tree is named after Geraldyne Faries, wife of the late Judge McIntyre Faries. Both were benefactors of Pepperdine. This is a very common meeting place on campus. It is located in the main parking lot, outside the library and just above the fountain.

JOSLYN PLAZA, MULLIN TOWN SQUARE

These spaces are the site of Elkins Auditorium, the largest lecture hall at Seaver College. They comprise the outdoor areas around the beautiful fountain.

ONESTOP

OneStop is an office dedicated to serving your student. Your student can get information about financial aid, registration, student accounts, and the like, as well as purchase discounted movie and amusement park tickets. OneStop is located on the second floor of TAC (same level as Joslyn Plaza).

PLC

The Pendleton Learning Center includes classrooms that are being remodeled to be a part of the library facilities. There is a door just to the left of the library entrance that will take you there. Another entrance is by the amphitheatre.

RAC

The Rockwell Academic Center is the bottom floor to the Appleby Center. The Natural Science Division is housed here.

SAC

The Student Assistance Center houses the Office of Student Accessibility, Student Health Center, Counseling Center, and Housing and Residence Life. It is located above the Center for Communication and Business (CCB)

THE LIGHT HOUSE

The Light House is a student lounge located on the second floor of the Tyler Campus Center on the Malibu campus. This newly imagined space features a prominent lounge and stunning light features reminiscent of its namesake. It serves as a gathering place for a variety of student activities including spiritual life gatherings, Student Government Association (SGA) meetings, and fraternity and sorority functions. This is where students daily pick up their mail and enjoy a healthy snack and conversation.

STUDENT ACTIVITY CENTER

The Student Activity Center is located in the HAWC on the first floor. It is home to all student activities, events, and organizations.

TAC

The Thornton Administrative Center is the building next to the library and is the first building you see when you drive up Seaver Drive. It houses many of the administrative offices at Pepperdine (the President’s Office, the Admission Office, Office of Financial Assistance, Parents Program, Registrar, Student Accounts, etc.). Also note that OneStop is located on the second floor.

TCC

THE ROCK

The Rock is the Malibu Campus version of Dolores. Student groups are welcome to paint the rock to show Pepperdine spirit.

The Tyler Campus Center houses many of the offices and services your student will visit the most. The TCC is home to the Waves Cafe cafeteria (the “caf”), Nature’s Edge, the mailroom, the Student Government Association, the Career Center, Student Employment, and International Programs.
