Open Tuesday–Sunday, 11 am–5 pm, and on most Smothers Theatre performance days until showtime

HOLD MY HAND IN YOURS

September 6, 2025–March 29, 2026

Across a wide range of practices in contemporary art, the hand appears over and over again as a symbolic image, nodding to its role as an artistic tool par excellence. As this exhibition underscores, the hand also alludes to forms of labor, intimacy, and care that resonate beyond the realm of art-making. Christine Mitchell Adams and Samantha Roth record the caresses, grips, and tugs of mothers and infants alike, while Karl Haendel embodies tenderness and vulnerability in his large-scale portraits. In Yvonne Rainer’s landmark Hand Movie (1966), she uses her fingers to dance while she is otherwise immobilized post-surgery, allowing her hand to stand in for the whole body, as do delicate fingerprints and scratches in Carmen Argote’s most recent paintings. Elana Mann sculpts noisemakers that look like hands, drawing a crucial connection between speech and action, while the duo Christine Sun Kim and Thomas Mader employ their hands (and faces) as vehicles of communication that exceed the capacity of spoken language.

Spanning painting, sculpture, drawing, performance, and video, Hold My Hand in Yours foregrounds the hand as a crucial agent of touch, connection, and social exchange. Participating artists include Christine Mitchell Adams,

Kelly Akashi, Carmen Argote, Karl Haendel, Christine Sun Kim and Thomas Mader, Elana Mann, Roksana Pirouzmand, Yvonne Rainer, Samantha Roth, and Stephanie Syjuco.

Image: Elana Mann, Histophone, 2016, bronze, 5 ¼ x 13 ¼ x 5 ½ inches. Courtesy of the artist. Photo: Nash Baker. © 2025 Elana Mann

Major exhibitions are held in the Gregg G. Juarez Gallery and Ron Wilson-Designer Gallery in the Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art. Hold My Hand in Yours is supported by a generous grant from the Pasadena Art Alliance.

The museum is always free and open to the public. For current hours or more information about exhibitions, programs, and accessibility, call 310.506.4851, visit arts.pepperdine.edu/museum, or follow the Weisman Museum on Facebook and Instagram @weismanmuseumofart @weismanmuseumofart

Bright Star

Music, book, and story by Steve Martin

Music, lyrics, and story by Edie Brickell

Kelly Todd, Director

Inspired by a true story and featuring the Tony-nominated score by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, Broadway’s Bright Star tells a sweeping tale of love and redemption set against the rich backdrop of the American South in the 1920s and ’40s. When literary editor Alice Murphy meets a young soldier just home from World War II, he awakens her longing for the child she once lost. The Luciana and Daniel Forge Musical The Light

in the Piazza

Music and lyrics by Adam Guettel Book by Craig Lucas

Cathy Thomas-Grant, Director

Ida Nicolosi, Vocal and Music Director Beau Benson, Conductor

Summer 1953: Margaret Johnson, an elegant and strong-willed Southern woman, has taken her daughter, Clara, on a vacation to Italy. Neither age nor language nor familial disapproval can stop Clara’s whirlwind love affair with a young Italian gentleman. As Clara and Fabrizio fall into each others’ arms, Margaret must grapple with the question of whether to disclose Clara’s devastating secret to Fabrizio’s family. With soaring operatic melodies, The Light in the Piazza is a story about mothers and daughters, fathers and sons, and the deeply intertwined emotions of love and loss. Winner of six Tony Awards in 2005, including Best Musical and Best Book, this remarkable story of love, loss, and forgiveness is the perfect final project for director Cathy Thomas-Grant as she steps into retirement after 31 years with the theatre program.
