Welcome Note

At Peponi House, we believe in nurturing talent and encouraging our pupils to aim high. To support those with exceptional abilities, we offer a carefully structured scholarship preparation programme from Years 6 to 8. This programme helps to identify and develop pupils with the potential to excel, providing them with tailored guidance and enrichment opportunities.

Our pupils move on to a wide range of senior schools, including Peponi Secondary, other leading schools in Kenya, and prestigious institutions in the UK and beyond. To prepare them for the varied scholarship processes these schools require, we offer high-quality, personalised support. Success in these scholarships depends not only on ability but also on dedication, enthusiasm, and a willingness to go the extra mile.

In the final term of Year 6, all pupils are encouraged to explore our scholarship sessions in areas that spark their interest. These sessions are open to everyone and run on a trial basis until midway through Term 1 of Year 7. At that point, our teachers work closely with each pupil to assess their suitability for the full scholarship programme.

A detailed overview of the scholarships we prepare candidates for, along with the key criteria for each, can be found at the end of this brochure.

We expect a great deal from our scholars, and in turn, we promise to give them the very best support. We want them to be inspired, to strive for excellence, and to become role models within our school community. They will be guided by our exceptional teachers—ensuring they are fully supported on their journey to success.

Academic Scholarship

Academic scholarships represent the highest level of recognition awarded by senior schools, but they are not given based on intelligence alone. They are a testament to years of dedication, hard work, and a deep-seated passion for learning, with the expectation that successful candidates will continue to lead by example—demonstrating the qualities of a scholar throughout their secondary education and beyond.

At Peponi House, we aim to support pupils who embody these qualities, guiding them through a challenging yet rewarding preparation process in their journey towards academic scholarships at schools in Kenya and around the world.

Overview Requirements

We seek pupils who are not only academically strong but who also demonstrate intellectual curiosity and acuity. They should be consistently performing at an exceptional level—evident in impressive results in internal progress exams and standardised assessments, displaying high effort in their studies, and showing a willingness to engage with learning beyond the classroom.

Scholarship candidates are expected to be avid readers, interested in a broad range of literature, and capable of forming their own perspectives on the world around them. A keen awareness of current affairs, a willingness to discuss and debate ideas while maintaining a sensitivity to different perspectives are also valuable qualities.

Expectations

Preparing for an academic scholarship requires more than just excelling in core subjects like English, mathematics, and the sciences. It involves developing higher-level thinking skills, tackling complex problems, and embracing challenges that demand resilience and determination. This is a demanding journey, and candidates must be prepared to dedicate additional time and effort to their studies.

The process is rigorous, but the rewards extend far beyond the scholarship itself. Those who commit to this challenge will gain invaluable skills, increased academic confidence, and a mindset that will serve them well as they progress through their education.

Our Commitment

Our scholarship preparation program is designed to stretch and challenge pupils beyond the standard curriculum. Through structured academic enrichment, problem-solving tasks, and interview preparation, we help them develop the higher-level thinking skills needed for success.

For pupils who are eager to push themselves, take on new challenges, and embrace academic excellence, our scholarship preparation program provides the support and guidance needed to help them succeed.

Music Scholarship

Overview

Before going for a music scholarship, one has to be sure that music is already a significant part of their life and that they are committed to pursuing it further. They also need to have musical talent that is significantly higher than their peers. Teachers will assess their talent and provide guidance accordingly.

Music is a broad subject, and there are many types of musicians. If a pupil is recommended as a music scholar, they should consider the following questions to focus on their scholarship potential:

▪ Who are you as a musician and what do you consider your musical strengths?

▪ What kind of musicians are you? (Classical, Pop, Jazz, Composer, Folk or a combination… Instrumentalist, singer or a combination)

▪ Do you have your own intrinsic self-drive and passion?

▪ Do you have a consistent track record of performing at a level above your peers over a long period of time?

General Scholarship Requirement

Scholarship requirements vary widely as different institutions place emphasis on different aspects of music. It is essential to research what the school you are applying to values and whether it aligns with your musical profile and personality.

However, there are general requirements that most institutions consider:

▪ A very high performance standard on at least one instrument, with a second minor instrument as an added advantage.

▪ Minimum performance standards set by music exam boards. Grade 5 on major boards (ABRSM, LCM, Trinity, Rock School, MTB) is a common benchmark. While taking the exams is not mandatory, demonstrating the ability at this level is necessary.

▪ Strong sight-reading or sight-singing skills.

▪ Good aural ability and listening skills.

▪ A music performance portfolio of pieces to present on the scholarship day, demonstrating long-term progress.

▪ Evidence of consistent proactivity in music life at school.

▪ The ability to work effectively as part of a team.

▪ A second study instrument at a good standard (generally around Grade 3 level) is often required.

▪ General knowledge of music is expected.

▪ Some institutions require practical exams passed from various music boards.

▪ Some require theory exams passed from various music boards.

▪ Some require knowledge of harmony and basic chords on the keyboard or guitar.

Expectations

Depending on individual strengths and scholarship requirements, candidates should take the following steps:

▪ Choose which instrument(s) and areas of strength will be their primary focus.

▪ Create and maintain a music portfolio.

▪ Identify areas that need improvement and work on them consistently.

Our Commitment

▪ We proactively identify potential music scholars and approach them in Year 6.

▪ We provide guidance to those interested in the music scholarship, assessing whether they meet the general requirements.

▪ We run scholarship sessions specifically for pupils who have demonstrated consistent potential. These sessions include music appreciation, theory, and performance soirées as appropriate.

▪ Potential scholars are required to show full commitment to the music scholarship program to continue participating in these sessions.

Next Steps

Depending on who you are as a musician and the scholarship requirements you generally will need to do the following;

▪ Choose which instrument/instruments and areas of strength will be your lead.

▪ Create and maintain a portfolio.

▪ Identify areas you need work on.
