Please remember that all staff are here to help with any queries. Each child has an allocated Form Tutor. In Years 6, 7 & 8 the form groups are much smaller. The Form Tutor is the first point of contact for all matters. Any matter can be escalated to the child’s Head of Phase and then matters can be addressed to the relevant SLT Member. Complaints are dealt with under the Complaints Policy found on our website. If you need to send a message to your child’s Form Tutor, please write a note in your child’s school diary, which is checked every day. Please also make use of email. Staff will endeavour to reply to your emails within 48 hours; however, this is not always possible if they have a heavy teaching commitment on a particular day. Email addresses for Members of Staff will be their initials followed by @peponihouse.sc.ke. For example, Mr. Ross will be ‘jcr@peponihouse.sc.ke’.
Please see the full list of staff email addresses on pages 8 & 9. The only exceptions are: enjuguna@peponischool.org (Bursar) office@peponihouse.sc.ke, (Mrs. Naomi Muchiri) head@peponihouse.sc.ke (Mrs. Tracy Handford) dha@peponihouse.sc.ke (Mr Sam Crews) dhp@peponihouse.sc.ke (Mr Graeme Anderson) hoj@peponihouse.sc.ke (Mrs Sophie Ross) musicdepartment@peponihouse.sc.ke (Ms Serah Karimi) admin@peponihouse.sc.ke (Mrs. Rose Kibe) nurse@peponihouse.sc.ke

MEETING STAFF
All teachers with direct responsibility for the pastoral care of pupils are normally in their classrooms soon after 7:30am, so that it is possible for parents to have a quick word before school begins. If you need an opportunity for a private discussion with a teacher, this should be arranged for a mutually convenient time. Many staff will be around at the end of the school day for instance. Parents Meetings are also held in terms 1 and 2 to facilitate useful dialogue. We are keen to encourage communication between school and home to enable a positive and happy partnership. However, please note that meetings will not be arranged during lessons or other formal school time. Thank you.
SCHOOL COMMUNICATION WITH PARENTS
The school uses 5 methods of communication:
1. Homework Diary - This is for sharing massages between the parents and form teachers
2. Management Information System (MIS) - Information emails
3. MIS Parent Portal - Data about your child including reports
4. Sharepoint - Curriculum, Music, Sports, Trips and other information for parents
5. Teams - Curriculum information and resources for pupils are also accessible to parents by request
6. SMS - Communication outside of the school day, including residential trips
We operate a SMS alert system to communicate efficiently with parents should the need arise. This system is used especially when pupils go away outside of school hours and enables us to communicate quickly and effectively. Please ensure the school has the correct mobile numbers for both parents by checking your parent portal.
THE SCHOOL MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM (MIS)
The school uses iSAMS as the central Management Information System (MIS). This is where we store all pupil data. Parents have access to a parent portal through which information is shared, including the sharing of written reports. Peponi House uses Microsoft Teams for Education as the online learning platform. This is where homework and resources are shared.
Sharepoint is used as a portal for sharing resources with parents such as information from the PTA.
For questions relating to iSAMS Parent Portal, Sharepoint and SMS please email: ithelpdesk@peponischools.com
DATA SHARING & DATA PROTECTION
We comply with the Kenya Data Protection Act (2019). School Operators Ltd. is a registered Data Controller. The School’s Data Protection Officer can be contacted at dpo@peponihouse.sc.ke
It is vital that you give all the correct data about your child and family details such as email addresses and telephone numbers. Please update when necessary on the Parent Portal (more information on how to update your contact details will be shared). Each term you will be prompted to update your details.
We also require 2 Emergency Contacts in case we can’t get hold of either Parent. Please change details on the Parent Portal, if there are any:
• Changes in family circumstances
• Changes in address and telephone numbers
• Changes in contact numbers and/or email addresses
• Factors which might have a bearing on the work, behaviour or emotional state of your child
• The School’s Data Protection policy can be found on the School Website.
SCHOOL PRACTICALITIES
ARRIVAL
The school day begins at 7:50am with Registration. School is open from 7:30am and the gates close at 7:55am. If children arrive late, they must sign in at the Office, so that our attendance registers can be amended. Please try to be punctual as this supports your child in a happy, calm and orderly start to the day.
COLLECTION
Please do not collect your children from the classrooms. Children will be available at the car park from:
3:10pm Years 1 and 2 From the Pre-Prep car park
3:50pm Years 3 - 8 From the main car park
If your child is going home with someone else, you must inform the School Office (office@peponihouse.sc.ke) in good time. Please do not be late for collection unless unavoidably delayed; this can cause distress. If children are collected late they will be looked after in the Homework Club room. Please keep in touch with changes to arrangements if possible.
All parents and drivers will be courteous and considerate to all staff and parents. All children attending Bumblebees and other activities are to be collected from the front of the school.
RECOGNISING TRUSTED ADULTS
All adults on school property must wear the correct lanyards:
Staff Blue lanyards All Staff have completed thorough checks and can supervise children
Parents White lanyards Parents can be unaccompanied but must not supervise children other than their own unless the school has explicit consent.
Visitors Red lanyards All visitors must be accompanied and cannot supervise children
REQUESTS FOR LEAVE OF ABSENCE
Schools, not parents, authorise absence. Requests to the School for granting permission for leave of absence to a pupil during term time must be made in writing in advance directly to the relevant Head. The Head or member of senior staff with delegated responsibility, is only able to authorise leave of absence where exceptional circumstances relate to the application. Authorised leave is unlikely to be granted for the purpose of a family holiday. For further details on leave which may be authorised, refer to Annex 1 of our Attendance Policy, available on the School website. We ask that parents make contact with the School when a child is going to be absent for ill health reasons in order that the School can keep records updated and importantly, so that the School can be kept informed of their progress to full health and anticipated return date. If necessary, the School may ask for medical evidence of any illness. We expect any absence for illness to be evidenced in writing by the parent/carer(s) as soon as possible. An absence is classified as unauthorised if a child is away from school without the permission from the Head or the Deputy Head/member of the Senior Leadership Team where delegated, in advance. If you have to collect your child early, for whatever reason, you must liaise with the School Office and collect a Pupil’s Pass to sign your child out.
LUNCHES
All children are provided with a tasty and nutritious lunch at school. The weekly menu is posted on Sharepoint a week in advance. Please ensure that you have filled in the online form during registration giving information about allergies or religious dietary requirements.
It is a school rule that children may not bring any food to school except on permitted special occasions. They must bring named water bottles from home. Under no circumstances may hot drinks, juice, sweets or chewing gum be brought into school.
Children may bring individual cup cakes into school for their birthday which is shared amongst the Form at break time. The cup cakes must be handed into the School Office and must not contain nuts. Please refer to our Allergies Policy, available on the School website. This must be pre-arranged with your children’s form teacher to avoid multiple cakes on a day.
MONEY & MPESA
There are some occasions when children are asked to bring money to school, for example to pay for extra activities or school trips. This money should be handed into the School Office, or the teacher responsible, first thing in the morning. Otherwise, children should never have money at school. There is a school MPESA number for the payment of some trips. Charity money on dress up charity days should be handed in to Form Teachers.
MPESA: Buy Goods and Services, Till number: 696124
MOBILE PHONES & ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT
Mobile phones and are not allowed at school. They are also not permitted on any school trips.
The school cannot be held responsible for any items that go missing. Fitbits and smart watches are allowed if they are not cellular enabled, but the school will not be held responsible for these. All devices used for learning are managed by the school and pupils will not bring in their own devices. The school strongly recommends that pupils do not have mobile phones.
SCHOOL BAGS
All children need a bag to carry their sports kit. Kit bags and rucksacks are available to purchase from the online shop as are swimming bags.
Pupils will also need a study back pack, suitable for carrying a few books to and from home, these are available on the school’s online shop. This must be a suitable size to fit entirely within their lockers.
LOST PROPERTY
Firstly, please ensure ALL of your child’s uniform and belongings are labelled. Items lost and found at school are collected and put into the containers outside the Courtney Hall. They should be claimed as soon as possible. At the end of each term, any remaining unnamed items are donated to charity through the PTA run second-hand shop. Lost property is sorted by the Year 7 and 8 pupils and labelled items are returned to their rightful owners. More valuable items (e.g. watches) are normally handed into the School Office or Deputy Head Pastoral’s office.

PEPONI GOES GREEN
Education of Sustainable Development is threaded through our whole curriculum. We have Eco-committees formed from pupils, staff and parents. We have the Sustainability & Environment HUB on Sharepoint, a platform to share news and information about green activities taking place in and around the school, a place to link in to networks and get involved.
Peponi House is proud to host a recycling station for families and staff use and the station officially opened in June 2024 to recycle, Metal, Plastic, Paper and PET plastic bottles.
To ensure our recycling station continues to be sustainable and children are getting the most out of this great green initiative, please follow the below requirements when participating in recycling.
1. All plastic waste needs to be washed before being deposited into the bins. This cannot occur on school grounds and must be done at home.
2. Not all items containing plastic, metal and paper can be recycled. No glass please. On Sharepoint, there is a directory of common household items for your reference purposes, we have also included details on how to get in touch if you have questions about specific items.
MEDICAL CARE
The school has three full-time qualified nurses. All Medical Information is collected through our MIS and it is the responsibility of the parents to ensure this is regularly updated and accurate.
Any medicine brought to school must be handed directly to the school nurse in the medical room before 7.50am. A ‘Permission to Medicate’ form must be completed otherwise medication cannot be dispensed.
Please also inform your child’s Form Teacher regarding any medicines via the Homework Diary. Medicines will not be administered to children without the parent’s instruction and all medication must be in the original packaging clearly labelled as prescribed to your child.
A Medical Incident Form will be completed, and sent home via iSAMS by the nurse following the administration of treatment. An additional insurance charge is included in school fees so that, in the event of a medical emergency, a fully-equipped ambulance service is available. When the school hosts a sports tournament, there is always an ambulance in attendance.
If your child is unwell, please do not send them to school. Information on First aid and medical conditions including periods of exclusion for ill health can be found in our Medicines Policy on the school’s website.
All children must remain at home for 48 hours after any bout of vomiting or diarrhoea. This is without exception unless there is a Doctor’s certificate attesting that your child is not infectious.
HOUSE SYSTEM
Chania (green), Mara (yellow), Tana (red) or Tsavo (blue)
The House system is an important feature of the Peponi House community. Everyone is in a House and they compete against each other by collecting house points for Personal Effort, Performance, thinking of Others, Neatness and being Inspiring. Inter-House events take place during the course of the school year, enabling each house to earn additional points. Houses have House Captains who are pupils from Year 8.
Green points can also be collected for individual and collective acts of sustainable actions.
PUPIL LEADERSHIP
There is a School Council to give the children a voice within the school community and to develop our awareness and understanding of our place in the world. We have 3 councils involved in various aspects of school life.
• School Council
• Food Committee
• Eco Committee
Children are nominated to represent their classes on the council/committees.
Year 8 Prefects are nominated and elected to specific roles which support all pupils to have a voice. The Prefects lead the Councils and Committees.
Year 7 & 8 pupils are invited to apply for roles as Wellbeing Ambassadors to help the wellbeing of all children at school.
PEPONI HOUSE VALUES & EXPECTATIONS
At Peponi House we see ourselves as a family that cares about and respects one another fulfilling our aims as a ‘School of Many Nations, a Family of One’. As in all families, it is important to set clear boundaries to ensure that we have a safe and supportive environment that promotes respect for self and others as well as for teaching and learning.
We, the educators, represent authority at school, just as parents represent authority at home. It is important that our school community - including parents, pupils, teachers, administration and support staff - works together to promote and encourage the following values:
i. All individuals in the school community will treat others with respect, concern, caring and fairness;
ii. All individuals in the school will display good citizenship and acknowledge responsibility for their behaviour;
iii. Pupils are expected to attend all classes, arrive on time and actively engage in the tasks;
iv. Teachers have the right and duty to model and teach the principles of respect for others and responsibility for one’s actions;
v. Teachers will establish and use behavioural consequences in an educational manner, helping pupils to appreciate the purpose of rules, the importance of making amends, and the taking of responsibility for improving their behaviour;
vi. Pupils have the right to be treated with respect, to expect fair and consistent treatment from teachers and to be able to voice and have their opinions heard in a respectable forum;
vii. Pupils have the responsibility to be aware of and abide by school rules, regulations and procedures. Parents are expected to support the school in the implementation of these guidelines. We are generally fortunate in having very well-behaved pupils who are respectful and are kind to others. Most of our pupils set high standards for themselves with regard to both effort and achievement at all levels.
SCHOOL RULES
Our school rules are divided into two groups, so as to emphasise the importance of showing respect, and taking responsibility. You may find it helpful to read through these rules with your children before they join the school and to explain anything that they do not understand.
Moral Values – ‘Golden Rules’. These rules are based on respect.
We show respect for:
i. Other people’s rights to learn
ii. Other people’s feelings, opinions, beliefs and cultures
iii. Property
iv. Our work and ourselves
We show respect by:
i. Listening without interrupting
ii. Being helpful and kind to others
iii. Celebrating the success of others
iv. Telling the truth
v. Avoiding the use of bad language
vi. Wearing our school uniform with pride
Practical Rules - These rules all help to protect us:
i. We think before we act
ii. We look out for the safety of others
iii. We wear our hats for outdoor activities, including break-time
iv. We walk on paths and concrete areas
v. We only bring food, sweets or money to school by invitation on special occasions
vi. We know that there are some rooms/areas we may not enter without permission
PRAISE & REWARD
PEPONI House Points
PE: Personal Effort P: Performance O: (Thinking of) Others N: Neatness I: Impressive Throughout the school, House Points are awarded for effort in the classroom and to reward good conduct. The Houses compete against each other, and the members of the House which accumulates the most points enjoy a treat (e.g. House barbecue).
Children who perform exceptionally well are awarded a certificate at the termly Final Assembly. In the Junior Department, we also offer the incentive of a weekly Golden Time session, during which children choose from a selection of ‘fun’ activities. Especially good behaviour is rewarded by a child’s name being entered in the Golden Book and their success is shared in Junior Assembly.
Another way of rewarding the positive is by issuing a merit certificate, which a child is encouraged to take home to share with his/her parents, thereby giving them the opportunity to celebrate their child’s achievement. These are handed out at the weekly Friday assembly and can be for an exceptional piece of work, showing kindness or helpfulness beyond what is expected, exceptional sportsmanship, etc.
Every week House Points are collected by the Form Tutor/Taker who records them on the school’s MIS. A running total will be kept and further certificates and badges will be awarded at various appropriate milestones, within the school year. Badges may be worn on blazers (Year 7/8) or on fleeces (Year 1-6).
Green Points
We are proud to introduce Green Points as part of our program to encourage student leadership and engagement within the community. Green Points are collected like House Points, but are earned for activity related to learning about and improving the environment.
SANCTIONS
Normally, when a child misbehaves and/or breaks a school rule, an encouraging, corrective word from the teacher will achieve the desired result. First and foremost, it is important that children understand the reason why this behaviour is undesirable, so teachers are encouraged to give a clear explanation and to discuss the problem with the child. The mantra is to always ‘have the conversation’ with the pupil. This is called the ‘warning’.
We believe that there also needs to be a clearly understood and consistently applied system for use when inappropriate behaviour is in obvious breach of the accepted code. A child may receive a demerit if they continue with poor behaviour after having been warned. If a child receives 3 demerits within a week, this will be communicated to the parents and the child will be expected to attend a Head of Phase Lunch Break Detention. Inappropriate behaviour of any nature should provide an opportunity to better educate our children on how to be better citizens and role models for others. Sanctions for such behaviour has limited value if the child does not learn from their mistakes. The ethos of rules and sanctions at Peponi House is aimed at helping us lead socially and morally better lives.
Where there is serious misconduct, the School Wellbeing Team support pupils through restorative, social and emotional progammes. Further information is in our Behaviour Policy.
Please see our Behaviour Policy on our Website and Sharepoint. https://www.peponischool.org/peponi-school/information/peponi-school-policies/
WELLBEING & MENTAL HEALTH
At Peponi House, we recognise the significance of mental health of our pupils, identifying its critical effect on their academic and individual growth. Our wellbeing hub offers emotional first aid to our pupils and a safe space to express their feelings, manage stress and build resilience. By prioritising mental well-being, we aim to equip our pupils with the tools they need for a balanced and successful life. Our counsellors are supported by trained Youth Mental Health First Aiders and Wellbeing Ambassadors further add to the support we offer our pupils to achieving and maintaining mental wellbeing
ACADEMIC ORGANISATION
In Years 1-4 children are taught predominantly by their form teacher. However they are taught by subject specialists in areas such as games, languages and music. English and maths are taught separately as discrete subjects. The skills for other areas of learning are taught within an overall half term theme.
Children are taught in mixed-ability classes for most subjects throughout the school, although in the upper years there may be some setting for English or maths if the cohort profile makes this appropriate.
In Year 5 pupils are taught discrete subjects, predominantly by their form teacher and by Year 6 almost all classes will be taught by subject specialist teachers.
In Years 1–4 at Peponi House, we follow a thematic, enquiry-based approach that places pupil voice and curiosity at the heart of the learning experience. Each half term, children explore a theme through a range of cross-curricular activities that span subjects like history, geography, science, art, religious studies, and design technology. The approach is student-led, encouraging children to pose questions, follow their own lines of enquiry, and take ownership of their learning. Lessons are carefully designed to develop key transferable skills such as critical thinking, collaboration, research, presentation, and reflection.
Themes begin with a launch event to spark interest and conclude with a celebration or showcase, giving pupils a real sense of purpose and achievement. This approach ensures that learning is not only engaging and relevant but also deeply rooted in developing the whole child.
OUTDOOR LEARNING & FOREST SCHOOL
Peponi House is delighted to be introducing our Forest School at both its Kindergarten and Prep School sites from September onwards. This amazing and exciting initiative, a first in Kenya, will provide significant benefits to children’s learning by fostering holistic development through hands-on, nature-based experiences. Immersed in Kenya’s rich natural environment, students will build confidence, resilience, and independence as they engage in outdoor exploration, problem-solving, and teamwork.
This approach complements classroom learning by enhancing cognitive, emotional, and physical development, particularly through unstructured play and experiential education. Forest School also encourages environmental stewardship and a deeper connection to the local and wider ecosystem, aligning well with Kenya’s cultural and ecological heritage. Ultimately, our Forest School will nurture well-rounded learners equipped with critical thinking skills, creativity, and a lifelong love of learning through the outdoors.
PERFORMING ARTS
MUSIC
All children study music as part of the curriculum. Those who are keen are encouraged to take individual instrumental lessons. Pupils are selected to join the Senior Choir, Orchestra and the various school ensembles. Pupils can choose to join the Junior Choir. Full commitment to rehearsal and practice is required for all the groups. Pupils have an opportunity to share their music with others by playing together in class and at Teatime and Coffee Time Concerts.
There is also an emphasis on developing personal organisational skills and performance etiquette. Some of those who perform in class are selected to perform at the Teatime Concerts and Coffee Time. The focus of this concert system is the ongoing tracking of pupils’ development following performance to their peers in class. The role of the parent is to support their child with their regular practice at home throughout the term. A few children are selected by the department to perform at major school concerts and various other performance opportunities. We encourage children to learn instruments (voice included) as a way of expanding their educational experience. Instrumental lessons are given by visiting peripatetic teachers for a fee. The lessons are given in school time and are rotated weekly to cause minimal disruption to the academic programme. Invoices for a term’s lessons are payable to the individual teacher. Instrument lessons will stop if payment is overdue. Fees are refundable for lessons for which the teacher is absent; but if the pupil is absent for personal reasons, the teacher is not obliged to offer a refund or to make up the lesson. This is because the peripatetic teachers come on specific days and timetabling is done in advance.
All individual instrumental lessons can be arranged through the Music Administrator, by email musicdepartment@peponihouse.sc.ke or a note in a child’s diary. There is an automated waiting list. Once a pupil is on the waiting list, they will be assigned a teacher when a suitable place opens up. They will be contacted and guided on what to do once the lessons start. There is a lot of useful information available on Sharepoint. In many cases, an instrument can be hired from the school. The school will invoice for the hire and the charges are payable to the school. Parents will be liable for loss or damage of the hired instrument.
DRAMA
Drama is a much-loved part of school life and a wonderful way for our pupils to grow in confidence, creativity, and teamwork. Whether on stage, behind the scenes, or building skills in the classroom, every child has the chance to find their voice and shine.
Drama in the Classroom (Years 5–8)
In Years 5 and 8, pupils enjoy weekly drama lessons taught by our specialist drama teacher. These sessions are lively, inclusive, and designed to help children explore character, movement, voice, and storytelling. It’s a joyful space where imagination comes to life and every voice matters.
School Productions Each year, we stage four productions:
· Years 1 and 2
· Years 3 and 4
· Years 5 and 6
· Years 7 and 8
Every pupil is warmly encouraged to audition, and we aim to give every child the opportunity to take part—whether on stage or in a supporting role backstage. These productions are a real highlight in our calendar and a celebration of the children’s hard work, talent, and enthusiasm.
LAMDA
Lessons For pupils who wish to take their performance skills further, we offer LAMDA (London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art) lessons. These one-to-one or small group sessions help children build confidence in public speaking, acting, and communication. LAMDA is a fantastic option for those who want to challenge themselves and gain recognised qualifications along the way. If you’re interested in signing your child up for LAMDA, please get in touch with the Music Administrator, by email musicdepartment@peponihouse.sc.ke – we’ll be happy to help with more details.
DRAMA SCHOLARSHIPS
Our Drama Scholarship Programme is designed to support and stretch pupils with a particular passion and talent for drama. Scholars receive additional training and opportunities to perform, helping them develop their skills to the next level. The programme is both exciting and demanding, and we’re proud of the dedication our scholars show throughout the year.
We believe drama helps children find their confidence, express themselves, and feel part of something special. Whether your child is a budding actor or simply curious to try something new, we’re here to support and encourage them every step of the way.
THE UK NATIONAL CURRICULUM & COMMON ENTRANCE (CE)
All pupils follow a curriculum based on the National Curriculum of England. We prepare children for the next stage of their education and the UK Curriculum ultimately tests pupils in GCSEs and then A Levels, facilitating entry into universities in the UK and around the World.
Year 8 pupils take Common Entrance in the core subjects, English, Maths and Science, the traditional assessment method for entry into British Senior Schools in the UK and abroad. Common Entrance assessments follow the ISEB Syllabus for these subjects.
Resources and curriculum summaries to keep parents abreast of the topics that the children are studying in class, and homework tasks are shared digitally on Sharepoint for parents and Teams for pupils.
The Independent Schools Examination Board (ISEB) set the Common Entrance examinations annually. Examination fees are charged separately and will be invoiced in Year 8.
HOMEWORK
For children in Years 1-2, there is a reading homework (every weekday evening), and tasks such as the learning of vocabulary, times tables and number bonds. The reading should be done for at least ten minutes every evening with an adult. Each week there is a short writing task intended to support the development of the children’s handwriting. More formal homework assignments are set from Year 3. To begin with, so that children are introduced gradually to this important discipline, the expectation is that homework per subject should take no more than 10-15 minutes. By Year 5/6 this will be half an hour a night and in Year 7/8, this will be 50 minutes a night. Pupils make a note of their homework task in their school diary.
Homework tasks are posted on Teams with a set date and submission date. In Years 3&4, children are expected to read every evening.
A suitable environment for completing homework is important. A quiet room with a table or desk is most effective. Try to establish a routine and take an interest in how your child settles to study. If you can, be available to assist, but please encourage your child to work as independently as possible. If there are any concerns about homework please make a note of them in the child’s diary.
LANGUAGES
Children entering Year 1 will, in addition to Kiswahili and English, be introduced to both French and Spanish. Over the first half of the term, they will experience a structured and engaging introduction to both languages. By the October half-term, pupils through their parents will have the opportunity to choose which of these two languages they wish to continue studying for the rest of the year. Beyond Year 1 the children will be expected to commit to the language through to the end of their studies at Peponi House. However, if after Year 1 they wish to change in Year 2, they are able but must complete the year.
We believe this choice is crucial in accommodating our diverse community’s varied preferences and future aspirations. Allowing pupils to select the language that resonates most with them not only enhances their learning experience but also empowers them to take ownership of their education.
EMBRACING TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION
At Peponi House, we recognise the vital role that digital innovation plays in modern education. Technology is a powerful tool that, when used thoughtfully, can significantly enhance learning experiences. For our Year 6 & 7 pupils, and pupils who benefit for assistive technology, we provide 1:1 iPads which can only be purchased through the school and are managed by the school, enabling seamless learning both in the classroom and at home. These iPads are charged to the parents. The school achieves the most competitive price for the current iPad through authorised Apple dealers within Kenya. The School insures each iPad. This approach ensures that technology is integrated purposefully, supporting our pupils in developing essential skills for the future. Computer rooms with PCs and banks of iPads are made available for all other pupils and online safety, developing digital citizenship is an integral part of our teaching. However, while we embrace educational technology, we strongly recommend that parents do not provide smart phones to children at our school. Research shows that excessive use of mobile phones, particularly for young children, can contribute to anxiety and distract from learning. By focusing on school-managed devices like iPads, we aim to create a balanced and secure digital environment that promotes both academic success and emotional well-being. Together, we can guide our children towards responsible and effective use of technology, preparing them for a dynamic and connected world.
LEARNING SUPPORT
In common with the school’s ethos, we fully accept that some children will require support on account of their learning difficulties. Though children with differences such as dyslexia, dyspraxia and ADHD will still be taught in the mainstream classroom, they may follow individual learning programmes in some areas of the curriculum, and/or receive specialist intervention, either on an individual basis or in a small group. Integrated learning support in some literacy and numeracy lessons is provided wherever possible. This Department is lead by an inclusion lead member of the SMT. Intervention and support can also take the form of assistive technology.
The school uses Standerdised and Teacher assessments to support individual learning. If there is a concern or if the school feels that further assessment may be required to identify specific support, the school may use specific screeners. Consent will be sought before this occurs. If children present with indicators of a specific learning difficulty, the school will arrange a discussion with parents to mutually agree the next steps.
EXTRA TUITION
Extra Tuition is not normally carried out by Peponi House staff. Where this occurs, it must be approved by the Head. Extra lessons outside school should be approached with great care. Children can become confused and it is important not to put too much pressure on children. It is most useful that any private tutor who you employ liaises closely with the subject teacher at school so that our efforts can be supported.
ASSESSMENT/EXAMS
Assessment is a part of every lesson and teachers reflect upon their pupils’ progress all of the time. This informs their planning in learning and pupil target setting.
More formal testing is carried out in all Year Groups so that the school is able to track the longer term progress of every child. School exams are introduced in Year 5, with exams in Maths and English. In Year 6 onwards, there are assessments of some kind in all of the academic subjects. Whilst the main aim is to assess the development of skills and levels of understanding, it is also necessary for children to revise the factual content of the curriculum. Revision will take place in lessons at school and where extra needs to be done at home, guidelines are given by teachers. The school uses UK Nationally Standardised assessments to identify pupils cognitive ability to support their individual learning. Data is shared with parents.
REPORTS & PARENT TEACHER MEETINGS
In Years 1-4, short reports in the core subjects are sent home in December, with long reports for all subjects sent home in July. In Years 5-8, short reports in all subjects are sent home in December, with long reports for all subjects sent home in March for Year 8, and in July for years 5-7.
There are Parent/Tutor Meetings in the September Term, when the parents can meet their child’s Form Tutor on an appointment basis to discuss their child’s general progress in the first few weeks. In the January Term there are Parent/Teacher Meetings when parents meet all the individual subject teachers to discuss their child’s academic progress.
GRADES
In Years 1 to 4, all pupils receive effort grades for all subjects. Years 1 and 2 receive attainment grades for core subjects only. Their Effort is similarly monitored and referred to in Parent Teacher Meetings and Reports. In Years 3 to 8, pupils are graded according to their Effort and their Attainment.
EFFORT GRADES IN YEARS 1-8
The effort each child is making is of paramount importance. In order to win an Effort Prize at the end of term, a child must have scored only 1s and 2s in all subjects, including Games, to qualify. A child can win an Outstanding Effort Prize, if more 1s than 2s are achieved.
Pupils are ranked on a scale of 1-4 (where 1 is the highest) and the school will inform parents if their child is likely to score a 4. Pupils who score 3 in more than one subject may, at the discretion of the staff, be put on an Effort Card, which is managed by the Tutor and monitored by the Deputy Head Academic, or given other appropriate support. Pupils who score a 4 in any subject may be put on an Effort Card and the parents will be contacted. It is at the discretion of the teacher as to how many of the criteria a child needs to fulfill to reach the given effort grade. This is especially true for non-examined subjects such as Art or P.E.
Effort Grade Evidence includes but is not limited to:
1 Excellent Application: consistent, full contributions to all lessons; always responds to the teacher’s advice.
Expectation: classwork and homework always completed to the best of pupil’s ability and at times exceeds the teacher’s expectations.
Attitude: a consistent, proactive and positive influence.
Preparation: full set of resources are brought to every lesson.
2 Good Application: contributes proactively to most lessons and nearly always attempts to apply teacher’s advice to their work.
Expectation: classwork and homework completed within expectations.
Attitude: shows a positive influence in all lessons and tries to fulfil requests.
Preparation: full set of resources are brought to most lessons.
3 Needs improvement Application: contributes occasionally during lessons; inconsistent effort regarding presentation and work output.
Expectation: classwork and homework is not always completed or often does not match the teacher’s expectations.
Attitude: the pupil is coasting and initiative is required.
Preparation: full set of resources are often not brought to lessons.
4 Unacceptable Application: failure to react to several warnings about homework and classwork.
Expectation: classwork and homework show a lack of pride and are not completed to the best of the pupil’s ability, nor does it match expectations.
Attitude: behaviour impacts negatively upon peers.
Preparation: failure to respond to the teacher’s efforts to help with organisation.
CREATIVE & ACTIVE SUBJECTS IN YEARS 6 - 8
Pupils are given positive feedback for having fulfilled learning objectives at their own individual level. In Years 1-5 these Grades are the basis of recording attainment. These symbols relate to the quality of work relative to the child’s peers and the level at which pupils are expected to work. Grades relate to the quality of a pupil’s work relative to his/ her peers.
E: Exceeding Expectations
O: On Track with what we would expect an average child of this age to be achieving W: Working Towards In Years 6 to 8, the following subjects are also graded according to this system of E/O/W: Art and DT, Music, Computing, P.E., and Swimming. LIBRARY
We have two excellent libraries. The Libraries are open at break times and pupils are encouraged to use the libraries. Please note that any misplaced or damaged books will need to be replaced or paid for.
We are pleased to announce that our school has subscribed to ePlatform, a user-friendly online library that provides students with access to a wide range of eBooks and audio books. All children can log in using their school credentials. This e-library is designed to complement - not replace - the physical books available from our two school libraries. We encourage students to continue borrowing physical books to support a rich and varied reading experience.
Key Features of the ePlatform:
• Accessible anywhere with an internet connection
• Compatible with smartphones, tablets, and computers
Easy to use with school login credentials
Offers a wide selection of age-appropriate reading materials
Form tutors will guide students through the login process and show them how to browse, borrow, and enjoy books from the platform.
We hope this valuable resource will enhance your child’s reading journey both at school and at home.
EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Activities take place before school, in school and after school.
Children are encouraged to try as many different activities as possible in order to develop (and indeed discover!) new passions. Activity groups usually bring together children from different age ranges and classes and therefore the sessions offer an excellent opportunity to make new friends and work with new teachers. The activities program consists of sports, music, coding, creative and scholarship activities.
TRIPS & VISITS
Trips which are local and held entirely within the school day are informed to parents via the School Calendar on the Parent Portal. Permission is sought for any trips outside school hours or incurring a cost.
Extra-curricular and residential trips are charged as an addition, however all costs associated with school provided transport, food and staffing is absorbed by the school. Costs to parents represent the cost from the external provider. Please see below the approximate costs for last year’s April Term year group trips. PEPONI BUMBLEBEES
Peponi Bumblebees is the after-school enrichment program that consists of extra-curricular paid activities. We build skills and enhance the childhood experience within the school environment. The activities booklet and sign up form are shared with parents at the start of each term of term. Payment is made directly to activity providers. When filling the form parents should copy and paste the payment code and amount paid where applicable on the sign up form. We have an extensive program with a broad range of activities.
General activity timings are as follows:
(Please note that there may be a few activities that may have a different start and end time. This will be indicated on the sign up form).
Year 1-2 (15.30 – 16.30)
Year 3-4 (15.45 – 16.45)
Year 5-8 (16.15 – 17.15)
PLAY
Play is an important aspect of childhood and is valuable in learning and recreation. There are many presentations of play in many forms through the school day. Pupils are encouraged to choose play at lunchtime instead of a lunchtime activity every day.
SPORT
The sporting programme is comprised of ‘major’ and ‘minor’ sports as indicated below. Pupils also enjoy participating in many other sports in Activity and PE sessions.
Term Major Sports Minor Sports
September Football and Cricket Athletics
January Hockey Swimming
April Netball, Rugby Tennis, Cross Country Peponi House competes against other schools in all of these sports. Regular matches begin at Under 9 level (Years 3 & 4) and continue through U11 (Years 5 & 6) and U13 (Years 7 & 8). We endeavour to find the opportunity for as many children as possible to represent the school, and, when other schools are able to accommodate us, matches are arranged for as many different teams as possible. At all levels, those selected are expected to give full commitment to their teams, which includes participation in weekend fixtures, if selected. Details of all matches are given on the school calendar, and updated weekly. ‘Touchline support’ from parents is very welcome – but please ensure that your support is always positive and encouraging. Criticism of either team, or of the referee’s decisions, is inappropriate and can be damaging and sets a very negative example to young people. If a pupil is off games or swimming for more than one week, they must have a Doctor’s letter to confirm they are not allowed to play sports.
SQUAD PRACTICES
There will be practices for sports at lunch, after school and sometimes before school for different sports and different children on various days. Coaches will inform pupils and parents as to when late practices will take place.
AWAY MATCHES
At the beginning of each academic year, you will be asked to return an online form declaring that you are happy for your child to play in away matches in the Nairobi area. Please encourage your children to notify you well in advance if there is a likelihood of them being selected for a team, and refer to your calendar. You can also check the team sheets on Sharepoint. Team sheets are also supplied to the Office, so that, if you are in any doubt, you can receive immediate confirmation of team details over the telephone.
If your child is selected to play in a match outside Nairobi or one that is not stated in the calendar, your children will bring home a letter informing you of their selection, and of the match details, and you will be asked to return a Sharepoint form to school giving your permission for them to play.
No food or electronics are allowed on away matches or weekend tours.
Do be aware that for U13 and U11’s playing in A and B teams may have to be available on Saturday morning tournaments at least once a term.
INTER-HOUSE EVENTS
There are Inter-House events in all sports. There are Sports Days, Swimming Galas, Cross-Country and termly House Matches. Every child is involved in Inter-House events. The only exception is the Year 1 and 2 pupils who do not have Inter-House Matches in major sports.
BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL SWIMMING
All pupils in Year 1 - 6 have one swimming lesson per week, as part of the mainstream curriculum. Year 7&8 also have swimming as part of the PE programme. The school also has an additional swimming programme before and after school hours which will be communicated at the start of each term. There will be opportunities of recreational swimming during the school day as well as pre-squad swimming.
SCHOLARSHIP PREPARATION
Many of our pupils apply for and earn scholarships to senior schools (Year 9). We ask that pupils in Term 3 of Year 6 join lunchtime activities which suit their skill set if they wish to pursue a scholarship application. Teachers will review the ability of pupils and determine if it is appropriate to support a scholarship application in this area; Peponi House must approve all scholarship choices made by pupils and will advise parents as such. By October of Year 7, we finalise the areas of extra study the pupils participate in, whether that is academic, art, drama, music or sport. Pupils may only select one area of scholarship specialism; they follow the scholarship program of extra activities from the start of Year 7 until their scholarship assessment is completed by their senior school; this is usually during Term 2 of Year 8.
DRESS CODE
Please note especially the following policies: HATS
It is a strict rule that school hats must be worn at all times for outdoor activities. Inevitably, these get put on and taken off throughout the school day and do get mislaid quite regularly, so it is very important that they are clearly named so that they can be quickly returned to their owners, however children must take responsibility for their belongings.
JUMPERS
Years 1 t0 6 can wear a blue school fleece or jumper and Years 7&8 wear their blazers, not fleeces. Children should not come to school wearing a non- uniform tracksuit top or sweatshirt with their school uniform. On Games days, all children must wear their sports Phoenix Pullover from Tessen.
JEWELLERY & MAKE UP
We are sensitive to the wearing of certain items of jewellery for religious/cultural reasons. However, unless it is absolutely necessary, the wearing of jewellery at school should be restricted to that of single ear-studs. Ear-rings, nose studs and other items such as watches and fitness trackers that may cause injury (especially on the games field), must not be worn. Make up and nail varnish is not permitted at school.
HAIR
We do not have strict guidelines as to the length and style of children’s hair, but please note that significant ‘fashion statements’, which include patterns cut into the hair and artificially coloured hair, including coloured braids, are not permitted. Long hair should be kept tied or clipped back off the face.
SCHOOL UNIFORM LIST
The uniform list is organised according to where you can buy the necessary items.
School Uniform is available from Haria Uniforms, Sarit Centre, Westlands & The Junction Mall
The P.E. Kit, School Hat, School Fleece and Girls Uniform Trousers are only available from the Tessen online shop: https://tessensports.com/collections/peponi-house
The school keeps a small stock of sports kit to help parents if uniform ordered does not fit and where possible, will exchange items. Sample sizes are available at school for fitting prior to ordering online.

PARENT TEACHER ASSOCIATION
The main purpose of the Peponi House PTA is to give parents the opportunity to feel more involved in the school community. All parents are members and everyone can play a role. The PTA’s aims are achieved as follows:
Communication: through a system of Class Representatives (who liaise between the PTA and the parent body)
Social: organising termly events to bring the community together
Fundraising: for various charitable concerns (e.g. the annual Fête)
Ideas: putting forward parents’ suggestions and airing general views on school life although it must be stressed that parents with grievances must follow the complaints policy available on our website and should not use the PTA as a channel for making complaints.
More information is available on Sharepoint.
CAR PARKING
The main vehicle entrance is a dropping and collecting zone only. There are a few spaces reserved for disabled people. If your child is not ready for collection, please move on and drive round again or park outside.
To avoid problems and to keep the children out of harm’s way, please also:
• Drive slowly and as far down the dropping zone as you can, so as to allow other vehicles to pull in behind you
• Observe the zebra crossings and do not stop on them.
• Open all car windows so that you can be seen.
• Turn left when exiting the school grounds.
There are parking areas outside the school wall. If your child is below Year 4, please accompany them into the school premises if you park outside. Please do not drop children off outside the school gates.
All car parks are strictly for staff use only unless pre-arranged by the Head or Registrar. The area immediately outside the staff car-park cannot be used as a dropping and collecting point.
No vehicles are permitted onto the site without a current Peponi House sticker with the vehicle registration number on it. Parents must register their car at the School Office and receive their annual sticker from there, at the beginning of each academic year.
EDUCATION AFTER PEPONI HOUSE
Many children transfer from Peponi House at 13+ to Peponi School. Others will go to Independent Schools in the UK or other international schools. Matching a child with the right school is a very important business and can often be a difficult decision. Please meet with the Head to discuss next steps and we can work together to review different options.
