INDEX & EDUCATION
Get familiar with recovery.
What is a Peer Recovery Support Specialist?
A Peer Recovery Support Specialist (PRSS) is a person in recovery from a mental health diagnosis and/or substance misuse who has been trained to assist others on their individual road to recovery.
What is Wellbriety?
Wellbriety is the means to be both sober and well and to go beyond it. Wellbriety is a journey of hope and healing for Native Americans seeking recovery from substance use through tribal culture specific to each individual’s needs. Wellbriety follows the teaching of the medicine wheel, as well as, traditional 12-stop programs.
What is MAT?
MAT is an acronym for Medication Assisted Treatment. MAT utilizes medications for treatment of opioid use disorder (MOUD) and alcohol use disorder (MAUD) to suppress and reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms while blocking the effects of opioids.
What is Overdose Prevention?
Naloxone or Narcan is a medication used to prevent an active overdose by reversing the toxic effects of opioids. You can request to keep Narcan on-hand through your PRSS.
What is Harm Reduction?
Harm reduction is the evidence-based practice of implementing strategies for safer, managed, or abstained use of illicit drugs. Harm reduction prioritizes individual quality of life and offers non-coercive services and resources for drug use. By utilizing MAT, Safe-Use Kits, Testing Kits, and Overdose Prevention, harm reduction ensures each individual has a voice in their own recovery.

The Peoria Tribe for the PRSS program has helped me change my life and get back on track by getting me into treatment, transporting me to appointments...and even brought me clothes when I had nothing to my name. I want to thank the Tribe for giving me a second chance at life.
