Swarms of these came upon Egypt because Pharaoh continued to say, “No!”

This turned a completly different color, and everything in it died.

This caused the bodies of the Egyptians to hurt. Even Pharaoh’s court was in pain.

This caused Pharaoh to finally let God’s people go.

Moses and Aarom threw dust into the air, and this came from it.

These destroyed Egyptian property by affecting their animals.

These ate everything that was green. There were swarms of them, and Pharaoh almost changed his mind because of them.

This coming quarter will emphasize the importance of good stewardship while highlighting and reminding students of the importance of Christmas in its truest form. It also identifies the role stewardship and materialism can play in friendships. This will be a broad quarter, and one that is not only foundational but applicable and important in providing depth to our students’ understanding of what it means to live in a world steeped in self-importance and materialism. Series 1: Unwrapping Christmas In our culture, the essence of Christmas is often drowned out by materialism and frivolity. For many, Christmas is a time to burn through cash, throw parties, and make detailed wish lists. This series is designed to help students unwrap God’s purpose for the Christmas season. Series 2: A Beautiful Collision Our relationship with God is intertwined with how we choose to handle our finances. This series gives students the tools to become good stewards, develop priorities, and create responsible habits with their finances. Series 3: Friendship Island While we often view relationships as what others do to us, the Bible tells us that the focus of friendship is on us. We can’t always control who moves in and out of our circle of friends. This series teaches that we can make ourselves more attractive to others by becoming a better friend.

In an attempt to align himself with Jesus’ previous commandment, Peter said, “No, I will follow you to the end of the earth; I will lay my life down for you.” b. Jesus rebuked Peter knowing that Peter wasn’t quite as dedicated as he thought he was. 2. Jesus frankly told Peter that soon his unwavering commitment would turn into outright denial. a. Jesus told Peter that before morning, Peter would deny his relationship with Jesus three separate times. b. Create a bucket list that includes up to twenty items:

A LITTLE EXTRA FOR THE ROAD The Linkleiders are wealthy. In fact, they are ranked in the top 300 richest families in North America. Their two children are boys, 11 and 13 years old. Christmas is a wonderful time around the Linkleiders home, but it is not like the Christmases at most houses. Yes, there are decorations and carols, and there are beautifully wrapped presents under the tree. But the names on the gifts are not the names of those who live in the house. You see, the Linkleiders do not buy their sons presents at Christmas. Mrs. Linkleider said, “Our boys have everything they need and most of their wants. God has blessed us, so we want to use the holiday that celebrates His gift to us by giving gifts to others.” The Christmas tradition of the Linkleiders is to go to the local toy stores and allow the boys to buy gifts they think others would like. On Christmas Eve the family takes the gifts to a local shelter for those who do not have a home. The Linkleider boys readily admit that Christmas is their favorite time of the year, even though the average kid may wonder why. Do you?

Bible Passages John 13:1–15, 34–35

ROUTINE MAINTENANCE Take a look at your bucket list again. Would you like to edit it in light of being less self-serving and showing love to others? Can you add additional items that would impact others with Christ’s love?

The Great March on Washington D.C. was one of the largest political rallies for human rights in United States history. This march was intended to demand civil and economic rights for African Americans as well as other minority groups. Thousands of Americans headed to Washington on Tuesday August 27, 1963. On Wednesday, August 28, 1963, Martin Luther King, Jr., standing in front of the Lincoln Memorial, delivered the historic “I Have a Dream” speech in which he called for an end to racism. This march is credited with passing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and saw incredible acts of courage exemplified through the likes of Martin Luther King, Jr. (Pictured), Rosa Parks (Pictured), and the organizers of the Great March, A. Philip Randolph and Bayard Rustin.

Today’s humanistic culture sends very dangerous messages about God, the Bible, and absolute truth. If we are to conquer those messages, we must deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow Christ. This series will prove that embracing our current culture puts us in direct conflict with the Word of God and will provide tools to refute society’s humanistic messages.

Pair up with one or two of your classmates and discuss the following questions. Be prepared to share your discussion findings with the class. 1. Before today, did you know where the Bible came from? 2. If not, had you ever stopped to think about it? 3. What did you learn that was most surprising? 4. Why should we know how the Bible was formed? 5. Should we have faith in something if we do not know where it came from? 6. Is it enough to believe the Bible just because we have experienced Jesus and we know He “works”?

A LITTLE EXTRA FOR THE ROAD Recently there have been awful stories in the news of how religious extremists from other countries have singled out Christians to be tortured and/or killed. In one such instance, a bus of Muslims and Christians in Kenya was attacked by terrorists, but the lives of the Christians were saved because the Muslims on the bus refused to point them out or loaned them pieces of their clothing that would make the Christians blend in with the Muslims. The fact is, being a Christian in some places in the world is very dangerous. Maybe someone has asked you, “Would you be willing to die for Jesus and the Bible?” But what are the chances you will be asked in North America to give your actual life for the Gospel? Probably not very good. So if you probably aren’t going to have to decide whether you will die for Jesus, why don’t you ask yourself another question? Are you going decide to live for Him? Too many times people are convinced they would be strong in the face of persecution and would choose to die for Jesus when in reality they aren’t even living for Him! Where do you stand on the question? Are you willing to live for Jesus? ROUTINE MAINTENANCE Someone once said, “Find something worth dying for and then live for it!” Jesus thought we were worth dying for, and then He rose again so He could live in us and through us. He does this through the Holy Ghost. What about you? This week, find ways to die to yourself (tell your flesh “no!”), and find ways to live a life that shows the world how Jesus would live.

Next Week’s Bible Point: We must seek not only to gain knowledge of the Scriptures but also to apply its truths to our lives.

A LITTLE EXTRA FOR THE ROAD I once spent the day talking to a Christian who also happened to be a scientist. I asked him if he had any of his friends who were scientists give him trouble because he had faith in God. He just shrugged and said, “If anyone says they don’t have faith in something, they’re lying.” I was a bit surprised at how blunt he was so I asked him to explain that to me. He told me that even scientists have to have faith. He said, “There comes a certain point where the line is drawn between what can be seen, touched, smelled, heard, or tasted and what cannot. When a person steps over that line, where he goes from there is based on faith in something.” “So, for instance, once I’ve crossed the line of the obvious, I have to choose whether to believe man is the total authority over life or God is?” I asked. “That’s basically right,” he nodded. “When you reach an area where no absolute proof appears to the human, then you have to turn towards God or you have to turn towards humanism. And humanism is the belief that man is basically all there is and he will eventually figure stuff out.” “Things like miracles?” I asked. “Exactly. If you do not accept God as existing and almighty, you have to look at the unexplainable and assume that what happened has an explanation, but mankind isn’t to the place he’s figured it out.” “So what made you put your faith in God instead of science?” I asked. “Well, I can’t say that I’ve put my faith in God instead of science, really. It’s more like I’ve put my faith in God and science has made me comfortable with that decision.” “How so?”

LESSON TEXT

FOCUS THOUGHT Jesus planted a new kingdom on earth governed by the ethics of the heart.

Luke 4:16–22 16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read . 17 And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias . And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, 18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, 19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord . 20 And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down . And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him . 21 And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears . 22 And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth . And they said, Is not this Joseph’s son?

OUTLINE

Added to the inability of the Law to fully restore the relationship between God and His people, was the addition of hundreds of rules that dulled the spirit of the Law . Jesus urged his disciples to pray, “Thy kingdom come . Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10) . Through various parables, Jesus described some characteristics of this Kingdom . It would have great potential for growth, demonstrated by how a mustard seed grows (Matthew 13:31– 32) . His kingdom would spread throughout the earth as leaven permeates a batch of bread dough (Matthew 13:33) . The only way into this kingdom would be through conversion (Matthew 18:3) . In the parable of the sower, Jesus indicated not everyone who heard about the Kingdom would become a disciple . Some would receive the message initially but would soon turn aside due to “tribulation or persecution,” offenses, cares of this life, or “the deceitfulness of riches” (Matthew 13:18–22) . However, those who heard the message, understood it, and received it would bear fruit for the Kingdom (Matthew 13:23) .

CONTEMPLATING THE TOPIC The Lord came to establish a kingdom different from any previous kingdom; neither would this kingdom have a parallel with any future kingdom . His kingdom would have no political ramifications . Before the Day of Pentecost, Jewish religion had been bound in the law of Moses, which was “our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ” (Galatians 3:24) .

5

“Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed” (John 8:31). “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another” (John 13:35). “Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples” (John 15:8).

SEARCHING THE SCRIPTURES Scholars suggest that Luke’s writings were designed to reach the Gentiles . Luke portrayed Jesus as the Son of Man, whose mission was to save sinners . (See Luke 9:56; 19:10 .) All human beings need a Savior because “all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23) . When God killed animals to cover the nakedness of Adam and Eve, He demonstrated that shedding of blood was necessary to atone for sin . Throughout the Old Testament, animal sacrifices were required for the atonement of sins . The priests were required “to make an atonement for the children of Israel for all their sins once a year” (Leviticus 16:34) . However, when Jesus was crucified on the cross, the blood He shed was that of a sinless man and was sufficient to atone “for the sins of the whole world” (I John 2:2) . Jesus offered “one sacrifice for sins for ever” (Hebrews 10:12) .

B. Waiting for the Messiah Only the Book of Luke gives the account of Simeon . (See Luke 2:25–35 .) He was just and devout and had spent his life waiting for the Messiah . By his actions and attitude, this righteous man was obedient to God’s commands and conformed to His will . “It was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord’s Christ” (Luke 2:26) . While he waited, Simeon went about his daily duties, living a righteous life according to God’s law . When the time came for his promise to be fulfilled, Simeon “came by the Spirit into the temple” (Luke 2:27) . God’s timing is perfect . After Simeon arrived in the Temple, Mary and Joseph entered with Jesus . When Simeon saw them, he knew this infant was the Messiah for whom he had been waiting . The Spirit of God continues to work in the same manner in our times, bringing revelation and illumination to our minds to see certain aspects of what God is doing . As we wait for Jesus’ second coming, we are to go about our daily lives, living according to His precepts in order to be ready for the Rapture . Anna, a widow, was a prophetess who lived in the Temple and “served God with fastings and prayers night and day” (Luke 2:36) . While Simeon was in the Temple, she apparently came into the same area where he was Adult 16-17 TM.indd 1

I. THE HOPE OF THE MESSIAH Hope for meaning in life is something for which all humans search . Hope is the belief that at some point there will be an improvement in the conditions of life and circumstances . The trap individuals often fall into is the belief that they can find hope for meaning in life in the possession of material things . If ever a man had the ability to show the foolishness of this concept, it was Solomon . The writer of Ecclesiastes outlined the folly of this search for meaning “under the

sun .” He explored every area of life where he thought he could find hope and came up empty . He looked to work, companionship, political power, wealth, human wisdom, reasoning, education, and even the promise of youth and found that all of it was meaningless . The appearance of a Savior was the only way for human beings to truly have hope . Even today there are no political, educational, economic, or medical solutions to the spiritual problems deep in one’s soul . Paul clearly established that “men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness . . . are without excuse” (Romans 1:18, 20) . Yet individuals have a tendency to suppress the truth about the real condition of their hearts . Because of the human need, God extends salvation through the work of the Cross . Anyone who so chooses may experience the new birth and enter into the kingdom of God .

anchored only to this fleeting life on earth but to the eternal life that is to come . Paul wrote: “If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable” (I CorinthiansFeasts and 15:19) . Our hope must be tethered to eternity!Celebrations A person without hope is miserable . He can see no future—no opportunity for something better . He feels stuck and trapped in his present circumstances . The people of Israel had lived for centuries with an abiding hope that one day Messiah would come and bring the changes for which their hearts had so desperately longed . With the new kingdom Christ introduced, Jesus unveiled the object of their hope—the kingdom of God .

Hope lays dormant until its amazing strength is beckoned, supplying a sheer belief that you will overcome, you will persevere and you will endure anything and everything that comes your way . “Hope is the belief that circumstances will get better . It’s not a wish for things to get better—it’s the actual belief . . . .” (www. psychologytoday.com, accessed August 17, 2015) . Hope is one of the most essential emotions of the human psyche . Evidently the apostle Paul also saw hope as vital, and he further pointed out the believer’s hope must not be

ADULT STUDENT

Jesus told His disciples to “go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost” (Matthew 28:19) . If our calling and commission aligns us with Jesus’ purpose and plan, then this call to tell everyone the good news will involve bringing hope and healing to the hurting . Remember, Jesus said He came to give “sight to the blind” and to “heal the brokenhearted .” (See Luke 4:18 .) As salt and light, this is our mission . Are we living the gospel intentionally before those around us? What are we doing to purposely turn the eyes of those around us toward Jesus?

B. Lifestyle Evangelism

As we reflect on the two warnings embedded in Jesus’ sermon on salt and light, we are reminded of the importance of our being “in the world .” Not only are we to be intentional when it comes to fulfilling the Great Commission as normally portrayed—preaching and teaching in its practical sense—but also we must intentionally live our lives as vessels God can flow through even when we are unaware His Spirit is flowing through us . We must live a lifestyle that reflects God’s glory . This happens in daily conversations filled with love and grace and in daily actions that are honest and pure . Our behavior should season the atmosphere around us and scatter His light wherever it chooses to shine .

As Christians, we are to serve as preservatives in the world . Just as meat would decay without a preservative, this world is decaying morally without the “salt of the earth .” We may not see the effect we have at times, but the godly influence of Spirit-filled believers helps hold the decay at bay . The words we speak and the lives we live have the power to keep the wickedness of the evil one from spreading into certain places . Our families need someone to be the salt . Our workplaces need someone to be the salt . Our communities, our cities, and our states and provinces need someone to be the salt of the earth . Christians are to live in the world yet live pure lives different from the world . We must remain pure and resist the pressures and values of the world, proclaiming and practicing biblical lifestyles . Additionally, as light we should illuminate and reveal Jesus Christ to those around us . Not only does our light expose evil, but it shines on Jesus, revealing Him to those who are in darkness . When the light shines from our lives, it reveals “the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ” (II Corinthians 4:6) . Many cannot truly see Jesus either because they are walking in darkness or because those who supposedly know Christ are not acting as light in the world . We let the light shine before unbelievers when we live our lives sepVision 1911635.indd arate, holy, and biblically . We must refuse to let worldliness dilute our savor or dim our brightness . We must live Spirit-filled lives empowered by the Holy Ghost . (See Philippians 2:14–15 .) 

Additional Adult Curriculum Resources people were to cross over, it would take divine intervention . God did not let them down . Following God’s instructions, the priests carried the Ark of the Covenant on their shoulders into the swollen river . In response to their obedience, God dropped an invisible dam into the river—reminiscent of the Red Sea crossing . The water to the south ran toward the Dead Sea, and the water to the north backed up toward the Sea of Galilee, leaving a riverbed suitable for crossing . Trusting God’s unseen dam, Israel walked across the river into Canaan . This day was one to remember . Such a spectacular event would be indelibly burned into the memory of those who marched across the dry riverbed, but those who were born afterward would have no personal knowledge of this occasion . They would know about this miracle only by word of mouth . The Lord told Joshua to ask twelve men to each take a stone from the riverbed, where the priests had stood, to be set up for a memorial . Joshua also erected a twelvestone memorial in the river . The Jordan River resumed its normal flow only after all the people had passed over and the priests were safely out of the water . After crossing the Jordan, the people camped in Gilgal, where Joshua set up the twelve stones taken from the river for a memorial . Later, when people would see this stone monument, they would ask, “What is this?” Then the story would be told again and again . God initiated this memorial and by it confirmed the importance of remembering past victories and of building memorials . On the other hand, memorials can be overemphasized . Idols were a perpetual temptation for the Israelites . God once saved them from an epidemic of poisonous snakes by directing Moses to make a brass serpent and put it on a pole . All who looked at the brass serpent were healed of their snakebites . (See Numbers 21:5–9 .) Years later, however, instead of worshiping God for the miraculous way He had intervened on behalf of their forefathers, the Israelites began to worship the brass snake on a pole . It had become a god to them . When Hezekiah became king, he destroyed this idol . (See II Kings 18:1–4 .)

SEARCHING THE SCRIPTURES I. BIBLICAL MEMORIALS

Our Creator understands what anchors our memories and evokes solemnity in our emotions . Because of this, God has implemented many memorials throughout His dealings with humanity . Some moments in life stand apart from all others . Certain events impact our lives and the lives of others in radical ways . We long to capture the significance of these special moments . We want our children and grandchildren to remember them . God implemented memorials not only to educate newcomers but also to remind the elderly . Memorials renew our appreciation for the past .

They were coming from a hot desert land to a lush, verdant country that would become their long-awaited home . But there was one imposing problem .
