Introducing...

Alex RiggsOwner/Designer Oobi Baby & Kids Oobi Baby and Kids have been designing children's educational toys and textiles since 1998. Oobi’s mission is to create beautiful, retro, charming and slightly whimsical fashion that pushes the boundaries of what people usually expect from children's wear. This month we talk to creator, designer and owner of this gorgeous brand, Alex Riggs.

Q & A with Alex What is the inspiration behind creating the Oobi designs? ALEX :The inspiration is always different. It can be anything from an amazing colour to a trip overseas to revisiting an old storybook. Our ranges are always retro-inspired but have little ‘themes’ that can be seen throughout. It’s a nice way to keep the ranges fresh and to try and create a story with every season. What has been the hardest hurdle to conquer in your career so far? ? ALEX: It’s difficult to switch off I guess. I’m always breathing, dreaming, thinking Oobi and I find that I have completely blurred the line between my work life and my personal life. I always debate with people though – why “switch off” when you love what you do? I’m bored on holidays for example unless I’m checking out vintage markets, looking for buttons or finding inspiration. At night I love going on Facebook and seeing the photos of littlies wearing Oobi. In terms of a business hurdle it’s been hard in the past to get into stores. There are lots of people who haven’t heard of Oobi and don’t want to open their doors to new ideas. Building up a brand and a signature has really helped us to create a niche in the children’s fashion arena but there are still people who don’t ‘get’ it. I won’t change my designs though so we’ll see! What are three words to describe your journey so far with Oobi? ALEX: Exciting, Colourful, Emotional At what point in your Oobi life did you feel like all the hard work has paid off? ALEX : Being voted “Australia’s Favourite Children’s Fashion Brand” by the readers of KidStyleFile was one of the most exciting moments of my life. I had no idea back then that so many people even knew who we were. I remember Angela Anderson saying to me “you have no idea what you’ve created” and I was just in shock. Proper shock! If you weren't a designer for a gorgeous children's brand, what would you be doing? ALEX: I’d probably be teaching Spots or Stripes? ALEX: Uhhhh... I’ll let you guess! 8

Cook right, once a night! By Wendy Blume As if time-poor mum’s didn’t already have enough on their plates, it seems as though many of us are spending WAY too much time in the kitchen playing the role of short order cook for our fussy families! There are many bad eating and cooking habits that develop slowly in households over time. Cooking multiple meals is one of the most common. Often parents never stop catering for their ‘babies’ and find themselves still in the habit of cooking two meals every night, even once the children are at school. While parents making efforts to keep everyone happy should be congratulated, the whole epic dinner-time quickly becomes The good news is that with a bit of a burden that is endured rather than planning, kitchen slavery can be a thing enjoyed. of the past. Ideally, you’re aiming to find a stash of meals that everyone loves, but while you’re on the road to finding those, you can explore a range of flexible recipes, that can either be enjoyed by everyone, or easily modified or adapted at the time you serve them. This is one of the key reasons why Vegie Smuggler recipes are so perfect for families – healthy meals, enjoyed by children and easily adapted for parents. This ravioli with orange sauce recipe displays a few important Vegie-Smuggling principles… 14

This ravioli with orange sauce recipe displays a few important VegieSmuggling principles… 1.There’s a combination of hidden and invisible healthy ingredients. Kids need to learn that vegies are a part of every day. They need to understand that they will be served them every night. Over time they will learn to enjoy a wide range of ingredients. But often these visible vegies will be pushed aside, which is why the invisible vegies are so important. You can relax, knowing that even with only half the meal eaten, they are getting a large whack of vitamins and minerals. 2. You’re able to serve healthy meals no matter how busy your schedule is. This orange sauce can be made ahead and stored in the fridge. The vegies can also be chopped up and kept in containers in the fridge. This means at the end of the day, you can dash in, cook the ravioli and have dinner served in less than 15 minutes. It’s so important to plan for success. Utilise the freezer and ‘make-ahead’ meals to keep good food on the table all week. Also buy wisely at the supermarket – using ravioli in this recipe saves time and also lures kids into the healthy sauce. In an ideal world, you’d make everything from scratch and avoid fats and chemicals, but I’m a realist about how households run, especially on nights when you’ve all been at work all day. 3. Flexible recipes mean one delicious meal for everyone. Most of my recipes come with a list of optional ingredients, or suggestions for how to ‘gourmet’ up a basic dinner. This ravioli can be topped with cherry tomatoes, grated carrot, cubed feta, olives, basil, toasted pinenuts or chopped chilli – whatever works for the various members of your family. Hope you enjoy it!

Ravioli with Orange Sauce 1½ red capsicums, deseeded, cut into large chunks ¼ cup cottage cheese (or ricotta) 1 tbsp sun-dried tomato slices in oil 600g packet beef ravioli 125g can corn kernels, drained 1 punnet cherry tomatoes, halved TO SERVE (all optional, to suit different family members) basil leaves, olives, toasted pine nuts, parmesan cheese and freshly ground black pepper. Preheat grill to high. Pop the capsicum under the grill skin-side up and leave until black and charred. Don’t be shy about it – the blacker the skin, the more easily it will peel off. Remove and cover with a tea towel for 10 minutes, then peel skin off and discard. Chop capsicum flesh roughly and place in a stick blender. Blitz until smooth. Add cottage cheese and sun-dried tomato and blend until smooth. Cook pasta according to packet directions, then drain and return to the saucepan. Pour the sauce and vegies on top and toss to combine. Scatter with basil. SERVES 2 ADULTS & 2 KIDS For more free recipes and to buy the Vegie Smugglers cookbook, visit www.vegiesmugglers.com.au

Exciting things to come at Lake Macquarie's largest and most exciting playground! The Lake Macquarie Variety Playground is currently undergoing a major expansion with $4.5 million being invested in provide a fun and exciting play space. The playground is designed to cater for all children of all ages, no matter what their abilities are and ensure that everyone can play and interact together. Lake Macquarie City Council opened the first stages of the playground in 2008 to high acclaim, winning local, state and national awards for the facility. The biggest problem faced once the facility opened was the demand for additional equipment, particularly swings. Since then, Council was successful in obtaining $3.1 million from the Federal Government to put towards the expansion, including custom-made elements to capture the imagination of kids big and small.

If you have been down to the playground or checked out the updates on Facebook, you will see that a lot of work is currently underway with some of the new sections already open for use. The Circuit zone was opened in November 2010 and includes two intersecting tracks designed for kids to learn to use their wheels safely. It has signs and challenges typical of an everyday streetscape and some other features that are just for fun. There are picnic tables & seating throughout the Circuit zone. 18

The new amenities block adjacent to the main entry to the playground, includes a family toilet cubicle, MLAK accessible toilets and MLAK accessible change rooms toilets were opened at the end of May, and replace the old out dated toilet block. The final stages also include a new cafe/kiosk and will no doubt make will make the playground an even more popular destination. While the building is finished, we have to wait just a little while longer for that takeaway coffee. The operators are currently fitting out the space, with an opening date due in early August. While work at the playground isn’t due to be complete until the end of July, the water play zone, performance zone & quiet zone are all scheduled for completion in time for the July school holidays.

So if you are looking for something to do with the kids these school holidays check out the new sections of the Lake Macquarie Variety Playground at Speers Point Park.

New sections of the Lake Macquarie Variety Playground Quiet zone – This area will be a place that is separately fenced to allow kids with special needs to be able to build up their confidence before entering the main playground. It will also give them an area to chill out if the rest of the park gets a bit too much. Other people can play here too, however, if our specials users arrive and need to use this space, you may be required to move out into the rest of the playground.

20

The Quiet Zone has been designed in consultation with autism support groups, as a safe and quiet area to play. We hope that people understand and respect the intended use of this section of the playground. It will be sign posted so that other users of the playground understand what this special area is designed for.

Water Play Zone - This area includes equipment for playing with water, such as spouts, spray jets, troughs and an Archimedes screw and includes a sandy beach for building sand castles. All the equipment in this area is wheelchair accessible. The area is located under existing established shady trees and has seating for parents and carers. This zone encourages play that involves the senses – touch and sound. It is a continuation of the existing dry creek bed, already running through the playground with a focus on the natural environment.

There will be hand pumps and spring loaded taps that kids will need to operate to start the water moving, and trough, dishes and spouts to collect the water and keep water moving. This is not a ‘swimming area’ – no bodies of water. Performance Zone - this is a spiral stage that kids can work their way up to by following the winding bumping wall or the wheelchair accessible path. The wall forms an informal auditorium for the 'audience' and a great place for watching & listening. It is surrounded by picnic shelters & open picnic areas. Located under existing trees to enhance shade it is passive area for quiet play time that uses imagination and interaction between kids to build confidence. This area could be used by school groups, library groups or similar as a place for story time or teaching activities. 21

Big Swing zone - Different types of swings for different experiences & levels of ability set within existing trees and open space. These swings have been installed but the fence will be extended to enclose them when the rest of the construction is finished. Maze zone - This area will have nonphysical challenges testing memory and problem solving includes a labyrinth maze & puzzles, spinners, seating and areas to rest. Sensory Garden - Playing with smelling, tasting & touching plants and other landscaping elements. There will be opportunities for learning about the natural environment and making ‘scientific’ discoveries under existing shady trees.

Climbing Tower in the Mountain Zone - A focus on climbing and development of confidence, upper body strength & bone density development , this will be the most active and challenging zone within the playground.

There will be a variety of ways up and down (nets, platforms, ladders, ramps, hand holds) with a mining theme to reflect the industrial heritage of the region. This includes mineshafts disappearing into the ground and a giant poppet wheel! For users with mobility restrictions they will be able to achieve height and experience ‘climbing’. There will also be a double flying fox in this zone!

This article was written by Kelly Loftberg who although is no longer working on the project, has been an integral part of the process from day one.

See and Do

If your little one can’t get enough of LEGO construction, then LEGOLAND is a must see destination when planning your next overseas holiday. If you are concerned that LEGOLAND is not on the holiday map, you can ensure that a LEGOLAND will be close by with theme parks in Demark (Billund), Windsor (UK), California and Germany. There are also three future

LEGOLANDS currently being developed in Malaysia, Dubai and Florida. The parks are marketed to young families and although many of the parks have rides such as roller coasters, they are not as extreme as most theme park rides. All four of the parks include a Lego miniland, a model village which includes models of

landmarks and scenes from around the world made from millions of genuine Lego bricks. The parks' rides are all Lego themed; many are made to appear as if they are built out of Lego bricks. There is so much to see and do and even the young at heart will not be able to go past picking up a brick or two and constructing a model of their own. www.legoland.com
