4 of the Voting Rights Act. Section 4 of the VRA determined which states or localities required that changes to their voting laws be cleared by the U.S. Department of Justice or in federal court. Until the formula under Section 4 is redefined in a way that can pass muster in the Supreme Court, a key enforcement tool of the Voting Rights Act remains ineffectual.

Fast forward to 2017, President Trump issued an executive order that would create an “election integrity” commission.

The stated purpose of this commission was to combat voter fraud, but we know the true meaning behind an executive order of this nature.

It is to repeat the egregious mistakes of our past and once again prevent legitimate voters from exercising their constitutional rights to vote.

After passage of the VRA, nearly 1 million black voters registered to vote within just four years, including over fifty percent of the black voting age population in every southern state. We witnessed the number of black elected officials more than double in the South, increasing from 72 to 159, following the 1966 elections.

By the mid-1980s, there were more African Americans in public office across the South than throughout the rest of the nation combined.

Reviewing the great number of accomplishments made under the VRA, I find it difficult to reconcile that we need

an election fraud commission or investigations into such actions when there are more cases of voter intimidation and limitations placed on those who seek to be involved in the electoral process.

As your representative of District 30 and the state of Texas, it is my duty to address the concerns of countless Americans here in Congress. We must speak out against thinly-veiled commissions meant to suppress the vote.

We must bolster the Voting Rights Act to its former power and encourage others to combat voter suppression and protect unfettered access to the ballot.

When I say we, I am not limiting and placing the burden to protect voting rights on one group of people because it is simply a matter that impacts everyone in our state and country -- no matter the color of your skin.

Unfortunately those in black and brown communities tend to be targeted and are mostly impacted by the injustice when they are not able to participate in our democratic system.

However, this does not have to remain. I will continue to be involved in the dialogue between advocacy groups, constituents and elected officials to help find a solution that will diminish voter suppression.

NDA set to convene 104th Annual Convention and Exhibits with Stellar Line-up of Speakers

The 104th Annual Convention of the National Dental Association (NDA) will convene July 19-23, 2017, at the Sheraton Dallas Hotel.

The NDA, one of the oldest professional associations in America, is the premier dental organization for ethnic minorities representing more than 10,000 oral health professionals.

The mission of the NDA is to promote oral health equity among people of color through advocacy, mentoring dental students, and community outreach.

The annual convention features world–class continuing education, a state of the art product and resource center, and a variety of networking opportunities for oral health students and professionals alike.

Oral health professionals from across the country gather to learn the latest dental techniques and practice management solutions.

Her funeral service will be Thursday, July 20, 2017 at 1 p.m. at Shiloh Church, Garland, Texas, with Rev. Ronald Sessions officiating and Friday, July 21, 2017 at 1 p.m. at Rocky Mound Church of God In Christ with burial at Rocky Mound Cemetery, Rocky Mound, Texas under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home, Pittsburg, Texas.

She is survived by one daughter, Sondra Roney of Garland, Texas and three sons, Bobby Hashaway of Frisco, Texas , Dwight Hashaway of Grand Prairie, Texas, and Gary Hashaway of Cedar Hills, Texas; 15 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren.

New Chief is Grambling grad

After a nationwide search, Dallas, Texas has a new police chief and she’s the first female to hold the post.

City Manager T.C. Broadnax, in one of his most important decisions since taking the helm earlier this year, this week announced that Ulysha Renee Hall, Deputy Chief of the Detroit Police Department where she directed the city’s Neighborhood Policing Bureau, will lead Dallas’ force.

“I am honored to be chosen to lead the Dallas Police Department at this critical time in its history,” said the Grambling State University alum. “I look forward to building on the successes of the past, preserving community trust and ensuring the safety of our officers and the entire Dallas community.”

During a search that included a meet and greet featuring the top seven candidates, Chief Hall impressed many, and one retired police officer predicted that Hall would be the next chief, along with several others who also were impressed with local favorite Dallas Police Department Deputy Chief Malik Aziz and the other female finalist Seattle Police Department Deputy Chief Carmen Best.

At the announcement of her hiring, Chief Hall talked about passion, her love for people, serving the community, and her faith.

“I believe in community engagement,” she told a crowd gathered around her at the Dallas reception. Poised and focused, she candidly answered questions from citizens about her career, challenges in Detroit and her plans for Dallas. The one time she broke into a huge smile came when cheerfully acknowledging her Delta Sigma Theta Sorority sisters, which included city employee Tonya Derrick.

“The city of Dallas is fortunate to have a new police chief who brings a wealth of experience and believes her job is a true calling to serve,” said Leslie Swann, president of the Dallas Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. “May Chief Hall be a constant reminder of impeccable work ethic, character and an inspiration for us all.”

More than 55 community and business leaders participated in panel interviews of the top seven candidates, a process the City Manager described as diverse, inclusive and participatory.

“Chief Hall is a proven leader with a stellar background and a passion for public service,” Mr. Broadnax said. “These are qualities I believe are critical as we tackle crime to make our city safer while addressing organizational and policy issues within the department.”

Saying he was impressed with her “character and leadership skills,” Mr. Broadnax said he looked for someone who he felt could work best under his leadership style.

Dallas County District Attorney Faith Johnson, who is the first Black female to hold that post, applauded the choice and said she looks forward to working with the

new chief, who is also her sorority sister.

“I am proud that she is joining me and Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez on the growing list of females in top law enforcement positions in Dallas County,” District Attorney Johnson told members attending the national convention of the National Association of Negro Business & Professional Women’s Clubs, Inc. in Fort Worth this week.

Sheriff Valdez, in welcoming Chief Hall, said, “I am personally aware of the challenges that the first female chief will face.

My staff and I stand ready to help in any way that we can.”

The new chief has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Grambling and Master’s degrees in Security Administration and Intelligence Analysis from the University of Detroit Mercy.

A graduate of the FBI National Academy, she also completed the Police Executive Leadership Institute and is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police. As Deputy Chief in Detroit, Chief Hall developed and implemented comprehensive community policing and mentor programs, forged partnerships and established trust within minority communities while also building strong relationships between officers of all ranks and community stakeholders.

Under her leadership, the City of Detroit experienced a 40-year low in homicides and double-digit reductions in violent crime for three consecutive years.

She assumes her duties in Dallas on September 5.

Other candidates were: Deputy Chiefs Gary Tittle and Rick Watson of the Dallas Police Department, First Assistant Chief Michel Moore of the Los Angeles Police Department and Assistant Chief Luther Reynolds, Montgomery County (Maryland) Police Department.

He follows a credo that armed Hitler and marshaled every xenophobic movement since the beginning of time. Donald Trump believes that God favors White skin and ordained him and his kind to be superior to all other races and creeds.

Trump views 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue as Pan-Europeanism’s international headquarters.

Don’t get it twisted, when Trump was in Poland he

blew that dog whistle as long and as loud as he could. In 1990, Trump’s ex-wife Ivana, told Vanity Fair that he always kept a book on Hitler at his bedside. What’s more, we know he lacks the capacity to read much more than one book.

Nicholas Copernicus is the infamous mathematician and astronomer credited with placing the sun rather than the earth in the center of the universe. Sounds harmless enough but go deeper, because the wannabee Nazis in Trump’s creative core are subterranean and sinister.

I find the whole Christian Conservative movement to be the most two-faced brand of hypocrisy in American history.

But the plot to restore the suddenly “oppressed White man” back to his pre-slavery, pre-Apartheid, pre-colonial state is evil. Donald Trump has set the world on a path of death, destruction and delusion.

A word to the wise is sufficient, but only if you’re shrewd enough to listen.

Dear Alma, I’m in my 50’s, twice divorced, with no children.

I have a demanding job that keeps me busy and seriously disrupts my social life. I’ve been dating a man I met in the office. Things are going really well and we agreed to take the next step and meet each other’s family. When we met my family all went well. We recently attended one of his family gatherings. While there, I met his sister. He loves his sister and they have a really close relationship.

Here’s the issue, after we met and he walked away, she was really mean to me and implied that I was not her brother’s type of woman and I should not expect a relationship from our friendship. I was shocked, to put it mildly. She was totally crazy with it. I like him and I don’t want to end our rela-

tionship. Should I tell him what his sister said? If I do tell him, how should I do it? Thank you, I can’t wait to hear your take on this.

To answer your question: no, don’t mention a thing to the man you’re dating. You can handle “Sista Shady.” Continue down your path with this special guy and see where it leads. Check yourself periodically to make sure it doesn’t become a competition with his sister, because you know how we can be. Have fun, do your thing, and if this

becomes serious, you know who’s peeping in your window. Give her something to watch, because you know how we can be. LOL. Let me remind you: this relationship is between you and him, and no one else. If he proposes and marriage is in your future, then it’s time for the discussion. Again, don’t mention his sister specifically, just confide and confirm with each other that neither family members nor outsiders are ever welcome to impede or deliver any ‘ish that could potentially come between the two of you.

Something tells me, he won’t be surprised by the conversation.

Seems to me she’s worried that the relationship she has with her brother will change, if he has a special woman in his life. That’s a conversation that should take place between him and her, not you and her. Clearly, she’s got it twisted. I don’t think this is her first sister-brother rodeo, so there’s no need to worry right now. However, before you say “I do,” you need to let her know her cowgirl clowning ain’t never gonna be welcome in your barnyard of blessed assurance!

I Guess You Have to Call Me a Christian Spiritually Speaking

People really react to you differently when you tell them you’re studying the bible; particularly if they’ve known you as someone who has lived a bible free life. I’m not talking about other believers.

I’m talking about people who know you, perhaps those with whom you work, are in the same organizations as you, or whom you simply socialize with from time to time.

Maybe you even “ran the streets” with them. Their reaction is distinctly different from when you tell them you’re studying a foreign language or, returning to school to learn computers or, something as innocuous as taking a cooking class or ball room dancing. When you tell someone you’re in bible study, for any and everything.

For the most part, people tend to respond positively to a genuine effort to get closer to God. However, there is almost a universal questioning about whether or not you’re serious.

The question of your faith always comes up because most people have a hard time putting you and the Lord in the same thought pattern. It’s inevitable then, that people become a little ‘standoffish’ towards you because in all honesty, they really don’t know where you’re coming from.

Some are compelled to remember the sins you committed together.

Some just heard rumors about you, but have little proof that the rumors

are indeed true. For whatever the reasons, people have a hard time believing you because they can’t or haven’t made the effort themselves. I believe this because I’ve experienced astonishment, disbelief, skepticism and yes genuine joy, all because I’ve told someone I’m in bible study.

I’ve been pleasantly surprised that

I’ve come to understand that from now until the day I die, I need to be in some form of structured bible study. I hope to compliment this with informal reading and conscious personal spiritual investigation. To me once you get a glimpse of all that is contained in the written Word of God, you must have more. a lot of people I’ve known for a long time have opened up to me in ways that have been truly remarkable. I know things now about them spiritually that I would never have guessed before my admission of being in bible study. I can honestly say before then, I hardly knew them at all.

Our conversations have changed and subsequently, our relationship has changed; all because I let it be known that I had changed. Somewhere along the line I said something, did something that opened a side of me to others that allowed them to see me, hopefully in a different light.

logue has gone on for hours.

In other cases, it has brought to my attention that some people, rather than question me, question others about me.

When that has happened, I’m told, it’s usually brought up in such a way as to question my sincerity or, to be insulting at my audacity to think that I actually could be trying to order my steps to put me on a clear path to God. Like I said earlier, you need to be prepared to hear all kinds of things when you let people know you’re studying the Word. Remember studying the Word is a bit different than telling people you’re going to church. One is akin to habit, while the other is more like desired learning. Think about it.

I’ve come to understand that from now until the day I die, I need to be in some form of structured bible study.

I hope to compliment this with informal reading and conscious personal spiritual investigation. To me once you get a glimpse of all that is contained in the written Word of God, you must have more.

When the effort is genuine, it’s probably okay to assume that people really are reacting to a changed you.

Maybe they are seeing you behave differently and to the extent that their comfort or discomfort is a result of the new you, so be it. The good news is, if there was no reaction, there would probably be no real difference that anyone could see in you. So for those of you, who have wondered or worried about this, don’t.
