The Man with the Plan - Chuck Smith 1935-2017

Credited with launching many careers and using his insight to build stations that dominated the market, Chuck Smith’s life and contributions will be celebrated Saturday, November 4, 2017, 4p.m. at The Black Academy of Arts and Letters in Dallas. Charles "Chuck" Smith was born in Kosciusko, Mississippi to James and Mary Smith. He grew up in Milwaukee, WS., where as a teenager, Chuck's love of music led him to become a DJ at the local YMCA, which ultimately led him to become a DJ at 1590am WAWA radio station. As an adult he relocated briefly to Memphis, Tenn. where he worked at WDIA radio. In 1970, Chuck was part of a team hired to start a new radio station in Dallas, TX. for Service Broadcasting Corporation. Hired as the Music Director, he was eventually promoted to General Manager and remained with KKDA-AM and K104FM for 42 years. During Chuck's tenure with KKDA his leadership, guidance and mentoring helped to shape the careers of many up and coming young men and women in the African-American communities of DFW, who went on to become successful entertainers, entrepreneurs, politicians, and more. Some of those names include some of the biggest names in the broadcast business. He was the brainchild of “the music you grew up listening to” and was always ahead of his time. He was instrumental in bringing “community talk radio” to the Dallas Ft. Worth area, especially geared towards people who felt that they had no voice. One of D-FW’s most popular radio personalities, Willis Johnson, sums up the expressions of many: “I can’t say enough about Chuck. He was more than an employer for me, he was a mentor and extended father. We argued a lot, but we

which helped define Black Radio in Dallas/Ft.Worth which led K104fm to the Number 1 Radio Station (among all stations in Dallas Ft. Worth) for several years.

Here are some expressions from those who knew him: Mr Chuck Smith took a Big chance in bringing me to K104 back in the late 80s coming from a community radio station KNON 90.9fm. He gave me a chance to work at one of the Top Notch Stations in Dallas. ~ Nippy Jones I will miss you greatly Chuck; you hired me and taught me how to take my career seriously. I will miss those very very very very long air check meetings. ~ Y-vonne St. John

also strategized and won a lot together. My 35-plus years with him were special both professionally and personally. “He was the creator of many ideas that are still in place in the Dallas/FW community today and his fingerprints in radio are all over America. So many of us were impacted by his leadership and influence.... Thanks Chuck.” Many said that with Chuck Smith you could express your opinions without fear of retaliation. He was a quiet giant in the radio industry and many owe their careers and success to him. There was always an open door to Chuck to hear the knowledge and the wisdom of someone who didn’t want the public accolades but didn’t mind sharing with you to help you grow! Chuck leaves his wife Pearl, Sons Todd (Dena), Turhan (Raquel) and Ian, 7 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild to remember his love and words of wisdom from this day forward. His extended Service Broadcasting family and friends remember him fondly as the "Man with the Plan" behind many of the antics and schemes

Chuck was a uniquely brilliant man. I worked with Chuck and DJ Tom Joyner at KKDA- AM in the mid-seventies as the 22 yr. old news director. ~ Noah Lord Nelson Thank you Chuck for everything you taught me. You will be missed a lot.

~ Sam Putney

Mr. Chuck Smith was a major influence on my broadcasting career. I worked at K104 in 1977-1978 and went on to become PD at KZEY, Tyler,Tx and General Manager at KIOU AM Shreveport,La. I thank Mr. Chuck Smith for believing in me. ~ Al Hall

Chuck hired me when I was still in college to do the news at Soul Socking 73. This was my first big opportunity. He taught me much and I am proud to have worked for this giant in broadcasting. Rest In Peace man with the plan, boss, chief. ~ Ruth Allen Ollison A Celebration of his life will take place on November 4, at the Black Academy of Arts and Letters located at 1309 Canton St., Dallas at 4pm.

FREAKIN’ EATS

Blending food with extreme entertainment

Photos and Story By Eva D. Coleman

It started with Shhh... don’t tell. Well...the secret’s out! Celebrity chef Tre Wilcox’s Don’t Tell Supper Club is a hot new spot in downtown Dallas. Nestled in a corner at 2026 Commerce Street, the red carpet and stanchions leading up to the doors of the establishment give one an impression that something exclusive is going on inside. Stepping in you’ll notice decor you can’t help but canvas and hope to explore. The hostess staff up front greets each person with a smile and genuine pride. “I love working here and coming to work every day,” hostess Alexandra Nicole Piland said. “I had my birthday party here one day and started working here the next,” she shared. I later discovered that she had previously applied...so it wasn’t as surprising as I’d originally thought. Freakin’ Eats New Dallas venue blends food with extreme entertainment.

What was refreshing was the amount of care she gave, which could have resulted from her experience of being a customer first. After being seated, a complimentary drink they call “mooze booze” is placed in front of you. When asked what was in it, the waitress smiled and replied, “It changes daily, just something to sip on while you wait.” A free alcoholic beverage? Now that’s

classy. It’s dark. It’s loud. Don’t expect to tell your date across from you, or guests of a large party, anything. Just take it

all in, order from the menu and eat... all while enjoying live music on stage, acrobatics and magic shows in between sets and the magician making his way throughout the room. He swallowed a sword, and asked me to pull it out! The magician was friendly and engaging. As I pulled the long sword from his mouth, I couldn’t dare look at him! I felt the movement though...it definitely did not feel like a cheesy retractable one. Each food item that came out was plated beautifully. Great tastes followed. I highly recommend the Grilled Wild King Salmon with Spicy Chipotle Jack Cheese Grits and Tequila Lime Sauce! The private and VIP spaces are divine, including a second floor with stunning decor and eclectic views. Visit Don’t Tell Supper Club for the good food, stage and table-side entertainment. We can’t continue to go along to get along. Everyone thought, present company included, that General Kelly would be able to deter Trump from his path of narcissism, ignorance and brinksmanship…But alas…we was wrong. Kelly apparently shares Trump’s insolence and disrespect. Kelly held his ground Monday: ”Oh, no,” Kelly said. “No. Never. Well, I’ll apologize if I need to. But for something like that, absolutely not. I stand by my comments.” John Kelly wears the prestige and prominence that comes with being a Four Star General. That’s commendable. Likewise he wears the stain that comes with Trump. That’s four star foolishness! Vincent L. Hall is an author, activist and award-winning columnist.

Located in Houston, Texas Southern University will be awarded $15,000 as the third-place winner. Edwards, Ford multicultural communications manager. "With broad participation across our HBCU campuses, the Drive2Greatness campaign represents more than a contest, serving as an important forum to spotlight Ford's legacy commitment and support of this vital higher education community." The 2017 Ford HBCU Drive2Greatness national program kicked off Labor Day weekend at the Tom Joyner Family Reunion in Orlando, Florida, where Florida A&M University was awarded $10,000 to support its STEAM initiatives. The program encouraged students, alumni and supporters to earn points for their favorite school through online voting, including via social media platforms using a Ford-dedicated hashtag for each school. The program was also supported through a partnership with national morning show hosts Tom Joyner and Rickey Smiley – two longtime Historically Black Colleges and Universities advocates who are committed to helping African American students go further in their studies and careers.

"The Drive2Greatness program is just one more way Ford continues in its efforts to partner with local communities to go further as a company when it comes to our commitment to higher education, Historically Black Colleges and Universities and the growth of African American students," said Edwards. To illustrate what awaits the grand prize winner, Ford showcased a preview of the Ultimate Homecoming Takeover with a weeklong series of activities that included a fashion show, DJ battle, empowerment expo, a lunch and learning mentoring session, student and alumni rideand-drives, a tailgate party and other activities on the campuses of Morehouse College and Spelman College in Atlanta last month. Boyfriend Doesn’t Help Enough

Ask Alma:

Alma Gill’s newsroom experience spans more than 25 years, including various roles at USA Today, Newsday and the Washington Post. Email questions to: alwaysaskalma@gmail.com. Follow her on Facebook at “Ask Alma” and Twitter

Dear Alma: My name is K. I’ve been with my boyfriend almost four years. He works but doesn’t make enough to help me. He MAKES UP for it though in EVERY OTHER AREA, and he’s also a little controlling. He’s taken my engagement ring from me three times and I went and bought my own replacement ring and he told me that NO OTHER RING should be on that finger, and made me take it off. Should I continue in this relationship? Oh and YES I Do Love him. Anonymous Dear Anonymous, Well K, it depends. Yes if you’re 16 and no if you’re 26. Newsflash! Your boyfriend isn’t ready to get married and neither are you. When you love someone and you’re ready to commit, you don’t take back the ring every time

there’s a problem. And you especially don’t go out and get a replacement ring, frontin’ to your friends, so they don’t see the real deal, ain’t got no skills, you’re dealing with. What your partner offers, is who they are. You can’t change, transform or rearrange anyone. Wise up to the truth of your relationships, otherwise you’re living in the fantasy of what you want your life to be Alma
