Welcome to the 2018 Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival We're back again for our 27th year, celebra ng the cultural, literary and arts heritage of Penola, the fine wines of Coonawarra and our premium regional produce.

Our 2018 programme is a shining example of how a small regional fes val can 'pack a punch'!

The rich history of the Arts Fes val keeps us on an inspiring track as we con nue searching for new and evolving ideas. Co-Opera's madcap produc on of The Barber of Seville, featuring the most famous tune in opera, is one of the most popular works in the repertoire. Co-Opera's hilarious take on the work, will show why this opera s ll ckles audiences over 200 years a er it was wri en. Viewing on the big screen at Coonawarra Hall is the Comedy / Drama / Romance 'Ali's Wedding'. This film had its world premiere at the Adelaide Film Fes val in 2016 and won the Audience Award at the Sydney Film Fes val in 2017.

A er a "white lie" which spirals out of control, a neuro c, naive and musically gi ed Muslim cleric's eldest son must follow through with an arranged marriage, except he is madly in love with an Australian born-Lebanese girl.

Ali's Wedding is an affec onate and poignant story about family, duty and love in mul -cultural Australia. Depic ng the lives of a Muslim family in Melbourne with authen city and warmth, it finds the common bonds of all families: parents who want the best for their children and children who are trying to work out their place in the world.

Truth is stranger than fic on. Ali's Wedding is based on the real-life experience of lead actor Osamah Sami. Osamah Sami won an AACTA Award for Best Original Screenplay which he wrote in collabora on with Andrew Knight.

This is a fundraiser in support of the Penola Coonawarra Stand Like Stone Wellbeing Fund, the benefit of which is solely targeted at charitable projects that benefit the Penola Coonawarra area.

He will present material from his three previous Adelaide Fringe Shows, Hard Rubbish, Smoked Ham and Actors Drunks & Babies Never Hurt Themselves. He describes it as a Trilogy of Crap but, in essence the audience get THE PURE GOLD, the VERY BEST of Peter Goers and his 40 years in Show Biz. It's a nostalgic trip down memory lane as Goers tells yarns about Adelaide, South Australian characters and those he has met in showbiz like, Barry Humphries, Toni Lamond, Ethel Merman, Frank Thring and many more. Ar st blacksmith Bruce Kennewell will be going at it with hammer & tongs turning scrap iron into beau fully hand wrought works of art. His forge is 90 years old, the Peter Wright anvil was made 120 years ago, the process dates to the iron age. Watch it being made then take home something that will last. Sales on site.

The creators of the lm ‘El Mar, Mi Alma’ and the LP Headland sound/ track have collaborated on a new visual album centred on the Lennox/Byron coastline.

Headland began as a soundtrack to a collec on of super8 pictures depic ng surfing culture of the 70s. Contemporary footage by award winning filmmaker Stephen L. Jones ‘El Mar, Mi Alma’ (2012) overscores each composi on for their second fulllength release. This collabora on is performed as a visual album, consis ng of original musical scores played to projected film sequences.

Catherine Edith Macauley Mar n (1848–1937) was an Australian novelist who published her work anonymously or under pseudonyms such as M. C., Mrs Alick MacLeod and Ishbel. Catherine migrated with her family to South Australia in 1855, se ling in Robe and later in Naracoorte.
