Drawing on the beginnings in Russia to current realities, Doukhobor history and culture will be examined with attention to themes of peace, pacifism, violence and nonviolence, community and utopia. The course will include field trips and guest speakers. This course is open to anyone. It is also available as a University Transfer Course as 3 credits.

Selkirk Wilderness Skiing Closes for the Season April 16, 2015

Whitewater Ski Resort Beach Party

On Thursday, April 16th, Selkirk Wilderness Skiing Limited will close its operations on Meadow Mountain. All signage, which has been in place since December, will be removed on April 16th, save and except for signage restricting access to and around the lodge site. This winter marks the 14th anniversary of the Meadow Mountain Signage Plan; a community and government sanctioned Agreement which provides a legal closure of the skiing terrain tendered to Selkirk Wilderness by the Province of British Columbia. Compliance with the Signage Plan has been greatly appreciated and is critical to our continued success, and to the safety of our guests and public users of Meadow Mountain.

We ask that the public continues to respect the Signage Plan up to and including April 16th.

Leon Rolingher

In 1987 Leon met his loving soulmate and wife, Debbie Folmar at Merrill Lynch where they both worked. In 1991 the couple partially retired and moved to Ainsworth, British Columbia, and in 2010 they became full-time residents of Idaho. Shortly thereafter, Leon received the diagnosis of FTD. Always his partner in all his endeavors, Debbie was his full-time caregiver until September, 2012, when the progression of the disease dictated that he move to a care facility.

Sept 28, 1948 ~ Nov 20, 2014 The charming, generous, inquisitive and hilarious Leon Rolingher passed away on November 20, 2014 in Sandpoint, Idaho, having endured a prolonged battle with the brain disease Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD).

Leon was born on September 28, 1948, in Edmonton, Alberta to Gene and Thelma Rolingher. He grew up with older brother Solomon, and younger sister Gaye. Leon left Edmonton at age 18 to attend Mesa College in Grand Junction, Colorado. After graduating, Leon was hired by Time Life and had a very successful career as a Vice President of Marketing of their book division. Then, true to his lifelong sense of adventure, he decided to try something different.

Leon had many careers throughout his life in Washington, California and British Columbia, from developing a call center at Merrill Lynch to managing a political campaign, and made a success of them all. At the same time, Leon had a big heart and helped anyone in need.

Throughout his disease, Leon woke up with a huge smile on his face. From the time he moved to the care facility until his death, Leon’s friends, from Edmonton to San Diego, called him regularly. He didn’t always remember everyone, but he was always happy to say a few words to a well-wisher.

Leon Rolingher is survived by his wife, mother, siblings and their children, as well as by Debbie’s family, who loved, respected and embraced Leon as their own. Leon

will be missed by everyone he touched, but most especially and profoundly by Debbie.

Habitat For Humanity To Travel The World In 80 Days

Starting May 10, Habitat for Humanity Canada Global Village volunteers will embark on an 80-day circumnavigation of the globe, building homes and hope for families in Canada and abroad in recognition of Habitat for Humanity’s 10th anniversary of volunteer engagement, international housing work and community development projects.

Navigating eastward, 16 volunteer teams will build homes in 14 locations. Starting and ending in Canada, builds will happen in Prince Edward Island, Guatemala, El Salvador, Trinidad, Chile, Romania, Portugal, Zambia, Vietnam, Cambodia, the Philippines, Hawaii, the Yukon and Alberta. For five days at each location, Canadian volunteers will work with local families to provide safe housing, strengthen communities and enrich lives.

“Through Habitat for Humanity Global Village, volunteers travel to locations in Canada and abroad to build affordable housing and improve the lives of families,” said Mark Rodgers, President and CEO of Habitat for Humanity Canada. “Since 2005, 13,000 Canadian volunteers have made a difference for over 950 families in 47 countries.

Around the World in 80 Days is a celebration of this and future achievements.”

The idea for Around the World in 80 Days came from veteran Global Village Team Leader, Alan Rendall, who first volunteered with Habitat on a Global Village trip to El Salvador in 2009.

“I am passionate about Global Village and wanted to raise awareness of the great work Canadians have been doing abroad through this program over the past 10 years,” said Rendall. “Trips are the perfect combination of travel, a genuine cultural experience and the opportunity to give back to families in need.”

Rendall is kicking off Around the World in 80 Days by leading his volunteer team to PEI, building a home over five days that will transform the lives and future prospects of a low-income family.

Volunteers are still being accepted to participate on Around the World in 80 Days teams. West Kootenay And Boundary Regional Science Fair

The West Kootenay Regional Science Fair will be held in Nelson at LV Rogers High School on April 11.The fair will be attended by students from kindergarten to grade 12 from Nelson, Creston, Kaslo, Castlegar, Trail, Salmo, Grand Forks and areas in between.

The three top senior students will then be awarded the opportunity to represent our region at the 2015 Canada Wide Science Fair to be held in May in Fredericton, New Brunswick. In the past two years, West Kootenay students have won a total of $14,000 in scholarships and prize money in addition to mentorship opportunities with top researchers. Keen Creek Drainage Public Meeting

Everyone is invited to attend a public meeting on Thursday, April 2, 7 pm at the Kaslo Seniors Hall. The Kaslo & District Community Forest woodlands manager will discuss proposed forestry development up Keen Creek. Keen Creek joins the Kaslo River at South Fork.

To access the cutting permit, the plan is to upgrade the Keen Creek road to approximately 13 km. This will require installing three bridge structures and significant fill support structures along the road where the outside of the road is failing. The goal is to work with the Ministry of Forests to upgrade the additional 3 - 5 km of the road so there will be permanent 4x4 vehicle access to the Kokanee Glacier Park boundary.

Road work may begin in May 2015 (weather dependent). Harvesting operations wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t start until August or September 2015, but this schedule is very dependent on log markets and other factors. This is an important development for Kaslo & District Community Forest (KDCFS).

Approximately 30% of its operating area/volume is in the Keen Creek drainage.

KDCFS encourages all interested parties, especially South Fork residents to attend the April 2 meeting. It is an opportunity to get informed, share information and discuss any concerns you may have with the development.
