Oxygen Art Centre’s 1st Annual Youth Arts Festival will take place this year over the weekend of February 14 - 15 in Nelson, BC. The premiere event of the festival is the Talent Slam at the Capitol Theatre on Saturday, February 14 at 8 pm. Anyone aged 15 - 29 and performing in any discipline was welcome to audition for a spot in this showcase of talented, young Kootenay artists. Selected acts receive one-on-one mentorship with seasoned professionals, to develop their acts for the big night!

This year’s Talent Slam artists are; musicians and singers Tibo Kolmel, Trulee, Abhijith Kishan Ramesh, Alexandra Schlosser, Bryce Harrison, Clayton Mallette, Keegan Schuh & Kevin Wasilenkoff and comedians and performance artists Espoir Segbeaya, Zorn Rose, Morgan Beck, Lilyahna Miller and Dierdra McCrory and dancers Oksana Maslechko, Shanti Harris, Serafina Christine, Richelle Lapot and Bronwen Bird, with MCs Dunavan Janzen-Morris and Galen Boulanger. Mentors this year are current and former City of Nelson Cultural Ambassadors, Lucas Myers and Bessie Wapp and Dance Fusion founder, Slava Doval.

Tickets for the Talent Slam are available from the Capitol Theatre box office and cost is $5 for children and youth (aged 29 and under) and $10 for adults. The production of the festival itself is also a mentored work experience opportunity for the youth coordinators involved. In addition to the Talent Slam there will be a Back Stage Lounge, a creative hang out space at Oxygen Art Centre on Sunday, February 15 between 3 - 9pm with free programming and workshops for youth aged 15 - 29.

Moms Go Virtual For Healthy Babies

For the first time in BC expectant mothers can participate in virtual visits with their maternity care provider directly from their local family doctor’s office, thanks to new tele-maternity (video conferencing) technology developed as a part of a Shared Care/Kootenay Boundary Division of Family Practice pilot project. The project is funded in partnership by Doctors of BC and the Ministry of Health.

Women in rural areas have unique challenges to accessing care pre and post pregnancy. Geography, weather, and costs of travel can all create significant barriers to receiving timely maternity care.

As a solution to the problem, doctors from the Kootenay Boundary Division of Family Practice FREE

and maternity care providers have teamed up to offer tele-maternity through local doctors’ offices in the region.

Accessing the service is easy. Women wishing to use the service make their appointment with their regular family doctor and their maternity care provider at the same time. When the woman arrives at her local doctor’s office, she has a physical exam with her family doctor and then meets virtually with her maternity care provider to discuss results and other care planning.

“This is a new way of applying technology that has become familiar to anyone who chats online,” explains Mona Mattei, project manager for the tele-maternity pilot. Mattei says they have tele-maternity sites at doctors’ offices ready to participate in Midway, Christina Lake, Grand Forks, New Denver and Salmo, and more locations are in the works.

If you are interested in using tele-maternity, contact your family doctor and ask them to join the service. Or contact Mona Mattei, mmattei@divisionsbc.ca 250-443-1899 and pass on your doctor’s name for follow up.

Land Linking Matches Farmers And Landowners

Kootenay demand for local food is on the rise. A recent Rural Development Institute poll found that Basin residents not only want a local diet, but 69% are also prepared to pay a premium for local foods. With our region’s farmers among the oldest in the country, the market seems to be calling out for more young farmers to help meet demand. The catch is that aspiring young farmers face a wide range of barriers to getting established from a lack of good training options to the high cost of farmland.

In a blog post published this week, former NelsonCreston MLA and longtime organic farmer, Corky Evans, makes a compelling plea on behalf of young and aspiring Kootenay farmers. “The land I live on in Winlaw cost $10,000 in 1972. It is now appraised at $400,000... or 40 times as much as I paid,” writes the one-time Minister of Agriculture and Food. “In 1972 an unskilled labourer in the Kootenays (as I was then) made approximately $600 a month. In order for a young person today to have a proportionally equal chance to acquire and pay off the same piece of land, they would have to earn 40 times $600, or $24,000 a month.”

Evans’ article is part of an effort to promote a provincewide series of Land Linking events. Young Agrarians, a BC based young farmer network, is hosting the events to build networks of support around transitioning the province’s farmland to the next generation. Young Agrarians work involves advocacy for innovations like regional farmland trusts and practical, short-term strategies like match-making land-seekers and land-owners.

Land Linking events combine a practical workshop on the ins and outs of alternative land access arrangements (options like leasing and licensing land) with a potluck social. “Our main hope is to create opportunities for people with land and people looking for land to connect with each other,” says Kootenay Young Agrarians Coordinator and Creston Valley farmer, Laura Hannant. “By hosting the workshops and sharing resources, like our BC Land Access Guide, we also hope to connect people with the kind of information that can help make a land match work well and last over time.”

These Kootenay Land Linking workshops will be held from 1 - 6 pm in Winlaw on Thursday, February 12 and in Invermere on Saturday, February 14. Workshops will be followed by potluck socials open to all. A more informal gathering will be held in Creston on Saturday, February 21. All events are free or by donation. Ron is survived by his brother Ed Roshinsky (Idella) of Slocan, BC, brother Alf Roshinsky of Kelowna, BC, sister Anita Delorme (Len) of Cabri, SK, brother Wilbur Roshinsky (Diane) of Surrey, BC, sister Wilma Preissl of Kelowna, BC, and brother Mervin Roshinsky (Sharon) of Westbank, BC, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and their families. Ron was predeceased by his parents Joe & Cecelia Roshinsky, brother Clarence Roshinsky, and sisters Vivian Schneider and Nataline Roshinsky.

Ron was born in Viscount, Saskatchewan on Dec. 15, 1938 in a family of 10 children. His parents moved the family to Rutland, BC in 1956. In 1960, Ron married Joy and they started their family. They moved to Winlaw in 1976 where they continued to raise their children until they were grown. Ron and Joy then moved to their home in Castlegar.

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Ron Roshinsky. Ron passed away on January 12, 2015 at the age of 76 years in Trail Hospital. He will be dearly missed by his loving wife Joy of 54 years, his son Kim Roshinsky of Rosebery BC, his daughter Jody Storgaard (Quentin) of Castlegar, his daughter Loni Chernenkov (Ely) of Castlegar, and his daughter Heather Roshinsky of Crescent Valley.

He will also be missed by his grandchildren, David Storgaard (Andrea), Jackie Storgaard, Kelsey Turner, Taylor Turner, Randall Boisvert, Jordan Boisvert, Brendan Roshinsky and Cody Chernenkov; and great-grandchildren, Elissa Storgaard, Emma Storgaard, Mya Storgaard, Memphis Storgaard, and Shale Roshinsky.

Ron was a proud father, father-in-law, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He loved to spend his summers at the trailer at their son’s place in Rosebery. He enjoyed the outdoors, either fishing or puttering around outside keeping himself busy. Ron did not like to sit still.

Ron loved woodworking in his little shop where he would spend hours on his scroll saw making all kinds of wood projects to give to his family and friends.

Until his passing, Ron was always there when any of his children or grandchildren needed a helping hand. Ron will be remembered by his warm smile, sense of humour, and the ability to strike up a conversation with anyone.

A memorial service was held on January 17, 2015 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Trail, BC. Should family and friends wish, donations in Ron’s memory can be made to the Heart and Stroke Fund.

The family would like to extend their thanks and appreciation for all the beautiful flowers, cards, food, and warm sentiments.

A special thank you to everyone at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, with special mention to Bishop Peter Redekop and the ladies Relief Society for helping organize such a beautiful service and luncheon.

The family would also like to extend their gratitude to Dr. Trenholm and the nurses at KBRH, who provided warm and loving care for Ron and to the family during this very difficult time.

Bonnie is a sweet and smart smoke colored female rabbit around the age of 6 months old. She was brought in on January 6th, 2015 by a Good Samaritan who found her with her abandoned litter. Unfortunately, Bonnie was the only one who survived.

Within days of being at the shelter, Bonnie taught herself to use the litter box, which some rabbits struggle with. She enjoys gentle affection and likes to sit in your lap when she feels safe. She likes to run and play and would make a great pet for someone who has experience with rabbits. A home where she gets time out of her kennel for exercise would be great – just keep her away from any cords as rabbits love to chew!

Bingo With The Lions!

The Lions club was founded in 1917 by Melvin Jones with the hopes of helping those less fortunate. The Lions Club has since become the worlds largest volunteer organization with having members in 192 countries.

Some of the main goals of Lionism is to help the blind and seeing impaired by providing seeing eye dogs as well as eye care and glasses. Children’s needs and the hospitals are also very high on our list.

Since our Charter night in 1971, the Beaver Valley Club has been very fortunate to be able to help many local citizens, organizations and societies such as Parkinson’s, M.S., Sanctuary, West Kootenay Brain Injury, Justice Resource Center, Red Cross, Kootenay Boundary Hospital, all the area Food Banks and many others.

We also do our part for L.C.I.F. (Lions Club International Foundation). This foundation meets vital worldwide needs beyond the reasonable capabilities of local Lions acting alone such as World Disasters, Sight First and under privileged countries.

Bingo (our fundraiser) enables us to donate, and our numbers are down, so please help. Come join us for a fun evening of Bingo, every Wednesday, 6 pm at the Fruitvale Hall.

Beaver Valley Lions are always looking for those of you that would love to give back to the community, either by inquiring into becoming a Lion or your support by coming out to Bingo.

Have roses, boxed sweets and fancy dinners not been doing much for your latest attempts to woo your love?

The 18th annual Great Backyard Bird Count is a joint project by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society in partnership with Bird Studies Canada.

From February 13 to 16, count the birds you spot for at least 15 minutes a day on one or more days and enter your sightings at BirdCount.org. The collective data helps scientists create snapshots of bird populations worldwide.

Last year, a total of 4,296 species were sighted with a total of 12,748,756 individual birds counted worldwide! Spread the love to your feathery friends by making a pinecone bird feeder at home and to bring on your nature walks!

Escape To A Nature Preserve: Whether you delight in the cover of ancient woods or the embrace of open prairies, there are many places to visit for all ages and activity levels, with some surprisingly not far from urban centres.

Be it a day trip or a brisk walk, a return to nature helps you unwind from a buildup of stress. Many parks offer equipment rental and guided tours for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing this time of year. Some itineraries may even involve a nose-to-beak encounter with the sociable chickadee.

Not sure where to go? Conservation organizations like the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) offer many publicly accessible reserves to satisfy your winter wanderlust. Be sure to pack a thermos of hot cocoa to share!

A Winter-Spring Affair In Tandem: For the stay-athome couple, how about getting your hands dirty in a twopart bombshell affair – seed bomb making that is. A seed bomb is essentially a nugget of soil and seed mix, strategically tossed to re-wild parts of the city. Once thrown, the bombs help encourage the spread of natives species. With cheap and easy-to-find ingredients, you can easily make a batch in winter and bomb away come spring.

The most recent economic statistic in a series of published metrics highlighting our thriving economy is total capital investment in regional health facilities.

Over $2.7 Million dollars have been invested in the Lower Columbia region health care facilities over the past 2013/2014 fiscal year!

Some key investments the Interior Health Association (IHA) has contributed to in the past two years include new digital diagnostic mammography equipment, a new fluoroscopy multipurpose machine that allows for improved real-time (fluoroscopy) and regular x-rays as well as a new security system for Columbia View Lodge.

Since 2002, the IHA has invested a staggering $38M in capital investments in the Lower Columbia region, recognizing the importance of maintaining equipment and facilities and providing our residents access to state of the art technology. The IHA continues to invest in the future of health care in our region with another $1.5 million in planned investments for the next fiscal year at KBRH; including electrical upgrades, updated monitoring equipment for surgical patients and a new ultrasound machine.

Grant Writing Workshops Applications Now Accepted

To assist those interested in applying for Arts, Culture and Heritage Program grants from Columbia Basin Trust, Krista Patterson and Natasha Smith of the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance (CKCA) will present workshops on how to apply and what to expect from the application process. The Trust’s Arts, Culture and Heritage grants are managed and administered by CKCA. Individuals of all artistic disciplines are invited to attend the workshops, as well as arts, culture and heritage organizations residing in the Columbia Basin.

The Trust proudly supports initiatives and projects that highlight Basin culture and heritage, and for 2015/16, CKCA is receiving $706,000.

Climate Change Debate

Award winning Canadian author and social activist Naomi Klein is coming to the West Kootenay in April to speak about her new book, This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. the Climate, a powerful analysis of the casual relationship between capitalism and climate change.

The Selkirk College Mir Centre for Peace Lecture Series event will take place at the Brilliant Cultural Centre in Castlegar on April 11. Tickets are now on sale.

Released in 2014, Klein’s latest offering is a New York Times non-fiction bestseller and winner of the Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize for Nonfiction. In This Changes Everything, Klein exposes the myths that are clouding the climate debate by offering a compelling critique that an unregulated global market system is directly responsible for warming the planet to levels that threaten our existence and that time is running out.

“Forget everything you think you know about global warming,” states Klein’s website. “The really inconvenient truth is that it’s not about carbon — it’s about capitalism.

The convenient truth is that we can seize this existential crisis to transform our failed economic system and build something radically better.”

Klein further argues in This Changes Everything that climate change could become a catalyzing force for positive change as it possibly one of the best arguments “progressives have ever had to demand the rebuilding and reviving of local economies.”

“This is will be a wonderful opportunity for people to listen to a world renowned author/activist who is successfully stimulating discussion about climate change and who ultimately offers an optimistic message in the face of crisis,” says Malange. “We expect a full house in April and are looking forward to the impression she will leave on our communities.”
