Attention: vegetation management The purpose of the proposed Pest Management Plan (PMP) is to manage wood rot, wood pests and mechanical damage caused by pests on wood structures located on power line corridors, road frontage areas, generation facilities and electrical facilities within the FortisBC service area, including wood structures on FortisBC owned or leased property. The FortisBC service area is located in proximity to the communities of Creston, Crawford Bay, Kaslo, Slocan, South Slocan, Nelson, Castlegar, Salmo, Trail, Fruitvale, Grand Forks, Greenwood, and Midway, in the Okanagan Valley from Osoyoos to Kelowna, and in the Similkameen Valley from Princeton to Keremeos.

The pest management methods proposed for use include stubbing (nonchemical), pole replacement (non-chemical) and wood preservative treatments (internal and external). The use of wood preservative pesticides is intended within the area to which the PMP applies. The common name (and examples of trade names) of the pesticides proposed for use under this plan include: copper naphthenate, sodium fluoride, borax (Cop-R-Plastic, CobraWrap, CuRap20), metam sodium (Woodfume, Guardsman Post and Pole Fumigant), disodium octaborate tetrahydrate (Tim-Bor Professional), boron, boric acid, copper (Impel Boron Rods II, CobraRod), and bendiocarb (Ficam D).

Application methods include: external bandages, internal liquid and solid treatments, and external insecticide treatments.

The proposed duration of the PMP is from May 1, 2015 to April 30, 2020. A draft copy of the proposed PMP and maps of the proposed treatment areas may be examined online at fortisbc.com or by contacting the Applicant listed above.

A person wishing to contribute information about a proposed treatment site, relevant to the development of the pest management plan, may send copies of the information to the applicant within 30 days of the publication of this notice and before February 13, 2015.

Rail Trail Gets Support From Heritage Credit Union The Slocan Valley Heritage Trail Society (SVHTS) is pleased to announce the purchase of a new snowmobile thanks to the generous support of the Heritage Credit Union (HCU). The Heritage Credit Union recently made it possible for the SVHTS to realize their goal of replacing their aging snow grooming equipment by making a $13000 donation to the society. This funding has allowed the society to purchase a new SkiDoo Skandic 900 snowmobile to help groom the 50 km Slocan Valley Rail Trail.

As stated by Wilf Rimmer, Manager of the Slocan Valley Branch of the Heritage Credit Union. “This donation is a tangible show of support for the valuable work of society members and dedicated volunteers who take care of the Slocan Valley Rail Trail all year long”.

SVHTS Chairperson Helene Dostaler stated. “This is an amazing show of support from the HCU. We thought we were in for a long road trying to achieve our goal and they have shown us just how strong the community supports what we are doing. It is so very rewarding.”

The purchase of the snowmobile is part of a $25,000 equipment replacement project the society began in early 2014. Dostaler continues, “Our new winter equipment includes a new groomer/ski track setter bought with Columbia Basin Trust Community Initiatives Program (Dot Day) and some of our reserves from membership fees and donations. While our older equipment still runs, it will allow us to groom and track set the rail trail faster, easier and more efficiently’.

An additional grant from Walter Popoff (RDCK Area H Director) was also essential to the society achieving their goal. They are now hoping for more snow so everyone gets out and enjoys the magic of the Slocan Valley Rail Trail. Eliza Fry Exhibits At The Nelson Library Maps and wheels make up the latest exhibition at the Nelson Public Library with the work of Kaslo artist Eliza Fry. Fry comes by her interest in maps honestly. She spent her childhood moving between the prairies and the west coast, and has moved more than 50 times in her lifetime.

Somehow over the miles she has collected stories, and these become woven into mixed media works that incorporate maps, wheels, cities, roadways and shorelines.

The three large pieces in the show reflect these sensibilities. Water Sustains Us, Water Defines Us incorporates an old blueprint of surveyed lots near Queen’s Bay that Fry found in a Langham storeroom that was “tattered and torn and lent itself very well to being repurposed,” she says.

Poem combines maps of BC and Vancouver and references the artist’s love of the ocean. A diptych, World Traveller 2X, combines and old school map of the USSR with stencils made from a drawing of a bicycle, “alludes to the travels I have never done.”

As the great-granddaughter of the English artist and art historian Roger Fry, Eliza Fry may have inherited her artistic sensibilities and storytelling nature. “His art filled the homes of my childhood. Looking at it was an ongoing inspiration,” she says.

Fry’s multimedia paintings and assemblages are a thoughtful exploration and celebration of the roads she has travelled, and through them, we may see our own journeys. The exhibition continues until the end of February.

The answer is simple: visit your local Return-It Depot or ElectroRecycle participating location. If you recycle your older items, rather than transferring them to the basement or guest room, you’ll save energy from standby power, and save money. Plus you’ll clear out some clutter.

As an alternative to dropping off your unused electronics at a depot, you can consider dropping off usable items at a thrift shop or charitable organization.

With hundreds of locations throughout British Columbia, there’s likely to be a Return-It Depot or ElectroRecycle approved location near you. Visit the Return-It Depot or ElectroRecycle website to view an interactive map of all locations in the province.

You can also use your smartphone GPS to find the recycling location closest to you. Download the Recycling Council of British Columbia app (available on both Apple and Android devices) to find the nearest depot.

Lacey is a high energy 2 year old Terrier mix, with white wiry hair. She knows her basic commands, but will need work on basic obedience, leash training and recall. She was crate trained in her last home, and we recommend that continues in her new home.

She tries hard to please but has a difficult time staying still for long. Lacey plays well with other dogs and would do well in a home with a playmate.

Given patience and training, Lacey will settle well into a home with an active owner.

Learn How To Quit Smoking! â&#x20AC;&#x153;Giving up smoking is the easiest thing in the world. I know because Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve done it thousands of times.â&#x20AC;?

Quitting smoking and staying quit, isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t easy. It takes support, and a few good strategies. The Nelson Public Library and the BC Lung Associationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s QuitNow program are teaming up to help on Tuesday, January 13 at 7 pm.

This free presentation by QuitNow Health Promoter Louise Poole is scheduled to precede Weedless Wednesday, which this year falls on January 21. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to quit at this session,â&#x20AC;? explains Poole. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is an opportunity to get some free information to help you quit when youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re ready, whether thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s during National Non-Smoking Week, or any time.â&#x20AC;?

For almost 40 years Canadians have butted out during National Non-Smoking Week and made Weedless Wednesday a completely smoke-free day. Falling as it does in the third week of January, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also a chance to make good on a New Yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s resolution. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are so many aids available today, quitting really is achievable,â&#x20AC;? says Poole.

The presentation offers a chance to learn about the free supports available to help smokers quit, and get the latest information on electronic cigarettes. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also an opportunity get a lung test for carbon monoxide, a by-product of tobacco smoke.

Smoking is a risk factor for lung cancer, heart disease, stroke, chronic respiratory disease and other conditions. Today, about 20% of Canadians aged 12 and over, roughly five million people, smoke, whether itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s daily or occasionally.

If these numbers seem high, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s helpful to note that according to a 2014 study, six out of ten Canadians who have been smokers in the past have now quit. By offering this free information session, QuitNow and the Library hope to encourage more to join the growing numbers of non-smokers.
