• Make laundry a breeze: hang dry half of your laundry to save up to $50 while keeping unnecessary heat out of your house.

• Fire up the barbeque: cook outside to reduce the use of your stove or oven.

• Keep your cool! Take shorter, cooler showers. Reduce your shower time by one minute and save $15 per person.

The Centre is thrilled to be hosting a free community event which aims to thank the organizations and individuals who have supported the NIMC over the past 20 years.

We are honoured to welcome the Consul General of Japan Mr. Seiji Okura as a special guest, as well as a wonderful line-up of presenters, activities, and demonstrations in appreciation of Japanese culture and the Nikkei legacy.

The Nikkei Internment Memorial Centre in New Denver is a National Historic Site dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of the internment of over 22,000 Japanese Canadians during the Second World War. Located on the site of a former internment camp, the original buildings, period artifacts, interpretive displays, and Heiwa Teien garden chronicle this extraordinary episode in Canadian history.

The Nikkei Internment Memorial Centre 20th Anniversary Fundraiser Dinner & Silent Auction will be held Saturday, August 9, at 7 pm at The Bosun Hall, New Denver; tickets are $60. Enjoy a Japanese and West Kootenay inspired buffet dinner followed by presenters, a silent auction, and live evening entertainment. Come support the NIMC and join us for dinner West Kootenay style!

Nadine Podmoroff of the Duhamel Watershed Society will discuss the longterm effects of logging on watersheds. Juno award winner, songwriter and performer Tony Quarrington will lead the singing.

On Thursday, August 7 at 7 pm Corky Evans, the third speaker of the Langham Cafe “Inspired Ideas Speaker Series” and former MLA, local farmer, activist, and storyteller, will take to the podium and deliver a talk on what Evans describes as, “food and farming and stuff like that.” Corky Evans is currently a farmer, care-taking the land, growing local food for many folks in the West Kootenay region. Following his retirement from the provincial legislature in 2009 he continues to be busy and committed to community, growing organic garlic, squash, potatoes and home-raised turkeys. Corky has lived a mosaic life. As a Vietnam war-resister he came to Canada from California in 1969 and has worked many different jobs from longshoreman, highways’ surveyor, tree planter, to running logging operations in the Slocan Valley, before becoming an MLA in 1991. He is known for many things, but two important ones include the development of the Slocan Valley Forest Management Project and his dynamic storytelling. The Forest Management Project aims to control logging and to protect watersheds in the valley. His storytelling engages all aspects of land activism and social commentary.

Sean Holman, founding editor of the pioneering online investigative political news service Public Eye, called Corky Evans a maverick legislator. From his retirement speech, Corky encouraged his colleagues to “refuse to say words that are not your own. You are not an actor; an election is not a screen test.

You wouldn’t let anybody else put you in a box, so don’t do it to yourself.” Corky Evans lives by his words. The Langham invites the public to his talk, Out of the Box, one that is sure to be engaging, interesting and entertaining!

The speaker series is a part of the Langham Cultural Society’s 40th Anniversary celebrations, celebrating local folks who have something interesting to say. Upcoming talks include a panel discussion on sustainability in the arts in rural communities on Thursday, September 25, and Day of the Dead in Mexico on Thursday, October 30. The last talk of the series will take place on Thursday, November 27 with a presentation by John Pollack (Institute of Nautical Archaeology, and the Royal Geographic Society) Pennywise

Attila Vural, currently lives in Zurich, Switzerland.

His music takes the listener on a journey with eyes and hearts wide open. Inspired by a touch of Latin American rhythm, tonalities from good old Jazz, and sober melodies close to straightforward Pop. Furthermore, Vural’s dramatic percussive mode of guitar playing puts his unique signature on his compositions. Creating A Mindstorm This Summer Kids with a love of science have the opportunity to take part in Lego Mindstorm Robotics workshops this summer at two locations in the West Kootenay.

Anne Lavergne has been teaching computing science and software development at institutions in the Lower Mainland for more than a decade. Prior to teaching she was employed as a software developer and IT manager overseas. Recently arriving to live in the Kootenays, Lavergne is taking her love of science, technology and problem solving to the younger generation with camps in Kaslo and Nakusp.

In the workshops, young people aged 12 to 18 will construct a standard robot using the Lego Mindstorms Robots kit. Participants will then explore how to program the robot using the Lego Mindstorms programming environment. At the end of the workshop, the students will have gained skills in problem solving and software programming.

Lavergne will take the workshop to the Selkirk College Learning Centre in Kaslo August 5 to 8, between 1 pm and 3:30 pm. And then to the Selkirk College Learning Centre in Nakusp between August 11 and 13 from 1 pm to 4 pm.

The cost of the workshops is $99 for the Kaslo session and $119 for the Nakusp session.
