The BC provincial park campgrounds of the West Kootenay have tons to offer any camping enthusiast – gorgeous settings, clean and well maintained campsites, and a variety of “all-natural� activities await you.

Some of the finest provincial parks in BC are right here: Kokanee Creek near Nelson, Syringa near Castlegar, and Champion Lakes near Fruitvale.

Each park has its own unique features. Kokanee Creek has a Visitor Centre with a variety of interpretive programs, as well as a redfish spawning channel. Champion Lakes features three warm lakes, wonderful for swimming or non-motorized boating. Syringa has opportunities for waterskiing and even windsurfing. Pass Creek Regional Park has a kitchen and cabanas to rent for family or group functions.

CHAMPION LAKES PROVINCIAL PARK Welcome Visitors & Campers!

Champion Lakes Provincial Park takes its name from the lakes and creek by that name. The focal point of this park is a chain of three small lakes that lie at an elevation of about 1,000 metres. Situated approximately 20 km northeast of the city of Trail, the lakes are encompassed by the 1,408 hectare Champion Lakes Provincial Park.

These picturesque lakes form the headwaters of Landis Creek, which in turn flows into Champion Creek and thence into the Columbia River. Both the creek and the lakes were named for James W. Champion, an early settler and orchardist in the area.

Champion Lakes Provincial Park and the local area offer a wide variety of activities to its visitors including fishing, mountain biking and swimming, which makes this an ideal destination for family fun.

INFORMATION

The campground has 95 campsites with flush toilets, water and firewood available for sale from the Park Operators.

Check-out time is 11:00 am. If you are re-registering, please do so before then. Visitors are requested to please respect other campers and to refrain from late parties, excessive noise and loud music. Only registered campers are allowed in the campground after 10:00 pm. Camping fee is $21.00 per party, additional vehicles $10.50. Firewood is available for sale from the Park Manager.

RESERVATIONS for a campsite may be made by calling DISCOVER CAMPING at 1-800-689-9025 or www.discovercamping.ca Services are provided by Park Facility Operator. For information on the park and the surrounding area, visit the information shelter near the entrance or talk to the park staff.

Sani-station is located near the campground entrance. Sani-station fee is $5.00 Picnic tables are located on the south side of the third Champion Lake near the park entrance.

An Adventure playground is located adjacent to the campers’ beach at the west end of the third lake.

Launching sites for canoes, kayaks and cartop boats are located across from the picnic area on the third lake and near the westerly end of the second lake. POWER BOATS ARE PROHIBITED. There are 2 beaches: the campers’ beach next to the playground and the day-use beach which has a swim float.

NO LIFEGUARDS ON DUTY. CAUTION: THERE IS A SHARP DROP-OFF Nine kilometres of unmaintained trails lie within the park area.

NOTE: TRAILS ARE CLOSED TO MOUNTAIN BIKES. Fishing. Rainbow trout have been stocked in the lakes. Angling for these fish can be rewarding for even the youngest members of the family. A valid BC Fishing Licence is required.

ALL PETS MUST BE KEPT ON A LEASH WHILE IN THE PARK. PETS ARE NOT PERMITTED IN THE DAY USE AND BEACH AREAS. In the winter the Fruitvale Cross-Country Ski Club maintains ski trails in the campground and along forestry roads in the area.

Welcome to Kokanee Creek Provincial Park, one of the most popular camping destinations in British Columbia! Located on Hwy 3A 19 km east of Nelson, this expansive Park offers 171 campsites, including 13 sites with electrical hook-up, plus showers, sanistation, flush toilets, group-use areas and boat launch.

Kokanee Creek Park is a great destination for your summer vacation. There is always lots to do, with 1500 metres of incredible sandy beach at your doorstep. The Kokanee Creek delta provides many opportunities to canoe and enjoy the abundant birdlife of the park. The delta is home to many species of plants and animals that rely on the park for their survival. Enjoy them and treat them with care. Numerous habitats in the park support a variety of mammals, such as coyotes, beaver and deer, as well as a wide variety of bird species. And in the fall the man-made spawning channels on the creek provide the amazing spectacle of thousands of Kokanee salmon (or redfish) battling their way upstream to spawn.

There are also many hiking and walking trails within the park. For your own safety and the preservation of the park, obey posted signs and keep to designated trails.

In addition, Kokanee Glacier Park is only 16 km away and contains over 100 km of beginner to advanced hiking trails in spectacular alpine terrain.

As well, two archaeological sites have been identified in the park, indicating seasonal campsite use by the native Kootenay people. Evidence of bygone European settlement include remains of old homesteads and an early estate. Nearby are mining ghost towns and village museums showing the Kootenay area history.

Check the West Kootenay Visitor Centre at the park for summer programming.

SEWAGE AND GREY WATER may not be discharged into any water course or on land. Discharge must be made at the sani-station (see map) for a $5.00 fee. Small amounts of grey water may be discharged at the grey water pits located near toilet building.

TREES Small trees and shrubs are easily damaged: do not use them for wiener sticks or tarp/clothesline supports.

PARK REGULATIONS can be enforced through fines of up to $100 for each infraction and/or immediate eviction from the park.

LENGTH OF STAY is limited to a total of 14 days per year.

CHECK OUT TIME is 11:00 am. Re-registration time is 10:00 am. Check in time for reservations is 1:00 pm.

CAMPING FEES are $30.00 per day per party; $35.00 with electrical hook-up. They are based on the number of people and vehicles occupying a campsite.

A camping party consists of • One to four persons 16 years of age or older • A maximum of eight persons including children (15 years of age and younger) VEHICLES PER CAMPING PARTY: • One vehicle and trailer (including towed vehicle). Either one (but not both) may be an RV • A second vehicle (non-RV) may be allowed on site for an additional nightly charge of 1/2 the campsite fee to a maximum $12 • Note: A towed vehicle is not considered a second vehicle • Each member of a party may have one motorcycle i.e. four people with two motorcycles towing bike trailers, is one camping fee • Campsite Maximum: One camping party per site, unless otherwise authorized TENTS AND EQUIPMENT must remain on the gravel portion of your campsite.

ACT IN WAYS THAT INCREASE YOUR SAFETY Prevent bear problems and “problem bears” by acting responsibly during your visit. Never feed or approach a bear. Stay alert. Be a responsible camper and hiker in handling all food and garbage. Heed all posted warnings – they indicate that bears are known to be active in the area. Report all sightings and encounters to park staff.

TAKE THESE PRECAUTIONS IN DEVELOPED CAMPGROUNDS: Reduce or eliminate the odours that attract bears • Store food/garbage in air-tight containers in the storage provided or in your car trunk.

Otherwise, suspend at least 4 metres off the ground and well away from any tree trunk • Avoid fish smells – they strongly attract bears. Use fish cleaning stations or seal fish parts in air-tight containers or throw into deep water • Cook and eat well away from your tent.

Welcome Visitors and Campers!

Syringa Provincial Park encompasses 4417 hectares near the southeastern end of the Lower Arrow Lake Reservoir. The lake is actually a part of the Columbia River that was widened and deepened with the construction of the Hugh Keenleyside Dam a short distance downstream from the park.

Situated on a well-drained gravel bench, the park nestles tightly against the southwestern slopes of the Norns Range of the Columbia Mountains.

Across the lake from the parkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s broad sand and gravel beach rises the Christina Range of the Monashee Mountains.

Visible on the flank of the mountains is the Rails Trail which follows the old Canadian Pacific Railway right-of-way that clings precipitously to the almost sheer cliffs as it wends its way upward and westward to Christina Lake.

The park was named for Syringa Creek which flows into the Lower Arrow Lake near the parkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s southern boundary. The â&#x20AC;&#x153;Syringa,â&#x20AC;? or mock orange, is a shrub indigenous to the area. It blooms in early spring, showing clusters of white flowers with bright yellow stamens. The moderately dry and warm climate of this part of the West Kootenay is conducive to the growth of plants and trees like bunchgrass and

Ponderosa pine which are not normally found in the region.

Syringa Park campground features 61 sites including 3 double sites, 2 picnic areas, an adventure playground for the kids, boat launch ramps, warm swimming beaches, group use camping area, and a network of walking trails.

Deer frequent the park mostly in the spring, and transplanted elk and sheep are also commonly seen close by.

Much more in evidence are Columbian ground squirrels and other members of the squirrel family. Birds as varied as rufous hummingbirds, pine siskins, chickadees and ravens are frequently seen.

Bears are fairly common in the park. They are wild animals and can be dangerous. Never approach or feed them. Your food should be stored in your locked car or in odour-proof containers. If you make sure your campsite is clean and donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t leave food lying around, bears and other animals and insects will be more apt Delivery to leave you alone.

ing for rainbow trout, Dolly Varden and kokanee. You will need a British Columbia angling licence if you plan on fishing.

Remember to practise safe swimming procedures: donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t swim alone; watch your children whenever they are near or in the water; non-swimmers should not use inflatable swimming aids lest they get a false sense of security.

SYRINGA PROVINCIAL PARK SYRINGA PARK FACILITIES AND ACTIVITIES THE CAMPGROUND features 61 sites including 3 double sites. Check-out time is 11:00 am. If you occupy your site after 11:00 am park staff will assume you are renewing your Park Use Permit. Please see Camping Fees/Method of Payment below for details.

If you are re-registering, please do so before then. Quiet hours are from 10:00 pm to 7:00 am and are strictly enforced. For the comfort and security of our park visitors our Park Main Gate is closed nightly between 10:00 pm and 7:00 am. Emergency access can be arranged with the Park Host (site#56) or our staff (Park Service Yard on map insert).

CAMPING FEES/METHOD OF PAYMENT Camping fees are $21 per night along with a second vehicle fee of $10.50 and apply from May 3 to September 30.

Discounts are available for Seniors who are residents of BC and are available from May 3 to June 14 and the day after Labour Day to September 30.

GATEHOUSE The gatehouse is not staffed on specific hours. Please contact Park staff roving throughout the park or ask the Park Host (campsite #56) for assistance in contacting a Park staff person. A Visitor Attendant will visit your site for the collection of camping fees and sale of firewood. You also have the option to make your camping fee payment by a selfregistration envelope (available at the Gatehouse or sani-station) and deposit payment through the slot in the door at the Gatehouse.

RESERVATIONS for a campsite and the Group Use Area can be made by contacting Discover Camping, either by calling 1-800689-9025 or online at www.discovercamping. ca. Make your selection online from campsite photos and descriptions provided.

GENERATOR HOURS 9:00-11:00 am and 6:00-8:00 pm.

PARKING is permitted only in designated lots and on the gravel portion of campsites. Parking is not permitted on roadsides. Campground Park Visitors are welcome to park second vehicles in established parking areas in the Campground, Day Use or Boat Launch areas.

Second Vehicle fees apply in those locations within the Park. The Park Facility Operator is not responsible for vandalism or theft of vehicles parked within the provincial park.

DISABLED CAMPERS Campsite #13 and the adjacent pit toilet is designated for disabled accessibility.

A SANI-STATION is located near the campground entrance. Fee for sani-dumping is $5 or purchase a token from our staff or Park Host.

PAY PHONE is located at the washroom facilities on the North Campground loop.

PARK DAY USE AREA is located north of the campground along the lake. A washroom/change house and picnic tables are available for park visitors’ use. Closure 10:00 pm nightly.

GROUP USE AREA Family reunions, Girl Guides and Scouting groups, or just a group of friends gathering for the weekend. Try our new and improved Group Use Area with capacity for 60 people. Individually gravelled sites, water, pit toilets, group fire pit and all the privacy your group would want. Advanced bookings required.

GROUP USE CAMPING The Group Use Campground is located northwest of the Day Use area along the shores of Lower Arrow Lake. The Group Use Campground has 12 sites (3 double sites and 6 single sites), common fire pit, picnic tables, pit toilets, garbage receptacles and drinking water post. THE ADVENTURE PLAYGROUND is located in the campground area near the campers’ beach.

THE BOAT LAUNCH RAMP is located at the south end of the park. Closure 10:00 pm nightly.

SWIMMING BEACHES There are swimming beaches adjacent to the campground and Day Use Area. NO LIFEGUARDS ON DUTY. FISHING Lower Arrow Lake can provide excellent fishing for Rainbow trout, Dolly Varden or Kokanee salmon. NOTE: A valid BC Fishing Licence is required.

YELLOW PINE NATURE TRAIL is approximately 4 km long and takes 45 minutes to an hour to walk. The trail climbs the hillside behind the park and is fairly steep. Rest and enjoy the view from the bench at the summit.

TRAILS – An additional 1.4 km of trails link the Park Day Use Area with the campground.

PETS PETS ARE NOT PERMITTED IN THE DAY USE, ADVENTURE PLAYGROUND, AND BEACH AREAS. A dog off-leash area is indicated by sign on the beach front between the Campground and Boat Launch Area as well as a portion of the Day Use beach north of the campground.

PICNICS A campsite may be used for a family picnic, however a camping fee of $21 will apply. Alternatively, a firepit and picnic tables are available at the Day Use area for this purpose at no charge. Ask our staff or Park Host about purchasing firewood.

FIREWOOD Wood is available at $7 per bundle. Firewood may be purchased from the Park Host or our staff. It is a violation of the Park Act Regulations to use vegetation from a provincial park, dead or alive, to start or maintain a fire.
