JULIE’S JAUNTS Whilst working at the Tourist Information Centre I often find myself looking at one leaflet in particular, probably because as I stand at the desk, it is positioned at eye level straight in front of me. So I decided the time had come to take it home and investigate its content a little further and this month’s article is all about Angels & Pinnacles. Whether you are religious or not, there is no denying that many Churches have wonderful architecture and in Suffolk we are knee deep in fabulous Churches. From stunning stained glass windows, to elegantly embroidered prayer cushions, medieval wall paintings and graffiti, interesting churchyards with their wildlife havens, there is so much to enjoy in these historic and much loved buildings. Angels and Pinnacles takes you on a tour of Suffolk to visit twenty four churches, each an architectural masterpiece with a story to tell. As it was a glorious sunny day I decided to start my tour at the coast and I set off bright and early to explore three. The 90 minute drive took me along the A1120 tourist route, which was most pleasant, passing through pretty villages and past a windmill. I arrived at St Andrews, Walberswick, to be greeted by the picturesque ruins of a much larger 15th century wool church in the grounds. Inside St Andrews there is medieval glass, candlesticks made of beach driftwood and helpfully, a public toilet! Just a few miles down the road is Holy Trinity Church at Blythburgh, with its great coloured angels with outstretched wings in the nave roof. The beautifully carved bench ends portray the seven deadly sins. After a spot of lunch down at Southwold harbour, with views back over to Walberswick, my final visit was to St Edmunds in Southwold. Just a stone’s throw from the Adnams shop, this church has traditional East Anglian flint flush work, just like Lavenham & Long Melford’s churches. Inside, known as the Jack of the Clock, there is an armour-clad figure that strikes a bell with his sword on the hour as well as a remarkable painted medieval screen. The map in the leaflet has grouped the churches into six areas, so on each outing you can easily visit four churches and many have nearby walking and cycling trails. There are another twenty one left for me to visit and the nearest cluster to Sudbury is Clare, Cavendish, Kedington and Cowlinge, so I hope to see you at one of those with your leaflet in hand!

Pick up your Angels and Pinnacles leaflet at Sudbury TIC or visit the website – angelsandpinnacles.org.uk for helpful maps and more information.
