As our university environment transitions, I want to highlight how Clarion students achieve, endure and form lasting connections with their school.
In the time since I joined the Foundation Board, there have been many occasions of serendipitous encounters with Clarion graduates and reminders of my university. I’ll share a couple.
During a trip to Italy, my husband Chris and I were walking down a street in Milan. In one of the storefronts were two mannequins sporting Clarion University jackets. I took a picture, and as I did so, the proprietor came out and shooed me away, wary that I might be stealing his design.
Another time, Chris and I were walking our dogs in our Ben Avon neighborhood. Another walker – when we asked why he was wearing a Clarion T-shirt – told us his son had graduated from Clarion. He told us about the time he was vacationing in the Caribbean and was on a fairly deserted beach when a “big guy” walking hand-in-hand with a little girl came running after him. That big guy was Kurt Angle '92, who saw the Clarion shirt and wanted to let him know his affiliation with our school.
Now, as the first class that will graduate from PennWest Clarion has been welcomed to campus, I feel certain that this sort of connectivity will continue as we make this transition. Whether it is Clarion State College, Clarion University or PennWest Clarion, I know that students will develop and nurture a network that is worldwide. Regardless of where we go, Clarion will always be with us.
At the Foundation, our goal since its founding in 1969 has been and will continue to be assuring that Clarion students will be supported in achieving their educational and life goals through the generosity of you, our donors. Thank you, as always, for making the difference in so many lives. And if you have similar Clarion stories to share, I’d love to hear them.
Sincerely,

Fans packed into Tippin Gymnasium Jan. 30, 2022. Alumni from eras spanning more than 50 years gathered from around the country, and welI-wishes poured in from the world over.
Prior to the scheduled wrestling match against Kent State, the athletics department formally unveiled the Robert G. Bubb Wrestling Facility, named for longtime Golden Eagles head wrestling coach Bob Bubb.
A video presentation enumerated Bubb’s many accomplishments as the Golden Eagles head coach. In 26 years at the helm, Bubb turned a small college in Pennsylvania into a hub of the college wrestling world. Clarion boasted seven Division I national champions and 27 Division I All-Americans in that time. As a team, the Golden Eagles finished the NCAA Division I Championships in the top 10 four times and in the top 15 eight times in his tenure, including a fourth-place finish in 1973. The 1986 Division I Coach of the Year, Bubb was one of only four coaches in Division I history to have recorded more than 300 career dual wins when he retired in 1992.
Bubb showed his gratitude for the honor while also crediting seemingly everyone except himself.
“Those of you here today know that Clarion’s wrestling success from '66 to '92 lies not with one man,” Bubb said. “We were a program, and a whole. But in making that whole, there were so many pieces that ultimately made that whole.”
Bubb quoted from Theodore Roosevelt’s “Citizenship in a Republic” speech, specifically the “Man in the Arena” section. These words hung in the Tippin wrestling room during Bubb’s tenure as coach and after:
“It is not the critic who counts ... the credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred with sweat and dust and blood: who strives valiantly ... and spends himself in a worthy cause.”
Flanked by former teammates and coaches, family and friends, the Kentucky Wildcats’ head men’s basketball coach and 1982 Clarion graduate was honored for the many contributions he and his wife Ellen have made to the university. The playing surface in Tippin Gymnasium was officially renamed the John V. Calipari Court, with the words “Coach Cal Court” emblazoned on the hardwood.
The curriculum vitae for Calipari is familiar even to casual fans of college athletics. Simply put, he is one of the most successful men’s basketball coaches of the last three decades. A 29-year veteran of college basketball coaching, Calipari was a 2015 inductee into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. He has guided six teams to the Final Four, led one to a national championship, and helped 54 players earn selection in the NBA Draft during his college coaching career. From UMass to Memphis and ultimately Kentucky, Calipari has been among the very best college coaches in the game for the last three decades.
The roots of Calipari’s story stretch back to western Pennsylvania, where he was a star high school basketball player at Moon High School under another Clarion graduate, Bill Sacco ’66. Calipari started his college playing career at UNC Wilmington before transferring to Clarion in 1981, helping the Golden Eagles reach their first NCAA Division II Tournament in program history that year. He was a key member of Clarion’s 1981-82 team that started the season 7-0 and ranked third in Division II at one point.
“I’ve had a lot of people help me,” Calipari said. “Whether it be my coaches, my teammates or mentors in the profession, I had help. I was carried to that position.”
His hope is that when people ask how he became successful that they’re told, “He started his path (at Clarion). He built his foundation here. He was able to dream big here.”
When Clarion students moved out of campus housing during the pandemic, they were invited to donate unwanted, unopened nonperishable food items, hygiene products and household/cleaning products to the university’s Resource Room.
Students responded generously, donating hundreds of items. The Resource Room provides necessities such as food, deodorant, soap, school supplies, toilet paper and cold weather accessories to students upon request.
“We were blown away by the generosity of our students,”
said Meredith Karg, student support assistant.
The fully stocked Resource Room is open and is now named PennWest Pantry for the benefit of students living in campus housing or in the Clarion area. Students can order supplies by filling out the form at clarion.edu/hungry.
There are two ways you can help keep the PennWest Pantry stocked. Check out the Amazon Wishlist https://amzn.to/3Jh9Hop or make a monetary donation at clarion.edu/supportstudents.

I am a biology major of the pre-physician’s assistant track. I aim to specialize in emergency or pediatrics.
I would like to get a position near my hometown so I can give back to the community that has done so much for me. This scholarship will help me out tremendously.
I have five siblings and two cousins who live with me; four of us are in college, so this fund will help me out extensively with the expenses of my education. It is an honor to receive these funds.

I am writing to express my sincere gratitude for making the Dr. Henry “Hank” Fueg Scholarship possible. I am a senior communications major and intend to apply to graduate school as soon as I am able. I hope to obtain a doctorate degree in the future and would ultimately love to teach communications, especially radio broadcasting and social media. The financial assistance you provided will be of great help to me in paying my educational expenses, and it will allow me to concentrate more of my time on studying. Your generosity has inspired me to help others and give back to the community. I hope one day I will be able to help students achieve their goals, just as you have helped me.

Words cannot describe my sheer appreciation for your generous contributions to my education. Your contributions have relieved the financial burden of another year of schooling and have given me a boost of awe for human kindness. Led by a single mother, my family is of low socioeconomic status with a FAFSA family contribution of $0.
Receiving this funding breaks down financial barriers for me. Our house is in an underserved, high-crime area of Pittsburgh, and many family members have experienced mental illness and trauma.

Throughout our history, Clarion has had many names. Beginning in 1867 as Carrier Seminary of Western Pennsylvania, Clarion has evolved to meet changing times and workforce needs, becoming Clarion State Normal School, Clarion State Teachers College, Clarion State College, Clarion University, and now, PennWest Clarion.
While we embrace and support the integration that formed PennWest, we remain Clarion University Foundation, Inc., and we remain committed to our Clarion campus, its students and alumni, and the intent of our faithful donors.
Your giving has not only promoted academic success, but it has also provided life-sustaining support. Because of your generosity, last year our Foundation provided over $1.3 million in scholarship support to 861 Clarion students. In addition to scholarships – and since its inception more than two years ago during the pandemic – our Student Emergency Fund has raised over $91,000 and has expended over $74,000 in direct support to meet the food, rent and other needs of hundreds of students during extenuating life events. Thank you!
Although this has been a challenging year for the economy and markets, our long-standing investment and spending policies provide a predictable stream of funding to programs and scholarships supported by the endowment. Over the long term, this strategy will allow the endowment to continue to grow.
With focus on the future, and our Clarion, may we continue to fly high!
Sincerely grateful,
Clarion University Foundation, Inc.

The Office of Alumni Engagement has launched Golden Eagle Gateway, a new platform aimed at connecting alumni with each other, with faculty and staff, and with students.
The overall purpose of the Graduway-based platform is networking, according to Ann Thompson, director of alumni engagement. The Golden Eagle Gateway had a soft launch in spring 2020, and since then, membership has grown to more than 390.
“Alumni can use Golden Eagle Gateway for any kind of networking, with the knowledge that other users are members of the Clarion community,” Thompson said. “You can sign up in less than two minutes by registering with your LinkedIn or Facebook profile. Simply go to clariongateway.com to register.”
Golden Eagle Gateway brings the Clarion community together through:
• A running feed of alumni updates, interesting content, photos and conversations.
• A full opt-in directory of alumni and students, allowing members to connect with the Clarion community, all over the world.
• A mentorship program, giving members the opportunity to be mentored by others or offer mentorship to fellow alumni/students.
• A job board with current opportunities, posted by alumni, students and strategic partners.
• Group conversations allowing members to engage at a more granular level with those with the same class, interests, careers, industries and locations.
• Events posted by alumni, students and Clarion, inviting members to upcoming events, encouraging pop-up engagement, coffee meetings around the world, webinars hosed by subject matter experts within our networks, and other organic engagement opportunities created for and by members.
