“Urban Dystopia, Industrial Utopia: where city and industry co-live’, is an escape journey to the seaside in the heart of London. The proposal consists of several structures which together form a new hybrid vertical village in Cedar Way Industrial Estate. Each structure houses a different activity related to the fishing industry present on site and the idea is the one of being able to add structures when needed thanks to an affordable and easy-to-build modular ‘kit of parts’. Specific and targeted interventions on site could transform and save the future of industrial estates giving them a new life, using Urban Acupuncture, a socio-environmental theory which uses small-scale interventions to transform a larger urban context. The use of this building philosophy makes the most of unused or poorly used existing pockets of land on site, to bring valuable social assets to the area thus enhancing the relationship between industry and the city.

‘Hive’

‘Hive’ is a SPA and aromatherapy centre and workshop space for natural candles production and remedies. The proposal comprises of therapy and activity rooms immersed into green spaces that deliver a calming atmosphere through the re-connection with nature. All activities in the facility are carried out through the use of natural beeswax candles made from beeswax collected from local producers of honey. All basic ingredients of production are grown on site or collected locally. The building is thought to be an oasis for the ‘stressed city dweller’, and oasis of health and wellbeing. Connection with nature and natural aromas are key to the functioning of the centre. The Hive includes three gardens and a public greenhouse where the user can be fully immersed into nature and take advantage from the fragrance and benefits of chamomile, mint and lavender. The structure of the building itself aims to establish a connection between space, user and experience. The use of wood for structure and cladding enhances the earthy and natural feel and provides a comforting and soothing environment. Rooms are either gardens themselves or are surrounded by courtyards that ‘introduce’ the user to nature before carrying out activities such as yoga or private therapy.

‘Hive’: Shower pods and courtyard introductory spaces

The proposal can be considered as a clean green lung for Kings Cross. With the introduction of such a large amount of plants, there would be major benefits in terms of quality of the air. Research has shown that greenery sensibly lowers the amount of polluted air that gets into a building, acting as a filter and absorbing the harmful particles dissolved in the air of London. Courtyards and indoors gardens enhance this aspect delivering a very clean environment suitable for treatments and therapies. The space includes of three main gardens: the mint garden, energising and rinvigorating, the chamomile garden, connected to the world of dreams and sleep, and the lavender garden, a stress relief space, calming and peaceful.
