Match reports: Opponent: Chadderton Vipers Date: 5th Sept 2015 Venue: Home Result: 5-1 Match report: A new season. A new sponsor – the very excellent O’Reilly Builders. Leigh is possibly the best (and most generous) builder in the western hemisphere. Now go and recommend him to all your friends (call him on 07779 998331) – is that enough shameless plugging? Our team now beefed up with the addition of Mason Hines. The boys excited and benefitting from some tough friendlies over the summer. The same old football clichés from the ageing Manager in the match report! So off we go! Chadderton looked up for it and their Manager had some interesting football clichés of his own. Apparently their game plan was to ‘hassle’ us and ‘clear the danger area’. Our plan was to play football. And we did. Fabulously. Zac ran riot in the first half; Arrun was superb in the tackle and passed beautifully. Adam was everywhere. Devon dribbled and passed perfectly. Mason (on his ‘official’ debut) played like he had been the team for a year. George in goal for the first half had one save to make. He saved it. Pennine dominated against a very good team. Our first goal was provided by Zac, he fed Devon whom finished with aplomb. This was quickly followed by a good save from George who to that point had nothing to do except practice his dance moves in goal. Unfortunately the very iffy referee gave Chadderton a penalty and despite G getting his hands to it we went into half time 1-1. Devon took up goalkeeping gloves in the 2 nd half. We started brilliantly. George fed Zac and he finished beautifully with his superb left foot We now had the upper hand. The boys were passing superbly. Zac slipped a pass to George on the left, he turned their fullback and rifled it in. 3-1 and we were flying. Mason, shrugged off a couple of challenges, passed to Adam and he clinically made it 4-1. Chadderton pressed hard (hassling and clearing the many danger areas) but to no avail. In the meantime we had hit the post 4 times (Zac, George (x2) and Adam) and were now clearly on top. Last goal was a peach. An in swinging corner from Adam was met by the shortest boy on the pitch, Zac, with his head! 5-1. Game over. Man of the match. To be honest, all of them. We had to pick a winner. Adam. Good work!

Opponent: Radcliffe Juniors Galaxy Date: 12th Sept 2015 Venue: Away Result: 7-9 Match report: A game of two halves. End to end stuff. No one likes to play in Radcliffe on a cold rainy Saturday morning. We set our stall out to attack from the off. The pitch was a leveller. At the end of the day it was the right result etc etc Every well-worn football cliché applied to this game (and there’s plenty more to come)! With Zac in goal , Mason and Adam supported Devon up front for the first ten minutes with Arrun taking up defensive duties we were confident (despite the bumpy pitch, late kick off and horrible weather). And after 30 seconds we were 1-0 down. Time to respond. And what a response! Adam and Mason rolled up their sleeves, tackled like demons and kept finding Devon with some wonderful passes. Devon, playing the best football he’s ever played scored two excellent goals. Mason piled in with a superb 3rd, direct from a free kick (after he was tackled ‘late’). The 2nd quarter continued in the same vein with George pinging balls into the box from the left and Adam, running like Usain Bolt on the right we quickly went 4-1 up with Devon getting his hat-trick! But it was not all one way traffic. Radcliffe are a good team and it was down to three excellent saves from Zac and resolute tackling from Arrun that ensured the score-line was skewed in Pennines favour. A 2nd goal for Adam (great left foot) after a neat passing move involving George and Devon meant we went into half time 5-1 up! The second half saw Adam in goal and Zac playing out left with George dropping into defence. Perhaps the scoreline led to some complacency as we started to give the ball away easily in Radcliffes half. Radcliffe, clearly not happy with the way the match was going raced out of the blocks, making the most of our inability to ‘hold the ball up’ and started to shoot from distance. We kept attacking but that just meant George was defending 1 on 4 and before we knew it the score was 4-5. Mason came on and picked up a clearance from George, exchanged passes with Zac and made it 6. But Radcliffe quickly grabbed another. It was a proper tussle between 2 excellent teams. However we kept plugging away, George and Adam stopped them getting their noses in front and Arrun, Devon, Mason and Zac between them started passing and shooting in the manner of the first half. Zac really started to show his skills and before we knew it he’d bagged a hat-trick himself! Mason scored a 9th and the boys played out the second half reasonably comfortably. A tough match, and although we now know we have the ability for the whole team to score we need to work on concentration to ensure we don’t let leads slip. Nonetheless, the boys played superbly overall. Man of the match? Tough one; two hat-tricks (!) but stand out for strong running, tough tackling, great free-kick and another tap-in goal – Mason Hines. Well done new fella.

Opponent: Milnrow Date: 19th Sept 2015 Venue: Home Result: 1-6 Match report: Every team has a ‘bogey team’. Milnrow had beaten us twice last season. They have good players, quick, strong and skilful. And they have walls and netting roofs.. Anyway, I’m not bitter. The sun was out and the pitch, albeit huge, at Hopwood was superb. Our passing game at last had a surface to aid not hinder it. We started brightly with Arrun in goal, George defending, Adam and Mason in midfield and Zac up front, passing the ball well and tackling feverishly. Nonetheless Milnrow also started well and without some last ditch tackles from George and vitally 3 excellent saves from Arrun we would have been behind. We soon found our rhythm and an excellent passing move involving all of the team led to Zac feeding Adam for him to round the keeper and rifle home. 1-0 and we were on our way. Or so we thought. Too often we lost the ball in their half and given the size of the pitch we struggled to keep up with their speed and ability. Credit the boys, they all dug in and despite 2 quick goals from Milnrow we were well in the game at half time. The 2nd half saw Adam in goal and Arrun replaced George at the back where he excelled in clearing the danger time after time. Unfortunately we kept giving procession away (the boys don’t seem to like 9.30am kick offs – early nights please parents!) and before we knew it Milnrow had added 4 goals. The good news is the boys kept trying to pass (Devon was superb and selfless), kept being brave (George took a flying goal bound shot clean in the face), kept tackling (Adam was tigerish), kept running (Zac kept dribbling and worrying their defence), kept shooting (Mason really has an eye for an opportunity) and kept playing positively (Arrun really was enjoying himself). So all in all, despite the result, there were plenty of positives. We now know we need to get the boys fitter to take advantage of our massive home pitch. Man of the match. Easy one. Arrun. Superb in goal, cleared so many of their attacks and kept positive throughout. Well done.
