This year, our work at Penn Hillel has centered around two powerful commitments: to uplift the enduring joy of Jewish life, and to honor our deep and unwavering connections with our heritage and world Jewry, especially with Israel. Joy, in our tradition, is not a surface-level feeling. It is a sacred discipline—an act of spiritual resilience. At a time when much of the world feels uncertain, and when our identities as Jews are being challenged in increasingly public ways, the ability to sing, dance, celebrate, question, create, and gather as a community is nothing short of revolutionary.
Across campus this year, Jewish joy was abundant. Our building overflowed with students every Shabbat, week after week, drawn not only by the aroma of delicious food (yes, the famous chicken wraps!), but by the electric sense of community. Holiday celebrations felt deeply alive. Our Greek life programming brought new and unexpected students into the fold, with high-energy, meaningful moments that blended culture, spirituality, and connection. Our new student orientation offered freshman a joyful and confident Jewish entry point into campus life, and our Senior Seminar gave those on the cusp of graduation time and space to reflect on their Jewish journeys and carry their pride forward into the world. Participation in our Jewish learning fellowships hit new highs this year. Students from across the spectrum of Jewish identity—and beyond—came to study ancient texts, debate ideas, and engage seriously with Jewish thought, values, and tradition. The hunger to learn, especially in a moment of social and ideological tension, was deeply inspiring. As one student put it, Learning with Hillel helped me feel grounded again. Like I’m part of something ancient, something wise
But our joy this year was not naïve. It was forged in tension, held alongside grief. Israel has remained at war with Hamas, and hundreds of our students remained firmly attuned to news out of Israel. We supported our students as they led with strength, clarity, and compassion. They led vigils, educated peers, and navigated difficult conversations while standing proudly in their identity, even when it wasn’t easy.
We at Hillel stood with them—providing structure, space, and support. We mourned together, processed together, and turned heartbreak into learning, advocacy, and connection.
Nowhere was this more apparent than in the Habibi Fellowship, a groundbreaking trip that brought Penn students - Jewish and non-Jewish alike - to both the United Arab Emirates and Israel. Through encounters with diplomats, faith leaders, and students from across the region, our participants explored the complexity and hope embedded in the evolving Middle East. For many, it was a life-changing experience that deepened their commitment to both Jewish peoplehood and global citizenship.
Similarly, our Spring Break trip to Portugal explored the legacy of Sephardi Jewry in Europe—its flourishing and its erasure. The trip offered students not only historical perspective, but a tangible connection to the broader story of the Jewish diaspora.
These immersive journeys—like so much of what we do—help students see that Jewish identity is not only personal, but shared. Not only spiritual, but political. Not only inherited, but chosen. We are proud to say that Penn Hillel continues to be one of the premier centers for Jewish life in the country. But we are even prouder of our students—their courage, creativity, and curiosity. In a moment when so much seems to divide, they are finding ways to unite. To learn. To lead. To love being Jewish. And none of this would be possible without you. As you know, we receive no fiscal support from Penn itself. It is your generosity, your partnership, and your belief in this sacred mission that fuels everything we do.
Thank you for walking this path with us. With hope, pride, and deep gratitude, Rabbi Gabe Greenberg

Briefly describe your Jewish background prior to coming to Penn:
From Haredi to Hasidic, Mashadi to Modern Orthodox, Reconstructionist to Reform, and Ashkenazi to Sephardic—my life has been a tour of global Jewish expression. Each stop added a layer to my Jewish identity.
I grew up in a Reform Ashkenazi family, attending synagogue preschool and staying active in Jewish life throughout public school. My family attended synagogue, hosted Shabbat dinners, and observed holidays. I participated in Sunday school and Torah study leading up to my bat mitzvah, held youth leadership roles at my synagogue, and served as N’siah (President) for my regional BBYO chapter.
What motivated you to get engaged with Penn Hillel? What were you looking to get out of your experience at that time?
I was drawn to Penn Hillel initially for its openness to all Judaism, but what truly rooted me there was the unexpected warmth of its people— especially in Falk dining hall. I didn’t anticipate how much I’d come to love not just the meals, but the entire experience including the dining and Penn Hillel staff, making the dining hall feel less like a cafeteria and more like a second home. These daily, grounding connections made Hillel not just a Jewish space, but my Jewish space—a place where spirituality and community are baked into every interaction.
As one of only four Jewish students in my high school class, I sought a deeper Jewish community at Penn. I first met Hillel students and staff at the welcome table during move-in. That initial greeting became the foundation of my Penn support system. Hillel has since provided a safe space to explore my Jewish identity and express my authentic self. A former Hillel Co-President described Hillel as a buffet of opportunities— engaging students at every stage of their journey. This has held true for me, inspiring my involvement.
What have been your most rewarding, inspiring, and/or surprising Penn Hillel experience(s) thus far and why? What were your main take-aways from these opportunities?
As a Pincus Engagement Intern I enjoyed coffee chats with an exceptionally diverse array of Jewish students that I otherwise would never have met. Performing stand-up at Hillel’s Jewish comedy night reminded me Jewish identity can be serious and silly, ancient and evolving. What binds us isn’t uniformity, but showing up, listening, and laughing together.
Hillel has been a hub for learning, connection, and reflection. Two experiences stand out: mentorship and Alternative Spring Break trips. My freshman peer mentor helped me navigate Penn. Now, as a member of the Executive Board, I oversee undergraduate mentorship programs, giving back the same support.
How do you think your experiences with Penn Hillel might influence you going forward?
Penn Hillel has instilled in me refuah shlema (holistic healing) and chesed (compassion) as daily practices. Whether it was showing up for a friend at Shabbat dinner, listening deeply in a coffee chat, or watching how the dining hall staff uplifted students with small acts of kindness, I’ve learned that healing begins with presence and empathy. These values will guide how I engage with patients, conduct research, and lead with integrity in medicine and science.
“Hillel has given me a platform to express who I am and to celebrate that same authenticity in others.”
The impact of Penn Hillel and its programming extends far beyond the physical walls of Steinhardt Hall. More than just a center for Jewish life, Penn Hillel embodies a mission of meaningful engagement and outreach to students of all Jewish backgrounds. Hillel has strengthened my commitment to community, leadership, and Jewish values, shaping how I will approach future personal and professional endeavors.
“Hillel has provided a safe space to explore my Jewish identity and express my authentic self.”
AT PENN HILLEL, THIS YEAR WAS A PROFOUND OPPORTUNITY TO FOCUS ON JEWISH JOY , CELEBRATING WHAT IT MEANS TO BE JEWISH FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL STUDENT. WE BELIEVE
IN THE POWER OF JEWISH JOY TO CREATE VIBRANT JEWISH LIFE ON CAMPUS. WE INTENTIONALLY CULTIVATED SPACES AND EXPERIENCES WHERE THIS JOY COULD FLOURISH.
Number of Jewish undergrads to have 1:1 meetings with Penn staff & student fellows: 46%
Number of Jewish students engaged: 77%
Total Undergrads (Jewish & non-Jewish) engaged: 50% of Penn students
Penn Hillel is deeply committed to ensuring that Jewish students at the University of Pennsylvania experience a Judaism that is joyful, hopeful, relevant, and meaningful.
Our commitment to fostering joy began even before classes started, with Camp Hillel, our annual kick-off event designed to welcome incoming students. Over 70 new students gathered for two and a half days to get to know each other and the Hillel staff through a variety of bonding activities, setting a foundation of friendship and belonging that would carry them through their first year. This warm welcome continued with our plentiful New Student Orientation (NSO) programming. Incoming freshmen were invited to a massive Welcome Back BBQ featuring a student DJ and our Hillel club fair showcasing the diverse opportunities available within Hillel and ensuring every student could find their niche. Our pizza party on the porch offered a more relaxed setting for mingling and creating new connections. These initial joyful experiences were crucial in helping students feel at home from day one.
Throughout the year, joy continued to be a cornerstone of our programming. From our lively and intimate weekly Shabbat dinners and extensive holiday programming, to our Spring Break trip to Portugal where students immersed themselves in Jewish history and current Jewish life across different Portuguese cities, our students found countless opportunities to revel in shared moments of Jewish belonging, each expressing their unique connection in their own ways.
We felt the warmth of camaraderie at events like our annual Hillel Formal, a silent disco where students danced and celebrated together, and at our comedy performance by Jewish comedian Max Cohen, Murray Hill Boy. This year, we also held our first annual Wellness Week, featuring tabling with Matzah ball soup kits, playing with rescue puppies, a knitting class, workout sessions, mindfulness practice, and a Wellness Shabbat across Penn, hosted by students in their campus housing with facilitated discussions about well-being.
Our Penn Hillel staff team taught a variety of Jewish learning fellowships on different topics, ranging from a Shabbat Hosting Lab designed to help students host their own Shabbat dinners more meaningfully and intentionally, to Rise & Shine: A Weekly Morning Dose of Jewish Nourishment, which provided students an opportunity to nourish themselves one morning a week with Torah, mindfulness, physical fitness opportunities, and more.
Penn Hillel remained deeply committed to Israel engagement, education, and advocacy over the past year, offering students a range of opportunities to connect with Israeli life. From fellowships to campus-wide events, we created spaces for students to explore Israel’s complexity—its innovation and joy, as well as its grief and resilience—especially in the wake of the October 7th, 2023 attacks.
A major focus was the one-year memorial of October 7th, which included a vigil with over 200 attendees, remarks from Senator John Fetterman and Chaplain Chaz Howard, name readings, a hostage photo installation, and a screening of Screams Before Silence. It was a powerful moment of remembrance and solidarity.
Beyond the anniversary, students responded quickly to ongoing tragedies. On September 1st, within hours of reports that six hostages had been murdered—including American Hersh Goldberg Polin—students swiftly planned a vigil, one of the first of its kind in the country. Penn Hillel also brought nearly 30 students to the Nova Music Festival exhibition at the Weitzman Museum to witness survivors’ testimonies firsthand.
During Israel Week, popular events included “Shuk at Hillel,” swag giveaways, a shakshuka-and-sheshbesh night co-hosted with TAMID, and a keynote with Noa Tishby, Nova survivor Noam Ben David, and former hostage Moran Stella Yanai who shared their personal stories from October 7th.
In January, 24 students participated in the Habibi Fellowship, a 10-day trip to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Jerusalem, and Tel Aviv. The mixed cohort of Jewish and non-Jewish students explored regional complexities, met with diplomats and entrepreneurs, and shared a Shabbat dinner with relatives of hostages. Back on campus, they’ve become advocates for thoughtful dialogue on the Middle East.
Penn Hillel also relaunched Birthright with 35 students and sent 15 interns to Tel Aviv through Onward Israel.
Penn Hillel had an incredibly strong year of Israel programming and remains committed to strengthening students’ connections to and nuanced understanding of Israel.
In so many ways, Penn Hillel’s programming this year truly leaned into embracing the joys of being Jewish and proud. Each event, whether a large-scale celebration or an intimate gathering, was an intentional touchpoint designed to foster genuine connections, a profound sense of shared identity, and to empower every student to embrace the richness of their Jewish journey with a full heart.
Hillel is dependent on the generosity of parents, alumni, and community friends.
We thank all of you whose contributions this past year allowed us to inspire Jewish life, and community at the University of Pennsylvania.

Penn Hillel continues to be the model for all other Hillels throughout the country. During my time at Penn, Penn Hillel was always a place of both security and strength. Now more than ever it is important that Penn Hillel continues its vital work in creating an environment on campus that allows all Jewish students to live openly as proud Jews.
MAX SCHAPIRO (C’08, W’08)
We are grateful that today’s Jewish students have Penn Hillel on campus to provide a safe and welcoming home in challenging times. We love that it is a space for students to explore what makes them unique while celebrating the things they share.

This past year for Penn Hillel was truly one for the books. While being a Jewish student this year has had its challenges, the Penn Jewish community has continued to grow, come together, and celebrate the joy of being Jewish. Whether it’s standing up to antisemitism on campus, engaging with and celebrating Jewish and Israeli culture, or building avenues for constructive dialogue with other campus groups, members of the Penn Jewish community have remained proud of their Jewish identities and emerged as incredible leaders. The success of this past year would not have been possible without the dedication and hard work of our staff and student leaders, as well as the unwavering support of our alumni, families, donors, and broader Jewish community. You make Hillel our home.
To share some of our favorite highlights from the year:
t Launched the new Hillel Faculty Mentorship Program, connecting Jewish undergraduates with Jewish Penn faculty in their academic and professional areas of interest.
t Eliminated the Falk Dining Hall surcharge so Jewish students could eat kosher food without any cost barrier.
t Reinvigorated Shabbat culture with dinner now taking place in the second-floor Penn Hillel Library, making Friday nights all the more special.
t Celebrated Israel Week with enriching events and incredible speakers, including Noa Tishby and Yermiyahu Danzig.
t Sent 84 students on Hillel-sponsored trips to Israel, the UAE, and Portugal.
t Hosted 70 Jewish incoming first years on the Hillel Pre-Orientation program, welcoming them into the community before the year started. This was the biggest group we’ve ever had!
t Attended Yallapalooza, hosted by Hillel International, where we heard Matisyahu, Noa Kirel, and Nova DJs (not to mention, we watched our very own former co-president Maya Harpaz co-host the event!).
t Gathered hundreds of people for powerful commemorative programs, including an October 7th ceremony and two Holocaust survivor speaker events.
Thank you for believing in Penn Hillel and the future of Jewish life at Penn. Penn Hillel is and always will be a safe space for Jewish students to learn, thrive, grow, and connect with our Jewish identities. We are deeply grateful for your generosity and your belief in our mission. You remind us that we are not alone and that our community is unwavering in its commitment to Jewish life. Thank you!
Yours truly,
