Penn Hillel Annual Report

It is not an exaggeration to say that this has been the most difficult year on college campuses in a generation. I have spoken with Penn faculty, leaders, administrators, and staff, and all agree that the nearest comparable moment was the societal unrest of the 1960s. And it has been particularly tough for Jewish students on campus, as they have encountered a difficult reality: that aspects of their identities— specifically around Zionism and Israel—are not fully welcomed on campus. Or to put it more bluntly—those beliefs and ideologies are actively rejected and opposed by some within the Penn community, both students and faculty alike.
As a Hillel director, rabbi, father, and most generally as a Jew living in America, I too have felt deeply the pain, sadness, anxiety, and occasionally fear during this turbulent moment in the world and in the US. I therefore experience our work on campus as a tremendous bracha—blessing and gift—in that it provides us with a tangible, concrete way to support Jewish students during this time. Never before has it been so important to show our young people why being Jewish is beautiful! Why it is joyful! Why it can and should make us so proud!
This has been a year during which we have held these two truths simultaneously: that we must show and teach the joy and beauty of our tradition and heritage, while also being proud, strong, and defending those aspects of our identity which we hold so dear.
You will read within this report about just one slice of the impact that we made in the lives of Jewish students on campus this year, with your help. We are sharing here some of the robust initiatives and programming that we supported over the past year, specifically around Israel and the conflict. Note that we also continued our incredibly varied and meaningful annual offerings, such as our Senior Seminar, Beren Greek Life Fellowship, Arts and Judaism group, Kosher Community Soup Kitchen, and First Year Leadership Board. We also completed our first year of a full-time Mental Health professional, a clinical social worker who is embedded within the Hillel building and sees students 1-on-1, for free. This program was an unmitigated success, and we are excited to continue it for the next year.
I am incredibly proud of our staff, students, and community members for their incredible leadership and resilience during this coming year. And I am so grateful to you, our supporters, for allowing us to do this holy and critical work. We are all working together to ensure that the next generation of Jewish leaders are as thoughtful, proud, strong, and vibrant as those that came before.
In friendship,
Gabe Greenberg Rabbi and Executive Director

Briefly describe your Jewish background prior to coming to Penn:
Growing up, I always felt a deep connection to Judaism. In elementary school, I loved going to Hebrew school, enjoyed attending Friday night services, and absorbed Jewish books. As I grew older, I was very involved in United Synagogue Youth (USY), taking on leadership positions every year on a local and regional level, as well as attending their Eastern Europe and Israel Summer Pilgrimage program.
I grew up very involved in my reform synagogue back home in San Diego. Jewish religion, culture, and spirituality have always been important to me, but, until coming to Penn, I was never surrounded by a large, vibrant Jewish community.
What motivated you to get engaged with Penn Hillel? What were you looking to get out of your experience at that time?
I was fresh off a gap year in Israel when I started Penn, longing to be back and missing the community that had surrounded me there. I was seeking connection to the Jewish community that would make Penn’s campus feel as safe as my gap year had. Hillel’s Pre-Orientation kicked off my Penn experience, introducing me to people who are still my closest friends.
The close knit community made up of Jews from diverse upbringings and with diverse interests and passions was something I knew I wanted to be a part of. The support that Penn Hillel has offered me to create initiatives that uplift this community even more has been very meaningful to me.
What have been your most rewarding, inspiring, and/or surprising Penn Hillel experience(s) thus far and why? What were your main take-aways from these opportunities?
After October 7th, I was devastated. So many of us were. I remember the first vigil that Hillel held at the LOVE statue, seeing everyone I knew come together. Everyone was there to greet each other with open arms and words of comfort and support. We all needed Penn Hillel then more than ever. Despite the circumstances, watching how the community came together in the subsequent weeks and months was incredible. We planned rallies, raised money, and attended meetings advocating for Jewish students on campus.
One of my most rewarding Penn Hillel experiences has been an Interfaith Shabbat I worked to plan this past semester. During a very difficult year for the Jewish community at Penn as well as the wider campus community, facilitating a space where friends and strangers could come together to eat, learn, and meet each other face to face felt incredibly important. Getting to share beautiful customs like Shabbat is a very special thing, and I hope that we can work to create more shared experiences like this in semesters to come.
How did Penn Hillel impact your experience during this unusual academic year?
Penn Hillel has made me confident in who I am as a proud Jewish young adult. I have had a place to explore and make sense of what my Judaism means to me and the opportunity to practice articulating this to others. These are lessons that will guide me going forward.
“Penn Hillel has made me confident in who I am as a proud Jewish young adult.“
The deep relationships I have formed here with friends in both more religious and more secular spaces has exposed me to so many different ways of living Jewishness. It has helped me better understand what being Jewish means and can mean to me.
“Penn Hillel has helped me better understand what being Jewish means and can mean to me.”
THIS YEAR, FOLLOWING THE EVENTS OF OCTOBER 7TH, PENN HILLEL DOUBLED DOWN ON OUR MISSION AND DEEPENED AND EXPANDED OUR OPPORTUNITIES FOR JEWISH STUDENT
It was immediately clear that students were seeking an increased level of education about the roots and causes of the conflict, and around the relationship between antisemitism and anti-Israel rhetoric. Students sought out insights and knowledge from various academics, thought-leaders, authors, etc., and we were excited to bring a world-class menu of such speakers to campus. Many students wanted to proudly lead and advocate for Israel, and as such Penn Hillel organized pro-Israel rallies, marches, speeches, a trip to the pro-Israel march in DC, and also sent individual student leaders to events across the country, as well as supporting
Penn Hillel had a robust lineup of speaker events and programs throughout the year in response to the events of October 7th. Speakers at Penn Hillel this year included: Author Dara Horn, Broadway playwright and comedian Alex Edelman, musician Matisyahu, activist Blake Flayton, author Yossi Klein HaLevi, Lord Mendelsohn of British Parliament, Nova Festival survivor Natalie Sandaji, Chefs Michael Solomonov, Steve Cook and Adeena Sussman, Zioness founder Amanda Berman, Palestinian journalist Bassem Eid, and Yad Vashem Chairman Dani Dayan, Governor Josh Shapiro, among others.
We created or supported four on-campus rallies and marches | Philadelphia-wide rally | Two buses to the March on Washington
SHARING
Song Circles: Penn Hillel held and supported song circles nearly every day for the week following October 7th. At each song circle, students shared stories of people they know in Israel that are soldiers, family and friends they were worried about, and people they have lost.
Shabbat Together: On the Friday evening that the Palestine Writes Literature Festival began on Penn’s campus, Penn Hillel hosted our largest ever Shabbat Dinner of unity that we called Shabbat Together for over 400 students. Guests included CEO of the American Jewish Committee, Ted Deutch; philanthropist Matthew Bronfman; Penn alum and fashion designer, Stuart Weitzman; and notable community members and alumni.
Thursdays Together: In response to the tragic events of October 7th, there was a strong desire amongst the student community for opportunities to be together. All fall semester, roughly ~200 students gathered together to enjoy delicious food, each other’s company, and camaraderie. There were regular attendees as well as lots of new faces each week. Each of the evenings featured a different speaker, professor, or event during or following the dinner.
Israel: Penn Hillel partnered with Birthright Israel Onward and Israel Outdoors/Tlalim to offer a previously unplanned volunteer trip. 25 participating students on the trip volunteered to pack food and clothing for displaced communities as well as assist farmers with harvesting crops. Of all the campuses that sent students on this program across the country, Penn Hillel sent the most students of any peer institutions.
Poland: 19 Penn Students traveled to Poland for an immersive educational experience that combined site visits, tours, and workshops with educational and cultural activities. They visited the great monuments of the Jewish past in Poland as well as learning about Jewish life in the present by visiting local institutions such as JCCs and Hillels. They had an opportunity to interact with their Polish peers, meet with local scholars and discuss with community leaders to ensure a fulfilling educational journey.
This year, in particular, the trip had so much meaning for the students. In a time of rising antisemitism, heightened polarization, and increasing tribalism, it is critical that we educate the next generation of Jewish leadership to ensure that the lessons of the past remain as relevant and resonant as ever.
In a typical year, Penn Hillel is laser-focused on supporting Jewish Penn students. Given the political and social challenges of this year, we added support for an additional type of programming this year. Specifically, two programs which were faculty-led and -focused:
In January, 30 Penn faculty members from seven Penn schools went to Israel on an academic mission during winter break. The goals of the trip were to build bridges with the Israeli academic community, bear witness to the impact of the Hamas attacks through interaction with affected communities, hear from medical and psychological professionals treating survivors, and connect with Penn alumni in Israel. They met with faculty of Israeli Universities, President Herzog, and other relevant stakeholders. Penn Hillel supported both financially and logistically, and connected these faculty with our undergraduate students for a lunch-and-learn on their return. Several student leaders and faculty have developed on-going relationships stemming from this event.
While we had to hit pause on several of our Israel trips, Penn Hillel offered a variety of ways for students to visit Israel including a winter and Summer Birthright trip, Penn Perspectives, Onward Israel, Shalom Hartman Winter Seminar, and the Habibi Fellowship to the UAE and Israel.
40 Israeli undergraduates came to Penn during the summer of 2024 to take on academic internships with 40 different faculty members throughout the University ecosystem. Three Penn undergraduate fellows, supported by Penn Hillel, organized social and cultural opportunities for the Israeli students to interact and engage with American counterparts.
Hillel is dependent on the generosity of parents, alumni, and community friends.
We thank all of you whose contributions this past year allowed us to inspire Jewish life and community at the University of Pennsylvania.

We are grateful to Penn Hillel for serving as a welcoming community, and a home away from home, for Jews of all backgrounds at Penn. In particular, helping fund programs relating to Holocaust education is particularly meaningful to us, as grandchildren of the wonderful Aharon Golub, z”l, a survivor. In these challenging times, we hope this support helps students come together, embrace each other’s differences and spread kindness and compassion.

We support Penn Hillel as a welcome Jewish home and community at Penn for our kids, their friends, and all Jewish students who choose to be part of it.

If you walked into Penn Hillel during this past year, you probably have never seen it so packed and full of life. It is no secret that this year was a difficult one to be a student on college campuses; however, we could not be more proud of the way that our community has come together in strength to weather the challenges we have faced.
Due to the hard work of all of our wonderful staff, student leaders, and generous support of our donors and broader Jewish community, Jewish life has thrived at Penn and we aren’t going anywhere. Throughout this particularly difficult year, Penn Hillel has offered a wide array of programs, social events, religious opportunities and more to bring us all together and make us stronger.
We would like to thank all of you who have made all of this possible for our students and bring light to this dark time. Hillel is and will always be a space for all kinds of Jewish students supporting Jewish identity of all types, which is needed more than ever. Penn Hillel means the world to us and we know it does to you too, and please know how grateful we are for your commitment to Jewish life at Penn.
Yours Truly,
Olivia Domansky C’25 and Maya Harpaz C’25 / Penn Hillel Co-Presidents
