Wealsoareleading2missiontrips,onetoworkwiththehomelessherein Philadelphia,andtheotherwillgoservethepoorinLima,Peru.Wealso tookagroupof17seniorstotheESTEEMCapstoneConferencein Washington,D.C.

PopeFranciscallsustobea"Churchthatgoesout." This ultimatelyisrootedintheLord'sGreatCommissionto "goandmakedisciplesofallnations"(Mt28:19).Hereat Newmanwehaveheededthatcallandhaveembracedthe missionofsharingthejoyofGospelwithothers.
Weseektomakethisvisionarealitythroughourintentional outreachtomeetyoungpeoplewheretheyare,andinvitingthem intoawelcoming,life-givingcommunity.Welooktoformour studentsandyoungadultleaderstodiscoveranauthentic,lifegivingrelationshipwiththeLordJesusthatcompelsthemtowant tosharetheGoodNewstheyhavefoundwithothers.
Thethemeofour2023SpringMagazinefocusesonourvisionfor forminga"cultureofmissionarydisciples."Wehopeyouenjoyit!
Almost250studentsareactiveinour weeklysmallgroupsandevents. Thereareabout500thatgoto SundayMass,andthenwelookto getthemmoreinvolvedwithour community.
OurYoungAdult/Gradstudent ministrycontinuestogrow,as wellasourNazarethGroupfor marriedcouples.
BetweenPenn&Drexel,thereare atotalof36smallgroupBible studies.Theycatertoalltypesof interests,ageranges,&cultural backgrounds.
PopeFrancishasbroughtthisvisionofmissionary discipleshiptoourChurch,andultimatelywetakeour visionformissionhereatNewmanfromhim.Hecontinues topushustobeaChurchthatgoesoutandmeetspeople wheretheyare.Weseethisfirsthandwithcollegestudents, asyoucannolongerwaitforthemtocometoChurch.It's essentialtogooutandmeetthem,andtheninvitetheminto avibrantchurchcommunitylikeNewman!

HeclearlytookhisleadfromPopeFrancis,as havewe,andheaskedallparishesaroundthe ArchdiocesetomakeourourPastoralPriorities toaccomplishthismission.
HereatNewman,we'vebeenwalkingthispath forawhilenow,andhavetakentoheartthe assignment.WorkingwithourPastoralCouncil ofstudentsandparishioners,weareforming PastoralPrioritiesforthenextseveralyearsthat canfurtherthisvision!
Wekick-started2023bybringingtogetherallofour student,youngadult,andparishleadersforour annualLeadershipRetreatattheNewmanCenter. It'sanopportunitytoreflecttogetheronourmission, whichunitesallofthemanydifferentgroupsand ministriesthatcallSts.AJ's&Newmanhome.
Inadditiontotalks,wehavesmallgroupdiscussion, timeforprayerandfun,andaspecialcommissioning Mass,wheretheyareentrustedwiththemissionof sharingChristoncampusandinourcommunity.

SEEKisanannualCatholicconference,hostedby FOCUSmissionaries,thatbringstogethermore than15,000youngcollegestudentsforaweek filledwithgreatspeakers,spacesofprayer, fellowship,andfun.Itcanbeatransformative experienceforstudents,andwewereblessedto takeover40studentsthisyeartoSt.Louis!

ThenexttwopagestellthestoriesofourNewman AthleteMinistry,aswellasourgrowingRCIAprogram, whichhasseenanumberofProtestantslookingtojoin theCatholicChurch.
EveryThursdaynighttheathletestakeoverthefrontroom oftherectoryforMarianGroup.Scootersandbackpacks linethehallway,acoupleofguyshelpthemselvestoaglass ofmilkfromthebro’sfridge,andtherestofusmake ourselvesathomewhilewewaitforFr.Remitofinishuphis RCIAclass.Forthenexthourandahalf, wediveintothe month’stopic,reflectingdeeplyonwhoGodis. It’saspace offormation,friendship,andvulnerabilityformaleand femaleathleteswhoshareinsimilarjoysandstruggles whilelivingtheirfaithamidstthecultureofcollege athletics.
AthleteGroupisjustonepieceoftheAthleteMinistrythat hasgraduallybeentakingshapeoverthepastfewyears.It's apiecethatgetstotheheartofourvisionforservingthe athletesatPennandDrexel.Wewantathletestofeelat homeatNewman.Wewantathletestobeformedintheir identityasbelovedsonsanddaughtersoftheFatheramidst dailytemptationstofindtheirworthinwhattheydo.
Throughoutmy3yearsasaFOCUSmissionary,I’vebeen captivatedbythepowerofcommunityindrawinghearts intofriendshipwithJesus.Ihavewitnessedhowthe Newmanathletecommunityfillsandformstheirheartto lovetheirteammatesmoreradically,andtolivetheir Catholicfaithmoreboldly.
TheLordhasputafireinmyheartforlovingathletesand it’sbeenajoytowitnessmyownheartandtheheartsof manyathletestransformthroughcommunity.

ThisyearIhavehadthegreatjoyofdiscoveringand enteringtheCatholicChurchtogetherwithseveral non-Catholicfriends,includingmysister!Weeach hadourownpathfindingourwayhome.
Forme,IhadbeenonajourneyexploringCatholic theologyafterbeingunsatisfiedwithwhatIwas learningasaProtestant.Myheartwastrulytouched andtransformedwhenIrealizedthatIhavea heavenlymotherlovingmeandguidingmetowards herSon.
Iwasnervoustojoinanewcommunitymyjunior yearofcollegeandestablishanewgroupoffriends. Nevertheless,NewmanandtheParishmademefeel solovedandwelcomed;Iimmediatelyfeltathome.
TheRCIAprogramatNewmanhasbeena transformativeexperience, anditissoencouraging tocontinuemyjourneyintofullcommunionwiththe Churchnotonmyown,butwithmanypeople—new brothersandsistersinChrist.
TheRCIAprogramservesasagreatplaceforseekers oftheCatholicfaithtogetatasteofthefullnessof truththatotherministriesatNewmansupplementas well.Andweareimmediatelyencouragedtogooutas missionarydisciples,andinvitenewpeopleintofind whatweourselveshavediscovered!
IhopetoseeNewmanandtheParishcontinueto reachouttomorenon-believersandProtestantson campus.Likemeayearago,somanyothersdonot knowofCatholicismastheanswertosatisfythe hungerforJesus.IhopeRCIAcontinuestogrowin numberandserveasalightforthecampus.

Thelastfewyearswehavebeenblessedtowelcomea largenumberofpeopleintotheCatholicChurch throughourRCIAprogram.Thisyear26peoplewillbe confirmedatEaster,sixofwhomwillbebaptized,and 20ofwhomwillenterintheCatholicChurch
AlargenumberofourProtestantbrothersandsisters havefoundtheirwaytoCatholicism,bringingthe richnessoftheirspiritofprayerandevangelismtothe Newmancommunity!
IreachedouttotheNewmanCommunityasanAir Forceveteranwhowashavingtroubleadjustingto civilianlifeandwantedtostrengthenmyspirituallife. Ihadbeenawayfromthechurchbutdecidedtoreturn andreceivethesacramentofConfirmationandhoped tofindasenseofcommunity.
Iwaswelcomedwithopenarmsfromthefirstdayand foundtheNewmanCentertobeaplacewhereIalways feltcomfortableandfoundpeopleIcouldreally connectwith.Comingtothechurchcanbean intimidatingexperience,butNewmanisacommunity oflike-mindedpeoplewhoalsowanttogetinvolved withthechurch.That'swhyit'saplacewhereIfeelat home,andIalwayslookforwardtobeingthere.
Additionally,thetheologyeducationIhavereceived herewillstaywithmeforever.GrowingupIdidnot receivemuchreligiouseducationbutnowIcansayI havelearnedmoredeeplyaboutthefaithandhavea muchstrongerfoundation.
EachquarterIplanouthowIcanfitdifferentNewman Centeractivitiesintomynewschedule.
TheChristianLifeMovement(CLM)isthemovementoflay peopleaffiliatedwiththeSCVbrothers,wholivetheSodalit spiritualityandparticipateintheirapostolicprojects.Here inPhiladelphia,ithasseenarebirththispastyear,duein parttothearrivalofthe"ChristintheCity"homeless missionaryprogram(nextpage),aswellasthededicated workofMariaJoseArmas(storybelow),whohas workedwiththeSCVbrotherstogivelife
"TheChristianLifeMovement(CLM)beganatStAgatha-James&the NewmanCenterbackin2014whentheSCVbrothersarrived.This aresurgenceandIhavehadtheprivilegeofserving asalaymissionary.TherebirtharosefromadesireofsomeCLM memberstoservetheParishcommunityandtobuildbridgesacross itsdifferentministriesandsmallgroups. NowtheCLMincludes studentsfrombothPennandDrexel,localparishioners,young adults,athletes,FOCUS&"ChristintheCity"missionaries,&others.
Ourpurposeofsowingunitycomesfromastrongsenseofspiritual familywithintheCLM,asweseektoworkasan"Apostolic Community"gatheredbyGod.Welooktoencourageourmembersto giveaccordingtotheirgiftsandtalents,andweemphasizetheroleof thelaypersoninthemissionofevangelizingtheculture.Thereisa complementaritybetweenmenandwomen,clergyandlay,aswellas thespiritualandapostoliclife.
Throughthismission,weareformingacommunityofmissionary discipleswhoservetheparish,helpingmemberstointegratethefaith inalltheareasoflife.Eventsandactivitieswehaveorganizedover thepastyearincludeaWorldYouthDayPilgrimagegroupof50 people,yearlycelebrationoftheCLMandSCVanniversary,thefirst ever"CLMSummit"inColorado,weeklySaturdaymorningMass, rosary&brunch,andmonthlyformationtalks.
Oursymbol,ananchor,isourcalling—wearecalledtobeanchorsin faith,tobeimmovableintruth,towithstandstormywaters.Within theanchor,wecanalsoseethecrossofChrist,plantedonthe crescentmoon,whichsymbolizesMary.AschildrenoftheBlessed Mother,webelievethatsheistheshortestwaytoJesus.
UndertheguidanceoftheHolySpirit,wehopetoexpandtheservice oftheCLMthroughoutPhiladelphiaandbeyond,sothatbothourlay andconsecratedmemberscanrespondtoafull-timecallof evangelizingthecultureandstrengtheningtheologicalformation.We particularlyhopetoconnectthemanyCLMcommunitiesacrossthe countryandtheAmericasthroughpilgrimagesandmissiontrips."

NewmanhaspartneredwiththemonourFridaynight streetwalks,wherewevisitourhomelessfriendsonthestreets andtrytomakethemfeelthelovetheGodhasforthem.
"ChristintheCity"isthecommunityserviceministrywehaveat theNewmanCenter.Theministryinvolvesencounteringour homelessbrothersandsistershereinPhiladelphiaandbuilding friendshipswiththem,ultimatelywiththegoalofministeringto thelonelinessandisolationthatmanyofthemexperience.
SincecomingtoschoolintheFallof2021,I'veseentheministry takeoffandreachheightsthatIcouldneverhaveimagined. Moreandmorepeoplecomeeachweek,alldesiringtoshowlove tothosewhomoursocietyoftentreatsasunlovable.Students whogoonthestreetwalksalwayshaveapowerfulexperience thatmovestheirheartsintoadeepercompassionforthepoor andmarginalized.Ourstreetwalkshavealsobeenanawesome waytobringnewpeopleintoourcommunityattheNewman Center.Everywalk,Iseenewpeoplecomingtojoinusforstreet ministryafterhavingbeeninvitedbytheirfriends,andmanyof thesenewcomersendupbecomingregularsatourwalks.
StartingintheFallof2022,we'vebeenblessedtohaveagroupof missionariesfromtheofficialChristintheCityorganization joinusonourstreetwalks.I'veseentheirwitness,joy,and leadershipinspiremanyofthestudents,myselfincluded,to continuetogrowinloveforourfriendsinthestreets,andtoalso letthatloveextendtothefriendsthatwehaveatour universities.ChristintheCityhasbeensuchapowerfulvessel ofGod'sgraceinourcommunityattheNewmanCenterandI'm excitedtoseethewaysinwhichGodwillcontinuetooverflow ourheartswithHisloveandletitspilloutontoourfriendsin thestreetsandalloftheotherpeopleweencounterthroughout ourlives."

Inthewordsofsomeofouralumni,theNewman Centerisapowerhouseforfosteringvocations. Afewendupenteringreligiouslifeorthe priesthood,butthegreatmajorityarethelay vocationsofmarriageandalifededicatedto servingtheChurch.
InFebruarywetook17ofourPenn&Drexelseniors toWashington,D.C.forourannualESTEEM CapstoneConference.ESTEEMpreparesstudentsfor lifeasaCatholicaftercollege,andputsanemphasis onthevocationoflayleadershipintheChurch.
MyexperienceasaPennNewmanparenthasbeen nothinglessthanamazing!Icannotsayenoughgreat thingsaboutthepriests,brothers,andFOCUS missionariesatNewman--itisthetruegemofUPenn. WhenwefirstvisitedUPenn,weattendedMassasa familyatSt.Agatha-St.James.AfterMass,Iimmediately wentuptothepastorandintroducedSheilaasan incomingfreshman.Therestishistory!
NewmaniseveryCatholicparent’sspiritualdreamcome truefortheirkids.Collegecanbeatemptingperiodina youngperson’sspirituallife.Asparents,weinvestso muchtimeplantingandnurturingfaithseedsinour childrenatallstagesoftheirlives.Itwarmedmyheartto seethoseseedssproutinSheilaasacollegestudent.On theotherhand,whenItalktootherCatholicparents withchildrenincollege,Sheila’sexperienceisnotthe norm.SomecollegecampusesdonothaveCatholic centers.AsaChurch,weneedtolaserfocusourefforts onkeepingouryoungadultsengagedandconnectedto theChurchduringtheircollegeyearsandbeyond.
Sheila’sspiritualgrowthisevidentinheractions—as theScripturessay,“faithwithoutworksisdead.”Her devotiontodailyMass,aswellasdailyadorationand prayerhassoared.Thepriests,brothers,and missionariesareallwonderfulexamplesforPenn& Drexelstudentstofollow.Sheilahasalsoparticipated invariousNewmanactivitieslikeBiblestudies, discipleship,ChristintheCityhomelessministry,and Newmanretreats.Thesespiritualactivitieshavealso inspiredSheilatolearnmoreaboutherCatholicfaith tobetterequipherincarryingouttheChurch’smission tomakedisciplesofallnations.
TheCatholicchurchisinthebusinessofsavingsouls! ThemorestudentsweconnecttoPennNewman,the moresoulsthatwecannurturetowardsthepathof salvation.Askyourchildthenexttimeyoutalktothem: "GotNewman?"IfyourchilddoesnothaveNewman, theyneedtogetNewman,findNewman,andtreasure Newman.Itisnevertoolatetoconnectwiththe NewmanCenter.TheCenterisamusthaveingredient toanycollegesuccessplanatUPennorDrexel.

WhenIcametoNewman,IsawhowveryfewFilipino studentsattendedNewman,eventhoughmostofthem wereCatholic.Ingeneral,Newmanwasnotthatdiverse. IfeltacallingmakeFilipinostudentsfeelcomfortableat Newman.IstartedorganizingaFilipinoMasssowecould haveaspacetoworshipthesamewaythatwedointhe Philippines.After,MassIorganizedcommunity& fellowshiptime.
It'samazingtoseehowtheFilipinoministryhasgrown overtheyears!Wehaveacommitteethatiscommittedto organizingevents.Atthebeginningitwasjustme&my mom,butnowtherearesomanypeoplehelpingout!
Newmanisaveryspecialplacewheresaintsareformed.
IfwetrulyseewhatwehaveascomingfromGod, andifweseeourselvesasgoodstewardsofwhatwe have,wemustinvestinthelongtermbyinvestingin Newman.
WhenIwasastudent,Ialreadyfeltanattractionto giveofmytime,talentandtreasure.Istartedgiving asastudent.Firstthroughprayer, thensingingin thechoir,helpingtoorganizetheFilipinoministry, andgivingthelittlemoneyIhad.NowthatI’ve graduated,I’veincreasedwhatIgivebecauseGod hasgivenmemore.WithallthatGodhasgivenme, it’sappropriatetogiveallthatIhavetoHim.Thereis atimeforreceivingandatimeforgiving.
Itwasabout9yearsagowhen myfuturesuperiortoldmehe wassendingmeto Philadelphia aftermyformationinLimaPeru. ThefirstthingIdidwasgoogle “DrexelNewman”andfoundthe leadershippageofsomecrazy lookingkids.
LittledidIknowthatthesewouldbecomefastfriends. Afternineyears,Philadelphiafeelslikea2ndhome. ReflectingonmytimeatDrexelNewmanfeelssurreal. Therehavebeenmanybeautifulanddifficultmoments, andsomanychanges.Therhythmoftime,however,can onlybetrulykeptbytheincrediblepeopleand relationshipsthathavelaidthefoundationfora ministrythathasdevelopedintosomethingincredibly special.
Iamsohonoredtohavebeenabletoservethisdiverse community. Iamsogratefultoeverypersonwhohas passedthroughtheNewmanCenterdoors--especially thosewhoIhavespentcountlesshourswithlaughing, crying,andpraying.Ithank allofyouwhoareapartof theNewmanfamily;thosewhohavesetthefoundations ofNewmaninthepastandthosewhoarecontinuingto developourcommunityforthefuture.
Nowwehavethejoyofcelebrating100yearsof ministry.Ithasn’talwaysbeenpretty,butIguessthat’s thegrittyDrexel-Phillyway.Godhasworkedthrough eachoneofthese100yearsinamanneronlyHecould haveorchestrated.AndHeistheonlyonewhocould createthesecrazyDrexelstudentsthatIlove.Itwould beanhonortocelebratethisgreatlandmarkwithyou all.IhopetoseeyouallinMay!
