DRAWING THE PORTRAIT: A CROSS-DISCIPLINARY APPROACH KATE BORCHERDING

CONCEPT

Using the landscape as inspiration, this workshop will enrich and expand your understanding of color. Explore the science and psychology behind it, your perception in regards to nature, as well as color theory and interaction.

This workshop embraces a crossdisciplinary approach to drawing the portrait. Using classical methods, you will alternate between drawing and sculpting from life. This approach to visualizing, understanding, and representing the human head will accelerate your learning and confidence.

EXPERIENCE Working with the medium of your choice, you will reference photos to create individual and rich landscape compositions that explore color interaction and perception. Painting techniques such as layering, glazing, optical color mixing, and broken brushstrokes will be demonstrated and discussed. Individual and group instruction, slide lectures on historical and modern approaches to color in the landscape, and critiques will augment this engaging workshop.

INSTRUCTOR Nina Weiss is a nationally recognized artist who has been painting and drawing the landscape for over 25 years. She teaches at Columbia College, Evanston Art Center, North Shore Art League, and her summer European landscape painting and drawing workshop series. Her work is held in private and corporate collections throughout the United States.

EXPERIENCE A portion of each day will be spent working from a live model to create finished drawings in graphite and charcoal. In addition, you will spend time working on a 3D clay head study; focusing on proportion, generalizing shapes, and identifying plane changes. These sculptural exercises will help you to better draw anatomically correct and proportional features. Leave this workshop with a set of new skills to analyze your future work.

INSTRUCTOR Kate Borcherding is a mixed media artist. She received her MFA in Printmaking from IU-Bloomington and her BS in Art from UW-Madison. Since then, she has been the recipient of countless awards and honors, participated in numerous exhibitions, and completed an Arts/Industry residency at John Michael Kohler Arts Center. Kate is a Professor of Printmaking and Drawing at Sam Houston University.

ARTISTIC EXPRESSION: A BOLD APPROACH TO WATERCOLOR DAN DANIELSON

Workshop ID: 2D1834 Date: Aug 13-16 • 9am-4pm Media: Watercolor Skill Level: II-III Member: $450 • Non-Member: $490 CONCEPT Driven by risk-taking and watercolor fundamentals, this workshop focuses on translating your unique observations and interpretations of subject matter to paper. By setting a secure foundation in value, color, composition, and technique, you will be encouraged to explore a more loose and dynamic approach to the medium.

EXPERIENCE Dan will demonstrate traditional techniques passed down from the masters, as well as how to take advantage of the unique and spontaneous properties of watercolor. There will be time each day to work independently as you establish your own personality as a painter. Dan will be available for individual guidance and support, in addition to leading a group critique in a friendly environment.

INSTRUCTOR Dan Danielson’s fascination with watercolor began at The American Academy of Art, where he studied under Irving Shapiro, a well-renowned watercolorist. Upon retiring from his career as a Creative Director, Dan began painting and teaching full-time. His work explores the unique qualities of watercolor through colorist and regionalist works; capturing the medium’s translucent elegance and strength. Dan is a Signature Member of The Illinois Watercolor Society and exhibits his work throughout the region.
