Report finds no impact from survival program BY PAUL GOTTLIEB PENINSULA DAILY NEWS
FORKS — Stories have circulated for decades about residents stumbling across Air Force crews engaged in survival training in rugged forests of the West End. The schooling — part of the Survival, Escape, Resistance and Evasion (SERE) training program coordinated out of the Fairchild Air Force Base — was the subject of a draft environmental assessment released in February. Fleck reviewed the report. “We flipped through it and said, ‘Oh, now we know what the stories are about,’ ” Fleck said in a recent interview. Forks city officials did not comment to the Air Force on the study. “It’s kind of an essential thing we need for our airmen going into war zones overseas,” Fleck said. The assessment determined that training in areas of Clallam and Jefferson counties resulted in no significant environmental impact and recommended it continue. TURN TO TRAINING/A5
The order, signed by Judge Keith Harper, said Miller could not assist in his own defense as a result of mental illness.
Lockdown facility Harper ordered Miller to be transported to Cascade Behavioral Hospital in Tukwila, a lockdown facility. Miller’s trial, once scheduled for May 16-17, has been put on hold. His next court hearing is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. May 20. TURN

TV logger Rygaard to run for Clallam seat PA native famed for ‘Ax Men’ role BY PAUL GOTTLIEB PENINSULA DAILY NEWS
PORT ANGELES — A North Olympic Peninsula reality TV star has set his sights on politics. Port Angeles native Gabe Rygaard, whose family-owned Rygaard Logging Inc. is featured on History Channel’s “Ax Men,” has announced he will run in the Nov. 8 election for Clallam County commissioner. He said Friday he will run as a Republican for the Clallam County District 2 commissioner position being vacated by Mike Chapman, who plans to run for a 24th Legislative District seat as a Democrat.
And Rygaard may be getting out of show business. Rygaard, 44, said the show might be on the chopping block after the recent conclusion of Season 9. As of Friday, he was waiting to hear the fate of Season 10. “At this point, I don’t know if we’re doing it or not,” Rygaard said, conceding even his interest in the show has waned. “I don’t watch it a whole lot any more. I’m so busy working,” he said. A representative of History Channel could not be reached for comment Friday. Rygaard said the show peaked

at its outset in 2008. “I’m expecting the show to kind of wind down,” he said. He said that in the beginning, it took about 17 weeks to film a season of episodes. Now, a season is shot in about six weeks. “They’ve got it down to a science,” Rygaard said. Rygaard, who would not comment on how much he earns for being on “Ax Men,” said his contract has been extended every year under terms based on TV ratings. The show also features his father, Craig, and brother, Jason. “Ax Men” follows logging crews who work in different areas of the country, from Washington to Florida.

According to www.premieredate.tv, “Ax Men” draws 1.56 million viewers weekly, but the ratings “are somewhat surprising in view of the criticism by viewers and critics also.” Critics cite the predictability of the show and accidents and other scenes that are obviously staged, according to the website. “What is it that viewers find attractive about Ax Men? Well, there’s the eternal love for the wilderness, the pioneer spirit, the man-against-nature standoff, the smell of imminent danger,” according to the website.
