Court orders pit bull given to Seattle group BY JOE SMILLIE PENINSULA DAILY NEWS
PORT ANGELES –– A pit bull named Leroy was turned over to the Seattle-based Animal Aid and Rescue Foundation after a judge ruled against Steve Markwell, operator of the controversial Olympic Animal Sanctuary in Forks, on a contract issue. The transfer was made Friday night, only hours before Markwell told the Peninsula Daily News on Saturday that he had loaded the rest of the dogs in shelter into a semi trailer and was driving to a location he would not specify. Mysterious ailment affects sea stars on the Peninsula coast
‘Like a horror show’

Retiring Clallam County Superior Court Judge S. Brooke Taylor says he’ll remain rooted on the North Olympic Peninsula.
Taylor looks back at his job as judge

Something mysterious is eating its way through sea stars along the coast of Olympic National Park. It so far has proved invisible to scientists and researchers who are studying the cause. The effects of the affliction are all too clear. Pale white lesions first appear on the bodies and arms of the normally brightly colored sea stars, marring the royal purple or brick red skin of the creatures. Then it gets worse. “Many of the sea stars were actually shedding limbs,” said Steve Fradkin, a coastal ecologist with the park. “The arms on them were falling off,” he said. “It really looked like kind of like a horror show.”

Since then, researchers have documented confirmed cases of the disease in sea star communities as far north as Alaska and as far south as islands off the coast of San Diego, according to a map produced by a multi-agency group studying the disease. Reports have come in from the San
Juan Islands and Puget Sound. Fradkin said scattered reports have also come in from the East Coast, though few have been confirmed. The affliction has found its way into Port Angeles’ Feiro Marine Life Center. TURN

PORT ANGELES — Clallam County Superior Court Judge S. Brooke Taylor described his job as both “relentless” and the “ultimate honor.” Last week, he told an assembly of friends and colleagues that his impending retirement will be “relentless fun.” Taylor, 70, will lay down his gavel Dec. 31. He will be remembered in part for becoming the first judge to fill a newly created third seat on the Superior Court bench in 2008. A lifelong Port Angeles resident and the son of a prominent attorney and judge, Taylor plans to remain rooted on the North Olympic Peninsula and travel after he retires. “People ask me all the time: ‘What are you going to miss?’” Taylor said in a ceremony at the county commissioners’ meeting Tuesday. “I’m going to miss some of the work. Not all of it. Not the 2 a.m. Saturday-morning search warrants — some [State Patrol] trooper is out on the highway with a DUI arrest and needs to take a blood sample. That I won’t miss at all. TURN
